Git for Windows v2.56.0.windows.1

Changes since Git for Windows v2.55.0(5) (August 20th 2026)

Following the MSYS2 project, on which Git for Windows is based, Windows 8.1 support was dropped; In doing so, internal paths changed (/mingw64/bin/git.exe does not exist anymore, /ucrt64/bin/git.exe takes its role; if this breaks your setups, consider switching to /cmd/git.exe instead, which is guaranteed to stay stable).

An issue with the installer for the previous version (v2.55.0.windows.5) caused the "Use external OpenSSH" option to be disabled for some users. This caused the bundled version of OpenSSH to be installed and overwrote any previously-saved choice of external OpenSSH. If you rely on an external OpenSSH installation, and you updated to v2.55.0(5), you should consider re-running the latest installer with "Only show new options" unchecked so that you can re-enable the external OpenSSH option. The bundled version of OpenSSH will be uninstalled automatically. If you do not rely on an external OpenSSH installation, or you did not install v2.55.0(5) specifically, you can s...

Patch changelog

v1.9.34

  • Added new exec.cwd_first setting (off by default) to make Executable Completions list files from the current directory before other files (#794).
  • Updated the clink-diagnostics bindable command to automatically include performance cost details if classifiers, prompts, hinters, or events exceed a small threshold. When automatically showing the cost details, it filters entries with zero costs. Use a numeric argument to include more diagnostic details (e.g. type Alt-1 or Alt-2 or etc before invoking the clink-diagnostics command).
  • Fixed the "small cost threshold" for classifiers and hinters in clink-diagnostics (it was 1000x more sensitive than intended).
  • Fixed another rare edge case where a Lua script could potentially make Clink miss clearing part of the input display area.

v1.9.33

  • Fixed the cua-select-word, cua-backward-bigword, and cua-forward-bigword commands so they don't immediately clear the selection.
  • Fixed a convoluted edge case where a Lua script could potentially make Clink miss clearing part of the input display area.
  • Fixed clink set debug.log_terminal true for x86 builds.
  • Fixed #903; command word matches that contain / need quoting, for example when the match.translate_slashes setting is slashes.

v1.9.32

Recent Breaking Change

  • Breaking Change: the "gray text" auto-suggestions display is now off by default, due to too many complaints and frustration and support cost.
    • The Suggestions List since v1.8.0 is friendlier and more powerful; toggle it by pressing F2 or enable it by default via clink set suggestionlist.default true.
    • The "gray text" or "inline" auto-suggestions display can be turned on again via clink set autosuggest.inline true if preferred.

v1.9.32

  • Fixed agnoster, Headline, and pure custom prompts to show just the base directory name for the Python virtual env.
  • Fixed rl.gethistoryindex() during the onbeginedit callback and the first prompt filter per input line.
  • Fixed width calculation for combining marks such as diacritics; there's no fully reliable way to predict how a terminal will render combining marks, but Clink tries to accommodate different OS versions and console configuration modes and grapheme combinations to predict as closely as possible.

v1.9.31

Recent Breaking Change

  • Breaking Change: the "gray text" auto-suggestions display is now off by default, due to too many complaints and frustration and support cost.
    • The Suggestions List since v1.8.0 is friendlier and more powerful; toggle it by pressing F2 or enable it by default via clink set suggestionlist.default true.
    • The "gray text" or "inline" auto-suggestions display can be turned on again via clink set autosuggest.inline true if preferred.

v1.9.31

  • Added new Lua API rl.gethistoryindex() which returns the current interactive history index, if any.
  • Fixed git.isgitdir() and git.getgitdir() to not get confused by the empty .git directories that the Codex app leaves scattered around (due to a bug in Codex that's currently tracked by a large number of open issues).
  • Fixed :chaincommand("doskey") to be able to expand doskey aliases (regression introduced in v1.6.18).
  • Fixed an undo list memory management bug in clink-reset-line that could leak memory (regression introduced in v1.8.0)...

v1.9.30

Recent Breaking Change

  • Breaking Change: the "gray text" auto-suggestions display is now off by default, due to too many complaints and frustration and support cost.
    • The Suggestions List since v1.8.0 is friendlier and more powerful; toggle it by pressing F2 or enable it by default via clink set suggestionlist.default true.
    • The "gray text" or "inline" auto-suggestions display can be turned on again via clink set autosuggest.inline true if preferred.

v1.9.30

  • Added new Lua API rl.issuggestionlistactive() which returns whether the suggestion list is currently active.
  • Fixed to not show suggestions if the input line contains only space characters.
  • Fixed clink.onfiltermatches() events (regression introduced in v1.9.26).

v1.9.29

Recent Breaking Change

  • Breaking Change: the "gray text" auto-suggestions display is now off by default, due to too many complaints and frustration and support cost.
    • The Suggestions List since v1.8.0 is friendlier and more powerful; toggle it by pressing F2 or enable it by default via clink set suggestionlist.default true.
    • The "gray text" or "inline" auto-suggestions display can be turned on again via clink set autosuggest.inline true if preferred.

v1.9.29

  • Added new Lua APIs to query Readline's kill-ring (see rl.getkillringcount() and etc).
  • Changed oh-my-posh.clinkprompt to work around an issue where in error cases oh-my-p...

Minor changelog

Windows Terminal Preview v1.26.2734.0

We're coming out of our long Summer (northern hemisphere) hibernation to bring you a new Preview release of Windows Terminal: 1.26! We've been hard at work on the Settings page, workspaces, notifications, and general fit and finish. Lots more community contributions this time around (thank you to all of you!) and many of the bug fixes you see here have been backported to 1.25 and--in some cases--1.24!

Features

  • This release includes our newly-redesigned settings UI! Broadly, the categories are the same, but we've given a new interface to most of our settings, simplified wording, moved things into logical groups, and more. Profiles is probably the biggest difference, where we've moved all of the profile tabs, color schemes and the Defaults section into one top-level "Profiles" area (#20232) (#20743) (#20336) (#20665) (#20200) (#20658) (#20646) (#20215) (#20199)
  • We have added early support for "workspaces," or named Terminal windows which remember what was open in them that you can close and come back to. Access Workspaces with the new icon to the left of the tab list (#20314) (#20663)
  • We now support applications emitting a notification with OSC 777 (Desktop Notif...

Windows Terminal v1.25.2733.0

Terminal 1.25 is finally stable!

Here are the highlights:

  • A new settings search experience! We have a lot of settings; hopefully this helps you find them.
  • A rich "actions" editor that will let you better customize how you interact with Terminal.
  • Support for the "Kitty" input protocol, for a highly opinionated way to distinguish keyboard keys and how they were pressed.
  • Window persistence with or without the scrollback history.
  • Community translations into Ukrainian and Serbian (Cyrillic).
  • The ability to configure how wide "ambiguous" Unicode characters are for improved compatibility with Chinese, Japanese and Korean console applications.

Please see the following release notes for additional details.

Windows Terminal v1.24.12741.0

While Terminal 1.25 is slowly rolling out (as we get new reliability info, prove it doesn't super-explode, etc.), we've decided to update 1.24 with a couple quick fixes as well to make sure you're not left out in the cold.

Changes

  • Panes can no longer be reduced below 2 cells in either direction, to prevent screen corruption (#20564) (thanks @zhangxaochen!)
  • We got rid of the "new tab" animation, as it made the application appear slower (#20543)

Bug Fixes

  • IME candidate windows will no longer be positioned incorrectly when Terminal is maximized (#20627) (thanks @9enki!)
  • Terminal will no longer send arrow key inputs (and others) in the middle of an IME composition (#20471) (thanks @sanguneo!)
  • Media paths referring to icon resources such as foo.exe,-1 will once again work (#20572) (thanks @arista-ms!)
  • The font face selector in the settings UI will no longer cause Terminal to undergo rapid unscheduled disassembly (#20255) (thanks @danyalahmed1995!)
    • ... it will also no longer instantly forget what you put in it (#20359) (thanks @danyalahmed1995!)
  • The JSON settings schema has been updated to include persistedLayoutAndContent as a valid option...

Windows Terminal Preview v1.25.1912.0

Since we decided to push Terminal 1.26 out a little bit, please enjoy these bug fixes instead.

Bug Fixes

  • Terminal should no longer crash when you drag a small tab into a larger window (which never crashed for some people, and always crashed for others) (#20366) (thanks @yuu61!)
  • Terminal will now make a screen reader-audible announcement when you interact with the expand/collapse option in the Settings page (#20275)
  • Pressing Enter in the Export Text dialog will no longer send Enter to the connected application (#20358)
  • Scrolling the screen should no longer result in us failing to detect URLs in it before the next refresh (#20357)
  • The compatibility.reloadEnvironmentVariables setting will no longer be ignored when you use wt.exe <command> (#20321)
  • The actions editor should now update the action name more consistently (#20381)
  • We have fixed a memory corruption issue in DRCS font handling (#20409)
  • We have speculatively moved some initialization earlier to prevent a deadlock caused by the NVIDIA graphics driver (#20351)
  • We no longer reset your font size if you zoom and we reload settings (for whatever reason) (#20230)

Windows Terminal v1.24.11911.0

The stable channel just keeps getting stabler! We decided to push Terminal 1.26 out a little bit, so hopefully this set of fixes helps fill the void where it would be.
