fix(sdk): httpRespond.redirect() takes a path, and an @HttpRoute output that fails its schema answers 500 - #1056
httpRespond.redirect(location) took any string, but HttpRedirectSchema required location: z.string().url(). An @HttpRoute value counted as a response only when it passed httpOutputSchema; anything else was sent as JSON. So httpRespond.redirect('/board') answered 200 with {"kind":"redirect","status":302,"location":"/board"} as its body.
HttpRedirectSchema.location takes an absolute URL or a reference relative to the request (/board, ?page=2), which RFC 9110 section 10.2.2 allows. It refuses an empty location, whitespace and control characters: a \r\n in a location would otherwise split the header.
In the http:route flow, a value that passes httpOutputSchema is a response, as before, with the schema's defaults: { kind: 'redirect', location: '/board' } is a 302, as a statusless redirect to an absolute URL was in 1.11.0. A value with a response kind (redirect, json, text, html, binary, image, stream, sse, jsonrpc, problem, empty, web-response) and a status field that fails the schema is a broken response. Every httpRespond helper that can fail sets status. A broken response fails the request through FlowControl.fail with InvalidHttpRouteResponseError, which names the route and the problem. The flow logs it at error level, so it shows on the fetch adapter too, which doesn't log flow failures. The client gets 500 Internal Server Error and never the output. Any other object is still sent as JSON: one with no kind, another kind, no status (such as { kind: 'text', text: 'hello' }), or next / consumed.
The Express writer called res.redirect(location), which always answers 302. Express 4 also reads the location back as the request's Referer, which the relaxed rule would have turned into an open redirect. It now sets Location itself and sends the output's status, as the fetch adapter and the relay do. So a 301/303/307/308 redirect answers the same on every adapter.
A header carries ASCII only: Node's setHeader throws ERR_INVALID_CHAR on /board/東京, and Web Headers throws too. The Express writer, the fetch renderer and the relay's redirect() all write Location through one helper, toLocationHeader() in libs/sdk/src/utils (not exported). It encodes as Express's res.location() (encodeurl) does: characters a URL does not carry are percent-encoded as UTF-8. Those are characters outside ASCII, ", <, >, `, {, }, a % that starts no %XX escape, and any whitespace or control character in an output that skipped the schema. It keeps URL separators and %XX escapes, and turns a lone surrogate into U+FFFD, since encodeURI() throws on one. It also encodes a trailing %4, which encodeurl's pattern misses. Built-in redirects use 302 and absolute URLs, so they don't change.
User-facing change
What changed:httpRespond.redirect() takes a path. An invalid httpRespond-kind output from an @HttpRoute fails with 500 and a logged error. A redirect's status is kept on Express.
Before → after:
return httpRespond.redirect('/board'): 200, application/json body {"kind":"redirect",...} → 302, Location: /board.
return { ...httpRespond.json(body), status: 301 }: 200 with the output as JSON → 500 Internal Server Error, and an error log HTTP route GET /path returned an invalid "json" response: status: ....
return { ...httpRespond.redirect(url), status: 301 } on the Express host: 302 → 301 (the fetch adapter already answered 301).
return httpRespond.redirect('https://desk.example/board/東京'): Express sent it encoded, and the fetch adapter failed on the header → every adapter sends Location: https://desk.example/board/%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC, as Express did. A stray % (/items/100%) is sent as %25 on every adapter, which Express already did and the fetch adapter didn't.
New export InvalidHttpRouteResponseError (code INVALID_HTTP_ROUTE_RESPONSE).
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known):reference/sdk/http-route (the Caveats entry on relative redirects can go; the return-value table gains the invalid-output row).
return-value table: an invalid httpRespond output → 500, logged;
httpRespond.redirect() takes an absolute URL or a relative reference. Characters a URL does not carry are sent percent-encoded as Express encodes them (outside ASCII, ", <, >, `, {, }, a stray %), and the rest as given. A browser takes //other.example off-site;
which objects count as responses: a value valid for its response kind, with the kind's defaults (a redirect without status is a 302); an invalid one with a status fails with 500.
Tests
http-route/__tests__/http-route.flow.spec.ts, on both the Express and the web-fetch adapter:
httpRespond.redirect('/board') answers 302 with Location: /board, and an absolute URL still redirects.
A 301 redirect output answers 301.
A redirect whose location carries \r\n Set-Cookie, and a JSON output with a 301 status, both answer 500 with no Location and no Set-Cookie. The body never contains the output, and the scope logger's error names the route.
An object with kind: 'card', and one with kind: 'text' and no status, are still sent as JSON.
httpRespond.redirect('back') sends Location: back with a Referer header present, never the referrer.
{ kind: 'redirect', location: '/board' } with no status answers 302 with Location: /board.
httpRespond.redirect('/board/東京?city=Zürich') sends Location: /board/%E6%9D%B1%E4%BA%AC?city=Z%C3%BCrich. Without the encoding, Express throws ERR_INVALID_CHAR and the fetch adapter's Headers throws.
Without the fix, the relative redirect, the 301 and both invalid-output cases fail on both adapters.
common/schemas/__tests__/http-output.schema.spec.ts: the locations the schema takes and refuses, and the 302 default.
utils/__tests__/http-location.utils.spec.ts:
kept as they are: paths, relative references with a query and a fragment, absolute URLs, and existing %XX escapes;
UTF-8 percent-encoding, a character outside the BMP included;
whitespace, \r\n and DEL encoded;
", <, >, `, { and } encoded, as Express encodes them;
a % that starts no escape, at the end, before a non-hex character, before one hex digit, or before a non-ASCII character, encoded as %25;
a lone surrogate sent as %EF%BF%BD.
transport/relay/__tests__/relay-http.spec.ts: the relay's redirect('/board/東京') sends the encoded location.
demo-e2e-web-host: a public /home route redirects to /board (302, Location: /board) on the real server.
demo-e2e-bundle-size: sdk-root-exports.json gains InvalidHttpRouteResponseError. The location check adds 9 bytes to the browser bundle of create() + WebMcpPlugin (budget 1,290,033 → 1,290,042) and 15 bytes to the Vite initial chunk (762,815 → 762,830). Both were measured locally, and the numbers match CI. The Location encoder adds 194 bytes more to create() + WebMcpPlugin (1,290,042 → 1,290,236). create() + one tool (1,283,054 of 1,283,161) and the Vite initial chunk (762,830) stay within their budgets.
Ran: nx test sdk for src/http-route, src/common, src/server, src/auth, src/transport, src/errors and src/utils (243 suites, 3283 tests; the OAuth flows' absolute redirects are unchanged; after the encodeurl alignment, src/utils, src/http-route, src/transport, src/server and src/common/schemas again: 109 suites, 1670 tests), demo-e2e-bundle-size (63 tests) and demo-e2e-web-host (8 tests), tsc --noEmit on libs/sdk/tsconfig.lib.json and tsconfig.spec.json (no errors in the changed files).
The SDK accepts validated relative redirect locations and normalizes route outputs by response kind. Invalid response-shaped outputs fail with a logged 500. Redirect responses set Location and the configured status. Tests, a web-host redirect route, export fixtures, bundle budgets, and route guidance are updated.
Redirect locations can be absolute URLs or references resolvable relative to localhost. Validation rejects empty values, whitespace, and control characters. Tests cover accepted and rejected values and the default redirect status.
HttpRouteFlow validates recognized response kinds and returns ordinary objects as JSON. Invalid response-shaped values produce a logged, route-specific error and a 500. Tests cover redirect and object responses across adapters.
Redirect locations are normalized before they are written to response headers. Tests cover percent-encoding behavior, and route guidance documents redirect rules and invalid response behavior.
Web-host redirect example apps/e2e/demo-e2e-web-host/src/apps/board/board.routes.ts, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-web-host/src/apps/board/index.ts, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-web-host/e2e/web-host.e2e.spec.ts, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-bundle-size/e2e/fixtures/sdk-root-exports.json, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-bundle-size/e2e/browser-bundle-size.e2e.spec.ts
The demo registers a public /home route that redirects to /board. Its E2E test checks the 302 status and Location header. The SDK export fixture adds InvalidHttpRouteResponseError, and the bundle-size budgets increase.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Issue #1053 requires relative redirects and visible handling of invalid httpRespond outputs. HttpRedirectSchema accepts relative references such as /board and rejects empty, whitespace, and control-character locations. HttpRouteFlow validates recognized response kinds, logs InvalidHttpRouteResponseError, and fails invalid outputs before rendering. Tests cover relative redirects, invalid outputs, 500 responses, and Express and web-fetch adapters. The Express writer preserves the redirect status and location.

Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has the sections "What and why", "User-facing change" and "Tests", and each section is substantively filled in. The "What and why" section links the issue (Fixes #1053), explains the root cause (the schema required absolute URLs, and invalid outputs were sent as JSON), and lists the behavior changes. The "User-facing change" section gives what changed, before/after examples, affected documentation pages, and updated skills catalog entries. The "Tests" section lists the specific spec files, the adapters covered, the bundle-size budget changes, and the commands run. The description does not fully match the template's placeholder comments, and it does not state the PR number's stacking dependencies in the template's form. These are minor. No required section is missing.

1.11.0's Express writer encoded the location with encodeurl: a % that

toLocationHeader() now encodes the same set on every adapter, and also
