📐 Maintainability & Code Quality | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Fix the spec.extraArgs lifecycle text and the denylist sentence.

Lines 588-590 say that extraArgs take effect "on newly-created members (scale-up, replacement) only". This PR also synchronizes the latched value onto existing and dormant EtcdMember specs. A recreated Pod of an existing member therefore receives the new flags. EtcdMemberSpec.ExtraArgs in api/v1alpha2/etcdmember_types.go:125-130 describes this behavior correctly. The cluster-level text conflicts with it, and the generated CRD shows the cluster-level text to kubectl explain users.

Lines 579-581 say "That denylist is what made the original free-form map unsafe". The original map was unsafe because it had no denylist. As written, the sentence states the opposite.

Fix both points in the Go marker comment. Then regenerate charts/etcd-operator/crd-bases/etcd-operator.cozystack.io_etcdclusters.yaml.

Review comment at @api/v1alpha2/etcdcluster_types.go around lines 577 - 590:
Update the marker comment for EtcdClusterSpec extraArgs to state that the
original free-form map was unsafe because it lacked a denylist, and that the
denylist now protects the operator wiring. Revise the lifecycle text to say the
latched value is synchronized onto every member spec and applies when a Pod is
created or recreated, without implying existing Pods are rolled. Regenerate the
corresponding CRD documentation so kubectl explain reflects the updated comment.

The major problem is there is a cache/indexer in the apiserver that helps to accelerate the operation with `field-selector`. if we allow regex filter for `field-selector` and users submit a very generic regex then the cache will be bloated.

&gt; The major problem is there is a cache/indexer in the apiserver that helps to accelerate the operation with field-selector. if we allow regex filter for field-selector and users submit a very generic regex then the cache will be bloated.

The first concern is about the resource cost to the apiserver to run regular expressions across all items in a list. The prediction is that it is possible to write regexes that are extremely expensive. If there is a belief that this cost is not excessively expensive, a benchmark test where it&#39;s easy to demonstrate pathological regexes would provide proof.

For targeting specific use-cases, you could try specifying labels that precisely match what you&#39;re trying to select (user was indicated as one use-case on the sig call).

<title>Common Expression Language in Kubernetes | Kubernetes</title>

<excerpt>citeturn0search2 [wordlim: 200] Crawled: 2 weeks ago; For example: operations that use regular expressions, such as `match` and `find`, are estimated using an approximated cost of `length(regexString)*length(inputString)`. ... All CEL expressions evaluated by Kubernetes are constrained by a runtime cost budget. The runtime cost budget is an estimate of actual CPU utilization computed by incrementing a cost unit counter while interpreting a CEL expression.
CEL&#39;s resource constraint features provide feedback to developers about expression complexity and help protect the API server from excessive resource consumption during evaluation. CEL&#39;s resource constraint features are used to prevent CEL evaluation from consuming excessive API server resources.

A key element of the resource constraint features is a cost unit that CEL defines as a way of tracking CPU utilization. Cost units are independent of system load and hardware. Cost units are also deterministic; for any given CEL expression and input data, evaluation of the expression by the CEL interpreter will always result in the same cost.

Many of CEL&#39;s core operations have fixed costs. The simplest operations, such as comparisons (e.g. `&lt;`) have a cost of 1. Some have a higher fixed cost, for example list literal declarations have a fixed base cost of 40 cost units.

Calls to functions implemented in native code approximate cost based on the time complexity of the operation. For example: operations that use regular expressions, such as `match` and `find`, are estimated using an approximated cost of `length(regexString)*length(inputString)`. </excerpt>

# Common Expression Language

The Common Expression Language (CEL) implements common semantics for expression evaluation, enabling different applications to more easily interoperate.

Key Applications

  * Security policy: organizations have complex infrastructure and need common tooling to reason about the system as a whole
  * Protocols: expressions are a useful data type and require interoperability across programming languages and platforms.

Guiding philosophy:

  1. Keep it small &amp; fast.
     * CEL evaluates in linear time, is mutation free, and not Turing-complete. This limitation is a feature of the language design, which allows the implementation to evaluate orders of magnitude faster than equivalently sandboxed JavaScript.
  2. Make it extensible.
     * CEL is designed to be embedded in applications, and allows for extensibility via its context which allows for functions and data to be provided by the software that embeds it.
  3. Developer-friendly.
     * The language is approachable to developers. </excerpt>

Make extraArgs key validation cost-bounded.

maxProperties: 64 does not bound key length. Kubernetes 1.33 estimates regex cost from input length and regex length. For this 24-character pattern, an unbounded key costs about 1.8 million units per matches call. Evaluating up to 64 keys costs about 115 million units, above the 10 million per-expression limit. The API server can reject the CRD during installation.

Change extraArgs to a bounded-key representation, such as a list with a name field that has maxLength, or lower the map limit to a value that keeps both the rule and its messageExpression below the Kubernetes budget. Do not add maxLength under additionalProperties; that bounds values, not map keys.

around lines 1169 - 1234:
Make extraArgs key validation cost-bounded by replacing the unbounded map-key
representation with a bounded-key structure, such as a list whose name field has
an explicit maxLength, or by reducing maxProperties enough to keep every regex
rule and messageExpression under Kubernetes’ CEL cost budget. Do not add
maxLength under additionalProperties, since that only limits values; preserve
the existing key-format, managed-flag, and typed-option validation behavior.
