fix(sdk, cli, auth, plugins): 1.11 follow-ups — CLI config checks, one browser store refusal, no stores opened by a build, steadier tests - #1043
The follow-ups found while reviewing #1033, #1034, #1036 and #1038–#1042, in one PR: CLI config and validation, browser
builds, flaky tests, and what a review of the three together found.
CLI config and validation
Every option the server validates is validated in CLI mode. For a config object, parseFrontMcpConfigLite passed http, pubsub, transport, pagination, fetch, elicitation, extApps, ui, throttle, health, metrics
and authorities through as z.any(), and dropped session, clients, observability, registry and channels.
So an invalid transport.persistence, which CLI mode opens (createForCli() builds a TransportService and writes
the SQLite session file), was opened as given. Each key is now checked with the server's own schema
(frontMcpBaseSchema.shape[key]), and a failure reports the server's paths and messages.
The value is kept as given, so a valid config runs as before: the server's defaults would change CLI behaviour
(the transport and http defaults, the origin normalization of fetch.forwardCallerTokenTo, which decides which
hosts get the caller's token, and the mcp: key prefix of a parsed transport.persistence.redis).
The five dropped keys are checked and still left out, so CLI mode turns none of them on.
authorities was made pass-through in parseFrontMcpConfigLite strips authorities, breaks every CLI/MCPB build #366 because the lite schema stripped it and the scope's authorities engine
then failed. That still holds, so it is checked and kept as given: an invalid known field fails as on the server,
and keys the server's schema does not know still reach the engine.
Vercel KV on jobs. The job stores open jobs.store.redis with ioredis whatever its provider, so on Node { provider: 'vercel-kv' } connected to a Redis on localhost. Supporting it isn't trivial (the Redis job store needs
sets and atomic claims over the Redis protocol), so both job store factories refuse it with JobStoreNotSupportedError, in server and CLI mode and in the detached runner. A top-level Vercel KV redis was
already passed over for jobs; a test now pins that.
Redis error message. A redis with neither host nor url (both from unset variables, say) failed with Zod's Invalid input. It now says redis needs host or url, wherever the SDK takes a redis option. Every other message is
unchanged.
Build warning.[build] frontmcp.manifest.json not written: … printed a ZodError's JSON. It now prints each
invalid field as path: message, reading an Invalid input union through its closest branch.
auth.secureStore fell back to memory. The union's bare-object variant matched a config whose sqlite, redis
or backend failed its own variant and stripped the backing, so an empty sqlite.path, a redis without host or
an incomplete backend kept the secrets in memory with no error. That variant now takes no backing, and the union's
error names the backing. createSecureStore() refuses such a config with SecureStoreConfigError.
Typecheck. The three type errors in the demo-e2e-cli-exec specs are fixed.
build-for-cli.md now also says exactly what CLI mode validates and which store settings it never opens.
Browser builds
One refusal for every store. In a page with a top-level redis, startup refused the SDK's own stores first, and
a plugin's store was named only once those were switched off. Plugins now declare their stores with a new static browserStores(options, server) on DynamicPlugin. The startup check reads it for the plugins of the server
and of its class apps, before any store opens, and refuses them all, with the SDK's stores, persistent questions and
jobs, in one BrowserStoreUnavailableError. The plugin registry runs the same declaration for the plugins the check
cannot see (init({ useFactory }) once the factory returns, nested plugins) before it builds them. The official
plugins move their refusePluginStoreInBrowser() calls into the hook; the function still works.
Explicit stores.throttle.storage, auth.tokenStorage and skillsConfig.cache.redis join the startup check,
a resource store (M13) is refused when it opens, and sqliteStorageProvider() when it is built. Only TCP Redis and
SQLite are refused: Vercel KV, Upstash and Cloudflare KV stay allowed.
BrowserStoreUnavailableError typing. Overloads: without the memory map only the SDK's store names
type-check, and a plugin entry without a memory option reads X would use Y, not set undefined.
ioredis in page bundles.CachePlugin and RememberPlugin load ioredis with a lazy require() when they
build a Redis store, so a page on memory or Vercel KV doesn't bundle it. RememberPlugin also stops importing
Node's path. Their type: 'redis' store is built when the server starts, after the browser check, instead of in init().
CJS browser build.dist/browser/index.cjs requires @frontmcp/storage-sqlite instead of bundling it with its node:events. The remaining require()s of Node built-ins run only inside Node-only features and are documented.
Guard blind spot.browser-node-only.e2e.spec.ts now also reports a require() or esbuild __require() of a
Node built-in at a module's top level, and covers the cache and remember plugins. Proven by planting one, then
removing it.
Docs. Using Upstash or Vercel KV from a page puts its REST token in the bundle, where every visitor can read it: build-for-browser.md, setup-redis.md and the cache and remember docs now say so.
Windows paths. The bundle helpers name inputs with / on every platform.
Flaky tests and test infrastructure
transport.registry.spec.ts and scope-store-off.spec.ts: one cause. Jest caches module IDs per worker. Four
sdk specs mocked @frontmcp/storage-sqlite with { virtual: true } (registered under the bare name) and three
without (under the resolved path), so whichever ran first in a worker fixed the ID, and a later spec's mock was
skipped and the real store opened. The four drop virtual: true; the module always resolves. 16 shuffled
single-worker orders and 24 loaded runs now pass; before, 13 of 16 orders and 6 of 12 loaded runs failed.
cli-install-claude-plugin exit code 2.tsc's "errors, output emitted": a concurrent nx task in the same
worktree rebuilt libs/sdk/dist under the fixture build (reproduced 8 of 8 times). It can't be fixed from a spec,
but the fixture build's error now carries its stdout and stderr, where the TypeScript diagnostics go.
webpack is a root devDependency, at the range the lockfile already resolves (5.105.1).
app.lazy.calls.spec.ts could straddle a rate-limit window boundary (1 of 15 loaded runs); it now starts
mid-window like the other rate-limit specs.
plugin-codecall should execute simple scripts quickly timed a cold first execute(). It now warms up, then
asserts the fastest of three calls.
Found reviewing the three together
A disposed scope kept its session store. Only DirectMcpServerImpl.dispose() destroyed the transport service.
A scope disposed by FrontMcpInstance.shutdown(), by connect()'s last release or by a CLI host kept it: a session
store that failed at startup kept retrying with backoff, and an SQLite one kept its file open. In one jest worker, scope-vercel-kv-tasks.spec.ts followed by job-durability.spec.ts logged "Cannot log after tests are done" 18
times and exited 1 with every test passing. The scope now registers transportService.destroy() with its own onDispose(), so it runs last among the dispose callbacks, after the requests in flight; destroy() is idempotent,
so the direct server's own call is harmless. That ordered run now logs nothing and exits 0.
One Redis client per server. Building CachePlugin/RememberPlugin's type: 'redis' store at server start
gave every server that installed one init() record its own ioredis client, none of which is ever closed (before,
the record held one, made in init()). The store is now built once, when the first server that installs the
record starts, and shared, as before. Startup with Redis down is unchanged: the client is built without waiting for
a connection and logs its errors, before and after.
auth.secureStore in a page. The startup check named auth.tokenStorage but not auth.secureStore, so a local
auth in a page with a secure store on SQLite or Redis failed with Cannot find module '@frontmcp/storage-sqlite' or ioredis is required. It now joins the one refusal, naming auth.secureStore: 'memory'. In a page, an invalid
secure store is still refused by the schema first, and a valid one on Redis or SQLite by the browser check, before createSecureStore() runs.
A new storeProvider(provider) marks a factory provider that opens a store and returns it as given. When the
provider registry builds a marked GLOBAL factory during a manifest boot (createForManifest(), what frontmcp build and buildManifest() use), it skips the factory and gives what injects the token a stand-in
that throws StoreNotOpenedInBuildError (STORE_NOT_OPENED_IN_BUILD) when called. Every other boot runs the
factory as before, so a server without redis still fails at startup with the plugin's message, and the shared type: 'redis' client of fix 2 stays.
The cache (global-store, redis), remember (global-store, redis), approval (store and webhook challenge
store) and result-handles stores, and the SDK's sqliteStorageProvider(), are made with it. A third-party
plugin gets the same by making its store provider with storeProvider(), as it declares its browser stores with browserStores.
Marking the factory, rather than wrapping it, keeps every factory's signature: the plugins' unit tests still call useFactory(config) directly.
Checked and left as they are:
CLI startup cost. The fixture CLI of demo-e2e-cli-exec (a config object) against two SDK builds that differ
only in the lite parser, median of 15 alternating runs: a tool call takes 279.9 ms with main's parser and 277.2 ms
with this PR's, --help 38.9 and 40.7 ms (noise). The extra check runs only for the keys a config sets: a cold lite
parse of a config that sets 12 of them goes from about 4 ms to about 8 ms. The scope-init-perf lite-vs-full ratio
is about 2x with either parser, so its one failure under load is that micro-benchmark's noise.
The decorator's output in CLI mode. A @FrontMcp class reaches the lite parser already parsed. Re-parsing that
output with the checks passed for every key's defaults and for 30 sample configs, so a valid class's CLI isn't
refused.
The esbuild size model. It now leaves out only the import() edges of the utils and auth browser builds. For create() + one tool, what that removes is the four createStorage() adapters (Redis, Upstash, Vercel KV,
Cloudflare KV) and the storage helpers only they use. A static import is still followed, bundled and counted, so the
model can't hide a static import regression, and the Vite build, which measures the real initial chunk, is
unaffected. A page that starts create() + one tool and calls the tool runs none of the left-out imports.
The monorepo's own builds. Inside this repo, the build's manifest extraction resolves @frontmcp/* through the
root tsconfig paths and inlines a second copy of the SDK, so a plugin that injects FrontMcpConfig misses the
token (frontmcp.manifest.json not written: Provider "FrontMcpConfig" is not registered). A user project, with
its own tsconfig, loads one copy; the new build e2e projects get a tsconfig of their own, like a user's.
CLI mode validates every option the server validates and runs with the value as given.
Vercel KV is refused for job stores with JobStoreNotSupportedError (JOB_STORE_NOT_SUPPORTED), exported from @frontmcp/sdk.
A redis with neither host nor url says redis needs host or url.
The build's manifest warning names each invalid field.
An auth.secureStore backing the store cannot use stops startup; createSecureStore() throws SecureStoreConfigError (SECURE_STORE_CONFIG_INVALID), exported from @frontmcp/auth.
In a browser, one BrowserStoreUnavailableError lists every store that would open TCP Redis or SQLite, with its
switch: tasks, elicitation, persistent questions, jobs, throttle.storage, auth.tokenStorage, auth.secureStore, skillsConfig.cache.redis and every plugin store. New names in error.stores: rateLimits, authTokens, secureStore, skillsCache, resourceStore, sqliteStorage. A resource store on Redis or SQLite is refused when
it opens; sqliteStorageProvider() when it is built (as the originalError of its ProviderConstructionError).
New static browserStores(options, server) on DynamicPlugin, and new types PluginStoreInBrowser and PluginStoreServer. isVercelKvProvider() also takes an unparsed redis option. new BrowserStoreUnavailableError([['MyPlugin', …]]) without the memory map no longer type-checks.
The official plugins no longer throw from init() in a page; startup refuses them in the one error. On Node, a CachePlugin/RememberPlugintype: 'redis' store connects when the first server that installs it starts,
rather than in init(); the servers that share one init() share its client, as before.
ioredis is no longer in a page bundle that uses CachePlugin/RememberPlugin, and RememberPlugin no longer
imports Node's path. @frontmcp/sdk's dist/browser/index.cjs requires @frontmcp/storage-sqlite instead of
bundling it.
Disposing a scope closes its session store (transport.persistence): graceful shutdown, connect()'s last
release and the CLI host now close it.
A build reads the server without building its plugins' stores: new storeProvider() and StoreNotOpenedInBuildError (STORE_NOT_OPENED_IN_BUILD), exported from @frontmcp/sdk. The official plugins'
stores and sqliteStorageProvider() use it.
Before → after:
Generated CLI / connect(config, { mode: 'cli' }) / the build's manifest boot of a config object with an invalid http, pubsub, transport (including transport.persistence), pagination, fetch, elicitation, extApps, ui, throttle, health, metrics, authorities, session, clients, observability, registry
or channels: ran, and opened an invalid transport.persistence → fails at startup with the server's ZodError,
before any store opens. Valid values are used as given, and the five keys CLI mode leaves off stay off.
jobs.store.redis: { provider: 'vercel-kv' }: connected to Redis on localhost → Vercel KV is not supported for job stores: jobs.store.redis is opened over the Redis protocol, which Vercel KV does not serve. Use a Redis server, jobs.store.sqlite, or jobs.store: false.
redis: { port: 6380 } (or {}, { provider: 'redis' }, unset host and url): Invalid input → redis needs host or url, in server and CLI mode; createTaskStore(): Invalid Redis configuration: redis needs host or url.
[build] frontmcp.manifest.json not written: [ { "code": … } ] → … not written: info.name: Invalid input: expected string, received number.
auth.secureStore: { sqlite: { path: '' } }, { redis: { url } } or an incomplete { backend }: secrets kept
in memory, no error → startup fails naming the backing, e.g. secureStore.redis.host: Invalid input: expected string, received undefined.
A page with redis, default tasks and CachePlugin.init({ type: 'global-store' }): only background tasks would use the top-level redis … → …background tasks would use the top-level redis (…); CachePlugin would use type: 'global-store' (set type: 'memory' in place of type: 'global-store').
CachePlugin.init({ type: 'redis' }) in a page: init() threw → create() rejects.
In a page, throttle.storage: { type: 'redis' }: GuardStorageUnavailableError → rate limits would use throttle.storage: { type: 'redis' } (set throttle.storage: { type: 'memory' } …); skillsConfig.cache.redis (provider: 'redis'): a warning and a memory fallback → refused at startup; auth.secureStore: { sqlite }: Cannot find module '@frontmcp/storage-sqlite' → the secure store would use auth.secureStore.sqlite (set auth.secureStore: 'memory' in place of auth.secureStore.sqlite); resourceStore({ storage: { type: 'sqlite' } }): a module error → a resource store would use storage: { type: 'sqlite' } (set storage: { type: 'memory' } …).
Vite page with CachePlugin + RememberPlugin + create() + one tool: initial chunk 1,563,066 → 1,270,700 bytes,
with no ioredis module.
FrontMcpInstance.shutdown() with transport.persistence: the session store stayed open (one that failed at
startup kept retrying) → closed once the scopes are disposed, logging [TransportService] Session store disconnected.
frontmcp build --target cli or --target mcpb of a server with CachePlugin.init({ type: 'global-store' }) (or RememberPlugin) and redis: { url: process.env['REDIS_URL'] }: failed with Plugin "CachePlugin" requires global "redis" configuration → builds, with frontmcp.manifest.json. The built server, started without the
variable, still fails at startup (redis needs host or url; without any redis, the plugin's message).
A plugin store on Redis (CachePlugin/RememberPlugintype: 'redis', an ApprovalPlugin or ResultHandlesPluginstorage on Redis) or on SQLite, and sqliteStorageProvider(), during a build: connected
or wrote its file → not opened.
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): the CLI build and build manifest pages, the browser deployment page, the
Redis and SQLite setup pages, jobs, auth configuration (auth.secureStore), the official plugins (cache, remember,
approval, result handles), plugin authoring (storeProvider()), resources (materialized resources), distributed HA
(graceful shutdown), and the MCPB build.
Skills catalog entries updated:

Bundle size
Measured with apps/e2e/demo-e2e-bundle-size from packages built in the worktree:
Bundle
main: budget / measured
This PR: measured
This PR: budget
create() + one tool (esbuild model)
1,295,679 / 1,295,491
1,281,902
1,282,438
create() + WebMcpPlugin + one tool (esbuild model)
1,302,694 / 1,302,674
1,289,086
1,289,310
Vite initial chunk, create() + one tool
761,267 / 761,200
762,539
762,606
The esbuild model changed. It now leaves out what the utils and auth browser builds load with import(), as it
already did for the SDK's on-demand modules: the four createStorage() adapters (Redis, Upstash, Vercel KV,
Cloudflare KV), about 19.4 KB, which a page's bundler puts in chunks of their own and create() never loads. Vite's
initial chunk never had them. Measured with the old model, this PR adds 4,544 and 4,554 bytes (1,295,491 → 1,300,035
and 1,302,674 → 1,307,228).
What the code adds, each part measured on its own: the CLI-mode checks and messages, about 1,030 bytes (605 in
Vite's chunk); the one startup check, the plugin declarations and the new store names and messages, about 2.6 KB
(481 in Vite's chunk); this review's scope and secure-store fixes, 156 bytes in each esbuild bundle and 74 in Vite's
chunk; the provider registry's build-boot check, storeProvider() and StoreNotOpenedInBuildError, 796 and 798
bytes, 179 in Vite's chunk.
The two esbuild budgets are the measured sizes plus the usual 536 and 224 bytes of headroom. The Vite budget is main's
plus the measured growth (1,339 bytes).
Not budgeted, measured for the lazy ioredis: a page with CachePlugin + RememberPlugin, Vite initial chunk
1,563,066 → 1,270,700 bytes.
Tests
Every test of a fixed behaviour failed before its fix; the ones that pin unchanged behaviour passed before too.
Unit, by group:
CLI config and validation.parse-lite.spec.ts: for each of the 17 keys, invalid values fail the lite parse with
exactly the issues frontMcpBaseSchema reports (including transport.persistence with an empty sqlite.path and an
unset encryption.secret), valid values are kept as the same object, an unset transport still gets the defaults,
the five keys CLI mode leaves off are dropped, and authorities keeps unknown keys. cli-config-validation.spec.ts
(new), build-extract-stores.spec.ts, job-store.factory.spec.ts, job-store-vercel-kv.spec.ts (new), redis.options.spec.ts, task-store.factory.spec.ts, the CLI's server-manifest.spec.ts, and auth's schemas.spec.ts and secure-store.factory.spec.ts.
Browser builds.browser-stores.spec.ts (one refusal for SDK and plugin stores, on the server and on class apps,
questions and jobs, Vercel KV and memory allowed, the explicit stores' switches, the message without a memory
option), scope-browser-stores.spec.ts, resource-store.browser.spec.ts and sqlite-storage.provider.browser.spec.ts
(new), and the browser-store specs of the cache, remember, approval and result-handles plugins.
Flaky tests. Before: 13 of 16 shuffled single-worker orders of the 35 SQLite-related sdk specs failed, and 6 of
12 runs under load. After: 16 of 16 orders and 24 of 24 loaded runs pass. app.lazy.calls.spec.ts: 0 of 20 loaded
runs fail (a probe moving the clock across a window boundary failed it every time before). plugin-codecall's timing
test: 0 of 24 cold single-test runs under load fail, 5 of 24 before.
This review.scope-dispose.spec.ts: disposing a scope closes its SQLite session store (red before). The ordered
single-worker run of scope-vercel-kv-tasks.spec.ts then job-durability.spec.ts: 18 "Cannot log after tests are
done" and exit 1 before, none and exit 0 after. The cache and remember browser-store specs: two servers that install
one type: 'redis'init() build one client (two before). browser-stores.spec.ts: auth.secureStore on Redis or
SQLite joins the one refusal, and one whose backings are undefined does not. store.provider.spec.ts (new): in a
manifest boot a storeProvider() is not built and what injects it gets a stand-in that throws StoreNotOpenedInBuildError, while createForGraph() and createContainer() build it, and sqliteStorageProvider() writes no file in a manifest boot (red with the registry check disabled). The new *.build-stores.spec.ts of the cache, remember, approval and result-handles plugins: a manifest boot builds no
Redis client and writes no SQLite file (red before: requires global "redis" configuration, one client, the files
written), and a server that starts still builds them and still refuses a global-store without redis.
E2E:
demo-e2e-cli-exec, cli-config-validation.e2e.spec.ts (new): the CLI of a config object with an invalid transport.persistence exits 1 with the server's issue and writes no session file, a valid one runs, redis: { port: 6380 } says redis needs host or url, a Vercel KV jobs.store.redis is refused, and the build
warning reads info.name: Invalid input: expected string, received number.
demo-e2e-bundle-size: one refusal for tasks + CachePlugin + RememberPlugin; throttle.storage, skillsConfig.cache.redis and (this review) auth.secureStore refused in the page bundle, with no store opened; no
ioredis in the plugin page; the CJS build requiring @frontmcp/storage-sqlite; the guard's on-load require()
detection; the budgets above.
demo-e2e-cli-exec, cli-build-plugin-stores.e2e.spec.ts (new): --target cli of a config object with CachePlugin on global-store, redis: { url: process.env['CACHE_REDIS_URL'] } unset and RememberPlugin on a type: 'redis' pointed at a test TCP server builds, writes its manifest and gets no connection; the CLI it builds,
started without the variable, exits 1 with redis needs host or url. Before: the build failed with requires global "redis" configuration.
demo-e2e-mcpb, mcpb-plugin-stores.e2e.spec.ts (new): --target mcpb of a @FrontMcp class with CachePlugin
on global-store and ApprovalPlugin on SQLite builds the archive with its manifest and writes no SQLite file;
the shipped server fails at startup on the unset redis. Before (registry check disabled): the same build error.
demo-e2e-dts-consumer: the BrowserStoreUnavailableError overloads, a plugin's static override browserStores,
and a plugin's storeProvider() (store-provider-must-compile.ts).
Run on this branch, one nx task at a time (the last commit only types the new build-store specs, which were run again
and typecheck clean):
Unit: sdk 676 suites / 9,481 tests, cli 129 / 2,138, auth 101 / 2,864, utils 78 / 2,117, protocol 3 / 9, skills 3 / 249, plugin-cache 16 / 214, plugin-remember 28 / 527, plugin-approval 28 / 433, plugin-result-handles 7 / 88, plugin-codecall 43 / 1,213, plugin-webmcp 6 / 91, plugin-feature-flags 25 / 262.
All passed (auth, utils and protocol, which the build-store fix does not touch, from the run before it).
E2E: demo-e2e-cli-exec 41 / 223 (the testcontainers Redis run included), demo-e2e-bundle-size 12 / 62, demo-e2e-dts-consumer 1 / 35, demo-e2e-mcpb 6 / 24, demo-e2e-local-auth 11 / 74, demo-e2e-frontmcp-config
3 / 32, demo-e2e-jobs 7 / 55, demo-e2e-shared-server 2 / 13, demo-e2e-cloudflare 2 / 16 (its managed-edge-autoupdate suite is describe.skip on main). All passed.
node --test scripts/*.test.mjs: 88 passed. The browser-build check now expects @frontmcp/storage-sqlite among the
CommonJS browser build's externals, beside the ESM build's.
nx run-many -t lint over the 13 projects above, and again over sdk, skills and the four store plugins after
the build-store fix: 0 errors, and no new warnings in the changed files.
prettier --check on every changed file: clean. node scripts/fix-unused-imports.mjs origin/main: no unused imports;
it also strips the two eslint-disable-next-line no-control-regex comments in the cli-exec specs, which the
pre-commit hook's ESLint needs, so those stay.
tsc --noEmit with apps/e2e/demo-e2e-cli-exec/tsconfig.e2e.json, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-bundle-size/tsconfig.e2e.json, libs/sdk/tsconfig.spec.json and the cache, remember, approval and result-handles plugins' lib and spec configs:
clean. apps/e2e/demo-e2e-mcpb/tsconfig.e2e.json reports one error, in mcpb-native-addon.e2e.spec.ts, which this
PR does not change (it is on main).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Browser startup now reports a clear error when configured Redis- or SQLite-backed stores are unavailable, with guidance on supported alternatives.
Build-time manifest generation no longer opens plugin or SQLite stores; those stores are opened when the server starts.
Bug Fixes
Invalid secure-store and Redis configurations now produce more specific validation errors. Vercel KV is rejected for job-store configuration.
CLI configuration is validated against server rules, with invalid settings reported at runtime or build time as appropriate.
Session stores are closed when the server is disposed.
Documentation
Updated browser, CLI, build, authentication, and storage guides to reflect these behaviors.
…dashboard and edge instead of bundling it
The three packages bundled @frontmcp/utils, so their builds imported utils'
own dependencies (@noble/ciphers, @noble/hashes, @enclave-vm/ast,
@upstash/redis, @vercel/kv, ioredis, zod, @frontmcp/lazy-zod) without
declaring them, and loaded a second copy of utils next to the SDK's.
- add @frontmcp/utils to the external list of the CommonJS and ESM builds
- declare @frontmcp/utils at the internal version in plugin-dashboard and edge
- drop the @enclave-vm/ast dependency added in #953; utils declares it
- add demo-e2e-published-imports: packs each package, fails on bundled utils
code or an undeclared bare import, and loads all three under require and
import in a fresh npm project with @enclave-vm/ast 2.16.0 at the top level
Closes#956
Status, content type and body of the answers to JSON, form and other
bodies (charsets, encodings, malformed JSON, limits), and the error a later
error handler receives, before the JSON parser changes.
…ncoding
body-parser's json() decodes UTF-8 through iconv-lite, whose first decoder
loads all of its encodings, about 400 of them, on a server's first JSON
body. The Express host now reads application/json bodies with no charset
or charset=utf-8 through body-parser's raw(), so limits, inflation and read
errors stay its own, then decodes and parses them as json() does: byte
order mark dropped, empty body as {}, the same strict-mode and syntax
errors. Bodies in any other charset still go through json().
Refs #951
The SDK's ESM bundle imported @frontmcp/protocol/client for the direct
client and remote apps, so an ESM process loaded the MCP SDK's client and
its transports at startup. Under require() that subpath was already lazy.
Both now take the client from #protocol-client. Its import variant, which
the ESM build resolves, is a dynamic import() of @frontmcp/protocol/client;
everywhere else it is the static module, so the CommonJS (kept external,
lazy under require()), browser and Worker builds load as before.
Refs #951
The MCP SDK's Server builds an Ajv instance with ajv-formats in its
constructor, to check the results of the elicitations it requests itself.
FrontMCP never calls it for that, yet built one per session (per request on
a stateless web-standard server), about 2.5 ms on a server's first request.
Every MCP server FrontMCP creates now comes from createMcpServer(), whose
validator builds the same AjvJsonSchemaValidator on its first use, so a
server that does validate gets the same answers. @frontmcp/protocol exports
AjvJsonSchemaValidator for it.
Refs #951
… scan and time out npm child processes
The scan reported any function or class named like a @frontmcp/utils export, so a local helper
such as escapeHtml failed it. Names the package's own sources define are now left out, and a
positive control checks that the remaining names still identify definitions in utils' build.
npm install and the load checks run synchronously, which blocks Jest's own timeouts; they now
time out on their own.
When a host hands over a request whose body was already read into a
Buffer, body-parser's raw() skips it and json() leaves it as it is. The
UTF-8 parser parsed that Buffer anyway; it now parses only a body its own
raw() read.
Refs #951
…tens
The transport, and through it @hono/node-server and Node's bundled undici,
loaded with the first Streamable HTTP session, so a server's first
initialize waited for it. A scope that serves Streamable HTTP (streamable,
stateless or JSON responses) now loads it right after the server starts
listening, which is not on the path to listening and is usually before a
client arrives. A stdio server, a serverless handler and a Worker never
start listening and load it as before; an SSE-only server still never
loads it.
Refs #951
… server comes from
`AjvJsonSchemaValidator` came straight from the MCP SDK while `McpServer` comes
through `#mcp-server`, which resolves to the SDK's CommonJS build under `import`.
An ESM server therefore loaded the validator module from both builds. Both now
come from `#mcp-server`.
… transport early
The body pins add brotli, two byte order marks, a parameter other than charset
and a vendor +json type; they pass with and without the UTF-8 JSON parser.
A listening server loads the Streamable HTTP transport after start() returns
and reports ready; createHandler(), createFetchHandler() and runStdio() never do.
…ad with a 500
canActivate awaited the class load outside the Express middleware's error
handling and before the Web fetch handler's, so a load that failed escaped as
an unhandled rejection (Express 4) or a thrown fetch handler. The flow now
claims its route, and its run throws the load error, which both adapters
answer with a 500.
Regenerated from main's own build (91531eb): 42 names added by the feature stack, none removed, no kind changed. The merged build exports the same 966 names and kinds under require() and import.
…sures
internalZ made two closures and their contexts per stand-in, which cost more
than the stand-in itself. A stand-in now keeps zod's factory, its namespace and
the arguments (or the parent and method it was chained from) and drops the
arguments once built. The public z's stand-ins make one closure instead of two.
…s built
A stand-in cleared its arguments before building, so a build that threw left
it empty: the next parse built the schema without them (an internalZ.object
whose build threw became z.object() and accepted any object). It now drops
them after a successful build, as the closure was dropped before.
A chained stand-in also kept its parent stand-in, and the parent's built
schema, for as long as it lived. It now drops the parent once built.
main gained JobRunResource and CancelJobTool. They go through ./subsystems
like the other job exports, so the CommonJS build still loads the job
subsystem the first time one of them is read.
Regenerated from main's own build (998ca63): 76 names added, none removed, no kind changed. This branch's CommonJS and ESM builds export exactly the same names and kinds.
…w/tools subpath exports
The published exports map offers @frontmcp/sdk/transport, /job/tools and
/workflow/tools, but the build emitted only their declarations, so require()
threw MODULE_NOT_FOUND and import threw ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND.
The build now writes each subpath's require and import files as a re-export
of the package root, with the names its source barrel exports, so a subpath
hands back the root's own classes from whichever root build the importer
resolves, and never a second copy of the SDK. The root entry exports the
seven values only ./transport had: the recreateable and SSE transports and
the event stores, which the CommonJS build loads on first read, and
buildScopedServerOptions.
…uild
jobs.store: false keeps job runs and dynamic definitions in memory although
the server has a top-level redis or sqlite. tasks.store: false and
elicitation.store: false do the same for the two other stores that had no
memory switch; transport.persistence: false and
elicitation.persistent.storage: { type: 'memory' } stay as they were.
In the browser build a store that would open Redis over TCP or a SQLite
file, its own or the top-level one, fails startup before any store opens
with BrowserStoreUnavailableError, which names each store's switch. The
top-level sqlite is not resolved there (no default path, no mkdir).
@frontmcp/utils and @frontmcp/auth now ship a browser build of one ES
module per source file, under a `browser` export condition, built like the
SDK's. A bundler keeps only the modules a page reaches, so the stdio
bridge, process supervision, the change feed, people sign-in, the auth
pages and the Redis session stores stay out of it. A `worker` condition
listed first keeps Workers on the ESM bundle; Node resolves as before.
utils' rsaVerify imports its WebCrypto path instead of require('./browser').
The SDK loads CliTaskRunner only with tasks.runner: 'cli', and the file log
transport only in createForCli() and runStdio().
create() + one tool: 1,339,977 -> 1,292,553 bytes (esbuild, minified);
with WebMcpPlugin 1,347,154 -> 1,299,736; Vite initial chunk
964,695 -> 761,067. The budgets follow, and the bundle-size e2e checks
that none of these modules reach either bundle or the initial chunk.
… its session store
Only the direct server destroyed the transport service. A scope disposed by
FrontMcpInstance.shutdown() or connect() kept its session store: one that
failed at startup kept retrying, and an SQLite one kept its file open.
…n init() on redis share its client
Building the type: 'redis' store at server start, rather than at init(),
gave every server its own ioredis client, none of which is closed. The
store is now built once, when the first server that installs it starts.
… its one startup refusal
The startup check named auth.tokenStorage but not auth.secureStore, so a
local auth in a page with a secure store on SQLite or Redis failed with
the storage layer's module or connection error.
…review fixes
The scope's transport-service disposal and the secure store's browser refusal
add 156 bytes to each esbuild bundle and 74 to Vite's initial chunk.
…ite external, beside the ESM build's externals
a70ec4a left @frontmcp/storage-sqlite out of dist/browser/index.cjs, so the
check that the two builds keep the same packages external failed.
…' stores
The build's manifest boot leaves the top-level redis out, so a CachePlugin
or RememberPlugin on global-store failed a --target cli or mcpb build with
'requires global "redis" configuration', and a plugin store on Redis or
SQLite connected, or wrote its file, during the build.
storeProvider() marks a factory provider that opens a store. In a manifest
boot the provider registry does not build it and gives what injects it a
stand-in that throws StoreNotOpenedInBuildError when called; any other boot
builds it as before. The cache, remember, approval and result-handles
stores and sqliteStorageProvider() are made with it.
…ir stores on Redis and SQLite
Both builds succeed without the redis the build leaves out, connect to no
plugin Redis and write no plugin SQLite file, and the shipped server still
checks the redis when it starts.
…Provider()
The provider registry's build-boot check, storeProvider() and
StoreNotOpenedInBuildError add 796 and 798 bytes to the esbuild bundles and
179 to Vite's initial chunk.
The PR adds browser-store discovery and startup refusals, defers marked store providers during manifest builds, and expands CLI, Redis, secure-store, and job-store validation. It also updates plugin store initialization, bundle checks, E2E coverage, and documentation.

Manifest-build store deferral
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Store provider and manifest handling libs/sdk/src/provider/*, libs/sdk/src/errors/build-store.errors.ts, libs/sdk/src/index.ts
The SDK adds storeProvider and a manifest-mode stand-in. Marked factories are skipped during manifest boot; calling the stand-in throws StoreNotOpenedInBuildError.
Tests compare manifest builds with direct startup and check Redis and SQLite behavior. CLI and MCPB tests also check packaged startup.
Build documentation and type fixtures libs/skills/catalog/frontmcp-deployment/references/build-manifest.md, libs/skills/catalog/frontmcp-development/references/create-plugin.md, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-dts-consumer/fixture/*
Documentation describes deferred stores and build-time errors. Type-consumer fixtures cover storeProvider and plugin browser-store declarations.
The CLI parser validates configured values with server schemas, retains valid values without server defaults, and removes selected fields. Redis parsing reports redis needs host or url when both connection fields are absent.
The direct MCPB E2E target can fail on a clean checkout. Add its missing build prerequisites.

Full details: Title check
Explanation
The title is a conventional-commit style summary that names the sdk, cli, auth, and plugins scopes and lists the main themes: CLI config checks, one browser store refusal, no stores opened by a build, and steadier tests. The diff matches these themes (parseFrontMcpConfigLite schema checks, BrowserStoreUnavailableError aggregation, storeProvider build-time stand-ins, flaky-test fixes). It is long (134 characters, 19 words) and lists many items, so it is a little overloaded, but it still names the real changes and does not describe anything absent from the changeset.
Full details: Description check
Explanation
The description follows the repository template. It has a 'What and why' section that explains the change and links the related issues. It has a 'User-facing change' section with what changed, before and after, pages affected, and skills catalog entries. It has a 'Tests' section covering unit, E2E, and verification runs. The template's own placeholder comments are removed. The description is very long, but it is complete and specific.

…d refuse a publicAccess guard on Redis or SQLite in a page
- createSecureStore() selects the backing from the schema's parsed config, so a config naming two backings opens the
one that validated instead of the raw other one.
- In a browser, a throttle.storage on Redis or SQLite is refused at startup also with throttle.enabled: false when
auth.publicAccess.rateLimit builds its guard on it.
- demo-e2e-mcpb builds plugin-approval and plugin-cache before its tests, which its plugin-stores spec imports, and
that spec shows the build's output when the build fails.
- Browser budgets re-fitted to the measured sizes.
E2E chunk 14 (mcpb-plugin-stores.e2e.spec.ts): a real failure, not a flake. The scratch project's tsc failed with TS2307: Cannot find module '@frontmcp/plugin-approval', because CI's dist artifact carries libs/*/dist but not plugins/*/dist, and nothing built the plugins before demo-e2e-mcpb:test. The cli-exec sibling passed because its ^build pulls the plugins in. demo-e2e-mcpb's test target now depends on the plugin-approval and plugin-cache builds, and the spec shows the build's stdout when the build fails. Reproduced by removing the two plugin dists: the spec fails as on CI, and nx run demo-e2e-mcpb:test rebuilds them and passes.
auth.secureStore with two backings:createSecureStore() now opens the backing the schema validated (its parsed output), not the raw other one.
throttle.storage in a page: also refused with throttle.enabled: false when auth.publicAccess.rateLimit builds its guard on it. With enabled unset no guard opens Redis or SQLite: the schema requires enabled, and without throttle the guard is in memory. Catalog row updated.
create-plugin.md: wording fix.
Browser budgets re-fitted to the measured sizes (+40 / +40 / +65 bytes): 1,282,478 / 1,289,350 / 762,671.
…, and count an app's publicAccess before its defaults
- auth.secureStore takes one of sqlite, redis or backend: a config naming more stops startup with
"secureStore takes one backing, not sqlite and redis". createSecureStore() selects from the config as given again,
so a direct call keeps its Redis key prefix and its custom backend.
- The browser check counts auth.publicAccess whose rateLimit is not yet defaulted (an app's own auth) as rate limited.
- demo-e2e-mcpb builds the CLI before its tests too.
- Browser budgets re-fitted to the measured sizes.
Second round, pushed as 9b5552b, for the review of db6ff4f:
auth.secureStore:db6ff4f's selection from the parsed config is reverted, because it changed a direct call's Redis key prefix and its custom-backend choice. The schema now takes one backing, and a config naming several is refused (secureStore takes one backing, not sqlite and redis). The factory selects from the config as given, as before this PR. Catalog updated in configure-auth.md.
Browser check: an auth.publicAccess counts unless its rateLimit is 0, so an app's own auth, read before its defaults, is covered too.
demo-e2e-mcpb:test: also depends on the cli build. Chunk 14 passed on db6ff4f with the plugin builds.
Browser budgets re-fitted to the measured sizes: 1,282,650 / 1,289,522 / 762,815 (sizes 1,282,114 / 1,289,298 / 762,683).

Add the build prerequisites to test:e2e.
The new scenario imports both plugin packages and invokes the CLI from libs/cli/dist/src/core/cli.js. The direct demo-e2e-mcpb:test:e2e target does not build these artifacts, and the scenario does not build them itself.

On the review of 9b5552b, the outside-diff comment about mcpb-plugin-stores.e2e.spec.ts:14-15 (add the build prerequisites to demo-e2e-mcpb:test:e2e):
Not changing it in this PR. Nothing runs the nx test:e2e target: CI's E2E chunks and the root yarn test:e2e script (nx run-many -t test --projects='demo-e2e-*') both run the test target, which now depends on the cli, plugin-approval and plugin-cache builds. test:e2e is a leftover alias that 47 e2e apps define, 34 of them without build deps. Bringing them in line belongs in its own change, across all of them, not in this one.

What and why
The follow-ups found while reviewing #1033, #1034, #1036 and #1038–#1042, in one PR: CLI config and validation, browser
builds, flaky tests, and what a review of the three together found.

That still holds, so it is checked and kept as given: an invalid known field fails as on the server,
and keys the server's schema does not know still reach the engine.
jobs.store.rediswith ioredis whatever its provider, so on Node{ provider: 'vercel-kv' }connected to a Redis on localhost. Supporting it isn't trivial (the Redis job store needssets and atomic claims over the Redis protocol), so both job store factories refuse it with

transport.registry.spec.tsandscope-store-off.spec.ts: one cause. Jest caches module IDs per worker. Foursdk specs mocked

Found reviewing the three together
DirectMcpServerImpl.dispose()destroyed the transport service.A scope disposed by
FrontMcpInstance.shutdown(), byconnect()'s last release or by a CLI host kept it: a sessionstore that failed at startup kept retrying with backoff, and an SQLite one kept its file open. In one jest worker,
scope-vercel-kv-tasks.spec.tsfollowed byjob-durability.spec.tslogged "Cannot log after tests are done" 18times and exited 1 with every test passing. The scope now registers
transportService.destroy()with its ownonDispose(), so it runs last among the dispose callbacks, after the requests in flight;destroy()is idempotent,so the direct server's own call is harmless. That ordered run now logs nothing and exits 0.
CachePlugin/RememberPlugin'stype: 'redis'store at server startgave every server that installed one
init()record its own ioredis client, none of which is ever closed (before, the record held one, made in
init()). The store is now built once, when the first server that installs therecord starts, and shared, as before. Startup with Redis down is unchanged: the client is built without waiting for
a connection and logs its errors, before and after.
auth.secureStorein a page. The startup check namedauth.tokenStoragebut notauth.secureStore, so a localauth in a page with a secure store on SQLite or Redis failed with
Cannot find module '@frontmcp/storage-sqlite'orioredis is required. It now joins the one refusal, namingauth.secureStore: 'memory'. In a page, an invalidsecure store is still refused by the schema first, and a valid one on Redis or SQLite by the browser check, before
createSecureStore()runs.global-storeplugin, and opened plugin stores (a regression since fix(sdk, cli): a build reads a @FrontMcp server without validating its stores, which the server validates when it starts #1042). The build'smanifest boot leaves the top-level
redisout, so a--target cliormcpbbuild of a server withCachePlugin/RememberPluginontype: 'global-store'failed withPlugin "CachePlugin" requires global "redis" configuration. A plugin store on Redis connected, and one on SQLite wrote its file, during the build, againstfrontmcp build fails for a @FrontMcp server whose store settings read a runtime-only secret #1041's contract that a build opens no store.
storeProvider(provider)marks a factory provider that opens a store and returns it as given. When theprovider registry builds a marked GLOBAL factory during a manifest boot (
createForManifest(), whatfrontmcp buildandbuildManifest()use), it skips the factory and gives what injects the token a stand-inthat throws
StoreNotOpenedInBuildError(STORE_NOT_OPENED_IN_BUILD) when called. Every other boot runs thefactory as before, so a server without

model can't hide a static import regression, and the Vite build, which measures the real initial chunk, is
unaffected. A page that starts
create()+ one tool and calls the tool runs none of the left-out imports.@frontmcp/*through theroot tsconfig
pathsand inlines a second copy of the SDK, so a plugin that injectsFrontMcpConfigmisses thetoken (
frontmcp.manifest.json not written: Provider "FrontMcpConfig" is not registered). A user project, withits own tsconfig, loads one copy; the new build e2e projects get a tsconfig of their own, like a user's.
