fix(plugins): import @frontmcp/utils from plugin-cache, plugin-dashboard and edge instead of bundling it - #1002
Follow-up to #953. @frontmcp/plugin-cache, @frontmcp/plugin-dashboard and @frontmcp/edge bundled @frontmcp/utils
into their CommonJS and ESM builds. Their esbuild external lists named @frontmcp/sdk but not @frontmcp/utils, and thirdParty: false keeps npm packages out of a bundle, not workspace libraries.
The bundled code imported utils' own dependencies, which these packages don't declare, so Node resolved whatever
copy sat at the top of the project's node_modules. In 1.10.9 that broke all three under Enclave 2.16
(ERR_PACKAGE_PATH_NOT_EXPORTED on @enclave-vm/ast/redos). fix(plugins,edge): declare @enclave-vm/ast ^2.17.0 where the bundled ReDoS check imports it #953 patched that one package by declaring it.
A server using them loaded a second copy of utils' code, next to the one the SDK loads.
Undeclared bare imports in the packed output on main, found by the new e2e:
project.json of the three packages:@frontmcp/utils is added to the external list of build-cjs and build-esm.
package.json:
plugin-dashboard and edge declare @frontmcp/utils in dependencies at the internal version (1.10.16), like
their other internal dependencies. plugin-cache already declared it.
plugin-cache keeps its optional @vercel/kv peer. It no longer imports @vercel/kv itself, but utils loads it for
the Vercel KV store, and the peer is what tells users to install it.
Browser builds
None of the three packages has a browser build. Each ships only the Node-platform CommonJS and ESM builds, so there is
nothing to change there:
The repo's browser builds (the SDK's build-browser, @frontmcp/react, @frontmcp/plugin-webmcp) already keep @frontmcp/utils external, and none of them bundles these three packages.
For Workers, importing is the better choice. edge used to bake in utils as resolved under Node conditions. Now a
Worker bundler resolves @frontmcp/utils through its imports map, where the worker condition comes first and
points at the same implementations (scripts/worker-export-conditions.test.mjs guards this). The Worker bundle then
carries one copy of utils, shared with the SDK.
A browser bundler importing these packages now gets utils' browser implementations instead of the Node ones.
Release tooling
No change needed:
nx release version (updateDependents: "always") and scripts/normalize-internal-versions.mjs rewrite every @frontmcp/* entry in a manifest. A dry run of nx release version 1.10.99 and normalize-internal-versions.mjs 1.10.99 --check both bump the new @frontmcp/utils pins in plugin-dashboard and edge.
scripts/bump-synchronized-versions.mjs rewrites every synchronized library found in a manifest, and utils is one.
publish-release.yml publishes utils in the same release, as it already must for the SDK and plugin-cache.
Before and after
The main column is origin/main's build of the three packages; every other package is the same build in both.

ioredis is preloaded for plugin-cache: both versions require it on load, and it took 20–85 ms on its own

User-facing change
What changed:@frontmcp/plugin-cache, @frontmcp/plugin-dashboard and @frontmcp/edge depend on @frontmcp/utils (at the same exact version) and import it, instead of bundling a copy. They no longer depend on @enclave-vm/ast.
Before → after:
Install:plugin-dashboard and edge now install @frontmcp/utils, which any project using the SDK already
has. @enclave-vm/ast is no longer a direct dependency of the three packages; @frontmcp/utils still brings it.
Other versions at the top level: a project that keeps another version of one of utils' dependencies at the top
of node_modules (for example @enclave-vm/ast 2.16) no longer affects these packages.
Duplicate code: a server using them loads one copy of utils instead of two, and their published JavaScript is
3 to 11 times smaller (see the table above).
APIs: no API, option, error or output changes.
frontmcp.dev pages affected (if known): none expected, unless the install notes for the cache plugin, the
dashboard plugin or edge list their dependencies.
Skills catalog entries updated: none. No catalog entry describes what these packages bundle. The one dependency it
mentions, edge's dependency on @frontmcp/plugin-skilled-openapi, is unchanged.
Tests
New e2e app, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-published-imports. It is tagged type:e2e, so CI's e2e matrix runs it, and its test
target depends on the three packages' builds.
published-imports.e2e.spec.ts:npm packs each package, extracts the tarball and parses every published .js
and .mjs with the TypeScript parser. For each package it checks that:
the package declares @frontmcp/utils at its own version;
both builds import @frontmcp/utils;
no function or class is defined under the name of a @frontmcp/utils export, which would mean bundled utils code.
Names the package's own sources define don't count, so a local helper such as escapeHtml passes, and a control
checks that the remaining names still match definitions in utils' own build. The check finds 74 to 78 bundled
utils functions in each published 1.10.16 package. It also catches a tree-shaken copy, such as getCrypto and randomUUID in edge, which the import check alone misses;
every bare import is a declared dependency, peer or optional dependency. Bare imports here are import and export
declarations, import(), require() and esbuild's __require. Text inside template literals, such as the
dashboard page's browser imports, isn't code and isn't flagged.
enclave-2-16-top-level.e2e.spec.ts:
packs the three packages and every @frontmcp/* package npm installs with them;
runs npm install in a fresh project whose package.json pins @enclave-vm/ast2.16.0, and checks that 2.16.0
is at the top level;
loads each package with require and with import.
It fetches third-party packages from the npm registry. npm install and each load have their own timeouts, because
a synchronous child process blocks Jest's. The whole app ran in 16 to 80 s locally with a warm npm cache, depending
on machine load.
With @enclave-vm/ast removed but utils still bundled: the load spec failed 6 of 7, with the 1.10.9 error: ERR_PACKAGE_PATH_NOT_EXPORTED: Package subpath './redos' is not defined by "exports" in …/node_modules/@enclave-vm/ast/package.json imported from …/node_modules/@frontmcp/plugin-cache/esm/index.mjs.
With utils external: 19 of 19 pass.
Ran:
Lint and build of plugin-cache, plugin-dashboard, edge, plugin-codecall and plugins: pass, with 0
errors. The warnings were there before.
Unit tests:plugin-cache 202, plugin-dashboard 226, edge 72 and plugin-codecall 1,208, all passing.
E2E:demo-e2e-published-imports 19, demo-e2e-cache 14, demo-e2e-dashboard 12, demo-e2e-bundle-size 10, demo-e2e-dts-consumer 11 and demo-e2e-cloudflare 16, all passing. demo-e2e-cloudflare skips 5, in the managed
edge spec, which was skipped before.
node --test scripts/*.test.mjs, which includes the Worker export-condition tests: 84 pass.
Checks:normalize-internal-versions.mjs --check, fix-unused-imports.mjs and prettier are clean.

Walkthrough
The PR changes three package manifests and their CommonJS and ESM build settings to use @frontmcp/utils. It adds a Jest E2E project that inspects packed package artifacts and tests loading with @enclave-vm/ast 2.16.0 at the top level.
Changes: Utils externalization and published-package checks
The three packages replace their direct @enclave-vm/ast dependency with @frontmcp/utils where applicable, and externalize @frontmcp/utils in their CommonJS and ESM builds.
Published package discovery and packing apps/e2e/demo-e2e-published-imports/e2e/helpers/published-package.ts
Helpers locate built packages, pack and read their artifacts, and compute the transitive closure of internal dependencies and non-optional peers.
Published JavaScript inspection apps/e2e/demo-e2e-published-imports/e2e/helpers/published-package.ts
Helpers parse module imports and exports, identify source and published definitions, and detect undeclared package imports.
Published package E2E tests and project setup apps/e2e/demo-e2e-published-imports/e2e/*, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-published-imports/jest.e2e.config.ts, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-published-imports/project.json, apps/e2e/demo-e2e-published-imports/tsconfig*.json
The tests check @frontmcp/utils metadata, imports, and definitions in packed packages. A separate test installs packages with @enclave-vm/ast 2.16.0 at the top level and checks CommonJS and ESM loading. The project adds Jest and TypeScript configuration.
agentfront/frontmcp#953: This PR removes the direct @enclave-vm/ast dependency added by #953 and tests package loading with version 2.16.0 at the top level.

Explanation
PR #956 requires externalizing @frontmcp/utils from the CommonJS and ESM builds of @frontmcp/plugin-cache, @frontmcp/plugin-dashboard, and @frontmcp/edge. The three project.json files add this external. The package manifests declare @frontmcp/utils at the internal version where required and remove the direct @enclave-vm/ast dependency. The added published-imports E2E tests check for bundled utils code and undeclared bare imports. The enclave-2-16 test checks import and require loading with @enclave-vm/ast 2.16.0 at the top level. The PR reports passing relevant unit, E2E, bundle-size, and Worker export-condition tests. The PR also documents that these packages have no browser build and that existing browser and Worker resolution does not require a change.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The changes remain within PR #956. The new E2E project and helper logic directly verify the issue acceptance criteria. Build configuration and manifest changes directly implement the requested dependency externalization and declaration changes. The reported yarn.lock update supports the manifest changes; its contents are excluded from review by the supplied ignored-files rule, but no out-of-scope behavior is established. No unrelated product API or runtime feature changes are identified.

Bring this project within the E2E project contract, or move its artifact checks out of apps/e2e/.
The apps/e2e/** path instruction says each E2E project boots a FrontMCP server from src/main.ts and exercises it through the @frontmcp/testing MCP client harness. This project has no src/main.ts, and none of its files reference @frontmcp/testing or McpClient. Its specs pack the published packages, inspect their JavaScript, and load them in child processes. The existing exception for bundle tests covers demo-e2e-bundle-size only. Either add a server-backed E2E path that uses the harness, or move the artifact checks out of apps/e2e/. Moving them requires updating the WORKSPACE path in e2e/helpers/published-package.ts, which currently resolves five levels above that file.

Include private @frontmcp/utils definitions in the no-bundling scan.
The scan only uses names exported by @frontmcp/utils. A bundled private definition such as getFsp can pass undetected. Include names defined in the utils source, then exclude only names defined by the target package.
This is a test-coverage improvement. It does not establish a current production bundling failure.

project.json: E2E project contract. Keeping it in apps/e2e/. The repo rule (.claude/rules/e2e-tests-location.md) puts specs that spawn subprocesses or drive built artifacts under apps/e2e/demo-e2e-*, and those projects are the ones that get build dependsOn, the e2e Jest config and the CI e2e matrix. This app depends on the builds of plugin-cache, plugin-dashboard and edge, packs them and loads them in a fresh npm project, so it belongs there. It is not the only artifact-level app without a src/main.ts server: demo-e2e-bundle-size, demo-e2e-dts-consumer, demo-e2e-cli-exec, demo-e2e-mcpb, demo-e2e-cloudflare, demo-e2e-nx-plugin and demo-e2e-frontmcp-config follow the same shape. Booting a server here wouldn't test anything this PR changes.
published-imports.e2e.spec.ts line 63: private utils definitions. Keeping the scan on utils' exported names. esbuild keeps a private helper such as getFsp only when a kept function calls it, and those callers (readFile, writeFile, …) are exports, which the scan already flags. The control assertion confirms the scan has teeth: on main it finds 74 to 78 bundled utils functions per package. Adding every private name in the utils source would add generic helper names that a package can define on its own, which means false positives without catching a case the exported names miss.
…dashboard and edge instead of bundling it
The three packages bundled @frontmcp/utils, so their builds imported utils'
own dependencies (@noble/ciphers, @noble/hashes, @enclave-vm/ast,
@upstash/redis, @vercel/kv, ioredis, zod, @frontmcp/lazy-zod) without
declaring them, and loaded a second copy of utils next to the SDK's.
- add @frontmcp/utils to the external list of the CommonJS and ESM builds
- declare @frontmcp/utils at the internal version in plugin-dashboard and edge
- drop the @enclave-vm/ast dependency added in #953; utils declares it
- add demo-e2e-published-imports: packs each package, fails on bundled utils
code or an undeclared bare import, and loads all three under require and
import in a fresh npm project with @enclave-vm/ast 2.16.0 at the top level
Closes#956
… scan and time out npm child processes
The scan reported any function or class named like a @frontmcp/utils export, so a local helper
such as escapeHtml failed it. Names the package's own sources define are now left out, and a
positive control checks that the remaining names still identify definitions in utils' build.
npm install and the load checks run synchronously, which blocks Jest's own timeouts; they now
time out on their own.
