fix(sdk): release a Worker's per-request MCP server when its streamed reply ends - #963
On a Cloudflare Worker, a request on any MCP revision before 2026-07-28 is answered by runWebStandardMcp with its own McpServer and transport. When the reply streams as SSE, the server's teardown was handed to ctx.waitUntil and waited for transport.onclose. The MCP SDK's transport ends the stream after the last reply but fires onclose only from close(), which nothing called, so that promise never settled.
The client got its whole reply. The runtime then cancelled the leftover task and logged either The Workers runtime canceled this request because it detected that your Worker's code had hung or waitUntil() tasks did not complete within the allowed time. That happened after every streamed reply. On the docs server at mcp.frontmcp.dev (1.10.11) it was 3,092 hung errors and 2,678 waitUntil warnings in 7 days, nearly all of them from legacy clients and scanners. The 2026-07-28 path was not affected.
The teardown now follows the response body. The body is piped through a TransformStream, and the server closes when the pipe ends, whether the reply finished or the client cancelled.
On this per-request path, a GET for the standalone SSE stream opened a stream that no request could ever write to, so clients waited until they gave up. It is now answered 405, which the spec allows for a server that offers no GET stream. Any other method this path doesn't serve, such as PUT, gets the same 405 and Allow: POST, DELETE, instead of the transport's 405 that advertised GET. A Durable Object's persistent session (options.persistent) keeps its GET stream.
User-facing change
What changed: A stateless Worker (no Durable Object session host) answers GET on its MCP endpoint with 405 Method Not Allowed (Allow: POST, DELETE, JSON-RPC error -32000) instead of an SSE stream that never sent anything. Other methods it doesn't serve, such as PUT, get the same response.
Before → after:GET / with Accept: text/event-stream returned 200 text/event-stream and stayed open until the client or the runtime gave up → 405 right away. Streamed POST replies are unchanged for clients and no longer leave a hung waitUntil task.
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): Cloudflare Workers deployment pages, if they describe the GET stream on a stateless Worker.
Skills catalog entries updated:frontmcp-deployment/references/deploy-to-cloudflare.md no longer says a stateless Worker honors the GET stream.
Tests
New libs/sdk/src/transport/__tests__/web-standard-mcp.stream-teardown.spec.ts (4 tests). It checks that the waitUntil teardown settles and the per-request McpServer is closed after the reply is read or the client cancels, and not before. It also checks that GET and PUT get 405 with Allow: POST, DELETE without building a server. Before the fix, the teardown never settled and GET got 200. Removing the close() call makes the two teardown tests fail.
nx test skills: 249 tests passing.
libs/sdk/src/transport, libs/sdk/src/scope/flows and libs/sdk/src/front-mcp specs: 102 suites, 1,250 tests passing.
nx test demo-e2e-cloudflare: 16 passed, 5 skipped (the managed-edge suite).
By hand, under wrangler dev (workerd):
Against the 1.10.11 docs worker, every streamed legacy initialize or tools/list logged one hung error.
Against the e2e fixture built with this branch, the same sequential and concurrent requests logged 0 hung errors and 0 waitUntil warnings, and GET got 405.
nx build sdk, tsc over the spec config, ESLint, Prettier and scripts/fix-unused-imports.mjs are clean.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Behavior Changes
Stateless MCP requests now accept only POST and DELETE; other methods return 405 with an Allow header.
Stateless GET requests no longer open server-sent event streams. For accepted requests, servers close after non-streaming responses or when streaming responses finish.
Documentation
Clarified that server-to-client event streams and pushed notifications require stateful sessions; stateless Workers do not provide session IDs.
… reply ends
On a Worker, a request on any MCP revision before 2026-07-28 gets its own
McpServer and transport. When the reply streamed as SSE, the server's
teardown went to ctx.waitUntil and waited for transport.onclose. The
transport ends the stream after the last reply but fires onclose only
from close(), which nothing called, so the promise never settled. The
client had its whole reply; the runtime then cancelled the leftover task
and logged "Worker's code had hung", or the waitUntil time limit warning,
after every streamed reply.
The teardown now follows the response body: it is piped through a
TransformStream, and the server closes when the pipe ends, whether the
reply finished or the client went away.
A GET for the standalone SSE stream on this per-request path opened a
stream that nothing could ever write to, so the client waited until it
gave up. It is now answered 405, which the spec allows for a server that
offers no GET stream. A Durable Object's persistent session keeps its
GET stream.

Walkthrough
Stateless web MCP requests now accept POST and DELETE. SSE negotiation and server teardown depend on the response type. The deployment guide describes the stateful-session requirements for server-to-client GET streams.

Stateless requests with methods other than POST or DELETE return 405 with Allow: POST, DELETE. SSE is enabled only when configured and requested. The server closes immediately for responses without an SSE body, or after SSE piping completes. Tests cover stream completion, client cancellation, and unsupported methods. The deployment guide states that standalone GET streams require stateful sessions.

Explanation
The title names the main change: a fix in the SDK that releases a Worker's per-request MCP server when its streamed reply ends. It matches the teardown fix described in the PR objectives and the web-standard-mcp.ts changes. The title is specific and concise. It is 80 characters, which is at the upper limit of a short title but still readable.

Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has 'What and why', 'User-facing change' with the four required bullets, and 'Tests'. It explains the root cause, the teardown fix, the 405 behavior for GET and other methods, and the skills catalog update. It also gives concrete test results and manual verification steps. The description does not mention the frontmcp.dev pages to update beyond a conditional note, but the template allows that field to be conditional ('if known').

The tests currently prove only that response forwarding settles. If the .then(() => mcpServer.close()) callback is removed, pipeTo(writable) can still settle and both tests can pass. Spy on the imported McpServer.prototype.close, assert it is called after completion or cancellation, and assert it is not called before the stream ends.

…he same 405
Only GET was answered 405 up front. A PUT, or any other method, still
reached the MCP transport, whose 405 lists Allow: GET, POST, DELETE and
so advertises the GET a stateless Worker now refuses. Every method other
than POST and DELETE now gets the same 405 and Allow: POST, DELETE.
The stream-teardown spec now checks the per-request server is closed
after the streamed reply ends or the client cancels, and not before, so
dropping the close no longer passes. The Cloudflare deployment skill no
longer says a stateless Worker honors the GET stream.
