feat(sdk): job runners — inline, worker-thread and detached runs that outlive the server - #1024
Proposal item 2.2 (b): durable jobs on a local store, part II, runners. A job's attempts always ran on the server's
event loop. A CPU-heavy job blocked every other call, and a run, background or not, lived and died with the server's
process: a restart, a deploy or a crash left it interrupted (after a graceful shutdown) or running forever (after
a crash), and no other server could take it over.
What this PR changes:
jobs.runner and @Job({ runner }): 'inline' | 'worker' | 'detached'. The job's own runner, else the
server's, else 'inline'. Both are checked by Zod (runner must be 'inline', 'worker' or 'detached', jobs.runner must be ...).
'worker' runs the job's execute() in a worker thread of M11's offload pool. Only the execute stage of jobs:execute-job moves: permissions, admission, the timeout, cleanup and the run record stay on the main thread,
as for a worker: true resource. @Job (and job()) records the module that declares the job, from the call stack
as @Resource does, and the worker imports it, finds the job in a registry its own copy of the SDK filled while the
module loaded, builds it with no DI container (this.get() throws ProviderNotAvailableError naming the job) and
runs it. Its this.progress() reaches the run through a new progress message of the pool, its this.log() lines
come back with the result; the latest progress is kept on the run every 500 ms at most, and before the outcome, however
often the worker reports. A timeout, a cancel or a shutdown terminates the worker, so the job really stops. A bundle
that inlines @frontmcp/sdk is refused with InvalidOffloadCallError, as for resources.
'detached' runs the run in a process of its own that outlives the server:
execute_job answers at once with { runId, state: 'pending', uri }, whatever background says. The server
writes a 60 s boot heartbeat for the runner, starts it with spawnOwned under the new exported marker JOB_WORKER_MARKER ('frontmcp-job'), detached into a process group of its own (so stopping the server's group
spares it), stdio: 'ignore', windowsHide, then writes the run with that process as its runner
(runner: { kind, id, pid, hostname }, and the run's scopeId).
The runner is the server's own command again: process.execPath, its execArgv (so a tsx loader carries over; --inspect, --inspect-brk and --inspect-wait are left out, so a runner never waits for a debugger), its entry
and arguments (an older --frontmcp-owner tag dropped), with FRONTMCP_RUN_JOB_ID set. FrontMcpInstance.bootstrap(), runStdio() and runUnixSocket() (so @FrontMcp and the socket daemons too) see
it and run the run instead of serving: the config is booted in process (no transport, no onReady(), no service
channel connection), the run goes through the job execution manager of the scope that started it, its attempts
through the same jobs:execute-job flow, and the process exits. The runner takes FRONTMCP_RUN_JOB_ID out of its
environment first, so a FrontMCP server its job starts does not boot as a runner too.
The runner takes the run over (its pid on the record), keeps its heartbeat key in the store (renewed every second,
a 5 s TTL kept by the store), writes the progress it reports every 500 ms at most (the latest value, never two
writes at once, a failed write retried on the next tick, the pending progress flushed before the attempt's outcome
is written), and reads the store for a cancel every 500 ms. State changes are written at once. All writes go
through M14's per-run serialization, and M14's cancel-wins rule decides the outcome. A ref'd timer keeps the
process alive while the run lasts (the run's own timers are unref'd, and a job may only await its signal).
A runner that cannot boot opens the job store the server would and writes the run failed with JobRunnerBootError (JOB_RUNNER_BOOT_FAILED, with a remedy) naming the cause; so does one whose server no longer
has the job, and a server whose spawn emits error. SIGTERM or SIGINT interrupts the runner's run: its cleanup runs
and it ends interrupted.
A new server instance reads and cancels a detached run. Any server on the store answers get_job_status and job://runs/{runId} for it, and cancel_job writes the cancel to the store as before; the runner aborts within
500 ms and runs the job's cleanup itself. A server watches every detached run it started or found alive (one read
a second): its job://runs/{runId} subscribers get resources/updated when the revision changes, and the run's
end is published to its job-completion channels.
Reconcile on boot. A server whose job store is shared reads it in the background once its registries exist,
for runs left pending, running or retrying by a recorded runner. On the runner's own host its pid decides (a
runner whose event loop is blocked misses heartbeats but is alive); on another host the store's TTL on its
heartbeat does. No process compares its clock with another's. A gone
runner's run ends interrupted (JOB_INTERRUPTED, its runner is gone) and, if it was running, its job's cleanup runs in that server (reason 'interrupt', or 'cancel' when a cancel was written first) on an instance
built for the run's input; a detached run its runner never took over ends failed with JOB_RUNNER_BOOT_FAILED,
without a cleanup. This server's own pid on a run older than the server belonged to an earlier process (a
restarted container's server is often the same pid), so that runner counts as gone. One process settles each run:
a new optional claimRun() (SQLite incr, Redis SET NX) decides, however many servers boot at once, and the
one that claims it judges it by its record as it is then, not as the listing found it. A run whose runner is alive is watched if it is detached, and left
alone if it is another live server's inline run. Runs written before runners were recorded are left alone. An
attempt that ends after another process ended its run (taking its runner for gone) keeps that end: the outcome
write reads the run first and leaves a finished one as it is. A process whose run another process ended aborts it
at its next read of the store (every 500 ms in a runner, every second in a server), so a runner taken for gone
(another host, its event loop blocked past the heartbeat's TTL) stops and runs its cleanup instead of running on
and retrying.
Inline and worker runs now record their runner too, and the server keeps one heartbeat key while it has active
runs (written before the run record, so a reconciling server never takes a fresh run for an orphan). A server killed
outright used to leave its runs running forever; the next server on the store now ends them interrupted with
their cleanup.
Refused at boot, with JobRunnerUnavailableError (JOB_RUNNER_UNAVAILABLE, with a remedy): a detached job on
an edge or browser runtime or a serverless deployment (getRuntimeContext()), and a detached job with execute
permissions, whose per-attempt check would run without the caller's credentials. Refused per run, same code: a
detached run on a server not started by bootstrap(), runStdio() or runUnixSocket() (create(), createDirect(), connect(), the generated CLI's in-process connect(), createForGraph(), a handler: re-running
its process would run the host program, and the generated CLI's <bin> job run would start a new run and runner
without end), or on a memory store.
New store methods (optional, like M14's cancel requests): touchRunner(runnerId, ttlSeconds), isRunnerAlive(runnerId) and claimRun(runId), on the memory, SQLite and Redis stores. A custom store without them
is judged by the runner's pid on its own host only.
What a detached runner gets. The server's environment (it boots the same providers, so this is the server's own
env policy; FRONTMCP_RUN_TASK_ID is removed so a task worker that starts a detached run does not start another task
worker), the server's argv and execArgv (without the inspector flags), FRONTMCP_RUN_JOB_ID (which it removes from its
own environment once read), and M03's owner tag. The run's input comes from the
store, where M14 already keeps it. Nothing of the caller crosses: no access token, request headers or session, so this.auth is empty in a detached attempt (hence the refusal of execute permissions). Documented in the catalog.
Design notes, where the code led away from the plan:
The runner boots the server's config, not createContainer().createContainer() builds providers only: no
flow registry, hooks or job registry. Running a job there would mean calling execute() outside jobs:execute-job,
so audit, metrics, quota and the job class's own hooks would not see detached attempts, which the flow-architecture
rule forbids. The runner boots the config in process the way createDirect() does (no HTTP, no onReady(), no
duties), as the task worker (__run-task) already does.
A detached run always answers at once. Waiting in the request for a run whose whole point is to outlive the
request (and the server) would tie the two back together; the run handle and job://runs/{runId} are the way to
follow it.
Reconcile runs in the background so a store with many orphans and slow cleanups does not hold the server's start.
The flag helpers the server reads (FRONTMCP_RUN_JOB_ID, the runner's config flag, JOB_WORKER_MARKER) live in front-mcp/detached-job.flag.ts, beside direct-only.flag.ts, so scope.instance and front-mcp reach no module
of the jobs feature in a browser bundle.
jobs.admission stays per process; each detached run is a process of its own, so admission does not bound how many
run at once (documented).
Workflow steps keep running in the workflow's process: a step whose job is 'worker' offloads its execute(), a 'detached' job runs inline as a step. Workflow runs record no runner, so reconcile leaves them alone (open below).
Bundle-size budgets raised by this PR's measured growth (numbers in "Bundle size" below). What grows: the runner
check and entry mark in bootstrap() / runStdio() / runUnixSocket() and their flag helpers, the jobs.runner
schema, the scope reading the mark, and the runner metadata token. Moving the check into the @FrontMcp decorator
alone would save about 280 bytes, but a runner started from an entry that calls FrontMcpInstance.bootstrap() itself
would then start a second server instead of running its run. The Vite initial chunk is unchanged.
Detached runs are allowed by entry, not refused by kind of in-process server. Only the three entries that hand
a runner over to its run mark the config they serve; every other way to build a server refuses detached runs. A
list of refused kinds missed the generated CLI (connect() in CLI mode, not marked direct-only) and createForGraph(), and would miss the next one.
Open: workflow runs left running by a crashed server are not reconciled yet; a run's this.log() lines reach the
store with its outcome (as before), not with each 500 ms flush. A host is its hostname, as for the CLI task workers: two
containers that share a hostname and a store (an explicit hostname: on scaled replicas) judge each other's runners by
pids they cannot see. Across hosts, a runner whose event loop blocks past the 5 s heartbeat TTL is taken for gone.
User-facing change
What changed:
New option @FrontMcp({ jobs: { runner } }) and @Job({ runner }) ('inline' | 'worker' | 'detached'; also on job()).
New root exports: JOB_WORKER_MARKER, the type JobRunner and JobRunnerInfo, the errors JobRunnerUnavailableError (JOB_RUNNER_UNAVAILABLE) and JobRunnerBootError (JOB_RUNNER_BOOT_FAILED).
Run records gain runner and scopeId; JobStateStore gains the optional touchRunner(), isRunnerAlive() and claimRun(); JobExecutionManager gains reconcile() and runDetached() and the options runner, findJob, detachedUnavailable, spawnDetached.
JobInterruptedError takes an optional reason; its message for a run whose runner died reads Run "<id>" was interrupted: its runner is gone.
A detached runner process: the server's command with FRONTMCP_RUN_JOB_ID=<runId>, FRONTMCP_OWNER=frontmcp-job:<server pid>
and a trailing --frontmcp-owner=frontmcp-job:<server pid>.
Before → after:
Default unchanged: every job runs inline unless it or jobs.runner says otherwise.
A server that boots on a shared job store (jobs.store, the top-level sqlite or redis): before, runs left running by a crashed server stayed running; after, they end interrupted (their cleanup runs in the booting
server) once their runner is gone, and a live detached run is watched.
A server with active inline runs on a shared store writes a heartbeat key every second (<prefix>runner:<id>,
5 s TTL), and its run records name it as their runner.
An active run on a shared store whose record another process ended is aborted at its next read of the store
(before, it ran on and its attempt's outcome was dropped).
The JOB_RUNNER_UNAVAILABLE message for a server that cannot start detached runs now reads this server was not started by an entry a detached process can run again (bootstrap(), runStdio(), runUnixSocket() or @FrontMcp), as an in-process server (create(), createDirect(), connect(), the generated CLI) is not.
this.offload()-style worker resources: their ProviderNotAvailableError message is unchanged.
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): jobs (runners, detached runs, reconcile, error codes), workflows (runners
of steps), server configuration (jobs.runner), offload / CPU work (jobs on the worker runner), production checklist, @frontmcp/utils process helpers (reapOrphans(JOB_WORKER_MARKER)).
Skills catalog entries updated:frontmcp-development/references/create-job.md (the runner field, a Runners
section, patterns, checklist, troubleshooting), the new example frontmcp-development/examples/create-job/detached-export-job.md, frontmcp-development/references/create-workflow.md, frontmcp-development/references/offload-cpu-work.md, frontmcp-development/SKILL.md, frontmcp-production-readiness/references/common-checklist.md, and skills-manifest.json (regenerated).
Tests
Red first: the store, flush, runner and detached specs, the worker-job spec and the boot-refusal test were written
before the code and failed (modules missing, then assertions). The two review fixes were red first too (a live local
runner without a heartbeat was interrupted; a run another process ended was overwritten by its attempt), and so was
the store disposal on a refused boot. The e2e cases for cancel and reconcile failed until the runner kept its event
loop alive (its process exited mid-run). The cycle-2 review fixes were each red first: runUnixSocket() served on its
socket under FRONTMCP_RUN_JOB_ID; a CLI-mode server spawned a runner; the runner kept FRONTMCP_RUN_JOB_ID, passed --inspect-brk on and connected a service channel; reconcile left a run with this server's pid from before it started running, and ended a run by its stale listing (failed, no cleanup); a runner whose run another process ended ran
on; a worker job's 200 progress reports made 200 store writes.
Unit (libs/sdk):
job/runner/__tests__/run-flusher.spec.ts (fake timers, 7): nothing before the first tick, then only the latest
value, at most once per 500 ms; no write while one is in flight, the newest value after it; flush() and stop(); a failed write's value kept for the next tick; the heartbeat written before hold() resolves, renewed
every second while held, one beat for all holders, expiring once released; a store without heartbeats.
job/runner/__tests__/job-runner.spec.ts (15): runner precedence; @Job({ runner }) accepted and refused with
its message; boot refusals on serverless, edge and browser runtimes with remedy and code, for jobs.runner and
not for a job that sets its own, and for execute permissions (read/delete rules allowed); the runner command
(execPath, execArgv, entry, args, older owner tag dropped), the inspector flags left out (+1), refused without an
entry; FRONTMCP_RUN_JOB_ID; a real spawnDetachedRunner() child in its own process group with the run id, FRONTMCP_OWNER, the trailing owner tag
and no FRONTMCP_RUN_TASK_ID.
job/__tests__/job-detached.spec.ts (22, a real SQLite store, the runner entry booted in this process; every
real spawn replaced by a stand-in): a
detached run answers at once, takes its runner's pid, lands its progress and then its result after the starting
server was disposed, read by a new server; a new server reads job://runs/{runId}, cancels it, the runner runs
the cleanup and the watching server publishes the cancelled completion; at most two progress writes for 200
reports; an outcome another process wrote is kept; a spawn error ends the run failed with JOB_RUNNER_BOOT_FAILED and one notification; in-process refusal with its remedy; a serverless boot fails with JOB_RUNNER_UNAVAILABLE and closes the job store; the runner entry writes a typed boot failure, leaves unknown and
finished runs alone, fails a run whose job is gone; reconcile interrupts a dead runner's run and runs its cleanup
once across three concurrent servers, fails a never-started detached run without cleanup, judges another host's
runners by heartbeat and watches the live one to its completion, keeps a local runner whose heartbeat lapsed alive
while its pid runs, and leaves a live server's inline runs and pre-runner records alone. Added by the review: a
CLI-mode server refuses a detached run and spawns nothing; a runner stops within its poll once another process
ended its run, which keeps that end; runUnixSocket() under FRONTMCP_RUN_JOB_ID runs the run and exits without
creating its socket; the runner takes FRONTMCP_RUN_JOB_ID out of its environment and connects no service
channel; reconcile judges an orphan by its current record (a run listed pending but running ends interrupted
with its cleanup) and ends a run whose runner had this server's pid before the server started.
offload/__tests__/worker-jobs.spec.ts (7): the worker-side runner runs execute() with input and attempt and
answers output, logs and progress; respond(); this.get() refused naming the job; a function job; in a server, execute() handed to the pool with the job's module, key and signal, its logs and progress kept on the run; jobs.runner: 'worker' for a job that sets none; the worker's output checked against outputSchema; 200 progress
reports from the worker make at most two store writes, the last value kept before the outcome.
offload/__tests__/offload-pool.spec.ts (+2): a real worker thread runs a registered worker job with its progress
and log lines; a job its module did not register is refused.
job/store/__tests__/job-store.parity.spec.ts (+6): heartbeats live and lapse by the store's TTL, one caller claims
a run, on memory, SQLite and Redis; both kept across SQLite stores on one file.
common/metadata/__tests__/jobs-config-schema.spec.ts (+4): jobs.runner kept, refused with its message.
E2E:apps/e2e/demo-e2e-jobs/e2e/jobs-detached.e2e.spec.ts against src/main.detached.ts (top-level SQLite, jobs.runner: 'detached'), every server a real process started by TestServer, polled with deadlines:
a run finishes after its server was killed with SIGKILL; a new instance reads job://runs/{runId} and gets the
result, whose pid is the runner's, not the server's; the runner exits;
a new instance cancels a run another one started (that one stopped gracefully, the run kept going); the runner
runs the cleanup (its pid in the events file) and exits;
a run whose runner was killed (after its server stopped) ends interrupted (its runner is gone) when the next
server boots, and its cleanup runs in that server;
a runner: 'worker' job runs off the main thread of the server. apps/e2e/demo-e2e-dts-consumer/fixture/job-runners-must-compile.ts types @Job({ runner }), jobs.runner, JobRunner, JobRunnerInfo, JOB_WORKER_MARKER with reapOrphans, the runner errors and the new store methods, and
refuses an unknown runner in both places.
Ran (on 3a85ab7a9; origin/feat/m14-durable-jobs-store moved to 94ef00b01 meanwhile and was not merged):
npx jest --maxWorkers=50% in libs/sdk: 631 suites, 8772 tests passed. nx test skills: 249 passed.
nx test demo-e2e-jobs: 6 suites, 53 passed; nx test demo-e2e-dts-consumer: 28 passed; nx test demo-e2e-bundle-size: 12 passed (sizes above).
nx affected -t lint build --base=origin/feat/m14-durable-jobs-store (non-e2e projects, before the review fixes):
20 projects pass; nx run-many -t lint -p sdk skills after them: 0 errors, and no warning in a changed file that
the base did not have. tsc --noEmit -p libs/sdk/tsconfig.spec.json: no errors; tsc --noEmit for the jobs e2e
app's app and e2e configs: none in its files. scripts/fix-unused-imports.mjs 3a85ab7a9 and Prettier: clean.
After the cycle-2 review fixes: libs/sdk jest (--maxWorkers=50%): 631 suites, 8781 tests passed; nx test skills: 249 passed (manifest regenerated, unchanged); nx test demo-e2e-jobs: 6 suites, 53 passed; nx test demo-e2e-dts-consumer: 28 passed; nx test demo-e2e-local-runtime: 5 suites, 8 passed; nx test demo-e2e-bundle-size: 12 passed (sizes above); nx run-many -t lint -p sdk skills: 0 errors; tsc --noEmit for libs/sdk/tsconfig.spec.json and tsconfig.lib.json: no errors.
Jest's "A worker process has failed to exit gracefully" note comes from M14's job/__tests__/job-durability.spec.ts
and shows on the base (3a85ab7a9) too; none of this PR's specs causes it.
Bundle size
The runner option schema, the detached-run handoff in bootstrap()/runStdio()/runUnixSocket() and the serving-entry mark reach the browser bundle; the runner itself stays out. Measured against #1023's head (on today's main): create() + one tool 1,332,923 → 1,333,845 bytes minified (+922), create() + WebMcpPlugin + one tool 1,340,102 → 1,341,024 (+922). The two browser budgets move up by exactly that (1,333,877 → 1,334,799 and 1,340,744 → 1,341,666).
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Jobs can now run inline, in a worker thread, or in a detached process, configured per job or as a server default.
Detached jobs can continue after the initiating server shuts down. With shared storage, another server can access or cancel runs, and interrupted runs are handled when a server restarts.
Worker and detached jobs support progress reporting and cleanup.
Documentation
Updated job guides with runner options, configuration guidance, constraints, and a detached export example.
…s that outlives the server
jobs.runner and @job({ runner }) pick where a job's attempts run. 'worker' hands execute() to the
offload pool while the jobs:execute-job flow stays on the main thread. 'detached' starts a
spawnOwned process that runs the server's entry again, boots its config with no transport, takes
the run over (pid and heartbeat in the store), writes its progress every 500 ms at most and
reads cancels every 500 ms. A server reconciles the store on boot: a run whose runner is gone
ends interrupted with its cleanup (once across processes), a detached run never taken over
fails with JOB_RUNNER_BOOT_FAILED, and live detached runs are watched until they end. Detached
jobs are refused at boot on edge, browser and serverless runtimes and with execute permissions,
and per run on in-process servers and memory stores.
… runs by their current record
- runUnixSocket() hands a detached runner over to its run; a socket daemon (the SEA daemon's socket
mode, a hand-written socket entry) started a second server instead.
- Only a server started by bootstrap(), runStdio() or runUnixSocket() (or @FrontMcp) starts detached
runs. The generated CLI (connect() in CLI mode) accepted them, and its runner re-ran `<bin> job run`,
which started a new detached run and another runner, without end.
- The runner takes FRONTMCP_RUN_JOB_ID out of its environment (a server its job starts booted as a
runner too), leaves --inspect, --inspect-brk and --inspect-wait out of its command (a runner waited
for a debugger forever), and connects no service channel (a second consumer of the server's services).
- Reconcile takes this server's own pid on a run older than the server for gone (a restarted
container's inline runs stayed running forever), and judges an orphan by its record when it ends it,
not by the listing.
- A run another process ended is aborted at the next read of the store, so a runner taken for gone
stops instead of running on and retrying.
- A worker job's progress is kept as the latest value every 500 ms at most, before its outcome; each
report was a store write with no backpressure.
…#1023
The runner option schema, the detached-run handoff in bootstrap()/runStdio()/runUnixSocket() and the serving-entry mark reach the browser bundle: both measured bundles grow by 922 bytes minified over #1023's head. The two budgets move up by exactly that.
The SDK adds inline, worker, and detached job runners. Worker jobs execute through the offload pool. Detached jobs run in separate processes and use shared state for progress, cancellation, runner liveness, and orphan reconciliation. Tests, examples, and guides cover the runner APIs and execution paths.

Summary
Runner contracts and registration libs/sdk/src/common/metadata/*, libs/sdk/src/common/decorators/job.decorator.ts, libs/sdk/src/job/store/job-state.interface.ts, libs/sdk/src/errors/job.errors.ts, libs/sdk/src/index.ts, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-dts-consumer/*
Job and server metadata accept inline, worker, or detached runner settings. Job decorators register worker job sources. Run records and state-store contracts expose runner metadata and optional heartbeat and claim methods. The strict declaration consumer fixture checks these APIs and invalid runner values.
The job flow selects worker execution when configured. The offload pool sends job tasks, receives logs and progress, and returns worker output. Tests cover worker execution, errors, progress, and output validation; the bundle-size budgets are updated.
Detached runner lifecycle and persistence libs/sdk/src/job/execution/job-execution.manager.ts, libs/sdk/src/job/runner/*, libs/sdk/src/job/store/*, libs/sdk/src/job/job-scope.helper.ts, libs/sdk/src/job/job-attempt.ts
The execution manager starts detached processes, tracks runner liveness, watches run state, and reconciles orphaned runs. Stores implement heartbeat and exclusive claim operations. Progress writes are throttled, and cleanup runs with its configured timeout or a 3,000 ms default.
Server integration and validation libs/sdk/src/front-mcp/*, libs/sdk/src/scope/scope.instance.ts, libs/sdk/src/job/__tests__/job-detached.spec.ts, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-jobs/*, libs/skills/catalog/*
Server entry points route detached invocations to the worker and mark regular server and worker scopes. Tests and the demo cover restart survival, cross-server cancellation, interruption cleanup, and worker execution. Documentation adds runner guidance, examples, and production-readiness checks.

In multi-host deployments that share a store, a long synchronous job can be wrongly marked interrupted. Its cleanup may then run while the job is still working. Lengthen the cross-host liveness window or avoid running cleanup on a lapsed heartbeat alone before merging.

This test calls spawnDetachedRunner. That call starts a real detached Node process and checks its process group with ps. The repository rule reserves libs/<package>/src/**/__tests__/*.spec.ts for unit tests. Specs that spawn subprocesses belong under apps/e2e/demo-e2e-<feature>/e2e/. Move this case into apps/e2e/demo-e2e-jobs/e2e/ (for example, jobs-detached.e2e.spec.ts). Keep the pure detachedRunnerCommand tests here.
As per coding guidelines: "E2E specs that spawn subprocesses, hit real ports, or drive the compiled CLI bin live in their own monorepo apps under apps/e2e/."

Move the real-subprocess test that calls spawnDetachedRunner and verifies its
process group into the jobs end-to-end test suite. Keep the pure
detachedRunnerCommand tests in the unit spec, and preserve the subprocess test’s
existing assertions in its new end-to-end location.

…loop is not taken for a gone runner
A server on another host judged a runner gone once its heartbeat was 5 s
old, but the heartbeat is renewed on the runner's own event loop, so a job
that blocked it for more than 5 s had its run ended and its cleanup run
elsewhere while it still worked. The heartbeat now lasts 30 s, renewed every
second, as a pod's HA heartbeat does.
Answer to the review-body finding of the review on 3893bd5:
Move the real-subprocess test in job-runner.spec.ts to apps/e2e/: not changed. The case spawns plain Node on a throwaway script, with no compiled artefact and no build dependency, as the libs/utils process specs do for spawnOwned; it checks what spawnDetachedRunner hands its child (arguments, owner tag, scrubbed task id, process group), which the public API does not expose. The detached path end to end, through a server, is in apps/e2e/demo-e2e-jobs/e2e/jobs-detached.e2e.spec.ts.
Local runs on 9d0d09a: SDK job suites 233/233, nx test skills 249/249, nx test demo-e2e-jobs 53/53.
…-mode server
Test-only fix. The test timed out in CI at Jest's 5 s default: the first
CLI-mode server of a run imports the CLI-only modules, which under coverage
and --no-sparkplug took 3.7 s locally and longer on CI. It now has 30 s.
CI on 27c63a9 failed "a detached run › is refused by a CLI-mode server" in Unit Tests chunk 0 (as on #1025): a 5 s Jest timeout. The first CLI-mode server of a run imports the CLI-only modules; with CI's flags (--coverage, node --no-sparkplug, no cache) that test took 3,694 ms locally instead of 128 ms, and longer on CI's shared runners. Test-only fix in this PR: the test now has a 30 s timeout. Merged feat/m21-shared-server-run (7b3ac5f) in 3c10c23.
…d set up one guard for lazy apps loading at once
- completion:complete gets the checkAppLoaded stage prompts:get-prompt and
resources:read-resource have, so a completion whose app failed to load is
answered LAZY_APP_LOAD_FAILED instead of an empty completion.
- Scope.checkLateApp runs the late guard setup one app at a time: two lazy
apps loading together each created a guard manager, the second replacing
the first (and, on Redis, leaking its connection).
- With throttle.enabled false, a lazy app's load no longer replaces the
publicAccess guard startup set up, which reset the anonymous rate limit.
- Docs: the node example runs dist/node/<name>.bundle.js; an off enabled
source keeps a lazy app unimported once the manifest lists it, while
development without one imports it unless enabled is false.
- Bundle budgets re-fitted to the measured growth over #1024's head.
…eir first call (#1025)
* feat(sdk): lazy apps imported on their first call, listed from frontmcp.manifest.json until then
A lazy app ({ name, lazy: () => import('./billing.app'), enabled? }) is listed from the build manifest
through the normal list flows without importing it. A call to one of its entries imports and initializes
it once, before the request's flow collects its hooks, then runs the app's own entry through the normal
flow. A stale manifest is replaced by the loaded entries with list_changed; a failed import is a typed,
retryable LAZY_APP_LOAD_FAILED; production without a manifest does not start; development without one
imports lazy apps at startup.
* test(sdk,e2e): cover lazy apps in splitByApp, a built bundle, the auth stages and the answer budget
Also fit the browser bundle budgets to the lazy app code: create() + one tool grows 1,330,324 -> 1,333,826
bytes (+3,502) and create() + WebMcpPlugin + one tool 1,337,501 -> 1,341,005 (+3,504) over the parent's head.
* test(e2e): stop the built lazy-app server when the client cannot connect
* fix(sdk): keep a lazy app's hooks to its own calls, and undo a failed load
- A lazy app cannot have hooks that reach past its own calls, which would guard and
shape nothing until it is imported: a plugin with scope 'server' (refused before the
app initializes), a hook with appliesTo 'all-apps', or a hook on a flow other than the
four entry call flows (a list hook). Nor duties, which start with the server, nor
entries with featureFlag or codecall metadata, which the feature-flag and CodeCall
plugins read from the placeholder (CodeCall's policy judged a tool that opted out by
its placeholder and then ran the loaded tool).
- A failed load is undone: the hooks it registered are unregistered
(HookRegistry.removeHooks), its providers get onShutdown() and are disposed, and its
adapters are disposed. Configuration errors are answered until a restart; any other
failure is retried by the next call, instead of deciding by a scope-wide hook count.
- An import that resolves after the server began shutting down does not start the app.
- A lazy app's id must be no other app's (DuplicateAppIdError).
* test(codecall,e2e): a lazy app's opted-out tool never runs through CodeCall; budgets fit the fix
- codecall-lazy-app.flow.spec.ts: the manifest of a lazy app whose tool declares codecall
is not built, and with a manifest from before the opt-out codecall:execute's callTool is
refused without running the tool (it ran before the fix).
- official-plugins.md: no featureFlag or codecall on a lazy app's entries, and what
CodeCall's filters see before a lazy app loads.
- The browser bundle budgets rise by the fix's 580 bytes, to the PR's measured growth.
* test(e2e): fit the browser bundle budgets to lazy apps on top of #1024
The lazy app kind, its placeholders and the loader ship in the browser build, where lazy imports split code: create() + one tool grows by 4,084 bytes minified, create() + WebMcpPlugin + one tool by 4,082, and the Vite initial chunk by 860, all over #1024's head. The three budgets move up by exactly that.
* fix(sdk): fail a lazy app's completion like its other first calls, and set up one guard for lazy apps loading at once
* docs(skills): say plainly that an off enabled source does not stop a lazy app's import in development

What and why
Proposal item 2.2 (b): durable jobs on a local store, part II, runners. A job's attempts always ran on the server's
event loop. A CPU-heavy job blocked every other call, and a run, background or not, lived and died with the server's
process: a restart, a deploy or a crash left it
interrupted(after a graceful shutdown) orrunningforever (aftera crash), and no other server could take it over.
What this PR changes:
jobs.runnerand@Job({ runner }):'inline' | 'worker' | 'detached'. The job's own runner, else theserver's, else
'inline'. Both are checked by Zod (runner must be 'inline', 'worker' or 'detached',jobs.runner must be ...).'worker'runs the job'sexecute()in a worker thread of M11's offload pool. Only theexecutestage ofjobs:execute-jobmoves: permissions, admission, the timeout, cleanupand the run record stay on the main thread,as for a
worker: trueresource.@Job(andjob()) records the module that declares the job, from the call stackas
@Resourcedoes, and the worker imports it, finds the job in a registry its own copy of the SDK filled while themodule loaded, builds it with no DI container (
this.get()throwsProviderNotAvailableErrornaming the job) andruns it. Its
this.progress()reaches the run through a newprogressmessage of the pool, itsthis.log()linescome back with the result; the latest progress is kept on the run every 500 ms at most, and before the outcome, however
often the worker reports. A timeout, a cancel or a shutdown terminates the worker, so the job really stops. A bundle
that inlines
@frontmcp/sdkis refused withInvalidOffloadCallError, as for resources.'detached'runs the run in a process of its own that outlives the server:execute_jobanswers at once with{ runId, state: 'pending', uri }, whateverbackgroundsays. The serverwrites a 60 s boot heartbeat for the runner, starts it with
spawnOwnedunder the new exported markerJOB_WORKER_MARKER('frontmcp-job'),detachedinto a process group of its own (so stopping the server's groupspares it),
stdio: 'ignore',windowsHide, then writes the run with that process as its runner(
runner: { kind, id, pid, hostname }, and the run'sscopeId).process.execPath, itsexecArgv(so atsxloader carries over;--inspect,--inspect-brkand--inspect-waitare left out, so a runner never waits for a debugger), its entryand arguments (an older
--frontmcp-ownertag dropped), withFRONTMCP_RUN_JOB_IDset.FrontMcpInstance.bootstrap(),runStdio()andrunUnixSocket()(so@FrontMcpand the socket daemons too) seeit and run the run instead of serving: the config is booted in process (no transport, no
onReady(), no servicechannel connection), the run goes through the job execution manager of the scope that started it, its attempts
through the same
jobs:execute-jobflow, and the process exits. The runner takesFRONTMCP_RUN_JOB_IDout of itsenvironment first, so a FrontMCP server its job starts does not boot as a runner too.
a 5 s TTL kept by the store), writes the progress it reports every 500 ms at most (the latest value, never two
writes at once, a failed write retried on the next tick, the pending progress flushed before the attempt's outcome
is written), and reads the store for a cancel every 500 ms. State changes are written at once. All writes go
through M14's per-run serialization, and M14's cancel-wins rule decides the outcome. A ref'd timer keeps the
process alive while the run lasts (the run's own timers are unref'd, and a job may only await its signal).
failedwithJobRunnerBootError(JOB_RUNNER_BOOT_FAILED, with a remedy) naming the cause; so does one whose server no longerhas the job, and a server whose spawn emits
error. SIGTERM or SIGINT interrupts the runner's run: its cleanup runsand it ends
interrupted.get_job_statusandjob://runs/{runId}for it, andcancel_jobwrites the cancel to the store as before; the runner aborts within500 ms and runs the job's
cleanupitself. A server watches every detached run it started or found alive (one reada second): its
job://runs/{runId}subscribers getresources/updatedwhen the revision changes, and the run'send is published to its
job-completionchannels.for runs left
pending, runningorretryingby a recorded runner. On the runner's own host its pid decides (arunner whose event loop is blocked misses heartbeats but is alive); on another host the store's TTL on its
heartbeat does. No process compares its clock with another's. A gone
runner's run ends
interrupted(JOB_INTERRUPTED,its runner is gone) and, if it was running, its job'scleanupruns in that server (reason'interrupt', or'cancel'when a cancel was written first) on an instancebuilt for the run's input; a detached run its runner never took over ends
failedwithJOB_RUNNER_BOOT_FAILED,without a cleanup. This server's own pid on a run older than the server belonged to an earlier process (a
restarted container's server is often the same pid), so that runner counts as gone. One process settles each run:
a new optional
claimRun()(SQLiteincr, RedisSET NX) decides, however many servers boot at once, and theone that claims it judges it by its record as it is then, not as the listing found it.
(another host, its event loop blocked past the heartbeat's TTL) stops and runs its cleanup instead of running on
and retrying.
runs (written before the run record, so a reconciling server never takes a fresh run for an orphan). A server killed
outright used to leave its runs
runningforever; the next server on the store now ends theminterruptedwiththeir cleanup.
JobRunnerUnavailableError(JOB_RUNNER_UNAVAILABLE, with a remedy): a detached job onan edge or browser runtime or a serverless deployment (
getRuntimeContext()), and a detached job withexecutepermissions, whose per-attempt check would run without the caller's credentials. Refused per run, same code: a
detached run on a server not started by
bootstrap(),runStdio()orrunUnixSocket()(create(),createDirect(),connect(), the generated CLI's in-processconnect(),createForGraph(), a handler: re-runningits process would run the host program, and the generated CLI's
<bin> job runwould start a new run and runnerwithout end), or on a memory store.
touchRunner(runnerId, ttlSeconds),isRunnerAlive(runnerId)andclaimRun(runId), on the memory, SQLite and Redis stores. A custom store without themis judged by the runner's pid on its own host only.
What a detached runner gets. The server's environment (it boots the same providers, so this is the server's own
env policy;
FRONTMCP_RUN_TASK_IDis removed so a task worker that starts a detached run does not start another taskworker), the server's argv and
execArgv(without the inspector flags),FRONTMCP_RUN_JOB_ID(which it removes from itsown environment once read), and M03's owner tag. The run's input comes from the
store, where M14 already keeps it. Nothing of the caller crosses: no access token, request headers or session, so
this.authis empty in a detached attempt (hence the refusal ofexecutepermissions). Documented in the catalog.Design notes, where the code led away from the plan:
createContainer().createContainer()builds providers only: noflow registry, hooks or job registry. Running a job there would mean calling
execute()outsidejobs:execute-job,so audit, metrics, quota and the job class's own hooks would not see detached attempts, which the flow-architecture
rule forbids. The runner boots the config in process the way
createDirect()does (no HTTP, noonReady(), noduties), as the task worker (
__run-task) already does.request (and the server) would tie the two back together; the run handle and
job://runs/{runId}are the way tofollow it.

jobs.admissionstays per process; each detached run is a process of its own, so admission does not bound how manyrun at once (documented).
'worker'offloads itsexecute(), a'detached'job runs inline as a step. Workflow runs record no runner, so reconcile leaves them alone (open below).check and entry mark in
bootstrap()/runStdio()/runUnixSocket()and their flag helpers, thejobs.runnerschema, the scope reading the mark, and the

list of refused kinds missed the generated CLI (
connect()in CLI mode, not marked direct-only) andcreateForGraph(), and would miss the next one.Open: workflow runs left
runningby a crashed server are not reconciled yet; a run'sthis.log()lines reach thestore with its outcome (as before), not with each 500 ms flush. A host is its hostname, as for the CLI task workers: two
containers that share a hostname and a store (an explicit
hostname:on scaled replicas) judge each other's runners bypids they cannot see. Across hosts, a runner whose event loop blocks past the 5 s heartbeat TTL is taken for gone.

Red first: the store, flush, runner and detached specs, the worker-job spec and the boot-refusal test were written
before the code and failed (modules missing, then assertions). The two review fixes were red first too (a live local

the store disposal on a refused boot. The e2e cases for cancel and reconcile failed until the runner kept its event
