Since #1006, get_elementary_relation builds a relation from the graph node coordinates when the physical relation is missing and --defer/--favor-state is active, so deferred anomaly tests do not render "from None". The same fallback also fired for the on-run-end artifact uploads during dbt run --defer --favor-state, where the Elementary schema of the current target is never created, turning the previous graceful skip into a "schema does not exist" failure.

Make the fallback opt-in through an allow_deferred_fallback parameter. Only the callers that render the relation into test SQL pass it; the artifact upload callers keep getting none when the relation does not exist and skip the upload as before.

Fixes #1036

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Data monitoring, schema-change checks, and related tests can use available deferred dbt relations during runs that use defer or favor-state.
    • Deferred runs with artifact uploads can succeed when the default Elementary schema is missing, including when a schema suffix is configured.
    • When no deferred relation is available, missing relations are handled without attempting to use an unavailable table.

📝 Walkthrough

Selected Elementary relation lookups can now opt in to deferred fallback. The relation resolver keeps fallback disabled by default. A guarded integration test checks a deferred model run with artifact uploads enabled.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in integration_tests/tests/test_dbt_artifacts/test_deferred_run_artifacts_upload.py: Adds imports for filesystem and temporary-directory handling, pytest and dbt test utilities, and constants for the selected model and missing-schema suffix.
  • observed — Modified behavior in integration_tests/tests/test_dbt_artifacts/test_deferred_run_artifacts_upload.py: Adds a guarded integration test that creates state from an initial model run, enables deferred execution and artifact uploads with the missing-schema suffix, and asserts the deferred run succeeds. A finally block restores the original environment, deletes the temporary state directory, and clears the suffixed environment.
  • observed — Modified behavior in macros/edr/data_monitoring/anomaly_detection/get_anomaly_scores_query.sql: The default relation lookup now enables deferred fallback; the previous call used only the relation name.
  • observed — Modified behavior in macros/edr/data_monitoring/monitors_query/get_latest_full_refresh.sql: The default macro now enables deferred fallback when resolving the dbt_run_results relation.

🟠 Major · Do not use deferred fallback for the on-run metrics insert. · handle_tests_results.sql:174

macros/edr/tests/on_run_end/handle_tests_results.sql:174
🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Do not use deferred fallback for the on-run metrics insert.

When the current data_monitoring_metrics relation is missing and --defer or --favor-state is active, this lookup can construct a relation that does not exist. insert_data_monitoring_metrics then executes INSERT INTO that relation and can fail the on-run test-results upload.

Remove the fallback and return when the relation is missing. Removing the argument alone is insufficient because the current branch raises a compiler error.

Suggested fix
     {%- set target_relation = elementary.get_elementary_relation(
-        "data_monitoring_metrics", allow_deferred_fallback=true
+        "data_monitoring_metrics"
     ) -%}
     {% if not target_relation %}
-        {% do elementary.raise_missing_elementary_models() %}
+        {% do elementary.warn_missing_elementary_models() %}
+        {% do return(none) %}
     {% endif %}

The fallback in get_buckets_configuration.sql is a separate test-SQL path and should remain enabled.

Re the outside-diff comment on handle_tests_results.sql:174: the fallback here is intentional and matches master, where get_elementary_relation falls back for every caller since #1006. This writer only reaches the INSERT after anomaly tests have produced metrics, and those tests read data_monitoring_metrics through the same fallback. So if the relation didn't exist, the tests would already have failed and test_metrics_tables would be empty. Switching to warn-and-return would silently drop metrics from deferred runs. I've left it as is.
