Prompt: Update specsolve to the latest mathspec

Note

The following content was generated by AI.

specsolve builds against mathspec 0.4.0 as released on PyPI. This PR supersedes #2062: it is #2062's two commits plus one commit for the release. Every gate below passes, and every PyPSA rung matches.

What this PR adds on top of #2062

#2062 was written against mathspec main at 0f892c0, before the release. Its description lists the migration: renamed program classes, conditions:, dims= on hand-built nodes, the regenerated PyPSA corpus, and the pins. This PR adds:

Verification

On 2acf6fa, with mathspec 0.4.0 from PyPI:

  • pixi run check (lint, format-check, typecheck, test): 5766 passed, 574 skipped, 4 xfailed.
  • pixi run -e floors pytest -q -n auto: 3853 passed, 392 skipped, 2 xfailed.
  • pixi run -e docs docs-build: strict build, no issues. docs-test: 116 passed.
  • differential/pypsa/parity.py against mathspec v0.4.0, run as pypsa-parity.yml runs it: every rung matches, exit 0, and differential/pypsa has no diff after the run.

Not run: test-via-pyarrow, test-bench.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Breaking Changes

    • Requires mathspec 0.4.0. Reusable selectors now use conditions: instead of masks:; ordering comparisons on text labels are rejected during loading.
    • The modular branches and storage example no longer includes generator, link, or process investment costs and capacity decisions.
  • Bug Fixes

    • PyPSA capacity decisions now account for an asset’s active status independently of activity during modeled snapshots, improving model comparisons.
  • Documentation

    • Updated examples with clearer notation and consistent model dimensions.

…le condition under `conditions:` rather than `masks:`

Port to mathspec main (0f892c0): the program classes take their
construct's name (#855), mathspec's private modules start with an
underscore (#878), a condition is a condition rather than a predicate
(#904, #907), and every expression node states its dims (#899).

The PyPSA rungs, tables, ladder, gallery and construct pages and the
walkthrough golden file are regenerated against mathspec main's corpus.
prep supplies each component's `*_active_asset` flag, which #886 adds.

…ng comparison on a string label is refused at load

mathspec 0.4.0 refuses `<`, `<=`, `>` or `>=` on a str or bool value
(energy-models/mathspec#931), which landed after the `main` commit the
migration was written against. The two tests that ordered string labels
bytewise now fail at load, so they go; mathspec's validation tests hold
the refusal. The String cast in `_dimension_column` stays, since `==`
against an unknown label still matches nothing.

📝 Walkthrough

This pull request updates specsolve and its PyPSA corpus for mathspec 0.4. It adds asset-level activity flags to capacity and modularity rules, replaces named masks with conditions, updates model examples and notation, and records matching parity results for Rung 63.

Changes: Mathspec 0.4 integration

Layer / File(s) Summary
Program-node and condition handling
src/specsolve/*, tests/*, tools/constructs.py, pyproject.toml, CHANGELOG.md
Specsolve and its tests use mathspec 0.4 node types and condition terminology. Expression tests now provide explicit dimensions. The dependency range and floors pin change to 0.4.0.
PyPSA capacity eligibility
differential/pypsa/prep.py, differential/pypsa/projection.py, differential/pypsa/rungs/*, differential/pypsa/references.json
The corpus emits asset-level active flags and uses them to select extendable capacity variables and related constraints. Named mask declarations move to conditions. The Rung 63 comparison records matching model sizes.
PyPSA ladder examples
docs/examples/pypsa_ladder/*
The examples document asset-level capacity rules, condition declarations, and revised expression dimensions. Rung 63’s documented comparison and investment terms are updated.
Other examples and notation
docs/examples/*
Several examples replace notation prose with tables and reorder selected dimensions or quantifiers. The transport example uses bus-first indexing for selected expressions.

Priority: ➖ Normal

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~60 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 792d4

The model migration appears mergeable with documentation follow-up: clarify the transport dimensions and hour notation, and distinguish the repeated condition sections.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 792d4

This is a breaking dependency and input-format migration. The reviewed execution paths preserve validation and build-failure isolation, with no introduced security regression identified. Compatibility with the external dependency and unreviewed surfaces remains partially verified.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected exposure is caller-supplied specifications and data influencing model frames and the existing solver handoff within the executing process. These paths do not establish a new service or tenant authority boundary. Deployment-specific privileges, tenant isolation, and downstream uses of solver results remain outside the demonstrated scope.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Before solver handoff, the inspected assembly paths retain bound-null rejection and constraint and objective validation. The full comparison changes assembly annotations rather than these enforcement statements, while compiler reference renames retain the existing lowering paths.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Build-state publication and failure containment are unchanged. Assembly constructs its handoff before returning the built model, and the engine publishes that model only after assembly succeeds. The public fill path closes the engine on failure, including interruption, rather than leaving a stale usable build. Direct reuse or concurrent use of one mutable Assembly gains no new guard in this PR; that limitation predates the annotation changes.

$`t \ominus k`$ denotes cyclic translation: index $`t-k`$ taken modulo the size of the dimension (`roll`). Plain $`t-k`$ (`shift`) has no wraparound — terms translated past the edge are simply absent.

Use the hour index in the translation notation.

This file declares h as hour and t as step, but the equations apply the operator to h. Define h \ominus k, or explicitly state that t is a generic hour label.

Review comment at @docs/examples/genx_piecewise_fuel.md at line 86:
Update the translation notation in the piecewise fuel documentation to use the
declared hour index h, defining h \ominus k consistently with the equations;
alternatively, explicitly state that t is being used as a generic hour label.

🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Keep the expression dimensions consistent with the executable model.

gen_at_bus and net_inflow are documented as bus × snapshot, but the YAML constraint remains [snapshot, bus]. The reference builder also produces snapshot × bus after summing the generator or line dimension. Restore snapshot × bus and (s,b) in these definitions, or update every executable contract to the new order.

Also applies to: 76-76, 82-82, 96-96
