dt freezes

Is there an existing issue for this?

• I checked and did not find my issue in the already reported ones

Describe the bug

I have set those icons to only show upon hovering:

with current master 5.7.0+318~gcfcb13c7f4-dirty dt freezes when hovering over those icons (regardless which module)

Steps to reproduce

1. set those icons to only show upon hovering
2. Go to darkroom
3. start edit one picture (in my case NEF)
4. hover with mouse over such icon e.g. to create another instance of the same module
5. see the freeze

Expected behavior

darktable should not freeze :-)

dt freezes before -d all -d verbose -d perf (or less of those) even can report anything

• i twas the same with 5.7.0-317 and before I was on 5.7.0-214 and all was fine.
• when removing .config/darktable, the issue dissappears, I assume because those icons then always on

It definitely sounds like the recent gtk4 changes. I didn't even know there was a way to only show them when hovering!

@Arecsu sometimes this thing fails to show up, then you just have to move the mouse around a bit.

Hmmm, was it working fine prior to my gtk4-prep work? or was it always that way? I did spend a huge time solving the exact issue you're saying because it was pretty bad when I sat down to fix the freeze. At least here in macOS it works... fine, for the most part
