official dbt-bigquery incremental materialization cluster_by existing table behavior source

💡 Result:

**Official source:** the archived `dbt-bigquery` incremental materialization macro. On a normal incremental run with an existing table, it reads `cluster_by` but does not compare or update the existing table’s clustering configuration; it proceeds to generate and execute the incremental build SQL. ([github.com](https://github.com/dbt-labs/dbt-bigquery/blob/main/dbt/include/bigquery/macros/materializations/incremental.sql?utm_source=openai))

The macro checks whether the existing table is replaceable based on partitioning and clustering only in **full-refresh** mode. If it isn’t replaceable, dbt drops and recreates it. So changing `cluster_by` alone on a regular incremental run does not trigger a rebuild; use `--full-refresh` to apply the new clustering configuration. ([github.com](https://github.com/dbt-labs/dbt-bigquery/blob/main/dbt/include/bigquery/macros/materializations/incremental.sql?utm_source=openai))

**Version caveat:** this is the repository’s `main`-branch source as indexed, not a source pinned to a specific installed `dbt-bigquery` version. The repository is archived, so check your installed version’s implementation if you need version-specific confirmation. ([github.com](https://github.com/dbt-labs/dbt-bigquery/blob/main/dbt/include/bigquery/macros/materializations/incremental.sql?utm_source=openai))

🌐 Web query:

official dbt-bigquery v1.0 v1.5 v1.8 incremental.sql cluster_by full_refresh existing relation

💡 Result:

Across **dbt-bigquery v1.0.0, v1.5.0, and v1.8.0**, the incremental materialization follows the same relevant `cluster_by` / `--full-refresh` logic:

| Case | What `incremental.sql` does |
|---|---|
| Existing table, normal incremental run | Reads `cluster_by`, but does not use it in this branch; proceeds with the incremental build against the existing relation. |
| Existing table, `--full-refresh` | Calls `adapter.is_replaceable(existing_relation, partition_by, cluster_by)`. If false, drops the existing relation; then creates the table from the model SQL. |

The full-refresh branch does **not** unconditionally drop the existing table: whether it is dropped depends on the adapter’s `is_replaceable` result. The file alone does not establish exactly when a given table is replaceable; that depends on the adapter implementation. The same branch is present in all three versioned files. Add an upgrade path for existing BigQuery tables.

For an existing unclustered dbt_run_results table, an ordinary incremental run does not apply the new cluster_by setting. The dbt-bigquery materialization only uses the clustering configuration when it creates or rebuilds the table. The PR adds no migration, reclustering operation, or operator documentation. Add an in-place reclustering path, or document a supported full-refresh procedure for existing installations.

Review comment at @models/edr/dbt_artifacts/dbt_run_results.sql at line 15:
Provide an upgrade path for existing unclustered dbt_run_results tables: either
add an in-place reclustering operation that applies the cluster_by configuration
from dbt_run_results, or document the supported full-refresh procedure for
existing installations. Keep the change scoped to upgrading these existing
tables.
