Season 4 CLI Improvement Bonus

  • I'm entering this PR for the Season 4 CLI Improvement Bonus
  • Discord username: Not on Discord, please reach me on the PR

What does this PR do?

Adds testsprite test export <test-id> [--out <file>] and testsprite test import <file> so individual backend (python / pytest) test definitions can be exported to deterministic JSON files, tracked in version control, and restored or updated through a single workflow.

Key behaviors

  • API-shape projection (test export): Composes GET /tests/{id} and GET /tests/{id}/code into { test, code } without introducing a separate format-version field. Supported definition metadata (name, description, priority, stepTimeoutMs, produces, consumes, category, projectId, type) and code (including codeVersion and identity provenance) are preserved while stripping runtime/status fields. Keys are sorted recursively with array order and source whitespace intact.
  • Presigned source URL resolution: When the code field in GET /tests/{id}/code contains an expiring HTTPS URL, export fetches the Python source without forwarding facade auth headers before serializing. A 350 KB source ceiling and 1 MB artifact ceiling keep exported files self-contained and importable.
  • Explicit create vs. guarded update (test import):
    • Create (default): Calls POST /tests using the definition in the file, allowing --project to override the target project. Saved IDs and versions act as provenance and never trigger an implicit overwrite.
    • Update (--test-id <id>): Verifies target identity and project match, uses saved code.codeVersion or an --expected-version override, rejects empty/wildcard bypasses, and sends PUT /tests/{id}/code (If-Match) before PUT /tests/{id} so version conflicts abort before metadata changes. Updating a different test requires --expected-version.
  • Stage-derived idempotency and atomic file I/O: Derives :create, :code, and :metadata idempotency keys from a caller-supplied --idempotency-key for stage retries, and writes --out files via the existing atomic sibling temp-file sink.

Checklist

  • PR targets the main branch.
  • Commits follow Conventional Commits (feat(...), fix(...), docs(...), ...).
  • npm run lint and npm run format:check pass.
  • npm run typecheck passes.
  • npm test passes and coverage stays at or above the 80% gate.
  • New behavior is covered by unit tests (mock-based; no network or credentials required).

  • User-facing changes are reflected in README.md / DOCUMENTATION.md where relevant.

Notes for reviewers

  1. Alignment with [Hackathon] Add "test export" / "test import" to round-trip test DEFINITIONS for version control #125 design constraints:
    • The artifact projects the supported test and code API fields without a separate schema version. Unknown keys, malformed fields, and mismatched identities fail validation on import. Create treats optional null metadata as unset; IDs, versions, and ETags remain provenance. Updates patch only fields present in the file.
    • Backend (python / pytest) scope in v1: frontend export and import fail explicitly; restoring frontend definitions is outside this version. Individual definitions remain separate from Test Lists (suites) and JUnit reports (execution results).
  2. Dedicated bounded file reader:
    • readSecretFileGuarded() reads an unbounded buffer and applies .trim() for secret inputs; the plan reader intentionally allows non-regular streams. The definition reader follows the existing descriptor and error conventions while enforcing non-blocking regular-file checks, optional UTF-8 BOM handling, and a 1 MB read bound before API requests.
  3. Partial updates across separate endpoints:
    • Code-first updates catch If-Match conflicts before touching metadata. If metadata then fails, stderr reports the partial state, preserves the typed error exit code, and identifies the idempotency key for retrying the same stages.
  4. Validation:
    • Full unit suite with coverage: 4,612 passed, 0 failed, and 2 existing Windows-only tests skipped on Linux. Coverage: lines 91.96%, statements 89.76%, functions 83.10%, branches 84.86%. Full lint, formatting, and TypeScript checks pass.
    • Local E2E: 103 passed, 0 failed, 1 existing skip. GitHub script tests: 80 passed, 0 failed, 2 existing skips. Validated on WSL Ubuntu / Node 24 using an isolated loopback network namespace.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added commands to export backend test definitions as deterministic JSON and import them to create a copy or update an existing test.
    • Updates require an expected code version to avoid overwriting newer changes. Code and metadata are saved separately, and partial failures are reported.
    • Exports can be printed or saved to a file. Dry runs work offline for both commands.
    • Frontend test definitions are not supported.
  • Documentation
    • Added command guidance covering validation, supported fields, size limits, and update behavior.

Review in Change Stack →

Walkthrough

The CLI adds backend test definition export and import commands. Export produces deterministic JSON with test metadata and Python code. Import creates a test by default or updates a selected test with version checks. The change also adds definition validation, command documentation, and workflow tests.

Export may fail if the API adds a code field, and importing a file with invalid UTF-8 may change its source. These issues warrant follow-up, but the current evidence does not indicate a broad workflow failure.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(test): add export and import for backend definitions" matches the main change. The changeset adds testsprite test export and testsprite test import commands for backend (Python/pytest) test definitions, with supporting library code, docs, and tests. The title omits the version-guarded update behavior and the frontend exclusion, which is acceptable for a title.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

All changed areas support the export and import workflow in #125:

  • src/commands/test.ts: runExport and runImport, the ExportOptions and ImportOptions types, the ImportResult type, and the optional CliTest.description field used by the projection.
  • src/lib/test-definition.ts: projection, validation, deterministic serialization, and guarded file reading for definitions.
  • Tests: test.definition.spec.ts, test.test.ts, and test/help.snapshot.test.ts cover the new behavior and the new subcommands.
  • CHANGELOG.md, DOCUMENTATION.md, and README.md: document the new commands.

The presigned-code streaming change, which rethrows ApiError unchanged, appears in the export path. No unrelated product behavior is shown. The ignored snapshot file test/snapshots/help.snapshot.test.ts.snap was excluded from review. This does not affect the scope result. The help snapshot test change only adds the new subcommands.

The PR does not implement the JUnit results export (#95) or declarative directory sync, which #125 names as separate work.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

Scope: directly linked issue #125 only. No parent or contextual issues apply.

Met objectives [#125]:

  • Deterministic definition export: src/lib/test-definition.ts projects metadata and code, sorts keys recursively, and serializes with stringifyTestDefinition. test.definition.spec.ts checks stable output despite API property order.
  • codeVersion as provenance: the code field, including codeVersion, is preserved in the artifact. Import reads the saved codeVersion as the expected version.
  • Create or guarded update: runImport calls POST /tests for create. For update, it sends PUT /tests/{id}/code with If-Match before PUT /tests/{id}, so version conflicts stop before metadata changes.
  • Backend-only v1: #125 allows scoping v1 to backend tests. Frontend export and import fail explicitly, as the PR description states. This is allowed.

Unmet objective [#125]:

  • The issue requires the artifact to contain a schemaVersion. The current PR description states the artifact has no separate schema version or format-version field. No schemaVersion field is projected on export or validated on import. The PR does not supply an updated requirement that removes this criterion.

Resolution

Add a schemaVersion field to the exported definition in src/lib/test-definition.ts. Validate it in parseTestDefinition during import, and add unit tests for export output and for import rejection of a missing or unsupported value. Alternatively, obtain an updated requirement from the #125 owner that removes the schemaVersion criterion, and record that change on the issue.

Full details: Docstring Coverage

Explanation

Docstring coverage is 30.00% which is insufficient. The required threshold is 80.00%. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 10 functions across 2 files. (4 skipped: 3 unsupported, 1 too large.)

Resolution

Write docstrings for the functions missing them to satisfy the coverage threshold.

Project the code fields explicitly during export.

projectTestDefinition passes the complete /tests/{id}/code response to parseTestDefinition, which rejects unknown code keys. If the API adds a response field, test export can fail with VALIDATION_ERROR (exit 5). Project the supported fields before parsing.

Minor · Functional Correctness · Quick win

Reject invalid UTF-8 instead of replacing bytes.

Buffer.toString('utf8') replaces invalid byte sequences with U+FFFD and does not report an error. A definition file with corrupted bytes in the Python source therefore parses successfully. import then uploads source that no longer matches the original. The documentation requires a "regular UTF-8 JSON file".

Decode with TextDecoder and fatal: true. A default TextDecoder also strips the BOM, so the explicit replace is not needed. Map the decode failure to a specific validation error. The generic catch below would otherwise report cannot read regular file.
