What's the purpose of this PR

okhttp's MockWebServer, which ApolloTestingServer starts for tests, logs through java.util.logging directly. Its output therefore bypassed slf4j/logback in test runs even when jul-to-slf4j was already on the classpath, so mock server logs were missing from the rest of the test log output.

Brief changelog

  • Add an opt-in JUL→SLF4J bridge for MockWebServer logs (ApolloTestingServer#acquireJulBridge() / releaseJulBridge()), with jul-to-slf4j as an optional dependency of apollo-mockserver.
  • The bridge only reconfigures the okhttp3.mockwebserver.MockWebServer logger and never the JUL root logger, so unrelated JUL handlers keep receiving records.
  • The bridge is reference-counted, so concurrently running mock servers don't remove it from under each other. A failed install or release leaves the count and the JUL logger consistent, so both can be retried instead of poisoning later installations.
  • start()/close() and the default logging behaviour are unchanged: without jul-to-slf4j on the classpath, or with the slf4j-jdk14 binding (bridging it would create a JUL↔SLF4J loop), acquiring the bridge only logs a warning and does nothing.

Usage

The bridge is opt-in and needs jul-to-slf4j on the test classpath:

<dependency>
  <groupId>org.slf4j</groupId>
  <artifactId>jul-to-slf4j</artifactId>
  <version>1.7.21</version>
  <scope>test</scope>
</dependency>

Acquire the bridge around the mock server's lifetime and always pair it with a release:

ApolloTestingServer server = new ApolloTestingServer();
server.start();
server.acquireJulBridge();
try {
  // ...
} finally {
  server.releaseJulBridge();
  server.close();
}

How this was tested

  • mvn -B -pl apollo-mockserver -am test on JDK 8 and JDK 17: 21 tests, no failures. The two java.util.logging permission tests skip on JDK 21+, where System.setSecurityManager is unavailable.
  • mvn -B -pl apollo-mockserver spotless:check
  • Regression tests cover a failed acquisition (later servers can still install the bridge), a failed release (retryable), and the retained MockWebServer logger.

📝 Walkthrough

The mockserver adds the JUL-to-SLF4J dependency. ApolloTestingServer acquires the bridge after successful startup and releases it after startup failure or close. JulSlf4jBridge restores the MockWebServer logger's prior handlers when the final installation is released.

Moving the bridge out of the static initializer fixes the class-loading side effect, but three reproducible issues remain:

  1. JUL backend compatibility — JulSlf4jBridge.java:41 installs the bridge unconditionally. With slf4j-jdk14, the next log event loops through JUL → SLF4J → JUL and throws StackOverflowError. Please make installation opt-in or skip incompatible backends.
  2. Lifecycle accounting — ApolloTestingServer.java:144 releases the bridge on every close(), without per-instance ownership. Starting A and B, then closing A twice, removes the bridge while B is still running; closing B then makes the count negative. Closing an unstarted instance also corrupts the count, and startup failures leave the bridge acquired. Please balance acquisition/release per instance and roll back failed startup.
  3. Existing JUL handlers — JulSlf4jBridge.java:40 removes all root handlers. Unrelated application records stop reaching existing JUL file/capture handlers for the server’s lifetime, even with Logback. Restoring handlers afterward cannot recover those records. Please scope the bridge to MockWebServer’s logger or let explicit test bootstrap own the global logging configuration.

Please add regression tests for these cases. The existing tests and required CI checks pass, but do not cover these logging behaviors.

@nobodyiam thanks for the thorough repro cases — all three addressed in 8c1f08e:

  1. JUL backend compatibility: JulSlf4jBridge.install() now checks the SLF4J binding via LoggerFactory.getILoggerFactory() and skips installation (with a warning log) when it's slf4j-jdk14, avoiding the JUL↔SLF4J loop. The detection logic is exposed as a package-visible pure function (isJdk14Binding(String)) so it's unit-testable without needing to swap the actual runtime binding.

  2. Lifecycle accounting: added a per-instance bridgeAcquired guard in ApolloTestingServer, so acquireJulBridge()/releaseJulBridge() are idempotent from each instance's own perspective — a repeated close() call, or close() on an instance that was never start()ed, is now a no-op against the shared counter instead of double-decrementing it. start() also rolls back the acquisition if it throws partway through, instead of leaving the bridge held with no matching close().

  3. Existing JUL handlers: the bridge now only touches the JUL logger MockWebServer actually logs through (okhttp3.mockwebserver.MockWebServer) — it no longer calls removeHandlersForRootLogger() at all, so the JUL root logger and any handlers on it (file/capture handlers, etc.) are left completely untouched for the whole mock server lifetime, not just restored afterward.

Added JulSlf4jBridgeTest covering the binding check plus both lifecycle-accounting repros described above (double-close while another server is active, and closing a never-started instance while another server is active). Full apollo-mockserver suite (17 tests) passes locally.

Add coverage for failed-start cleanup. The current lifecycle tests do not make ApolloTestingServer.start() fail after acquireJulBridge(). Add a focused test that forces startup to throw, then asserts that the MockWebServer logger has no SLF4JBridgeHandler. This protects the catch-and-release path from regression.

The previous three blocking issues are resolved, and the required checks pass. One reproducible bridge-lifetime issue remains:

Keep a strong reference to the JUL logger (JulSlf4jBridge.java:59). install() retains the handler but only a local reference to its logger. During the first ApolloTestingServer.start(), GC between bridge installation and new MockWebServer() can collect that logger. MockWebServer then obtains a fresh logger without the bridge, while ACTIVE remains 1, so its logs bypass SLF4J for the server's lifetime.

I reproduced this on JDK 8 by triggering GC in an overridden resetOverriddenProperties() during the first start: started=true, bridgePresent=false, ACTIVE=1. Retaining the logger in a static field makes the same probe pass.

Please retain the same logger through installation and teardown, and add a regression test that does not itself keep an extra strong reference before MockWebServer initializes. Please also add the PR-linked CHANGES.md entry.

Make the logger-retention test deterministic.

System.gc() only requests garbage collection. If the strong reference is removed, the logger can remain alive, so the later Logger.getLogger(...) assertion can still pass. Assert the retained logger directly.

  1. Previous issue resolved. The logger-retention fix in df00f44 passes the first-start GC probe, and the retained reference is released after close. The CHANGES.md entry is present. Local JDK 8 tests pass: 714 tests, 4 skipped.

  2. CI still blocks merging. The required unit-integration-pr check fails in two ConfigDataIntegrationTest cases (lines 139 and 150): expected ok and 35, but received null. These failures did not reproduce locally. Please investigate and get this check green before merging.

  3. Non-blocking test improvement. The new GC regression test also passes with the old bridge implementation when earlier tests have already initialized MockWebServer. Please make it independent of prior class initialization so it reliably detects the original defect.

Roll back a failed bridge installation.

If JulSlf4jBridge.install() throws while changing JUL handlers, it has already incremented its shared count. bridgeAcquired remains false, so close() cannot release that count. A later server can then skip installation because the count is nonzero. Make installation restore the logger state and shared count on failure. Also close the running MockWebServer if acquisition fails after startup.

CI failure is pre-existing, not caused by this PR

I spent a significant amount of time investigating the unit-integration-pr failure in ConfigDataIntegrationTest (2 tests: testImportMultipleNamespacesAndConditionalOnProperty and testApolloConfigChangeListenerWithInterestedKeyPrefixes).

I tried several defensive approaches:

  • Moved bridge installation after MockWebServer starts (5464b70)
  • Made jul-to-slf4j optional + reflection-based SLF4JBridgeHandler instantiation (fe502bc, 681abd4)
  • Full early-return in install() before any JUL operations (e9a50a4)
  • Made bridge lifecycle explicit opt-in — start()/close() identical to main (20bd5ec)
  • Reverted root pom.xml to main (b151a31)

None of these fixed it. So I reverted ALL code to be identical to main in 053be47 (keeping only the CHANGES.md entry) and pushed to CI. The same 2 tests still failed: run 38338675302.

This confirms the ConfigDataIntegrationTest failure is pre-existing and unrelated to this PR's changes. The last successful CI run on main was September 4, 2026. The GitHub Actions runner environment (Ubuntu image, JDK Temurin patch version, etc.) has likely changed since then, causing this test to become flaky.

The test passes locally on both JDK 8 (Azul) and JDK 21, with and without -P travis jacoco:report. All other CI jobs (compile-matrix, code-style-check, compat-*) pass consistently.

JulSlf4jBridge.install() increments ACTIVE at line 54 before changing handlers, while ApolloTestingServer.acquireJulBridge() sets bridgeAcquired only after installation returns. On JDK 8, denying LoggingPermission("control") makes acquisition throw with ACTIVE=1; after restoring permissions, releasing that owner cannot clear the count, and another server reaches ACTIVE=2 without installing a bridge. The release path has a related problem at line 99: if handler removal throws, retrying release drives ACTIVE to -1. Please make both transitions exception-safe, restore the logger state on failure, and cover failed acquisition and retried release in the existing bridge tests.

  2. Align the description and usage guidance with the current opt-in design. The PR description still promises automatic installation in a static initializer. The implementation now leaves start()/close() unchanged, makes jul-to-slf4j optional, and requires explicit acquireJulBridge()/releaseJulBridge() calls. Please describe that contract and show the dependency plus a try/finally usage example.

  3. The previous CI blocker is resolved. After #148 merged, all 13 required checks pass, including unit-integration-pr and code style. Local JDK 8 tests for apollo-mockserver and its dependencies also pass: 594 tests, 1 skipped, no failures or errors. codecov/patch remains a separate, non-required failure at 61.11% patch coverage.

okhttp's MockWebServer logs through java.util.logging directly, so its output
bypassed slf4j/logback in test runs even when jul-to-slf4j was already on the
classpath.

Add an opt-in JUL to SLF4J bridge for MockWebServer logs:

- Only the okhttp3.mockwebserver.MockWebServer logger is reconfigured, never the
  JUL root logger, so unrelated JUL handlers keep receiving records.
- Skipped when jul-to-slf4j is absent or when the binding is slf4j-jdk14, which
  would turn the bridge into a JUL<->SLF4J logging loop.
- Reference-counted per ApolloTestingServer instance, so concurrently running
  servers do not remove the bridge from under each other.
- The ownership count only moves once the logger transition succeeded, so a
  failed acquire leaves the bridge reusable for later servers and a failed
  release stays retryable instead of poisoning the count.
- The MockWebServer logger is retained strongly for the bridge's lifetime so GC
  cannot silently detach its handler during startup.

start()/close() keep their behaviour; callers opt in with acquireJulBridge() and
releaseJulBridge().
