Run on pyproject.toml or ruff.toml change

Currently ruff runs on py or pyi file change.

But shouldn't it also run when pyproject.toml or ruff.toml is changed?

The problem is that pre-commit will only run on the file changed. There is not a way to check for a config change and then run ruff on all files (not without making this whole system wildly more complicated.) You can manually have it ran on all-files when you make changes. Otherwise, you would need always_run. But that would be excessive most of the time.

When you make a change to your config, you can run:

> pre-commit run ruff --all-files # `ruff` is the `id` of the pre-commit hook you are referencing

> pre-commit run ruff-format --all-files
ruff-format..............................................................Passed

We do lint the pyproject.toml itself though, so we could add toml to the list of supported files. We did this in the past and then had to revert it: #44 (comment). But I believe newer versions of Ruff don't suffer from the same problem, so we could re-add.

What if ruff cli runs on the whole project if the arguments include pyproject.toml or ruff.toml

That could work. You should open an issue in ruff. It would solve this issue. But I have no idea if it would be approved.

Couldn't there simply be two additional hook definitions, e.g. ruff-check-everything and ruff-format-everything, which set pass_filenames: false and match on files: (pyproject|ruff)\.toml$ (with types: [file])?

For a long time I have had types_or: [python, pyi, jupyter, toml] in my .pre-commit.yaml file to ensure that pyproject.toml was also included in pre-commit (specifically the RUF200 rule). Suddenly I have run into an issue where this caused ruff to lint and reject uv.lcok The issue only happens with pre-commit and not with prek. Is there a better way to ensure that ruff lints pyproject.toml as part of the precommit. For now I have worked around the issue by explicitly excluding uv.lock with exclude: "uv.lock"

I solved it with:

This does not rerun ruff on all files when pyproject.toml is modified; I use pre-commit --all-files in CI for that. But this does correctly run ruff on pyproject.toml without also running on uv.lock.
