Season 4 CLI Improvement Bonus

  • I'm entering this PR for the Season 4 CLI Improvement Bonus

Discord username: @npall_805

What does this PR do?

Adds client-side input validation guards across the testlist command group (testlist get, testlist delete, testlist update, testlist add, testlist remove, testlist run) to ensure positional <list-id>, <test-id...>, and --case arguments are non-empty and non-whitespace:

  • assertValidListId: Added helper in src/commands/testlist.ts that throws typed localValidationError('list-id', 'is required and must not be empty or whitespace-only', undefined, 'field') (exit code 5, VALIDATION_ERROR).
  • Commands guarded:
    • runTestlistGet: fails fast on whitespace/empty listId in both live and --dry-run modes.
    • runTestlistDelete: fails fast on whitespace/empty listId in both live and --dry-run modes.
    • runTestlistUpdate: fails fast on whitespace/empty listId in both live and --dry-run modes.
    • mutateCases (testlist add and testlist remove): validates listId and iterates opts.testIds to ensure no whitespace-only string bypasses the existing empty array check.
    • validateTestlistRunOptions (testlist run): validates listId and validates each entry in opts.cases.
  • Fails fast before --dry-run short-circuits or HTTP dispatch, preventing fake dry-run success signals or malformed URL interpolation (/testlist/%20%20%20).
  • Tests added: Comprehensive test block in src/commands/testlist.spec.ts asserting that empty and whitespace arguments throw VALIDATION_ERROR (exit 5) across both live and --dry-run modes.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Test-list commands now reject missing, empty, or whitespace-only list IDs before proceeding.
    • Add and remove operations reject empty or whitespace-only test IDs, while run rejects empty or whitespace-only case IDs.
    • Invalid IDs are also rejected in applicable dry-run operations. For get, delete, and update, list ID validation errors return a validation error with exit code 5.

Walkthrough

Testlist commands now reject missing, empty, or whitespace-only list IDs before command handling. Case mutation and run-option validation also reject empty or whitespace-only test IDs. Tests cover invalid inputs, including dry-run calls.

Changes

Testlist argument validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
List ID validation
src/commands/testlist.ts, src/commands/testlist.spec.ts
A shared helper rejects missing, empty, or whitespace-only list IDs. Get, update, and delete validate list IDs before proceeding. Tests cover invalid list IDs in normal and dry-run calls.
Case ID validation
src/commands/testlist.ts, src/commands/testlist.spec.ts
Case mutation rejects empty or whitespace-only test IDs. Run-option validation rejects empty or whitespace-only case IDs. Tests cover add, remove, and run, including dry-run calls.

Change: Bug fix · Severity of issue fixed: Low

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 2aa7c

Invalid IDs currently appear to be rejected before requests, but the tests would miss regressions in request ordering or in the error returned by add, remove, and run. The change is mergeable with those bounded gaps understood.

Assert exit code 5 for add, remove, and run.

These tests pass for any ApiError, including one with the wrong exit code. Assert { code: 'VALIDATION_ERROR', exitCode: 5 } for the invalid inputs, including dry-run inputs. Based on learnings, “In CLI test suites, assert the exact expected exit code.” As per path instructions, “error paths must map to the documented exit code.”

Assert that invalid IDs do not dispatch HTTP requests.

The invalid-input tests omit the dependency object, so they do not observe the transport. A regression could send a request and then throw the expected VALIDATION_ERROR while these assertions still pass.

The existing no-network tests cover dry-run with valid IDs and delete confirmation. They do not cover invalid-ID validation for all six command paths. Inject a counting transport into each invalid-input test and assert that it remains unused.

Suggested fix
     it('get: rejects empty and whitespace list-id', async () => {
+      const { env } = makeCreds();
+      let called = false;
+      const fetchImpl = makeFetch(() => {
+        called = true;
+        return { body: DETAIL };
+      });
+      const deps = { env, fetchImpl, stdout: () => {}, stderr: () => {} };
+
       for (const invalidId of ['', '   ', '\t\n']) {
-        await expect(runTestlistGet({ ...base, listId: invalidId })).rejects.toThrow(ApiError);
- await expect(runTestlistGet({ ...base, listId: invalidId, dryRun: true })).rejects.toThrow(
-          ApiError,
-        );
+        await expect(runTestlistGet({ ...base, listId: invalidId }, deps)).rejects.toThrow(ApiError);
+        await expect(
+ runTestlistGet({ ...base, listId: invalidId, dryRun: true }, deps),
+        ).rejects.toThrow(ApiError);
         try {
-          await runTestlistGet({ ...base, listId: invalidId });
+          await runTestlistGet({ ...base, listId: invalidId }, deps);
         } catch (e: unknown) {
           const err = e as ApiError;
           expect(err.exitCode).toBe(5);

         }
       }
+
+      expect(called).toBe(false);
     });

Apply the same counting transport to the delete, update, add, remove, and run tests.

Assert the typed validation contract for add, remove, and run.

These tests only check that an ApiError is thrown. They still pass if the error has the wrong code or exitCode. Assert VALIDATION_ERROR and exit code 5, as the other invalid-ID tests do.

Thanks for the work on this. #381 was closed as a duplicate of #368, which now fixes empty positional ids once where arguments are parsed instead of per command, so this per-command change is superseded. Closing. You're welcome to claim #368 and carry your tests over.
