perf(engine): a large model whose bounds vary over several dimensions builds up to a tenth faster - #2068
A parameter joined over two or more dims whose ordinals sit in the column itself is joined on its row-major position, one Int64, rather than on its columns. On main with #2065, sector builds in 0.91× the time at its largest size, nodal in 0.93×, network in 0.96×; the ports do not change.
What changed
Scope.parameter_join serves every bound that does not attach by position and every where that reads a parameter. Where _keyed_by_position holds, it computes row_major(dims, ordinal_of) on both sides, joins on that one column and drops it. The position is the rule labels are already numbered by, so it is unique per coordinate.
The key's column is __row-major position__. A review found that its first name, __position__, is one a file may give a dimension: the join replaced that dimension's column and then dropped it (ColumnNotFoundError). test_a_dimension_named_like_the_join_key_keeps_its_column reproduced it as a strict xfail (490e04a) before the rename (a47c7c2); a name with a space, as the other temporary columns have, cannot be declared.
_keyed_by_position asks for two or more dims, each an Enum or a run of consecutive integers, whose ordinal ordinal_of reads off the column. A dim with gaps in its integers would need ordinal_of's lookup, which costs more than the join saves, so it keeps the join on columns, as does a parameter over one dim.
On network/l the slowest query of the build was the bound p_max joined onto p's labels on (snapshot, bus, tech); it is masked to installed pairs, so #511's positional attach does not apply. In isolation, on 3.4M rows of that shape, the single key took 67 ms against 135 ms for the three columns.
This is not #1933's change: that one moved a dense bound in build order off a scatter, and changed no whole build. This one changes the join itself and reaches every sparse or masked bound and every parameter where.
This branch also carries #2075 (Xpress 10), ported until it merges.
test_a_joined_bound_keyed_by_position_writes_the_same_model, two cases: t as consecutive integers is keyed, t with gaps (0, 5, 10) is not, and the where on cost over n alone is not. Each case writes the LP file and checks that it is byte-identical to the file written with _keyed_by_position forced to False.

Not done. The joins inside the compiler's products go through join_on, which has no scope to read ordinals from, so they still join on columns. ordinal_of's cast of a consecutive run to Int64, which this PR uses and _dense_row and the sets already did, raises on UInt64 labels above 2^63 − 1; that is for a change to ordinal_of.

…ng comparison on a string label is refused at load
mathspec 0.4.0 refuses `<`, `<=`, `>` or `>=` on a str or bool value
(energy-models/mathspec#931), which landed after the `main` commit the
migration was written against. The two tests that ordered string labels
bytewise now fail at load, so they go; mathspec's validation tests hold
the refusal. The String cast in `_dimension_column` stays, since `==`
against an unknown label still matches nothing.

It looks like this branch is under active development. To avoid overwhelming you with review comments due to an influx of new commits, CodeRabbit has automatically paused this review. You can configure this behavior by changing the reviews.auto_review.auto_pause_after_reviewed_commits setting.
The change adds row-major positional keys for eligible multidimensional parameter joins and retains dimension-column joins for other cases. Tests cover both join paths. The changelog reports a build-time performance improvement. The Xpress version requirement, maximize objective setting, Pixi macOS requirement, and pytest warning filter are also updated.

Summary
Join selection and validation src/specsolve/_engine/scope.py, tests/test_relational.py, CHANGELOG.md
For joins with multiple dimensions, Scope.parameter_join uses a temporary row-major position key when each dimension is enum-encoded or consecutive. Other joins retain dimension-column keys. Tests cover consecutive and gapped labels, one-dimensional joins, LP output, and a dimension named __position__. The changelog reports that large models with bounds varying across dimensions build up to a tenth faster.

Before / after behavior
observed — Modified behavior in CHANGELOG.md: Adds an Upcoming version entry reporting that large models with bounds varying over several dimensions build up to a tenth faster, with a link to PR #2068.
observed — Modified behavior in src/specsolve/_sinks/xpress.py: For maximize objectives, _built now uses xpress.ObjSense.MAXIMIZE instead of xpress.maximize when setting the objective sense.
observed — Modified behavior in src/specsolve/_engine/scope.py: Adds _POSITION, the reserved column name used to carry a row-major join key.
observed — Modified behavior in src/specsolve/_engine/scope.py: parameter_join now uses row-major positions as a temporary join key when there are multiple dimensions and each is enum-encoded or consecutive; it drops the key after joining. Other cases retain the dimension-keyed join. Adds _keyed_by_position to test that condition.

1ad4d24 ports #2075 here until it merges: CI now resolves Xpress 10.0.0 (released 2026-10-29), which fails 40 Xpress tests on main and on this PR alike (use xpress.ObjSense.MAXIMIZE instead, and a Community-licence warning). The three files it touches (_sinks/xpress.py, pyproject.toml, uv.lock) are #2075's, and the change drops out of this diff once main carries it. The Xpress tests pass on Xpress 10.0.0 at that commit.

Guard the positional join against an unrepresentable key.
_keyed_by_position enables the Int64 row-major join without checking the dimension product. A multidimensional parameter with valid consecutive or Enum labels can remain sparse, so attachment does not reject a product greater than 2**63. In that case, row_major cannot represent the final position in Int64; the join can fail during collection or use a colliding key. Fall back to the existing column join when the product is larger than the number of representable Int64 positions.

Use a collision-safe temporary join key.
If a model declares __row-major position__ and an eligible multidimensional parameter is used in a variable where, Scope.parameter_join overwrites that dimension and then drops it. labels.frame later selects the declared dimensions, so the build can fail with a missing-column error.
