This PR serves to improve the nix flake and add the vscode extension as a package by removing unnecessary dependencies and has improvements regarding the usage of the nix language more generally.

  • Run a formatter (alejandra) on the nix code
  • Remove rust-overlay dependency since goboscript can be built using stable rust again
  • Fix usage of pkgs.callPackage (you don't need to inherit (pkgs) - that's the whole point of pkgs.callPackage)
  • Remove flake-utils dependency (I would prefer flake-parts, but I think this flake can do without either). Additionally, support aarch64-linux which is a common target for system.
  • Add the vscode extension as a package (Would close chore: package vscode extension for nix #389)
  • Check that it works using my own system configuration
  • Add/update corresponding documentation

pkgs.callPackage automatically fills the arguments to default.nix from the nixpkgs package set. But rust still needs to be overridden. However, since goboscript builds on stable rust again, it may be possible to remove the rust-overlay dependency and use rust directly from nixpkgs
this required an update of nixpkgs
However this means that legacyPackages is no longer exported among any other implicit flake-utils behavior

Also refactored default.nix to return an attribute set, so the vscode
extension can be added in that same file.
This just fetches the built extension from the marketplace

closes aspizu#389

To install the goboscript *compiler*, you can add `goboscript.packages.${pkgs.stdenv.hostPlatform.system}.goboscript` to your system packages list.
For nix flakes, add the input `goboscript` and add it to `environment.systemPackages` in your flake like so:

[This repository](https://codeberg.org/rtk/dotfiles) is an example usage of the goboscript flake.

You may want to remove the link to my dotfiles repo. I just added since it is relatively common for nix projects to have reference configs. In this case, the use of the goboscript nix stuff is rather simple so perhaps it is unnecessary.

📝 Walkthrough

The Nix package expression exposes the goboscript compiler and a VS Code extension. The flake provides package and development-shell outputs for four systems. Installation documentation covers the extension and compiler.

Changes: Nix packaging

Layer / File(s) Summary
Compiler and extension package outputs
default.nix
The package expression exposes default and goboscript aliases for the compiler, plus a goboscript-vscode package built from Marketplace version 1.0.3.
Flake outputs and installation instructions
flake.nix, docs/editor-integration/vscode.md, docs/install.md
The flake generates package and development-shell outputs for four Linux and Darwin systems. The documentation describes installing the extension and compiler with Nix, using the demo development shell, and updates the sample nixpkgs reference to 26.05.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to d6b2f

The compiler and extension outputs match the documented install paths, and the development shell inherits the compiler’s build inputs. No actionable merge-blocking issue was found; routine Nix evaluation remains to be confirmed in a Nix-enabled environment.

Systems and components

  • observed — docs (service) was modified; 2 changed files map to changed impact.
  • observed — default.nix (service) was modified; 1 changed file maps to changed impact.
  • observed — flake.nix (service) was modified; 1 changed file maps to changed impact.

Before / after behavior

  • observed — Modified behavior in default.nix: The expression changes from returning one Rust package derivation to returning an attribute set with default and goboscript pointing to the package and goboscript-vscode built from the Marketplace reference. The package removes rust from nativeBuildInputs; its version, source, lockfile, other build inputs, and metadata remain specified.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/editor-integration/vscode.md: Added Nix installation instructions that use the flake’s system-specific goboscript-vscode package in the default VS Code profile’s extensions list.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/install.md: Adds a link to the Nix-based VSCode extension installation instructions.
  • observed — Modified behavior in docs/install.md: Replaces instructions for a general-purpose devShell, including its install, exit, and garbage-collection behavior, with a command for accessing the demo devShell.

Explanation

Issue #389 requires the VS Code extension as a Nix flake package. default.nix defines goboscript-vscode with vscode-utils.buildVscodeMarketplaceExtension. flake.nix exports the complete package set for all listed systems, including goboscript-vscode. The VS Code documentation shows how to consume the package.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes stay within the pull request scope. The flake removes rust-overlay and flake-utils, updates package arguments, adds system support, separates development shells, packages the VS Code extension, and updates related installation documentation. The lock-file update supports the input changes.
