feat(classifier): Gmail AI Semantic Classifier with Ontological Knowledge Graph & Drive Ingestion - #649
Introduces the production Gemini AI Semantic Email Classifier and automated Google Drive attachment persistence module for google-app-scripts, resolving historical classification drift and character flattening issues.
Key Capabilities
Ontological Knowledge Graph & Triage Matrix:
Classifies emails across the 7-Canonical Domain taxonomy (01_Household through 07_Community_NonProfit).
Replaces brittle keyword heuristics with positive invariants, party attribution, and orthogonal triage rules.
Shields personal communications (family, personal, banking, career) in Primary Inbox while routing non-actionable broadcasts, digests, and telemetry to secondary category tabs (Updates, Promotions, Social) with auto-archive.
Durable Queueing & Circuit Breaking:
Resilient retry queueing with AI/Needs-Retry label tracking and automated sweep triggers.
Dynamic Gemini fallback cascade (gemini-2.5-flash, gemini-flash-latest, gemini-2.5-flash-lite, gemini-2.5-pro) with circuit breakers protecting GAS execution quotas.
Automatic normalization of deprecated models (gemini-1.5*, gemini-2.0* to gemini-2.5-flash).
Google Drive Attachment Ingestion & Native Auto-Unzip:
Persists eligible attachments along canonical 2-level taxonomy folders (Domain/Subfolder) with MD5 deduplication and safe conflict renaming.
Native Auto-Unzip: Detects .zip archives, preserves the original archive file, and unpacks eligible contents into a dedicated subfolder (<targetFolder>/<zipStem>/) with OS artifact stripping (__MACOSX, .DS_Store, Thumbs.db).
Immediately tags files in Drive with [AI_INDEXED] structured metadata headers.
…non-canonical
- Fall back primaryTag to DEFAULT_DOMAIN_SUBLABEL_MAP to avoid raw root domain tags
- Unconditionally remove core domain labels in cleanConflictingLabels
- Add non-canonical prompt rules for surveys, campaigns, and equipment promos
- Support messageListVisibility: 'hide' in ensureGmailLabel when API is present
- Enrich sparse email snippets with attachment filenames for Gemini context
- Add unit tests verifying prompt rules, cleansing, mappings, and attachments
The pull request adds repository PII checks to local and CI workflows. It updates classifier configuration, taxonomy and deployment documentation, and GitHub note synchronization. It also adds audit, attachment, GitHub sync, and performance test coverage.
Changes: PII Scanning
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Scanner rules and execution scripts/check-no-pii.js, .gitignore
Adds built-in and custom PII rules, path filters, staged and repository scans, whitelist handling, and violation reporting. Ignores the custom rules file.
Local and CI check wiring package.json, .husky/pre-commit, .github/workflows/ci.yml
Adds the scanner to package checks, pre-commit, and CI. Renames the workflow to CI Pipeline.
Classifier Configuration and GitHub Sync
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Classifier configuration and taxonomy src/gmail-ai-classifier/config.gs, src/gmail-ai-classifier/.clasp.json, src/gmail-ai-classifier/README.md, src/gmail-ai-classifier/TAXONOMY_PLAN.md, docs/proposals/proposal-001-ai-gemini-semantic-classifier.md
Updates classifier defaults and settings, renames the family health domain, and adds deployment, setup, and taxonomy documentation.
Updates GitHub repository resolution, requests, note handling, and Unicode safeguards. Removes the prior JavaScript sync module, two-way rules synchronization, and its tests. Adds GitHub sync tests and updates digest mocks.
Audit, attachment, and performance test coverage src/gmail-ai-classifier/tests/audit.test.js, src/gmail-ai-classifier/tests/drive-attachments.test.js, src/gmail-ai-classifier/tests/performance-scalability.test.js
Adds audit and Drive attachment test cases. Updates performance benchmarks to exercise production helpers and adds a classification-cache benchmark.
The PII check can be bypassed by a marker string, and its own rules still contain the personal identifiers it exists to keep out of the repository. Fix both before merging. The Gmail note commit path no longer rejects Drive links.

CodeQL reported 108 new high-severity alerts, all "Incomplete URL substring sanitization" (js/incomplete-url-substring-sanitization) in src/gmail-ai-classifier/src/index.js (e.g. lines 1149-1153, 1294-1301, 1361-1365, 1438-1440, 1469-1476, 1500-1503). The code checks domains like amazon.com or bcsk12.org with substring matching (includes/indexOf), so a host such as evil-amazon.com.attacker.net would also match.
Suggested fix: Parse the sender/URL host and compare it exactly or by suffix (host === d || host.endsWith("." + d)) in a shared helper, and use it in place of the substring checks in index.js.
Thanks for the detailed PR description and the extensive test suite. I reviewed the classifier core (code.gs / src/index.js), Drive attachment ingestion, GitHub sync, config, the new No-PII gate, and test setup. Findings are posted as line comments; the headlines:
High:classifyWithGemini returns/caches Gemini output with no validation (and its schema doesn't match validateClassification); code.gs ↔ src/index.js parity claimed in the PR doesn't hold and only the Node copy is tested.
Medium: API key in URL query strings; circuit breaker counts one 429 burst as ~7 failures; taxonomy folders created at Drive root; zip extraction silently truncates at 25 entries; PII-checker whitelist can exempt real PII line-wide; gitHubSync.gs calls config at load time.
Low: deprecated token auth + unencoded GitHub path; unvalidated numeric config; duplicate keys in the test Utilities mock; PII scanner self-exemption by exact path.
No merge-blocking verdict from me (Comment, not Request changes) — but I'd like the two High items addressed or explicitly accepted before this becomes the production ingestion path, since it writes to Drive/GitHub and archives/trashes mail automatically.
80-89: Trivial · Maintainability & Code Quality · Heavy lift
Benchmarks do not call production code.
The first benchmark maps 100 literal objects into a fixed classification. It never calls processThreadBatch or any classifier function. The second benchmark times Map.get and JSON.parse on a test-local mockCache. It never calls the classifier's cache code.
Both tests pass for any production implementation. A slow or broken classification path or cache path cannot fail them. The change also removes the previous processThreadBatch coverage, which had assertions on each classified thread result.
Call the real exports in the timed section. For example, use processThreadBatch with the mocked services, or the real cache read/write helpers. Keep the assertions on the returned results. If no suitable export exists, delete these tests. They give a false signal of performance coverage.

Charset, newBlob, base64Encode, and base64Decode appear twice in the same object literal. The later definitions at Lines 96-148 silently override the earlier ones at Lines 44-95. The earlier versions are dead code. They also differ in ASCII handling: the earlier versions return U+FFFD, and the later versions use Buffer.toString('ascii'). A reader can edit the wrong copy and see no effect.
Edit the original definitions in place and delete the second copies. If a duplicate-key lint rule is enabled for this file, it will also flag the current form.

CodeQL reported 121 new high-severity alerts, mostly "Incomplete URL substring sanitization" in src/gmail-ai-classifier/src/index.js (e.g. lines 1149-1155, 1294-1301, 1384-1434, 1507-1509, 1584-1590). The code checks domains such as bcsk12.org, amazon.com and openai.com with substring matching (likely includes), so a host like evil-amazon.com.attacker.net would also match.
Suggested fix: Replace the substring checks with an exact-host or dot-anchored suffix match on the parsed hostname, for example host === d || host.endsWith("." + d), using a shared helper for all the domain lists in index.js.
The quality gate failed because duplication on new code is 6.5%, above the required 3% maximum. The PR adds a large new file, scripts/check-no-pii.js (~320 lines), and it most likely has repeated rule-definition or scanning blocks. The tests and build are not what failed.
Suggested fix: Open the "Duplications" view for PR 649 on SonarCloud and refactor the repeated blocks in scripts/check-no-pii.js, for example with a shared helper or a data-driven rule list, until new-code duplication is at or below 3%.
Skip the retry loop when the failure is deterministic.
executeGitHubCommit returns false for permanent failures. Examples are unresolved GITHUB_REPO_OWNER or GITHUB_REPO_NAME, and a Rule 6 guard throw that the catch block converts to false. appendMarkdownEntryToGitHubRepo treats every false as retryable. Each of these failures therefore runs three attempts with sleepFn(1000 * attempt) between them. That adds seconds of blocking Utilities.sleep per email to the Apps Script execution budget, and no attempt can succeed.
Resolve the repository target once before the loop and return early if it is missing.
vartarget=resolveGitHubRepoTarget_(services)if(!target.repoOwner||!target.repoName){console.warn('[gitHubSync] GITHUB_REPO_OWNER or GITHUB_REPO_NAME not configured. Skipping GitHub commit.')returnfalse}
Place this block after the githubToken check and before var maxRetries = 3. Keep the existing check in executeGitHubCommit for direct callers. Apply the same change to src/index.js to keep parity.
