Fixes CORE-1557 (part of CORE-1502).

test (spark) takes 45–75 minutes, and its last 4 runs failed. Nearly all of the time is in "Start Spark": the Dockerfile downloads the ~300MB Spark tarball from archive.apache.org, which is heavily throttled, on every run. In job 112239474193 that one RUN layer took 3305s. Once a run passes the 1h mark, the AWS OIDC credentials expire and send-report fails:

botocore.exceptions.ClientError: An error occurred (ExpiredToken) when calling the CreateMultipartUpload operation: The provided token has expired.

Changes

  • Build on the official apache/spark image and ADD only the Delta and Postgres JDBC jars from Maven Central. The Spark image and Delta artifact are build args, so moving to another version is a compose change.
  • Run Spark 3.3.3 + Delta 2.2.0, the same 3.3 line as before. Which versions to run going forward is CORE-1561.
  • Health-check Spark with a beeline select 1 instead of an open port.
  • Remove entrypoint.sh: its metastore wait duplicated depends_on: condition: service_healthy, and spark-submit is now the ENTRYPOINT.
  • Print the warehouse containers' logs when a start step fails. Before, compose only reported container spark-thrift exited (1).

Why 3.3.3 and not apache/spark:v3.3.2: the v3.3.2 image ships JDK 11.0.16, which crashes on the GitHub runners with JDK-8287073 (affects 11.0.16, fixed in 11.0.17). The 3.3.3 image ships JDK 11.0.20.

  • A probe on the runner (image 20260927.320.1, Docker 28.0.4, kernel 6.17) showed:
    • plain java -XshowSettings:system -version in apache/spark:v3.3.2 throws NullPointerException, with no Spark involved
    • the Spark 3.3.2 thrift server crashes on startup with InstanceNotFoundException: java.nio:type=BufferPool, name=direct
    • both work with -XX:-UseContainerSupport, or with the same Spark 3.3.2 on a current Java 11
  • The same NPE (CgroupV2Subsystem.getInstance, "anyController" is null) broke Elasticsearch, Kafka and Zookeeper on the Ubuntu 24.04 runners in actions/runner-images#13684. GitHub rolled that image back, and the Docker upgrade is still on hold in #14105.
  • It doesn't reproduce on Docker Desktop. The runner exposes the misc and dmem cgroup controllers, which Docker Desktop's VM doesn't.

CI (run 37544800825):

Job Start Spark Job total
spark before (job 112239474193) 3334s 72 min, failed on ExpiredToken
spark (3.3.3) 42s 20 min, passed

Tested locally with dbt-core 1.12.5, dbt-spark 1.11.0 (PyHive 0.7.0) and dbt-data-reliability master: on Spark 3.3.3, dbt run fails only on error_model, as the workflow expects, and dbt test gives PASS=27 WARN=1 ERROR=65, the same as CI on the old image. Those dbt test errors aren't new: Spark has had the same counts since at least Aug 18, and the step is continue-on-error.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Tests
    • End-to-end checks now run a query to confirm the Spark service is ready and check that the Hive Metastore is available before proceeding.
    • Failed test runs now include warehouse service logs to help diagnose issues.
    • The test environment now uses Spark 3.3.3 with Delta Core 2.2.0, along with updated Spark configuration and service startup settings.

The Spark e2e Dockerfile downloaded the ~300MB Spark tarball from
archive.apache.org on every run, which took 40-70 minutes. Past the
1h mark the AWS OIDC credentials expire, so send-report failed with
ExpiredToken.

Build on the official apache/spark image and fetch only the Delta and
Postgres JDBC jars from Maven Central. The spark target stays on Spark
3.3.2 + Delta 2.2.0: Spark 3.5's thrift server breaks Elementary's
DDL via PyHive (CORE-1558).

Add a spark4 target (Spark 4.2 + Delta 4.4), which also covers Spark
4's ANSI mode default.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The warehouse test matrix and workflow now include Spark 4. Docker Compose defines a Spark 4 Thrift service, and the test profile uses the Spark connection settings for the spark4 target.

The Spark tests still wait for a healthy metastore and a successful Thrift query before proceeding. No actionable merge-blocking issue was found in the reviewed changes.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 32bc7

The changes remain within the warehouse-test environment. CI starts one Spark version per isolated runner, and existing container privileges and credential permissions are not broadened by the configuration changes. Remaining uncertainty concerns the resolved third-party images and dependencies, external credential policies, and recovery when switching versions on a persistent local Docker host.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • observed — The additional Spark4 job inherits the existing warehouse-test secret inputs and AWS OIDC role selection. Its report step targets the existing Slack channel and elementary-ci-artifacts S3 bucket. Container configuration directly grants access to shared test storage and mounted files, not an explicit AWS credential mount; the role's maximum permitted scope is not established by these files.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The existing workflow intentionally executes PR-selected code with test credentials. Fork execution is gated through the elementary_test_env environment job, secrets are explicitly listed, and checkout does not persist Git credentials. This PR adds a matrix target without changing those controls. Actual environment approval rules and AWS trust policy remain outside the inspected source.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — The strongest containment for interrupted or concurrent CI runs is separate hosted-runner state, not the concurrency key, which distinguishes Spark from Spark4. A persistent-host version-switch failure remains a test-state ownership limitation rather than evidence of a new tenant, production, or credential boundary breach.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Pinning image digests and verifying downloaded-jar checksums could make the expanded runtime dependency chain reproducible and reduce reliance on mutable upstream distribution points. This is optional hardening, not an observed compromise.

Report an unmatched Jackson jar before downloading.

When the Spark image has no single matching jackson-databind jar, the script can construct an invalid Maven path. The later wget already fails the Docker build under set -e; this check improves the diagnostic rather than preventing a build failure.

entrypoint.sh waited for the host:port pairs in WAIT_FOR (the Hive
metastore's Postgres) to accept connections, then ran spark-submit.
The wait is redundant: docker-compose already starts spark-thrift and
spark4-thrift only after spark-hive-metastore reports healthy
(depends_on with condition: service_healthy, backed by pg_isready),
so the loop always succeeded on its first try.

Without the loop the script was only `exec spark-submit "$@"`, which
ENTRYPOINT ["spark-submit"] does directly: the exec form passes the
container arguments through and runs spark-submit as PID 1. Also drop
the WAIT_FOR variable, which nothing reads now.

- Download the Delta and Postgres JDBC jars with ADD <url> instead of a
separate Alpine stage with a shell script. The Dockerfile is a single
stage again, and the Delta artifact name (delta-core_2.12 or
delta-spark_2.13, renamed in Delta 3.0) is a build arg instead of being
  derived from the version.
- Drop the Delta Kernel and jackson-datatype-jdk8 jars from the Spark 4
image. Plain Delta tables on a Hive metastore never load Kernel: the
Spark 4 e2e gives the same results without them (dbt test PASS=32
WARN=1 ERROR=60, no class loading errors).
- Use symbolic --chmod (a+r) for readability. Files ADDed from a URL
are 600, so the jars need it.
- Health-check Spark with a beeline `select 1` instead of an open port,
so the service is only healthy once the thrift server answers
queries. beeline ships with the official images, takes 0-2s and exits
non-zero when the server is unreachable.
- Replace the Spark-only container log dump with one step that prints
the logs of all warehouse containers when a start step fails.
- Put the spark|spark4 adapter case on one line like the other entries.

CodeRabbit's nitpick (validate the detected jackson-databind version before downloading) no longer applies: 9aaa2c8 removes the jackson-datatype-jdk8 download along with the version lookup.

typos read "ADDed" as a misspelling of "added" and rewrote it.

tests/e2e_dbt_project/docker/spark/Dockerfile:18-22
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Add the Delta Kernel runtime dependencies conditionally.

The Spark seeder executes CREATE TABLE ... USING delta, and the Spark configuration enables DeltaCatalog. The Delta Spark 4.4.1 jar directly references Kernel classes in its DDL and read paths. Its POM declares the three Kernel artifacts as runtime dependencies, but this Dockerfile downloads only delta-spark and delta-storage.

Seed loading can therefore fail with missing Kernel classes and raise RuntimeError. The proposed conditional RUN must also install curl, because apache/spark:4.2.0 does not include it.

On CodeRabbit's Major note (add the Delta Kernel jars for Delta 4): Delta 4.4.1 works without them here.

  • CI on 7d20c90, which has no Kernel jars: the spark4 job passed end to end. That includes "Seed e2e dbt project (external)", which runs the CREATE TABLE ... USING delta statements the note mentions, and "Run e2e dbt project".
  • Locally, after seeding and dbt run on Spark 4.2 (PASS=50, ERROR=1 on the intentional error_model), the Spark server log has no io.delta.kernel, NoClassDefFoundError or ClassNotFoundException entries.

So for this setup (Delta tables on a Hive metastore), Kernel isn't loaded, and the jars stay out.

It was there for symbolic `--chmod` (a+r), which needs Dockerfile syntax
1.14. The GitHub Ubuntu 24.04 runners have Docker 28.0.4, which ships
BuildKit 0.20 with the 1.14 frontend built in, so the directive is not
needed. Verified by building without it on BuildKit v0.20.0.

pg_isready over the socket can pass during that window. The removed
