**This SDK targets Appwrite server version 2.5.x as shipped on Appwrite Cloud.** Self-hosted releases can lag behind Cloud — if you run an older self-hosted build, use a matching older SDK from [previous releases](https://github.com/appwrite/sdk-for-python/releases) when APIs differ.

## Installation

To install via [PyPI](https://pypi.org/):
Requires Python 3.9 or later. Install the [`appwrite`](https://pypi.org/project/appwrite/) package from PyPI:

```bash
pip install appwrite
```

Or with `uv`:
Or with [uv](https://docs.astral.sh/uv/):

```bash
uv add appwrite
```

## Getting started

## Getting Started
### Initialize the client

### Init your SDK
Initialize your SDK with your Appwrite server API endpoint and project ID which can be found on your project settings page and your new API secret Key from project's API keys section.
Create a client with your Appwrite endpoint, project ID and an [API key](https://appwrite.io/docs/partners/project/api-keys). Find the endpoint and project ID in your project's **Settings** page, and create an API key with only the scopes you need under **API keys** in the project sidebar.

```python
from appwrite.client import Client
from appwrite.services.users import Users
client = Client()
(client
.set_endpoint('https://[HOSTNAME_OR_IP]/v1') # Your API Endpoint
.set_project('5df5acd0d48c2') # Your project ID
.set_key('919c2d18fb5d4...a2ae413da83346ad2') # Your secret API key
.set_self_signed() # Use only on dev mode with a self-signed SSL cert
)
client.set_endpoint('https://<REGION>.cloud.appwrite.io/v1')
client.set_project('<PROJECT_ID>')
client.set_key('<API_KEY>')
```

### Make Your First Request
Once your SDK object is set, create any of the Appwrite service objects and choose any request to send. Full documentation for any service method you would like to use can be found in your SDK documentation or in the [API References](https://appwrite.io/docs) section.
API keys grant server-level access to your project. Keep them out of client-side code and version control.

All service methods return typed Pydantic models, so you can access response fields as attributes:
### Make a request

```python
users = Users(client)
Create a service object with the client and call any of its methods. Every method returns a typed Pydantic model, so response fields are available as attributes.
user = users.create(ID.unique(), email = "email@example.com", phone = "+123456789", password = "password", name = "Walter O'Brien")
print(user.name) # "Walter O'Brien"
print(user.email) # "email@example.com"
print(user.id) # The generated user ID
```

### Full Example
```python
from appwrite.client import Client
from appwrite.services.users import Users
from appwrite.id import ID
client = Client()
(client
.set_endpoint('https://[HOSTNAME_OR_IP]/v1') # Your API Endpoint
.set_project('5df5acd0d48c2') # Your project ID
.set_key('919c2d18fb5d4...a2ae413da83346ad2') # Your secret API key
.set_self_signed() # Use only on dev mode with a self-signed SSL cert
)
from appwrite.services.users import Users
users = Users(client)
user = users.create(ID.unique(), email = "email@example.com", phone = "+123456789", password = "password", name = "Walter O'Brien")
user = users.create(
user_id=ID.unique(),
email='email@example.com',
password='password',
name="Walter O'Brien",
)
print(user.name) # Access fields as attributes
print(user.to_dict()) # Convert to dictionary if needed
print(user.id)
print(user.name)
print(user.to_dict())
```

### Type Safety with Models
See the [API reference](https://appwrite.io/docs/references/cloud/server-python/users) for every service and method.

### Work with rows

The Appwrite Python SDK provides type safety when working with database rows through generic methods. Methods like `get_row`, `list_rows`, and others accept a `model_type` parameter that allows you to specify your custom Pydantic model for full type safety.
Use `TablesDB` to read and write rows. Pass a Pydantic model as `model_type` to get typed row data back; without it, `row.data` is a `dict`.

```python
from pydantic import BaseModel
from datetime import datetime
from typing import Optional
from appwrite.client import Client
from pydantic import BaseModel
from appwrite.id import ID
from appwrite.query import Query
from appwrite.services.tables_db import TablesDB
# Define your custom model matching your table schema
class Post(BaseModel):
postId: int
authorId: int
title: str
content: str
createdAt: datetime
updatedAt: datetime
isPublished: bool
published: bool
excerpt: Optional[str] = None
client = Client()
# ... configure your client ...
tables_db = TablesDB(client)
# Fetch a single row with type safety
row = tables_db.get_row(
database_id="your-database-id",
table_id="your-table-id",
row_id="your-row-id",
model_type=Post # Pass your custom model type
row = tables_db.create_row(
database_id='<DATABASE_ID>',
table_id='<TABLE_ID>',
row_id=ID.unique(),
data={'title': 'Hello, world', 'published': True},
model_type=Post,
)
print(row.data.title) # Fully typed - IDE autocomplete works
print(row.data.postId) # int type, not Any
print(row.data.createdAt) # datetime type
print(row.id)
print(row.data.title)
# Fetch multiple rows with type safety
result = tables_db.list_rows(
database_id="your-database-id",
table_id="your-table-id",
model_type=Post
database_id='<DATABASE_ID>',
table_id='<TABLE_ID>',
queries=[Query.equal('published', True), Query.limit(25)],
model_type=Post,
)
for row in result.rows:
print(f"{row.data.title} by {row.data.authorId}")
print(row.data.title)
```

### Error Handling
The Appwrite Python SDK raises `AppwriteException` object with `message`, `code` and `response` properties. You can handle any errors by catching `AppwriteException` and present the `message` to the user or handle it yourself based on the provided error information. Below is an example.
### Handle errors

Failed requests raise `AppwriteException`, which carries `message`, `code`, `type` and `response`.

```python
users = Users(client)
from appwrite.exception import AppwriteException
try:
user = users.create(ID.unique(), email = "email@example.com", phone = "+123456789", password = "password", name = "Walter O'Brien")
print(user.name)
except AppwriteException as e:
print(e.message)
user = users.get(user_id='<USER_ID>')
except AppwriteException as error:
print(error.code, error.type, error.message)
```

### Self-hosted Appwrite

Point the client at your own instance instead of Appwrite Cloud. Call `set_self_signed()` only in development, when the server uses a self-signed TLS certificate.

```python
client.set_endpoint('https://appwrite.example.com/v1')
client.set_self_signed()
```
