What does this PR do?

A proxy variable written without a scheme, e.g. HTTPS_PROXY=proxy.corp:3128, made undici's EnvHttpProxyAgent throw Invalid URL. The CLI warned, ignored the proxy, connected directly, and on a proxy-only network every command then failed with exit 10 ("service unavailable"). curl and most tools treat host:port as http://host:port.

maybeInstallProxyAgent now reads the proxy variables itself, in undici's own order (http_proxy ?? HTTP_PROXY, https_proxy ?? HTTPS_PROXY, HTTPS falling back to the HTTP proxy; env-http-proxy-agent.js:26-38 in undici 7.29.1). It adds http:// when a value has no scheme:// and passes both values to EnvHttpProxyAgent explicitly. NO_PROXY is still read by undici per request, unchanged. Full-URL values are passed through as they are. A truly unsupported value (e.g. ftp://) still warns and falls back, as before.

This also makes deps.env the real input, so the unit tests now exercise the value they set. Before, undici read process.env behind the tests' back.

Before / after (HTTPS_PROXY=127.0.0.1:P, API reachable only through the proxy):

before: warning: ignoring proxy environment (could not initialize proxy agent): Invalid URL
        ... exit 10
after: request tunnels through 127.0.0.1:P, `auth status` exits 0

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change that adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that changes existing behavior)
  • Documentation only
  • Build / CI / chore

Checklist

  • PR targets the main branch.
  • Commits follow Conventional Commits
    (feat(...), fix(...), docs(...), …).
  • npm run lint and npm run format:check pass.
  • npm run typecheck passes.
  • npm test passes and coverage stays at or above the 80% gate.
  • New behavior is covered by unit tests (mock-based; no network or
    credentials required).
  • No secrets, API keys, internal endpoints, or personal data are included.
  • User-facing changes are reflected in README.md / DOCUMENTATION.md where
    relevant.

Notes for reviewers

  • Only src/lib/proxy.ts changes behaviour (+16/-5). No new dependencies.
  • The unit tests route a real undici fetch through a recording CONNECT proxy on 127.0.0.1. They cover: host:port for HTTPS_PROXY and HTTP_PROXY, HTTPS falling back to HTTP_PROXY, lower-case first, full http:// unchanged, NO_PROXY still sending traffic direct, and an unsupported scheme still falling back. No external network is used.
  • test/proxy.subprocess.test.ts runs the built CLI (auth status) through a local CONNECT proxy with a scheme-less value. The API URL is a closed local port, so the command can succeed only through the proxy. Happy to drop it if the unit tests are enough.
  • Fails before / passes after: on main, 7 of the new tests fail (the subprocess one with the Invalid URL warning). With the fix, the full suite passes on Node 22 on Windows: 4797 passed / 11 skipped. Coverage is 89.97 / 85.00 / 83.65 / 92.14 (stmts / branches / funcs / lines), equal to or slightly above main.
  • The comment's unsupported-scheme example moved from socks5:// to ftp://, because undici 7.29 now accepts socks5 proxies.
  • DOCUMENTATION.md says only "standard proxy support". No doc change seemed needed. CHANGELOG is written at release time.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Proxy settings provided as host:port now work without requiring an http:// prefix. HTTP and HTTPS requests can use these values, while existing full-URL settings remain supported.
    • Lowercase proxy variables take precedence over uppercase ones, and HTTPS requests can fall back to HTTP_PROXY when needed.
  • Tests
    • Added coverage for proxy routing, NO_PROXY bypass behavior, and command-line use of proxy settings without a scheme.

HTTPS_PROXY=proxy.corp:3128 made undici's EnvHttpProxyAgent throw
"Invalid URL", the CLI fell back to a direct connection, and on a
proxy-only network every command exited 10. Read the proxy variables
from the injected env in undici's own order (lower-case first, HTTPS
falling back to HTTP), prefix http:// when no scheme is given (as curl
does), and pass them to EnvHttpProxyAgent explicitly. NO_PROXY handling
and full-URL values are unchanged; unsupported schemes still warn and
fall back.

Walkthrough

Proxy setup now normalizes scheme-less proxy environment values before passing them to EnvHttpProxyAgent. Unit and subprocess tests check proxy selection, bypass behavior, invalid values, and CLI requests through a local CONNECT proxy.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title names the fix and its scope: proxy variables written without a scheme are now accepted. The changeset adds http:// to scheme-less proxy values in src/lib/proxy.ts, adds tests for that behavior, and adds a subprocess test. The title matches the main change and uses the conventional fix(http) prefix. It is concise and specific.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Issue #673 requires scheme-less proxy values, lower-case-first precedence, HTTPS fallback to HTTP_PROXY, unchanged full URLs, undici-managed NO_PROXY, and fallback for unsupported schemes. src/lib/proxy.ts reads deps.env, normalizes values with http://, passes both values to EnvHttpProxyAgent, and preserves the warning fallback. Unit tests cover these behaviors. The subprocess test verifies a built CLI request through a local CONNECT proxy.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changes are limited to proxy normalization and related automated tests in src/lib/proxy.test.ts and test/proxy.subprocess.test.ts. The tests directly verify the requirements in issue #673. No unrelated product behavior or dependency change appears in the reviewed diff.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 33.33% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 3 functions across 3 files.

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Make the bypass test fail when the direct request fails.

routeThrough discards any fetch rejection. The NO_PROXY case then asserts only that the proxy saw no CONNECT request. The test can therefore pass when the direct request never reaches its target.

Return the outcome of the direct fetch from routeThrough. In the NO_PROXY case, assert that the direct request succeeded, and keep the zero-CONNECT assertion.

Choose the success signal carefully. CONTRIBUTING.md says unit tests run with no network, and npm test includes src/**/*.test.ts. A new loopback listener would conflict with that rule.
