Closes #81
Closes #86

What

  • A connection waiting for a lock now stops once its context ends. dbkit installs its own SQLite busy handler on each connection, and each call hands it the context's Done channel.
  • The driver has no public way to set a busy handler yet, so dbkit reads the driver connection's private SQLite handle. If a driver release moves it, every Connect fails with a named error, and a test fails once the driver offers a busy handler of its own.
  • Connect tries a busy open again every BusyPoll until BusyTimeout or the end of its context, so a new file that another process is switching to WAL no longer fails at once.
  • New required option BusyPoll. This is a breaking change.

Why

A write behind another writer waited out the whole busy timeout even after its context ended. The first open of a new file failed busy while another process switched it to WAL.

Testing Instructions

Run the testing toolchain in dbkit/sqlite.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Breaking Changes

    • SQLite configuration now requires BusyPoll, the lock-retry interval. Set it to at least 1 ms and no greater than BusyTimeout.
    • sql.Conn.Raw now exposes a dbkit wrapper rather than the underlying driver connection.
  • Improvements

    • SQLite lock waits and connection-opening retries now stop when the operation’s context is canceled or reaches its deadline.
    • SQLite’s PRAGMA busy_timeout now reads as 0; setting it restores waits that do not follow the operation’s context.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Transaction-start errors now match the operation’s context, and migrations can retry when another process switches a new database file to WAL.

📝 Walkthrough

SQLite connections now use a required BusyPoll interval for lock retries. Busy waits respond to call contexts, and connection opens retry classified busy errors within the configured timeout. The changes also adjust missing-path symlink checks and update related tests and changelog entries.

Changes: SQLite busy handling and connection retries

Options adds required BusyPoll validation. Connections install a context-aware busy handler and wrap driver operations. Tests cover context cancellation, retry timing, connection reuse, and PRAGMA busy_timeout values.
Retry busy connection opens
dbkit/sqlite/connector.go, dbkit/sqlite/connector_internal_test.go
Connector opens retry classified busy errors at BusyPoll intervals until BusyTimeout or context termination. Serialized open attempts clean up successful results that arrive after cancellation.
Validate pool and process-level open behavior
dbkit/sqlite/connector_test.go, dbkit/sqlite/connector_unix_test.go, dbkit/sqlite/CHANGELOG.md
Tests cover opening new files under write locks, concurrent pool opens, and migrations across processes. Changelog entries describe the busy-open retry and context-aware wait changes.

SQLite path validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Check missing paths for symbolic links
dbkit/sqlite/open.go
A missing path is reported as a broken symbolic link only when Lstat succeeds and identifies a symlink.

Explanation

The changes meet the coding requirements for active issues #81 and #86. For #81, dbkit installs a per-connection busy handler, passes each call's context Done channel, and maps cancelled waits and operations to context errors. The added tests cover deadlines, cancellation, writes, transactions, queries, rows, and cleanup. For #86, Connect retries busy opens at BusyPoll intervals until BusyTimeout or context cancellation. Options.BusyPoll is required and validated from 1 ms through BusyTimeout. Tests cover WAL opening, timeout, cancellation, concurrent handles, and separate-process Migrate calls.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within the scope of issues #81 and #86. The busy-handler wrapper, direct libc dependency, connector retry logic, BusyPoll option, open-path changes, changelog updates, and related tests support context-aware SQLite waits or busy-open retries. The shared test updates verify the changed busy-handler behavior. No unrelated feature or unrelated behavior change is demonstrated.

[Medium impact] The changes affect SQLite connection waits and opens for dbkit users.

Not safe to merge until prepared-statement execution is isolated from an unrelated query's cancellation.

Fix All in Claude CodeFindings

  1. P1 Queries cancel unrelated statements ▶
Fix with agent prompt
### Issue 1
dbkit/sqlite/busy.go:199
`QueryContext` now leaves its context in the connection-wide `span` until its rows close. On a pinned `sql.Conn`, prepare a statement before opening query rows, then execute that statement with a different context while another connection holds the write lock. Prepared-statement execution does not install its own span, so canceling the open query makes the statement stop waiting and fail with `SQLITE_BUSY` even though its own context is still live.

This caused the write to fail in all three reproduced cases; the identical writes on the previous revision waited for the lock to clear and succeeded. Set the context around each actual driver operation, including prepared-statement execution, so one query cannot cancel an unrelated write.

---

For each issue above, determine whether it is valid and should be fixed. If so, fix it directly.

Summary

This PR makes SQLite lock waits follow the caller's context and retries busy connection opens.

  • SQLite lock waits now stop when a call's context ends.
  • SQLite connection opens retry busy locks until their timeout or context ends.
  • Path checking keeps its broken-link test in a small helper.

Restore the newest live span after each call.

A later ExecContext or query on the same Tx or pinned sql.Conn can run between two Rows.Next calls. It replaces span R, then clears the span when it returns. The next busy Rows.Next uses the nil-context fallback and can wait until BusyTimeout.

Keep all open spans and restore the newest span that remains open. Do not restore a closed predecessor.

P1 Queries cancel unrelated statements

QueryContext now leaves its context in the connection-wide span until its rows close. On a pinned sql.Conn, prepare a statement before opening query rows, then execute that statement with a different context while another connection holds the write lock. Prepared-statement execution does not install its own span, so canceling the open query makes the statement stop waiting and fail with SQLITE_BUSY even though its own context is still live.

This caused the write to fail in all three reproduced cases; the identical writes on the previous revision waited for the lock to clear and succeeded. Set the context around each actual driver operation, including prepared-statement execution, so one query cannot cancel an unrelated write.

Comment:
**Queries cancel unrelated statements**
