Change

A chat message with an invisible character in it (a zero-width space, a joiner, a byte-order mark; pasted text often carries them) seemed lost. The chat cleared its box, but the message never reached the agent.

Reproduced live on Claude Code 2.1.294, sent exactly as the composer does (bracketed paste, then Enter):

Removed 1 invisible character · review and press Enter to send
────────────────
❯ helloworld test
────────────────

Claude Code takes the characters out and, instead of sending, keeps the message in its input until it is reviewed. The chat has already cleared its box by then.

That hint does not stay. With a turn already on screen its row goes to the status line (✻ Cooked for 1s · done): in 20 seconds of polling after an Enter it never showed, while ❯ timingtest sat in the box the whole time. So the hint cannot be the only signal.

A card for the held message (parseClaudeHeld, responder claude-held):

  • When it shows. Claude's input box holds a message, and either:
    • the hint is right over the box, or
    • the box holds what the chat last sent to this pane, less only invisible characters.
  • Remembering the send. For the second case submitText records the chat's last message per pane (noteSubmitted), only when it carried such characters, for 10 minutes.
  • Matching. removedInvisible compares the two without whitespace, since the box wraps a long message. Every character the box lacks must be invisible: format controls (zero-width, bidi, tags, BOM), combining marks, or Hangul fillers.
  • The card. It names how many characters were removed and shows the message as Claude holds it.
    • Send presses Enter.
    • Discard presses Ctrl+C, which clears Claude's input.
    • Like every card, an answer first checks that the screen still shows it.
  • When it doesn't show. Nothing else is a held message: the hint over an empty input (it lingers after a send), a box that differs in anything visible, or a quoted hint with output under the box. Typing a new draft removes the hint.

Validation

  • New server/prompt.test.ts cases, built on the live screen:

    • the hint and the box give a card, with Send → enter and Discard → ctrl+c;
    • a held message of several lines, and the count of removed characters;
    • the box alone, plus what the chat sent, gives a card; a box that differs, or no send, gives none;
    • no card for an empty input, a quoted hint, or the words without a box;
    • removedInvisible, including U+FEFF (which \s would have taken for a space) and a Hangul filler.

Two of these fail on main.

  • Live, Claude Code 2.1.294 in an isolated herdr session, through this server:

    • POST /api/pane/prompt/answer with Discard emptied Claude's input.
    • With Send, Claude answered the message.
    • In the browser: a message typed into the chat composer with a zero-width space produced the card. Send cleared the card and Claude replied.
  • bun run test:unit 1818 pass, tsc --noEmit clean.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Fixed an issue in Claude Code 2.1.294 where messages containing invisible characters could remain in the input after Claude removed those characters.
    • These messages now appear in a review card. Select Send to submit the retained message, or Discard to clear it when Claude is not working.
    • Queued messages are blocked while a message is held, even if its warning is no longer visible. After the held message is handled, the same text can be queued again.

Walkthrough

Successful submissions update per-pane tracking. Claude prompt parsing detects held messages and offers Send or Discard. Pending-message checks account for held prompts and do not treat their own paste as a held message.

Priority: ⬇️ Low

Estimated code review effort: 3 (Moderate) | ~20 minutes

Change: Bug fix

Suggested reviewers: devswha

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 13912

Some queued messages can remain pasted but unsubmitted after a retained hint triggers the pre-Enter check, requiring terminal review. Narrow text or viewport matches can also misclassify or hide the card. These cases are bounded and recoverable, but merit owner awareness.

Security Architecture Review

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 13912

Existing access checks and explicit user confirmation limit exposure. However, an unavailable screen-state check can leave suggested text misidentified as a held draft, making Send or Discard behave differently from what the card promises.

Retained concerns

  • Low · security · inferred: The new held-message actions remain available when grey-input verification fails. A stale removal hint can identify an empty box's suggestion as a held draft, while a failed ANSI read is treated as “not grey.” If this persists during answer validation, an authorized user can send the suggestion or invoke the exit action rather than discard a draft. Successful grey reads suppress the card, changed card identities reject answers, and an explicit user action remains necessary. Runtime occurrence and attacker influence over suggestion content are not established.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The directly affected control scope is the pane addressed by an authorized answer request: Send presses Enter and Discard presses Ctrl+C. Suggested work would run with the existing agent's capabilities; the inspected change does not establish new credentials or a broader infrastructure privilege. Downstream asset and data-store exposure is not established.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The conditional path is a lingering removal hint over grey suggestion text, followed by unavailable or inconclusive colour validation, a matching current card, and an authorized answer. This can preserve terminal actions under an incorrect held-draft interpretation. Source supports the missing-validation path; it does not prove attacker control of suggestions or an end-to-end exploit.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — The held responder inherits the existing HTTP access boundary, including authentication, mutation-origin checks, and restrictions on watching devices. The route was already pane-id-addressed without the pending-delivery attachment lease; the full comparison shows no removal of those controls or newly introduced cross-pane authorization bypass.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Potentially committed answers end the current asking and clear the held candidate, while a connection failure known to precede key delivery preserves the answerable state. Pending post-paste failures remain explicitly uncertain. These controls reduce duplicate execution after ambiguous failures, but the external terminal operation's atomicity is not established.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Represent grey-input verification as confirmed draft, confirmed grey input, or unknown. When verification is unknown, withhold held-message terminal actions and direct the user to inspect the terminal rather than treating missing evidence as a confirmed draft.

…characters

Claude Code 2.1.294 takes zero-width and other invisible characters out
of a message and, instead of sending it, keeps it in its input until it
is reviewed. The chat had already sent it and cleared its box, so the
message seemed gone while it sat in the terminal's input.

Claude says so over the box only for a moment ("Removed 1 invisible
character · review and press Enter to send"; a turn's status line takes
that row), so the box counts on its own as well: the server notes what
the chat last sent to a pane when it carried invisible characters, and
a box holding that text less only invisible ones is a held message. The
card shows the message and offers Send (Enter) and Discard (Ctrl+C
clears Claude's input); each answer checks the screen first, as every
card does. Checked live against Claude Code 2.1.294.
A queued message is sent by dispatchPendingText, not submitText, so a
held message it sent was never recorded, and pendingContext asked for a
card without the recorded send: once Claude's hint had gone, a queued
message was pasted over the message Claude still held.

dispatchPendingText now records its message after the Enter (after the
checks, which would otherwise take the pasted message itself for a held
one), and pendingContext passes the recorded send, so a held message
refuses queued input as any open card does. A contract test drives the
queue past a delivered message that the screen then shows held.

Comment thread server/prompt.ts
The card's Discard presses Ctrl+C, which clears Claude Code's input only
while it waits. Under a running turn the same key interrupts the turn
("Interrupted · What should Claude do instead?") and leaves the held
message in the box (measured live on 2.1.294).

The card now offers Send alone while herdr reports the pane working, and
Discard comes back when the turn ends. The choices are part of the card's
id, so a Discard tapped on a card read before the turn began is refused
with prompt_changed instead of reaching the turn.

Route tests cover that, and that a box edited or sent from the terminal
after the card was read refuses the answer without a key.
Claude Code's hint ("Removed 1 invisible character ...") outlasts the
message for a moment once it is sent or cleared in the terminal. The box
under it is empty again and shows its own grey text, the new-session tip
or a suggested prompt, which reads as a message in a plain-text screen.
The card then offered Enter, which sends Claude's suggestion, and Ctrl+C,
which on an empty input asks to leave Claude.

A held-message card is now checked against an ANSI read of the box, the
way the suggestion reader already tells grey text from typed text, on
every read and so before every answer. A read that fails or shows no box
leaves the card as it was.

Found by the Codex review of this PR; the route test fails without it.
What the chat last sent with invisible characters stayed noted for ten
minutes, also after its held message was sent or dropped. The same words
queued again without the characters were then taken for that held
message by the check between the paste and its Enter: the delivery ended
in submit_changed with the message left in Claude's box, where it showed
as a held one.

The check between a delivery's own paste and its Enter no longer asks
whether the box holds the noted message; the check before the paste still
does. A held-message card that was answered forgets the note, and so does
a pane that closed.

Found by the Codex review of this PR. The contract test queues the same
words after a held message and fails without the change, as does the
route test for an answered card.

Thanks for this, @Yoonwoo-Ha. The bug is real and the write-up made it easy to check: on main a message with a zero-width space sent from the chat really does sit in Claude Code 2.1.294's input with nothing in the chat to say so. I reproduced it in an isolated herdr session and with a test against main's parser (no card there, a card on this branch).

To get it ready to merge I pushed a few commits on top of yours rather than send it back. Nothing is asked of you.

What I changed

  • Merged main in (ab135d5) and moved the changelog entry into the current ## [Unreleased] → ### Fixed, with the PR link and your credit.
  • No Discard while Claude works (11556c2). Discard presses Ctrl+C. That clears the input while Claude waits, but under a running turn the same key interrupts the turn ("Interrupted · What should Claude do instead?") and leaves the held message where it is; measured live on 2.1.294. The card now offers Send alone while the pane is working, and Discard returns when the turn ends. The choices are part of the card's id, so a Discard tapped on a card read before the turn began is refused.
  • No card for the grey text of an empty box (dc25634). The hint outlasts the message for a moment once it is sent or cleared in the terminal. If the empty box then shows its tip or a suggested prompt, that grey text read as a message, and Enter on it would have sent Claude's suggestion. A held-message card is now checked against an ANSI read of the box, the way the suggestion reader already tells grey text from typed text.
  • The same words sent again are not a held message (29380e5). The noted send stayed for ten minutes even after the card was answered, so the same message queued again without the character failed at the check between its paste and its Enter (submit_changed, text left in the box). That check no longer consults the note, an answered card forgets it, and so does a closed pane.
  • Queued delivery reads the grey text the same way (05b8e1b, from CodeRabbit's second pass). The check ahead of a queued message now uses the same grey-text test as the card, so it does not refuse a message for a card that never shows.
  • A scrolled viewport's grey box hides no held message (1391214, from CodeRabbit's third pass). The grey-text check has to read the viewport (herdr gives colors for that read alone), so it now counts the grey text only when it is the very text the card took for the message off the live screen.
  • A queued message's own paste is not a held message (7dadd8d, CodeRabbit's comment outside the diff on index.ts:588). With the hint still up from the message before, the check between a queued message's paste and its Enter read that paste as a held message and gave up with submit_changed. The check before the paste already found the box free of one, so the one after it no longer does.
  • Merged main in again (9841ad0 after fix(sidebar): follow-ups from #529's review #603, 36658ae after fix(chat): show Claude Code's informational notices, such as an unknown command #600).

Each of these has a test that fails without it: route tests in server/prompt.test.ts (Send, Discard, a box edited or emptied in the terminal after the card was read, the grey box, the answered card) and one more case in server/pending-input.contract.test.ts.

One thing in the description that I measured differently: typing in the terminal does not remove the hint on 2.1.294; it stays while the box is edited. That turns out fine, because the card follows the box (its body is part of its id) and an answer to an older card is refused.

Looked at and left as they are (from an adversarial review pass; none can press a key the user did not ask for)

  • The CodeRabbit thread on whitespace: kept, see the reply there. The box wraps, so spaces cannot be told from line breaks on the screen.
  • removedInvisible also counts combining marks, so the number in the card's title can differ from Claude's own count once the hint has gone.
  • A message that contains a line of box-drawing dashes, is longer than 40 rows, or sits over a footer of more than 8 lines gets no card (the parser gives up; nothing is sent).
  • Once the ten minutes have passed, or the held message was edited visibly in the terminal, queued delivery no longer waits behind it. That is how any draft typed in the terminal behaves today, on main too; worth its own issue rather than this PR.
  • A box-shaped quote of the hint in Claude's output is only read as the input box when no real input box is drawn under it, which Claude Code does not do while it runs.
  • By the code (not tried live): a held message sent with Enter in the terminal rather than from the card stays noted for the ten minutes, so the same words back in the box, typed or recalled from history, would show the card again. Send would send exactly what is shown.
  • The "no Discard while working" rule relies on herdr reporting the pane as working, which it does for Claude Code.

Verified with bun run check fast and the full pending-input contract file on the head I pushed (7dadd8d).

The check ahead of a queued message read the screen as plain text only,
so under Claude's hint left over an empty box its grey suggestion still
counted as a held message there, while the card's reader had already
dropped it: the message was refused with agent_blocked for a card that
never showed.

Both paths now ask the same question (claudeHeldIsGrey). From the

Exclude the delivery’s own paste from hint-based held detection.

If Claude leaves the removal hint above an empty grey box, the first pending check permits delivery. If the hint remains after the new message is pasted, this pre-Enter check passes pasted: true, but parseClaudeHeld still uses the hint to classify the new paste as held. The check returns agent_blocked; delivery skips Enter and reports submit_changed. Suppress claude-held detection for the delivery’s own paste while retaining checks for other prompts.

The PR objectives report that typing does not remove Claude’s hint.

The grey-text check reads the pane's viewport, because herdr gives
colors for that read alone: an ANSI read of the live screen ("detection",
where the card itself is read) carries no escapes on herdr 0.9.3. A pane
scrolled into its history can show an older input box there, and its grey
suggestion then hid the card of a message the live screen still held,
and let queued delivery past it.

The grey text now counts only when it is the very text the card took for
the message. From the CodeRabbit review; the route test fails without it.
…nt left up

Claude Code keeps its hint ("Removed 1 invisible character ...") up for a
moment after the held message is sent or cleared, and typing does not
take it down. A queued message delivered in that moment was pasted into
the empty box, and the check between its paste and its Enter then read
the hint over that paste as a held message: no Enter, submit_changed, and
the message left in Claude's box.

The check before the paste already found the box free of a held message,
so the one after it no longer takes this delivery's own paste for one.
Other prompts still stop the Enter. From the CodeRabbit review; the
contract test fails without it.

the same probe on this branch a card "Claude Code removed 1 invisible character" with Send and Discard, body helloworld test
bun test ./server/prompt.test.ts on 1391214 208 pass, 0 fail
the same with server/prompt.ts from ab135d5 (the contributor's change with main merged, before the lane's commits) 4 fail: no Discard while Claude works, a Discard tapped before the turn began presses nothing, Claude's grey placeholder is no held message, the same words sent again are a new message
the same with server/prompt.ts from 36658ae (before 1391214) 1 fail: the scrolled-viewport case

Read:

  • Nothing is sent on the app's own initiative: Send (Enter) and Discard (Ctrl+C) go only through the prompt-answer route, on a card whose id includes the box's text and its choices, so an answer to an older card is refused.
  • Discard is not offered while Claude works, where Ctrl+C would interrupt the turn; the card is not shown over Claude's own grey text, where Enter would send Claude's suggestion.
  • Queued delivery waits behind a held message instead of pasting into its box.
  • The per-pane note of what the chat sent is dropped when the card is answered, when the pane closes, and after ten minutes.

I did not run server/pending-input.contract.test.ts (it needs a live herdr) or a live Claude Code: the lane ran both, and CI's "Integration and browser" is green on 1391214. The Lows in the lane's comment are fine as they are; none can press a key the user did not ask for. Both required checks and CodeRabbit are green, with every thread resolved.

Correction to my review above: the branch moved to 7dadd8d while I was writing it, so the tests I listed ran on 1391214. I have now read the one commit in between (7dadd8d, "a queued message's own paste is no held message under a hint left up"): the check ahead of a queued delivery's Enter no longer takes that delivery's own paste for a held message when Claude's hint is still up from an earlier one, and server/pending-input.contract.test.ts gains that case. It changes only when an Enter the user already asked for (a queued message) is sent; a message Claude then holds still gets its card. The approval stands for 7dadd8d once both required checks are green on it; I did not run the new contract case myself (it needs a live herdr), CI does.

Release v0.4.2 from `main` at cc9701c. Stop before merge: the maintainer
merges and runs the release.

## What's in it
- Version 0.4.2 in `package.json` and `herdr-plugin.toml`.
- CHANGELOG: `## [Unreleased]` cut into `## [0.4.2] - 2026-10-09`,
compare links updated, the two #598 entries given their PR link. Outside
contributors are credited as GitHub lists them as authors.
- `release-summaries.json`: 0.4.2 patch notes in en/ko/ja/zh (new 5,
improved 5, fixed 4).
- `REMOTE_BUNDLE_VERSION` raised to `"22"`: the remote-PC bundle ships
`server/`, `shared/` and `dist/` (`scripts/build-remote-bundle.ts`), and
all three changed since remote-v21 (#543, #438, #599, #600, #601, #605
and others). A `remote-v22` tag is needed on the merge commit before the
release.

## PRs since v0.4.1
#598, #524, #599, #603, #600, #601, #605, #438, #610, #607, #543

## Whole-release review
Codex astra (gpt-6-astra) over `v0.4.1..cc9701c`, looking for cross-PR
problems: **no release blocker**. One Medium, verified by reading the
code and left as a follow-up: in an OpenCode chat, "Show the whole
output" fetched while a tool is still running can keep the older text if
the tool later rewrites its output, because the output reference carries
no revision. It affects only what is displayed until the row remounts;
the fix needs a new protocol field, so it is out of scope for a release
PR.

## Checks
- `bun run check fast`: green locally (1928 pass, 6 skip, 0 fail;
typecheck, build, generated types).
- `server/release-notes.test.ts` and `scripts/release-notes.test.ts`: 27
pass; `bun scripts/release-notes.ts 0.4.2` renders the notes.
