Turn the backend-bound components inventory into a proposal with a position: one CAPI infrastructure provider per tenant cluster, a backend as its own package source with control-plane and node-pool applications, a shared library chart extracted from the KubeVirt charts, a written backend contract, and kubernetes-switchcloud as the second backend. Mixed clusters stay with #9. Signed-off-by: IvanHunters <xorokhotnikov@gmail.com>

| Artifact names are derived from source and variant, so addon charts cannot drop `kubevirt` from their names while they are components of the `kubernetes-application` `kubevirt` variant. They move to their own source, `cozystack.kubernetes-addons` with a `default` variant, installed as a `Package` in the bundles that install a Kubernetes backend (dependencies resolve against `Package` status), and every backend source and `computeplane-application` depend on it. | ||
|
|
||
| Switching is tied to the platform upgrade, not to each cluster: addon HelmReleases are rendered by the cluster's own release, whose chart comes with the bundle, so every non-suspended cluster moves to the new artifact names when the platform is upgraded. The `kubevirt` variant keeps publishing the old addon artifacts for one release, for suspended releases and for out-of-tree charts that reference them (`kubernetes-switchcloud` does). |

The proposal states that old addon artifacts remain available for suspended releases, but it limits that retention to one platform release. It does not define retention for clusters suspended longer than that period or a migration when such a cluster resumes. Specify one of these behaviors so resumed clusters do not retain references to unavailable addon charts.

| - Cloud credentials live in the tenant namespace, are referenced rather than embedded in the application spec, and are consumed on the management side only. | ||
| - External backends expose trustd and konnectivity through an SNI router, a new externally reachable endpoint per cluster. Workers still authenticate as today: with the Talos machine token to trustd and with the konnectivity agent token. | ||
| - A backend package runs management-side controllers. From a marketplace tap it goes through the existing privileged confirmation only if its author marks those components `install.privileged`; the contract should require that. |

Enforce privileged confirmation independently of package metadata.
The marketplace allows external authors to publish package components. The install-time prompt is conditional on install.privileged: true, which an author can omit. Define a platform-enforced policy that requires confirmation for management-side controllers regardless of package metadata. Keep the marker for display and validation, but do not use it as the sole gate.

Not LGTM as of 7f238844.
The CAPI and Kamaji part is correct, I checked it against the sources, and the inventory is good work. My concerns are about the shape.
The kind question is left in Open questions (a kind per backend, or one Kubernetes kind with a selector), but this is the part we can't change later. The library, the contract and how addons are delivered are internal and can be reworked, new kinds stay with us forever. So I think it should be decided in this document, with the cost of each option written down: a selector needs cozystack-api to map one kind to several charts, a kind per backend gives every backend its own API forever.
I'd suggest to narrow this proposal to the library chart, the backend contract and the kind decision.
For what runs inside the tenant cluster (§4) I'd prefer a different direction, and I think it deserves a separate proposal. Instead of pushing HelmReleases from the management cluster through the admin kubeconfig, run cozystack-operator inside the tenant cluster (it can start without CNI and kube-proxy) and give tenant clusters their own bundle:
- System components (CNI, CSI, CCM, kube-proxy, CoreDNS) come from
packages/systemas packages. The backend-specific set is a variant that follows the type of the node groups: kubevirt-csi and kccm for KubeVirt, openstack-cloud-controller-manager and Cinder CSI for OpenStack, and so on. Every tenant cluster is a platform of its own here, so the variant is chosen per cluster, and the "variant is platform-wide" problem and the artifact rename both go away. - Addons follow the contract from the developer guide: the chart lives in
system/, and a top-level chart creates HelmReleases from it, only now inside the tenant cluster. Ingress controllers (ingress-nginx, Traefik) are not cluster addons at all, they come through this cozystack-in-cozystack catalog like any other app.
This also means no new backend or addon fields in the spec of the existing applications. Where the CCM and the CSI controller run depends on whose credentials they hold. With the tenant's own cloud account they can live in the tenant cluster like upstream expects, with credentials owned by the platform they stay on the management side, like the CAPI provider. Only one CCM can own the nodes, so node groups of different types in one cluster are a mixed cluster and stay with #9. It also fits #106 quite well, a tenant cluster becomes a platform without catalogs.
Who needs single-backend clusters as a platform feature? The use cases in #9 (multi-cloud, BYO clouds) are mixed clusters, and they stay with #9. Also, wouldn't it be enough for kubernetes-switchcloud to keep it as a separate chart and just point its six addons to a neutral source? That fixes the only thing which really breaks there (…-kubevirt-… artifact names) without a new API.
Things to fix, checked against cozystack ff52aeb44, kubernetes-switchcloud v0.11.9 and the upstream versions from the doc:
- "Backend-neutral today" is not quite true.
WorkloadMonitorinkubernetes-nodescounts pods withcluster.x-k8s.io/*labels, so virt-launcher pods (nodegroup.yaml:610-622), and on any other backend the count is always zero. The delete hook removes CDIdatavolumes(delete.yaml:282-289).pre-delete-unpin.yamland template retention innodegroup.yamlhardcodekubevirtmachinetemplates, and pools look upinstancetype.kubevirt.io. - Missing in the inventory: the management-side KubeVirt CSI controller and its RBAC on DataVolumes and VMIs (
csi/deploy.yaml,csi/infra-cluster-service-account.yaml),cloud-config.yaml, pool fieldsstorageClass, diskSize, gpus, logSerialConsole,osImage, and the MHC. kubernetes-nodes/tests/render_snapshot_test.yamlcovers onlynodegroup.yamlobjects, not the reconcile Job. Since byte-identical output is the whole upgrade story for KubeVirt clusters, the snapshot should cover the Job too.
nits:
- switchcloud sources already have
variants, it's not an older format. The difference is that its platform chart installs components as plain HelmReleases, and the app variant has nodependsOn,librariesor-rd. Also it ships no cluster-autoscaler at all, not only no RBAC. - the KubeVirt CSI node plugin exits only when
providerIDis empty. A node withproviderIDset by a native CCM starts with an invalid node ID instead. - the cap in
rest.goalso counts the-md0suffix, andkubernetes-nodes-rdhardcodesprefix: kubernetes-nodes-. - variant
dependsOngates only components withinstall(the-rd), so "keeps the package from reconciling" is a bit wider than it is. computeplane-application.yamlsays a non-KubeVirt substrate "would arrive as a sibling variant", which contradicts "Why not a variant".- please squash the two commits, the first one adds the file under another directory.
Both coderabbit comments (suspended clusters older than one release, and install.privileged being set by the package author) are valid, +1 to them.

Hi! We removed Sorry for the extra work, I wanted to mention this now so it doesn't come up late in review. |
Proposes per-cluster infrastructure backends for tenant Kubernetes clusters, supplementing #9 (hybrid Kubernetes clusters).
The position: a tenant cluster uses exactly one CAPI infrastructure provider, chosen at creation. A backend is its own package source with a control-plane application and a node-pool application, built on a shared library chart extracted from today's
kubernetesandkubernetes-nodescharts, and it covers a written contract derived from an inventory of what is KubeVirt-bound today. KubeVirt stays the default backend and existing clusters render the same objects.aenix-org/kubernetes-switchcloud, which already runs OpenStack workers against a Kamaji control plane as a separate chart, is the model for the second backend. Mixed clusters stay with #9; the one point where this differs from the #9 sketches (CAPI providers instead of bypassing CAPI, for single-backend clusters) is called out in the document.Facts are pinned to cozystack
ff52aeb44and the upstream revisions listed in the document. Before review
decisions/directory, or says below why none is needed. Not applicable: this adds a new proposal and does not revise a merged one.
