The notes under the README's local-testing example had grown into one wall of transport and retry internals: host-resolution rules, the TLS trust store, retry-episode timing, plaintext fallback and borrowed-tunnel edge cases (about 3,200 characters). This trims them to what a first-time reader needs (about 1,100 characters):

  • what --local <port> saves, how to pick a different loopback host, and that --local-host is deprecated;
  • testing a production build when a dev server is slow through the tunnel;
  • verified TLS, and NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS on a network that re-signs TLS;
  • the 60-second connect limit (exit 10, owned run cancelled and refunded);
  • cancellation and refunds for owned and borrowed tunnels;
  • plan authoring for local projects, and Portal runs staying blocked until the project has a public URL.

Everything removed is already covered in DOCUMENTATION.md → Local frontend testing and tunnels, which the README links to. README only; no behaviour change.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Documentation
    • Clarified that --local <port> saves new URLs using the localhost host, and that --url can specify a different loopback host. Documented --local-host as deprecated.
    • Updated tunnel guidance to cover verified TLS, NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS, and connection failures that time out after 60 seconds, canceling and refunding an owned run.
    • Clarified cancellation behavior for owned and borrowed runs, updated local-project plan guidance, and noted that portal runs require a public project URL.

The paragraph after the local-testing example had grown into a wall of
transport and retry internals. Keep what a first-time reader needs (what
--local saves, picking a host, slow dev servers, TLS behind a re-signing
proxy, the 60-second connect limit, cancellation and refunds, plan
authoring, Portal runs) and leave the rest to DOCUMENTATION.md, which
already covers it.

Walkthrough

The README updates local-testing guidance for URL hosts, tunnel connections, run cancellation, and project plan generation.

Changes

Local testing documentation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Local URL and tunnel guidance
README.md
The README says --local saves new URLs with the localhost host, describes --local-host as deprecated, and directs users to --url for a specific loopback host. It documents verified TLS, NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS, a 60-second connection-failure limit, and cancellation and refund of an owned run. It also describes cancellation defaults, local-project plan behavior, and the public URL requirement for portal runs.

The README should clarify that localhost is the default and disclose the plaintext fallback for older or self-hosted servers. These are bounded documentation issues; the change does not alter tunnel behavior.

An owned tunnel's timeout or Ctrl-C cancels unfinished runs by default. A borrowed run still detaches without cancellation on Ctrl-C/SIGTERM because its owner keeps the tunnel alive; if that owner disappears while a run is active, the borrower cancels its own run and reports `cancelled`, `already finished`, or `skipped`. A run cancelled before it finishes is refunded. `--no-cancel-on-interrupt` also skips this owner-gone cancellation. Keep the early stderr run-id receipts (`Run <runId>` for one test, `[i/N] <testId> → run <runId>` for a batch) and read the reported runs before re-running.
Local projects skip exploration/plan generation; author plans with `test create --plan-from`. Portal runs are blocked for free until you set a public project URL.
See [the full local-testing reference](./DOCUMENTATION.md#local-frontend-testing-and-tunnels) for flags, login, billing/refunds, timeouts, and retargeting.
`--local <port>` saves new project and environment URLs as `http://localhost:<port>`. Use `--url http://127.0.0.1:<port>` or `--url http://[::1]:<port>` when the host matters (`--local-host` is deprecated). Dev servers can be slow through a tunnel, so for heavy apps test a production build (`npm run build` plus your framework's preview or start command).

State that localhost is the default.

--local-host remains accepted and overrides the host saved by --local <port>. Describe localhost as the default, or state that --local-host remains an override.

Suggested wording
-`--local <port>` saves new project and environment URLs as `http://localhost:<port>`.
+`--local <port>` defaults new project and environment URLs to `http://localhost:<port>`. Use `--local-host` to override the host.

The tunnel uses verified TLS. On a network that re-signs TLS, set `NODE_EXTRA_CA_CERTS=/path/to/ca.pem` to your organisation's root CA. If the tunnel keeps failing to connect for 60 seconds, the command exits **10**, and an owned run is cancelled and refunded.

Qualify the TLS guarantee.

Older or self-hosted servers that do not advertise a TLS endpoint use the legacy plaintext data port. Update this sentence so it does not imply that every supported tunnel connection is encrypted.

Suggested wording
-The tunnel uses verified TLS.
