Replacement: #219

Superseded — not landed. This stat-fingerprint gate could cache a pre-commit WAL snapshot: SQLite writes frames before the wal-index header publishes in -shm, so unchanged file metadata can hide a commit, and the cache could also survive an enclosing transaction rollback. The replacement uses the engine's PRAGMA data_version on Linux and keeps the full read on Windows. The branch is kept until the replacement merges.

Lifecycle.reconcile now stats the source database and its -wal (size, mtime, ctime and inode) before reading. When the fingerprint and the agent thread set match the last successful read, it skips the source read and returns the saved result. Anything else — a changed file, a missing database, a permission error, a replaced inode, a stat exception or a new thread binding — does the full read exactly as today.

No handle is held and nothing depends on T3 Code: any SQLite writer changes at least one of the two files' metadata on commit. The ready/unavailable answers, invalid and unverified row handling, and delivery admission are unchanged; only an unchanged read is skipped.

Evidence

  • Tests: an unchanged source skips the read (an exclusive lock on the source would block a read); a changed source, a WAL change and a replaced inode are read again; a missing database and a permission error return unavailable. Focused file 75 pass; bun run check pass; full suite 1,461 pass / 0 fail / 7 skip.
  • Copy server, 20 clients renewing a 3 s wait with a reconcile every 2 s, 5 x 30 s windows on the same synthetic source: current idle 0.1378 cores -> gated idle 0.0595; gated at 1 commit/s 0.0600 cores (180 commits), 56% less.
  • The live server was not restarted or attached to.

Limits

  • The fingerprint is file metadata. A writer that bypasses SQLite, or a filesystem that does not update metadata on a write, could be missed; normal SQLite writers change the WAL or the main file on every commit.
  • The fingerprint is read before the source, so a commit during a read is seen on the next reconcile, the same window as today's point-in-time read.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Performance
    • Lifecycle checks now skip rereading the source when the database, its write-ahead log, and the relevant thread set are unchanged, reducing CPU use while the system is idle.
  • Reliability
    • Changes to the source database or its write-ahead log are still detected and read. Missing or inaccessible sources continue to be reported as unavailable.

Lifecycle.reconcile stats the source database and its -wal (size, mtime, ctime and inode) before reading. When the fingerprint and the agent thread set match the last successful read, it skips the source and returns the saved result. Any change, a missing or unreadable file, a replaced inode, a stat error or a new binding does the full read exactly as before.

On the copy-server harness, idle drops from 0.1378 to 0.0595 cores and 1 commit/s from 0.1378 to 0.0600.

Walkthrough

Lifecycle reconciliation now checks the source database and WAL fingerprint and thread set before reading a source snapshot. Tests cover unchanged sources, updates, missing or inaccessible sources, and file replacement.

Changes: Lifecycle source-read shortcut

Layer / File(s) Summary
Fingerprint-based reconciliation
src/lifecycle.ts, test/lifecycle.test.ts, CHANGELOG.md
Lifecycle caches database and WAL fingerprints and the sorted thread set after successful reconciliation. When both match the cached values, reconciliation returns ready with changed: 0 without reading a snapshot. Tests cover source updates, WAL changes, unavailable sources, and file replacement. The changelog records the shortcut.

After a rejected send, the optimization can leave lifecycle state stale, so later sends may be admitted to recipients whose sessions have already settled. This bypasses delivery admission, which the PR states is unchanged. Fix the cache invalidation or publication timing before merging.

Explanation

The pull request changes only CHANGELOG.md, src/lifecycle.ts, and test/lifecycle.test.ts. The added lines contain no lint, type-check, or formatter suppression directives, and no ignore configuration entries changed.

Full details: Interface Changes Documented

Explanation

PASS: The pull request changes only CHANGELOG.md, src/lifecycle.ts, and test/lifecycle.test.ts. The code changes add internal lifecycle fingerprinting and tests; they do not add, remove, or rename an MCP tool or argument, a swarmail command or flag, or an environment variable. CHANGELOG.md also contains the required ## Unreleased entry.

Invalidate the lifecycle cache when the outer transaction rolls back.

send_message reconciles the source inside its transaction. If admission then rejects a settled recipient, the transaction rolls back the lifecycle rows and cursor, but the in-memory fingerprint remains updated. The next reconciliation can return ready from the unchanged-source cache-hit path without restoring the settled state. The recipient can then be admitted.

Invalidate both cached values on outer rollback, or defer cache publication until the transaction that owns the lifecycle writes commits. Add a regression test for a rejected send followed by reconciliation.
