Summary

Anomaly tests only score complete time buckets. For data that lands once per bucket, like a monthly upload per country, that means a short upload is only detected after the month has ended, and only on the next dbt run after that.

This adds an opt-in include_current_bucket option to dimension_anomalies:

- elementary.dimension_anomalies:
    dimensions: [country]
    timestamp_column: period_start
    time_bucket: {period: month, count: 1}
    include_current_bucket: true

With it enabled:

  • The bucket that is still in progress is included in the monitored window and scored on every run.
  • Dimension values with no rows in the current bucket are not zero-filled, because they have not arrived yet (this is not a drop). Complete buckets are zero-filled as before.
  • The current bucket is never treated as cached, so it is recalculated on each run until it completes.
  • It requires a timestamp_column (compile error otherwise).
  • Only dimension_anomalies reads it. Setting it in vars or on a model has no effect on other anomaly tests.
  • A partial snapshot of the current bucket is never cached as its final value: a metric only counts as cached if it was calculated after its bucket ended, so the bucket is recalculated once it completes. This check only applies with the option on, so the default path is unchanged.

With it disabled (the default), behaviour is unchanged. No adapter-specific macros are touched: the change passes "end of the current bucket" as the window end in get_metric_buckets_min_and_max, get_anomaly_scores_query and the dimension zero-fill, only when the option is on.

This is intended for data that arrives in one go per bucket (snapshot uploads, deliveries). For streaming data a partial bucket naturally looks like a drop, which is why the default waits for complete buckets.

Rerun alignment fix (split out into #1078)

While testing, I found that monthly dimension anomaly tests on sources or incremental models fail falsely on their second run, on unmodified master, because the backfill start isn't aligned to the time bucket. As suggested in review, the fix is split out into #1078 so it can be released or reverted on its own. This PR's weekly and monthly tests depend on it, so #1078 should merge first. Until then the same change is also in this branch; updating from master afterwards drops it from this diff.

Tests

New integration tests in test_dimension_anomalies.py:

  • test_include_current_bucket_detects_anomaly_in_current_bucket: passes by default, fails with the option.
  • test_include_current_bucket_passes_on_normal_current_bucket
  • test_include_current_bucket_ignores_dimension_not_arrived_yet
  • test_include_current_bucket_ignores_deleted_rows: rows deleted from the current bucket are not scored from the metric an earlier run stored for it.
  • test_include_current_bucket_monthly_snapshot_upload: monthly uploads, a short upload is detected in the month it lands.
  • test_buckets_stay_aligned_on_rerun[week|month]: regression test for the alignment fix, which moves to fix: align the backfill start to the time bucket on reruns #1078 (month skipped on Redshift, which has no monthly buckets).
  • test_include_current_bucket_tests_previous_bucket[week|month]: a dimension that skipped the previous bucket is still detected once that bucket is complete, so testing the current bucket does not push the last complete bucket out of the detection window.
  • test_include_current_bucket_requires_timestamp_column: the compile error without a timestamp_column.
  • test_include_current_bucket_with_multi_hour_buckets[source|model]: 4-hour buckets (count > 1), on the incremental path and on a table model, which recalculates all buckets.
  • test_include_current_bucket_recalculates_partial_bucket: a partial snapshot is recalculated once its bucket has ended, even when the next run is outside backfill_days.

test_anomaly_test_configuration.py sets the new key in vars, model and test config and checks that it is ignored by tests that do not support it.

Ran locally against Postgres and DuckDB: all anomaly-related suites pass (dimension, volume, column, all columns, freshness, event freshness, backfill logic, ranges, exclude metrics, test configuration, collect metrics, nested struct).

The fixes and review changes on top (the last complete bucket stays in the detection window, stale current-bucket metrics are not scored, and the cache rule only applies with the option on) were run against DuckDB only: the dimension, test configuration and backfill logic suites pass, and the regression tests fail without their fixes.

Follow-ups

  • Docs page for the new option. It should mention that a dimension with no rows in the current bucket is not flagged while that bucket is in progress. Once the bucket has ended it is zero-filled and tested like any complete bucket, in the usual detection window (for monthly buckets with the default backfill_days, on every run of the following month).
  • Report and Cloud charts: anchor the shaded detection window on max_bucket_end instead of the newest end_time, and mark the in-progress bucket. Cloud's currentVsExpected also reports an in-progress bucket's partial value (details in the review discussion).

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Dimension anomaly checks can include the in-progress time bucket, allowing partial current-day, weekly, or monthly data to be evaluated. This option requires a timestamp column.
    • Dimensions with no data in the current bucket are not automatically treated as having dropped to zero.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Weekly and monthly buckets remain aligned across reruns, and checks still identify missing dimensions in completed buckets.
    • In-progress buckets are recalculated as data changes, so deleted or outdated rows are not scored using earlier metrics.

Anomaly tests only score complete time buckets, so data that lands once per
bucket (e.g. a monthly upload per country) is only checked after the bucket
has ended. With include_current_bucket: true, the bucket that is still in
progress is scored on every run as well. Dimension values without rows in the
current bucket are not zero-filled, since they have not arrived yet. The
current bucket is never treated as cached, so it is recalculated each run.

Also align the backfill start to its bucket in get_metric_buckets_min_and_max.
For sources and incremental models the backfill start was a plain date, so
buckets that are not a whole number of days (months, weeks) were generated
from a mid-bucket start on reruns, producing empty buckets and false failures.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to a3de5

The option remains limited to dimension anomaly tests within the existing warehouse monitoring workflow. Checks prevent incomplete snapshots from being treated as final cached metrics. No introduced security finding was established, but concurrent-run and interrupted-run recovery guarantees remain incompletely validated.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly expanded data scope is the additional bucket for configured dimension monitoring. The inspected path still reads the configured warehouse asset and writes through existing Elementary relations; it does not establish a new remote entrypoint or broader identity authority. Effective tenant and warehouse permission boundaries remain unverified.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Capability gating and the timestamp prerequisite constrain configuration propagation. The completed-metric cache predicate and exclusion of stored current-bucket snapshots constrain stale-data reuse; they are consistency controls, not authorization checks.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The unchanged lifecycle creates non-temporary, timestamp-suffixed test relations, appends metrics before publishing result rows, and performs configured cleanup later in the normal end-of-run hook. Recovery after process interruption and atomicity across metric and result publication were not established. These are pre-existing mechanisms, not verified PR-introduced failures.
  • observed — The unchanged result consumer selects identity metadata from the last returned score row without explicitly sorting that selection, while counting failures across all anomalous rows. Multiple historical buckets already reached this consumer before the PR; the additional bucket does not by itself establish a worsened security or failure-containment condition.

Comment @coderabbitai help to get the list of available commands.

- Cast the current bucket end back to a timestamp; BigQuery's edr_timeadd
returns a date for week/month buckets.
- Only treat metrics as cached when they were calculated after their bucket
ended, so the last partial snapshot of a bucket is recalculated once it
completes instead of being frozen as its final value.
- Only resolve include_current_bucket for dimension_anomalies, so setting it
in vars or on a model does not affect or break other anomaly tests.
- Skip monthly tests on Redshift (no month buckets) and cover weekly buckets
  in the rerun alignment test.
- Compute the current date once in the current bucket tests.

The detection window ends backfill_days before the latest scored bucket.
With include_current_bucket that is the bucket still in progress, so the
window moved forward by one bucket and the last complete bucket dropped
out of it. Because backfill_days is raised to a single bucket for weekly
(7 days) and monthly (30 days) buckets, a finished bucket was then usually
never tested again: a dimension that skipped a whole week or month was
zero-filled but not flagged.

The window now ends at the last complete bucket, as it does without the
option, and the current bucket is tested on top of it.

Metrics are appended to data_monitoring_metrics on every run and read
back as the newest row per metric id. The current bucket is not
zero-filled, so a dimension that had rows earlier in the bucket but has
none now writes no new row, and the metric from the earlier run kept
being scored until the bucket ended. Deleting a bad upload therefore did
not clear the failure it caused.

The bucket in progress is recalculated on every run, so its metrics now
only come from the current run.

Two questions on downstream consumers: with the option on, elementary_test_results rows can have a bucket_end in the future with a partial value, and data_monitoring_metrics holds partial snapshots until the bucket completes. Do the CLI report and Cloud ingestion/charts handle that cleanly, or assume bucket_end <= now? Worth a quick check before the Abbott rollout.

The docs page (elementary repo) should land with the release. It should say that a dimension with no rows in the in-progress bucket isn't flagged until the bucket ends, and that a partial upload looks like a drop. The branch is also behind master.

A stored metric only counted as cached if it was calculated after its
bucket ended, and this applied to every anomaly test and collect_metrics.
The rule compares the warehouse clock (updated_at) with dbt's run time,
so clock skew or a current_timestamp that isn't really UTC (DuckDB in a
non-UTC session) could make complete buckets look partial. Only tests
with include_current_bucket store partial buckets, so the rule now only
applies to them and the default path is unchanged.

include_current_bucket and detection_end had to be passed together, and
passing the flag without detection_end silently zero-filled the current
bucket. The caller now passes zero_fill_max_bucket_end, which is the
detection end when include_current_bucket is on.

Adds tests for the missing timestamp_column error, 4-hour buckets on a
source and on a table model, and a partial bucket that is recalculated
after a gap longer than backfill_days. Also explains why the fixed dates
of the previous-bucket test stay valid after they pass.

Thanks for the review, @MikaKerman. On your two summary points:

Downstream consumers. I checked the CLI (report and alerts) and Cloud. Nothing filters, drops or crashes on a future bucket_end: alerts, incidents and time windows all use the run time. Three things are misleading, all on the UI side:

  • The report chart and the Cloud anomaly chart anchor the shaded detection window on the newest end_time. With the option on, that is the future end of the current bucket, so with monthly buckets in a 31-day month the last complete month is drawn grey as training, even though it's tested and may be the one that failed. Anchoring on max_bucket_end, which the result rows already carry, would fix it.
  • The in-progress bucket is plotted at its future end date, with no "in progress" marker.
  • Cloud's currentVsExpected (also behind MCP get_asset_status) reports an anomalous in-progress bucket with its partial value and a future observedAt.

dimension_anomalies metrics aren't synced to Cloud (only collect_metrics ones are), so the duplicate snapshots in data_monitoring_metrics never reach it. None of the three blocks the package change, but they're worth fixing before the Abbott rollout.

Docs. Agreed. The docs page should land with the release and say both things: a dimension with no rows in the in-progress bucket isn't flagged until the bucket ends, and a partial upload looks like a drop.

The branch is up to date with master again, and the alignment fix is split out into #1078.

Moves the bucket alignment from the incremental query into the
backfill_bucket_start set, so the query line is unchanged from master.

The test name is also the seeded table name, and at 65 characters it
was rejected by Postgres, which caps identifiers at 63.

Resolve conflicts with the backfill alignment fix (#1078) and the weekly buckets fix (#1083):
take master's alignment tests and helpers, keep the include_current_bucket tests, and count
weeks in days in get_current_bucket_end_expr like the rest of the bucket math.
