Problem

SonarCloud: GitHub Actions / dependency hardening

From the issue: 2 open SonarCloud finding(s) in combsmith/TalkTerm, worst severity MAJOR. Generated by the org SonarCloud Audit.

Risk

Medium — changes GitHub Actions workflow behavior, which is exercised only post-merge; verify via the affected workflow runs.

Test plan

No test files were added or updated. Verification: bash scripts/dev-lead-lint.sh (shellcheck --severity=warning) ran pre-commit; the existing CI (bats + lint) guards the change.

Rollback

Revert this PR. No non-revertible side effects (no tags, migrations, or external state).

Monitoring

Watch the affected workflow run(s) in the Actions tab and this PR's Lint check for regressions.

Closes #552

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Security

    • CI download requests now require HTTPS-only connections, helping prevent insecure transport during tool and checksum downloads.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved validation detects download commands that lack the required HTTPS restriction, including chained commands.
  • Tests

    • Expanded CI workflow checks and test coverage to verify both compliant and non-compliant download configurations. Workflows without download commands continue to pass validation.

- Line 398: Update the Check 10 validation around the --proto grep to evaluate
the last --proto option on each command rather than accepting any earlier
HTTPS-only option. Reject commands unless their effective final protocol value
permits only HTTPS, while preserving acceptance of valid --proto '=https' forms.
- Around line 397-398: Update the curl protocol validation in the Check 10 logic
to ignore shell comments, treating # as a comment marker only when it begins an
unquoted word, and inspect executable tokens and arguments rather than the full
line. Detect curl as an exact executable token so commented --proto '=https'
text cannot satisfy the check, while preserving validation of actual curl
arguments.

The PR's changes are validated: all 10 workflow regression guards pass, including Check 10 which confirms every curl download is restricted to HTTPS (--proto '=https'). The test suite covers both positive cases (correct --proto usage) and negative cases (missing proto, chained commands, comments). No specific gaps identified beyond what the tests already validate.

Agent reasoning
Issues addressed: 1
- Vague "Merge Risk: Moderate" with unspecified gaps: All workflow checks pass; the code correctly implements `--proto '=https'` on both gitleaks and yq downloads; the test suite covers 33 cases including chained commands and protocol restrictions. [issue comment: disposition=answered]
Files changed: None (all checks validated, no code changes needed)
Skipped (informational): 0
The CodeRabbit comment was rate-limited and provides only a vague warning without identifying specific gaps. All automated validation confirms the workflow security improvements are correct:
- Check 10 passes: validates `--proto '=https'` on every curl command
- Test suite passes: 33 cases covering negative cases (missing proto, chained commands, comments)
- Workflow validation passes: all 10 regression guards
- CI checks pass: all required status checks green

Automated review — APPROVED ✓

Risk: MEDIUM
Reviewed commit: 9e5042ff0ae04d8af5fd421aa2ec5c077febe136
Review mode: triage-approved (single reviewer)

Summary

Fixes both SonarCloud githubactions:S6506 findings in .github/workflows/ci.yml by adding --proto '=https' to the two gitleaks curl downloads, and adds regression guard Check 10 in scripts/test-ci-workflow.sh, with fixtures and test cases 29-33. The PR hardens CI and adds no new attack surface. Rated MEDIUM, not LOW, because Check 10 adds a non-trivial quote-aware shell tokenizer.

Linked issue analysis

Closes #552 (SonarCloud: GitHub Actions / dependency hardening, 2x S6506 in ci.yml). Both flagged curl invocations (ci.yml lines 81 and 84, gitleaks binary and checksums) now pass --proto '=https'. The yq install curls (lines 106 and 109) already had it. The fix is real, with no NOSONAR, and CI behavior is unchanged. The issue closes itself when the finding count reaches zero, so a closing reference fits here.

Findings

No blocking findings.

  • Verified at head 9e5042f: scripts/test-ci-workflow.sh passes against the real ci.yml (Check 10: PASS). scripts/test-ci-workflow.test.sh passes all cases, including the new comment-only, last-wins, last-https, equals-form and hash-in-url cases. shellcheck --severity=warning is clean on both scripts.
  • CodeRabbit raised two threads: a # --proto in a comment satisfied the check, and only the first --proto was read when curl uses the last one. Commit 9e5042f fixes both with the tokenizer and last-value logic, both threads are resolved, and the new regression cases cover them.
  • Non-blocking: judge_curl_command matches only the bare token curl. A path-qualified call such as /usr/bin/curl would not be checked. No such call exists today, so this could be a follow-up hardening item.
  • No secrets handled. The only workflow change adds a flag to an existing run: step.

CI status

All required checks green: Workflow regression guards, CodeQL (actions, python), SonarCloud (Quality Gate passed, 0 new issues), gitleaks, AgentShield, dependency-audit and CodeRabbit. The dev-lead / dispatch|ci-relay|resume entries are CANCELLED automation-dispatch runs, not CI gates. The non-applicable dependency-audit ecosystems were SKIPPED.
