fix(credentials): read section headers that carry a trailing comment - #705
A hand-edited credentials file with a comment on a header line ([prod] # production account) didn't match the section pattern, so that section's keys were read into the section above it:
The default profile silently authenticated with the prod key.
--profile prod found no credentials.
The next write saved the swap and lost the original default key.
Headers may now end in a # or ; comment. Any other line starting with [ resets the current section, so keys under a header the parser can't read never land in another profile.
npm test passes and coverage stays at or above the 80% gate.
New behavior is covered by unit tests (mock-based; no network or
credentials required).
No secrets, API keys, internal endpoints, or personal data are included.
User-facing changes are reflected in README.md / DOCUMENTATION.md where
relevant.
Notes for reviewers
src/lib/credentials.ts (parseCredentials):
the header regex accepts a trailing comment: /^\[([^\]]+)\]\s*(?:[#;].*)?$/;
an unreadable [-line sets currentEntry = null.
Two new unit tests in credentials.test.ts (one for a #/; comment on a header, one for an unreadable header). Both fail on main and pass with the fix. Local results: 48/48 there, full suite green, tsc / Prettier clean.
Credential files now correctly recognize profile headers followed by # or ; comments.
Keys following an invalid profile header are no longer assigned to the previous profile, helping prevent credentials from being associated with the wrong profile.
A header such as `[prod] # production account` did not match the section
pattern, so its keys were read into the section above it: the default
profile silently authenticated with the prod key, `--profile prod` found no
credentials, and the next write persisted the swap and lost the original
key. Headers may now end in a # or ; comment, and any other line starting
with [ resets the current section instead of inheriting the previous one.

parseCredentials now recognizes section headers followed by # or ; comments. It also clears the active section when a bracket-prefixed line does not match the header format. Tests cover both cases.

Summary
Section header parsing and validation src/lib/credentials.ts, src/lib/credentials.test.ts
parseCredentials accepts trailing # or ; comments on section headers. An unreadable bracket-prefixed line clears the active section. Tests cover both behaviors.
TestSprite/testsprite-cli#651 — The issue describes the same credential parsing behavior for commented profile headers and unreadable headers.

The parser now accepts commented headers and no longer mixes keys from an unreadable header into the preceding profile. A crafted or corrupted credentials file with a __proto__ section can still add a key to the shared object prototype. Using a null-prototype record for parsed profiles should be fixed before merging.

Explanation
Issue #702 has one direct coding objective, with two parts: (1) parse a section header that has a trailing # or ; comment, and (2) reset the current section when a [-line cannot be parsed as a header, so its keys do not land in the section above.
Part 1: The diff at head changes the header pattern in parseCredentials (src/lib/credentials.ts) from /^\[([^\]]+)\]$/ to /^\[([^\]]+)\]\s*(?:[#;].*)?$/. The header [prod] # production account now matches, and the name captured is prod. The new test 'reads a section header that carries a trailing comment' (src/lib/credentials.test.ts at head) covers [prod] # ... and [dev] ; ... and expects prod and dev to hold their own keys.
Part 2: The diff adds a branch after the header match: if the trimmed line starts with [ and did not match the header pattern, the code sets currentEntry = null and continues. Keys that follow an unreadable header are therefore skipped. The new test 'never moves keys under an unreadable header into the section above it' covers [prod] stray text and expects only default to remain.
I traced the issue repro against the new code. Input [default]\napi_key = A\n[prod] # c\napi_key = B now yields prod: { apiKey: 'B' } and default: { apiKey: 'A' }. The base code yielded default: { apiKey: 'B' }. Both new tests fail on the base pattern, which matches the PR claim.
The PR changes no other source file in the whole-PR diff (base to head). Its scope matches #702. The #495 root cause (rewrite comment and symlink handling) is not part of this change.
Limitation: the inspect_repository diff for the test file was unavailable. I read the test file at head instead. The test contents match the PR description. I did not run the test suite.
Full details: Out of Scope Changes check
Explanation
The whole-PR change set (merge base to head) has two parts. Both serve #702.
src/lib/credentials.ts: the header regex gains an optional trailing #/; comment group, and a new branch resets currentEntry on any other [-line. Both edits implement #702 directly. No other logic in parseCredentials or the serializer changed in the diff.
src/lib/credentials.test.ts: two new it blocks in describe('parseCredentials') test the two behaviors above. These tests support the change and do not test unrelated code. The rest of the test file, which covers serialization and locking, is unchanged by this PR according to the diff summary.
No unrelated refactor, dependency change, or behavior change outside parseCredentials appears in the evidence. The PR description's extra checklist items (lint, format, typecheck, coverage) are process statements, not code changes.
Full details: Docstring Coverage
Explanation
Docstring coverage is 0.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 1 functions across 2 files.
Resolution
Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

[__proto__] # account matches the new header expression. Since result is a plain object, result[sectionName] returns Object.prototype. The following api_key assignment can therefore add apiKey to Object.prototype, and no __proto__ profile is serialized.
Plain [__proto__] already matched the previous expression, so this pollution path predates the trailing-comment change. The new expression also makes it reachable with a trailing comment.
