Issue Subcategory:

Interactive element cannot be reached by keyboard.

User Experience:

People primarily using a keyboard, switch, or a screen reader may not be able to move focus to the control and may not be able to perform its functionality.

Repro Steps:

Launch Winforms app > List, grid and tree > Observe the issue.

Actual Result:

Keyboard focus does not reach the column headers. Users cannot access sorting controls or adjust column widths using the keyboard.

Expected Result:

Column headers should be keyboard accessible and receive focus. Users should be able to access sorting functionality and adjust column widths through keyboard interaction.

How to Fix:

Use natively focusable elements (<button>, <a href>, <input>), which are keyboard reachable by default; as a last resort for custom controls, add tabindex="0" and implement keyboard event handlers for activation. If your project uses a design system or component library, its controls may already be keyboard reachable — confirm in its accessibility documentation that the component is configured correctly

Note issue:
Issue 1: Launch Winforms app > Inputs > The file control above the input tab cannot be accessed using the keyboard because focus does not move to it.

Environment details:

Application Name: WinForms .NET Runtime
OS: Windows 11 Enterprise Insider Preview 26300.8276

This appears to be by design rather than a WinForms issue.

DataGridView column headers do not receive keyboard focus directly. However, the column operations mentioned in this issue are already keyboard accessible from the current cell:

    • F3 sorts the current column when SortMode is Automatic.
    • Alt + Left/Right Arrow adjusts the current column width.

Screen readers also announce the associated column header when navigating through cells.

Therefore, direct keyboard focus on the column header is not required to access these operations.
