Season 4 CLI Improvement Bonus

  • I'm entering this PR for the Season 4 CLI Improvement Bonus

Discord username: 0xfestac

What does this PR do?

Fixes a set of environment-dependent test failures and gaps in the test suite,
with no intended change to product behavior:

  1. 6 permission-denied tests failed in capability-holding environments.
    Tests in src/commands/test.test.ts, src/commands/doctor.test.ts, and
    src/lib/secret-file.test.ts assumed chmodSync(path, 0o000) makes a file
(or directory) unreadable. That premise is false for processes holding
CAP_DAC_OVERRIDE (typical in Docker containers and root/user-namespace
sandboxes), where the kernel skips permission checks, no EACCES is
raised, and the tests fail downstream. Added
test/helpers/fsModeEnforcement.ts, which probes once per process whether
the OS actually enforces mode bits, and extended the existing skip guards
to skip cleanly (with a documented reason) where the premise is impossible,
while still running everywhere a real EACCES can be produced.

  2. The remaining 8 skipped tests now run by default.

    • The 6 mode-bit tests above are no longer skipped under npm test: a new
      scripts/run-tests.mjs detects CAP_DAC_OVERRIDE in /proc/self/status
and, on Linux only, re-execs vitest under setpriv with
      CAP_DAC_OVERRIDE/CAP_DAC_READ_SEARCH dropped from the
bounding/inheritable/ambient sets, so the kernel enforces mode bits again
and the probe reports true. Falls back to a plain vitest run on
macOS/Windows/non-capability environments or if setpriv is unavailable,
so npm test never gets harder to run. CLI args pass through.
    • The 2 resolveBundleDir tests in src/lib/bundle.test.ts were gated on
win32 even though only part of their assertion (node's isAbsolute
      recognizing C:\…) is platform-bound. Exported the pure-string
stripTrailingSeparators from src/lib/bundle.ts (no behavior change)
and rewrote the tests as always-running assertions against it; the
win32-bound part remains covered by the Windows CI leg.
  3. A subprocess test timed out on loaded machines.
test/billing-refusal-render.subprocess.test.ts spawns the built CLI twice
per case (up to ~20s of legitimate spawnSync runtime) but inherited
vitest's 5s default per-test timeout, so cases were killed as timeouts under
contention. Set an explicit 30s per-test timeout, matching the repo's
existing convention in test/cli.subprocess.test.ts. The same latent gap in
    test/tunnel-limit-render.subprocess.test.ts and
test/history-retention.subprocess.test.ts got the same 30s timeout.

Type of change

  • Bug fix (non-breaking change that fixes an issue)
  • New feature (non-breaking change that adds functionality)
  • Breaking change (fix or feature that changes existing behavior)
  • Documentation only
  • Build / CI / chore

Checklist

  • PR targets the main branch.
  • Commits follow Conventional Commits
    (feat(...), fix(...), docs(...), …).
  • npm run lint and npm run format:check pass.
  • npm run typecheck passes.
  • npm test passes and coverage stays at or above the 80% gate.
  • New behavior is covered by unit tests (mock-based; no network or
    credentials required).
  • No secrets, API keys, internal endpoints, or personal data are included.
  • User-facing changes are reflected in README.md / DOCUMENTATION.md where
    relevant.

Notes for reviewers

No product behavior change. The only non-test edit is exporting the
existing pure-string helper stripTrailingSeparators from src/lib/bundle.ts
(no logic change). Everything else is test infrastructure.

Verification performed

  • Baseline npm test in the affected container: 4,580 passed | 8 skipped |
    0 failed
    .
  • Same container with setpriv dropping the caps (proving the tests still
exercise the EACCES-mapping paths where the OS enforces mode bits):
    115 files passed, 4,586 passed | 2 skipped.
  • After the run-tests.mjs + bundle-test changes, default npm test:
    115 files passed, 4,588 passed | 0 skipped | 0 failed.
  • Timeout fix reproduced under CPU contention (32 busy-loops on 4 cores):
    file went from 4/6 cases failing with Test timed out in 5000ms → 6 passed (6);
    full suite still 4,588 passed | 0 skipped | 0 failed.

Why not gate on euid? The run-tests.mjs capability check deliberately
reads CapEff from /proc/self/status rather than the effective uid, because
user-namespace sandboxes hold the full capability set as a non-root user.

Skips vs. failures. The skip guard is the fallback for environments where
the capability cannot be dropped (e.g. setpriv missing); the primary path
(setpriv re-exec) makes the tests run for real.

Please confirm before merge: npm run lint, npm run format:check, and
npm run typecheck — I left those unchecked as I don't have output for them
from your environment.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved test reliability on systems with different file-permission behavior and Linux security settings.
    • Reduced intermittent test failures by allowing additional time for subprocess-based checks.
  • Tests
    • Windows-style path handling is now tested across platforms, and permission checks run only where filesystem permissions support them.

Walkthrough

The test suite now checks filesystem mode-bit enforcement, adjusts test execution and platform-independent path assertions, and gives selected subprocess tests 30-second timeouts.

Changes

Test suite reliability

Layer / File(s) Summary
Probe filesystem mode-bit enforcement
test/helpers/fsModeEnforcement.ts, src/commands/doctor.test.ts, src/commands/test.test.ts, src/lib/secret-file.test.ts, BUG-FIXES.md
A shared probe checks whether mode-000 files remain readable. Permission-denied tests skip on Windows or when mode bits are not enforced.
Configure portable test execution and path assertions
package.json, scripts/run-tests.mjs, src/lib/bundle.ts, src/lib/bundle.test.ts, BUG-FIXES.md
The test script uses a runner that drops specified DAC capabilities under the documented Linux condition, with direct Vitest fallback. Bundle tests check trailing-separator handling on all platforms.
Set subprocess test timeouts
test/billing-refusal-render.subprocess.test.ts, test/cli.help.test.ts, test/history-retention.subprocess.test.ts, test/tunnel-limit-render.subprocess.test.ts, BUG-FIXES.md
Selected subprocess tests now use 30-second timeouts.

🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

The fallback does not cover a setpriv capability-drop failure.

The setpriv --help probe only shows that the binary exists. Dropping the bounding set needs CAP_SETPCAP. A container root without that capability makes setpriv exit non-zero with an EPERM error. This is not a spawn error, so dropped.error is unset. Line 86 then exits with the setpriv status, and npm test fails without running Vitest. The header comment promises a fallback to plain vitest run on any guard miss.

Probe the real capability drop with a no-op command. Fall back to runVitest() if the probe exits non-zero.
