feat(shortcuts): unify pane paging with configurable overlap - #811
Conversation
📝 Summary
Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to Paging can occasionally misroute or drop a page keypress right after a terminal program changes screens or during heavy output. These are narrow timing cases, and the core paging feature works. They are worth fixing, but they should not block the merge. Pre-merge checks |

Resolve conflicts with main: keep both CHANGELOG sides (paging entry now linked and credited), count agy-chat and pane-paging browser scripts (41), and combine PaneTerminal imports. Main's new Turkish catalog gets the paging strings, and pageOverlapRows joins SETTING_SCOPE as a device setting like shortcutOverrides.
Prepending an older page restores the reader's place by moving scrollTop down; record that offset so the next scroll event is not read as a downward page that restores following. PageUp at the loaded top, where the position cannot move, still asks for the earlier page.
Chromium and Firefox move the current tab with Ctrl+Shift+PageUp/PageDown off macOS, so Settings marks those keys as possibly intercepted there. The browser scripts' overlap steppers now fail with the shown value instead of clicking forever.
…ts latest output Review follow-up on devswha#811 (Codex astra medium, 2026-10-12): - A program leaving its alternate screen hands the history back to the shell, but the browser's scroll metrics still say zero until the next read lands. A paging shortcut in that window went to the shell as a raw PageUp/PageDown. TerminalViewportTools now remembers the output version each metrics read followed; with metrics older than the latest output, a page is held for the next read (up to 1 s) and then scrolls history or reaches the program, as the fresh metrics say. The page cannot know of an exit before it sees the output, so the test waits for the shell's return to be drawn. - application-paging regression: the fixture quits on "q" and restores the main screen with history behind it; the metrics read is slowed; a page asked for after the exit sends no key and scrolls the shell's history once the read lands. Fails on the previous component. - The two new browser scripts are typechecked with the tools (one stray `focus` option removed). Co-Authored-By: Claude Fable 5.1 <noreply@anthropic.com>

Maintainer pass (Codex review, 2026-10-12) on top of @devswha's earlier fixes; one follow-up pushed as c5bac10, with current main merged in as 9385193 (the App.tsx conflict with #861's split layout resolved: paging controls bind to the selected pane of the active half).
Everything else in the review came back fine: paging distance and overlap clamping, the explicit-away state across older pages, the plain-key guards (composer, other fields, dialogs, IME, terminal lens, explicit bindings), the application-input guards, device-scoped settings, four dictionaries, lane count 43. Verified locally: typecheck, build, unit tests, the three paging browser scripts. Merging once the fork CI finishes. Thanks for the careful work and the honest validation notes. |

- Line 179: Update the `heldPage` handling when `metricsOutput !==
outputVersion` so repeated page requests are queued in order instead of
replacing one another. Replay each retained request when the fresh read
resolves, and discard requests when their hold expires.
- Around line 126-130: Update the held-page handling in `read()` so stale metric
reads do not cause a pending page request to expire without being applied;
retain it across stale completions or refresh its deadline, and apply it once a
fresh read is available, including when reported history is zero.
- Around line 176-179: Update scrollPage to validate metric freshness against
the latest output and terminal dimensions before choosing either paging route.
If metrics are stale, hold the request until fresh metrics arrive; only then
select between native-history scrolling through writeRef.current and application
paging through onApplicationPage.

…unknown event fields Review follow-ups on #866 (Codex astra medium, 2026-10-12), with the two settings #811 added meanwhile: - The browser posted its settings snapshot to the local server as soon as the app was unlocked, before the version-3 notice and whatever the switch or the environment said. Both producers (the notice line and Settings → About) now read the server's status first and tell the snapshot only while telemetry is on, not blocked and the notice seen; the first snapshot rides with the acknowledgement, and turning the switch on brings the snapshot the browser kept to itself. Off or blocked, About still shows the switch and the preview from the status alone. - The receiver refuses an event body with a field no sender has ever had, so a misspelled or foreign field is a 400 instead of silently dropped; the `changed_settings` list of senders before 0.4.9 is still accepted and not stored. - `pageOverlapRows` (0-100) and `chatPageKeys` (#811) join the schema and the projection: 45 values and 7 flags/counts. The strict receiver means the Worker must be deployed before the app release that adds a key, or events are refused and retried unreported. - `voiceLanguage` stays in the allowlist: an explicit preference from a fixed list, noted in the review as the one value naming a region beyond the UI language. - telemetry regression: the first snapshot is the acknowledgement's, and an opted-out page sends none on reload; receiver tests for the refused field and the legacy sender. Change
An iPad with an external keyboard can switch panes, but paging a chat currently requires touch. Add configurable Mod+Shift+PageUp/PageDown actions for the active chat transcript and native terminal history, with a device setting for 0–100 overlapping lines (one by default).
Settings → Chat can also opt into plain PageUp/PageDown while the composer has focus. The option is off by default, keeps the draft, selection and focus, and respects explicit app bindings, other text fields, dialogs and IME composition. Plain page keys in terminal mode remain available to the running program.
When herdr explicitly reports that a terminal has no native scrollback, invoking the paging action sends plain PageUp/PageDown through the existing live input lease. This makes the same configured action usable with application-managed history such as Codex's. The application controls its own page length; the overlap setting applies to chat and native history. Disconnected, observing, held, ended or secret-input panes do not send application page keys.
This PR is independent from the shortcut recorder (#812) and composer focus (#822). It keeps the existing Mod+Shift shortcut convention, adds all four translations and documentation, and includes an Unreleased changelog entry.
Fixes #808.
