TypeSafe's Jev is a new kind of model. Give it a piece of text and a few typed questions, and in about 200 ms it returns a probability for each answer instead of prose. One obvious use is judging whether a coding agent's next shell command or file edit is dangerous before it runs. Nobody has measured how well Jev does that on real coding sessions. jev-shadow measures it.
It is a Claude Code plugin. While you work, it asks Jev five questions about every command and edit Claude proposes: will this destroy data, leak data, run code fetched from the network, weaken security, or touch files outside the project. It writes Jev's answers next to what Claude Code's own safety classifier decided about the same call. It runs in the background, adds no delay, and cannot change what Claude does. After a few days you run one command and get a report: per hazard, how often Jev agreed with the classifier, how often it would have blocked something the classifier let through, and what each call cost in time and tokens.
Who it is for:
- You use Claude Code in auto mode and want to know whether Jev is worth trusting before wiring it into anything. You get calibration data from your own sessions, and nothing changes while it collects.
- You run Claude Code without the built-in classifier (Manual mode,
dontAsk), or another agent once the v0.2 adapters land (Codex, pi).enforcemode turns the same five questions into allow, ask, or deny before the tool runs. - You are building on Jev and want a tested redaction layer, a rule table for routine commands, and a hook harness that fails safe.
What it is not: a replacement for Claude Code's classifier, or a way to make Claude Code faster or cheaper. The research that led here is in docs/research/README.md; its short version is that for auto-mode users there is nothing to gate yet, only something to measure.
One tool call, three hook events, one log line each. The report joins them later by tool_use_id.

In shadow mode only the observer does work, and it has no way to write to Claude's stdout, so the session is unchanged whatever Jev answers. In enforce mode the gate takes the same path synchronously and prints a decision, which Claude Code applies before the tool runs. In an auto-mode session the gate stands down and observes, because the classifier already gates.
claude plugin marketplace add dreyfus92/jev-shadow
claude plugin install jev-shadow@jev-shadowThe install prompts for jev_api_key. It is stored as a sensitive plugin option and reaches the hook process as an environment variable. Leave it empty to use the mock backend.
The plugin installs disabled. Enable it per repository, which writes .claude/settings.local.json (not committed):
cd ~/Documents/your/project
claude plugin enable jev-shadow@jev-shadow --scope localTo try a checkout without installing it, point Claude Code at the directory and enable it for that run. --plugin-dir alone is not enough: the plugin ships with defaultEnabled: false, so its hooks stay unregistered until an enabledPlugins entry says otherwise, and a --plugin-dir plugin's id is jev-shadow@inline.
pnpm install && pnpm build
claude --plugin-dir /path/to/jev-shadow --settings '{"enabledPlugins":{"jev-shadow@inline":true}}'The log for that run lands in ~/.claude/plugins/data/jev-shadow-inline/log.jsonl.
Nothing leaves the machine until a config file exists. Create it with:
jev-shadow mode shadowThis writes ~/.config/jev-shadow/config.json (or $JEV_SHADOW_CONFIG). The file is user-owned and never read from a repository, so a cloned project cannot raise the mode or redirect the backend.

The model is pinned to jev-1.13.0 on every backend; Vercel reports an unversioned model id, and the report marks that group as unpinned.
offsends nothing and logs nothing. It is the kill switch and takes effect on the next tool call in every running session.shadowasks Jev from a background hook, logs the verdict next to the classifier's decision, and changes nothing. The synchronous hook still spawns anodeprocess per matched call that exits before reading stdin. Measured on an M-series Mac: p50 50 ms per spawn, of which barenode -e 0is 39 ms, so the plugin's own cost is about 11 ms.enforceruns a synchronous gate that printsaskordeny, or nothing for allow. In an auto-mode session it behaves asshadow.policy.onError(defaultallow) decides what a failed Jev call becomes. IndontAskmode and inclaude -pwithout a permission prompt tool, askis a hard deny. A hook that reaches its timeout always fails open, whateveronErrorsays.
JEV_SHADOW_MODE in the environment may lower the mode but never raise it. A missing or invalid config file means off.
Routine calls never leave the machine. A local rule table clears read-only commands, the project's own test and build scripts, and in-project edits. Anything the shell splitter cannot parse (substitution, heredocs, subshells, unbalanced quotes) goes to Jev. Secrets are redacted before any text is clipped, and the redaction order is enforced by the type checker.
Inside Claude Code, /jev-shadow:report. Outside, jev-shadow report [--log <path>]. The log lives at ${CLAUDE_PLUGIN_DATA}/log.jsonl, one line per hook event, joined on tool_use_id at read time. Only permission_mode: "auto" attempts are compared with the classifier.
