Problem

The Amphetamine package's duration slider runs from 15 to 240 minutes and can't start an indefinite session. Only a separate popup row can, and that popup opens only when the package's click setting is controls, so with the default the hover slider can't keep the Mac awake indefinitely. A slider block is a native, evenly stepped slider, so a package can't add a stop that reads as different from the steps.

Closes #399

Changes

  • endStop on slider blocks, in popups and hoverLayout: "endStop": { "value": 0, "label": "∞" } adds one more stop past max, set apart by a notch (a gap with a hairline).

    • Dragging past max holds the knob there until the pointer is most of the way through the notch, then snaps it onto the end stop with the alignment haptic edit mode already plays. Leaving takes most of the notch too, so the knob doesn't flicker at the notch.
    • Releasing there sends the end stop's value as VALUE, and a source equal to it puts the knob on the end stop. The value must lie outside min…max, and decoding says so otherwise.
    • The arrow keys (with keyboard navigation on) and VoiceOver step from max onto the end stop and back; VoiceOver reads its label.
  • EndStopSlider: SwiftUI's Slider can't draw a notch, so StableBar draws these sliders itself, to the native slider's measures on macOS 26 and later per control size. I measured those from offscreen renders:

Size Track Knob Dots below the track
    Regular (popups) 6 pt 20 × 16 pt 7 pt
    Small (hover tooltip) 4 pt 10 × 18 pt 6 pt
    Mini (inline hover controls) 4 pt 8 × 16 pt 5 pt

A dot sits under each step, as on the native stepped slider, except when they would run closer than 3 pt; the end stop's label takes the place of its dot. The fill uses the tint, gray in an inactive window, and the title shows beside the slider unless labels are hidden, as with the native slider. Sliders without endStop stay native.

  • Schema, docs, scene: endStop and its sliderEndStop definition in the schema; the slider row in docs/popups.md and Controls on hover in docs/create-a-widget.md; scenes/slider-end-stop-popup.json draws a popup with the knob on a step, on max and on the end stop.

Once this ships in a release, the Amphetamine package in Seb-GRAF/stablebar-packages can use it and drop its separate Keep awake indefinitely row.

Testing

  • swift test: all 594 tests pass. The new EndStopSliderTests cover decoding, the configuration mistakes and their messages, where the steps, notch and end stop sit, holding at max before snapping (and back), the arrow-key steps, and leaving out dots that would run together. schemaListsTheSamePropertiesAsTheDecoders covers the new sliderEndStop definition.

  • Offscreen renders of the native slider beside this one, at regular, small and mini sizes, in light and dark, active and inactive: same track, knob, dots and fill. The measures in the table come from those renders.

  • StableBar --render-scenes draws the new scene. main can't read endStop, so the bot's before side reports that scene as an error.

  • Live, with a dev build and a scratch configuration: a fake keep-awake widget whose script records VALUE, so nothing touched Amphetamine. Dragging by hand in the hover tooltip and then in the popup, the knob held at 240, snapped onto ∞ past the notch, and came back off it. The script received 105, 0, 225, 0, and in a second run, with the value label centered, 240, 0, 210. The recording, from the second run, shows only the dev bar's windows:

Dragging the hover slider from 165 to 240, past the notch onto the ∞ end stop with its label centered, and back off it
  • A value label in a fixed-width slot looks better centered ("alignment": "center"): ∞ is much narrower than 240m. The scene and the recording do that, and the Amphetamine update will too.

  • Not checked: the haptic, keyboard and VoiceOver live (the stepping logic has unit tests), and the look on macOS 14 and 15, where this slider keeps its macOS 26 shape.

  • Seen while testing, not changed here: in tooltips and popups, native sliders drew with tick lines, a gray knob and no fill, live and offscreen. PopupSlider is untouched by this pull request.

Merging

One commit: a merge commit or a rebase merge.

Claude Opus 5.5 via Claude Code

A slider block's optional endStop adds one more stop past max, set apart by a notch: a gap with a
hairline, then a short stretch of track. Dragging past max holds the knob there until the pointer
is well into the notch, then snaps it onto the end stop with the alignment haptic edit mode plays.
Releasing there sends the end stop's value, and a source equal to it puts the knob there, so the
value must lie outside min…max. The arrow keys and VoiceOver step onto it too.

SwiftUI's slider can't draw the notch, so StableBar draws these sliders to the native slider's
measures on macOS 26 and later, per control size: the track, the knob, a dot under each step and
the end stop's label in place of a dot. The fill follows the tint, gray in an inactive window, and
the title shows beside it unless labels are hidden, as native sliders do.

The new scene draws a popup with the knob on a step, on max and on the end stop.

Walkthrough

Slider blocks now support an optional labeled end stop beyond the regular range. The slider renders and handles the end stop through pointer, keyboard, and accessibility input. The change also adds configuration validation, schema updates, tests, documentation, and an example scene.

Changes: End-stop slider

Layer / File(s) Summary
End-stop configuration contract
Sources/StableBar/EndStopSlider.swift, Sources/StableBar/PopupConfiguration.swift, stablebar.schema.json, Tests/StableBarTests/EndStopSliderTests.swift, Tests/StableBarTests/ModuleConfigurationTests.swift
Slider blocks accept an optional end-stop value and label. Decoding rejects end stops within the slider range and invalid end-stop objects. The schema and tests cover the new configuration.
Track and slider interaction
Sources/StableBar/EndStopSlider.swift, Tests/StableBarTests/EndStopSliderTests.swift
The track positions regular steps and the end stop, and selects stops using pointer thresholds and step order. The view supports drag, arrow-key, and accessibility selection, with haptic feedback when dragging across the end-stop boundary.
Popup integration and examples
Sources/StableBar/PopupView.swift, docs/popups.md, docs/create-a-widget.md, scenes/slider-end-stop-popup.json
Popup rendering uses EndStopSlider when an end stop is configured and otherwise retains PopupSlider. The documentation describes the option, and the new scene configures three sliders with end stops.

Severity of issue fixed: Medium

Merge Risk: Low · up to d5674

An extreme but accepted slider configuration can crash the app when the slider is drawn. Guard the tick count before merging, or accept this bounded configuration risk.

Security architecture risk: Low · up to d5674

The new setting preserves existing command permissions, but certain accepted step sizes can crash the whole app when the control renders. Those settings come from configuration or selected packages, rather than ordinary script value updates. Interrupted-drag recovery also remains unverified.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · reliability · inferred: The decoder-to-renderer numeric contract permits an application-wide failure. A slider with min=0, max=1, step=1e-20 and endStop value=2 passes the inspected validation, but rendering converts approximately 1e20 ticks to Int before checking whether ticks are too closely spaced. The resulting trap is outside the widget action’s child-process failure boundary and can terminate the shared app rather than reject or suppress one invalid control. Exposure requires configuration control or selected package content; ordinary script value updates do not control these structural parameters.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The identified availability failure affects the shared StableBar process, not merely one action subprocess. Supplying the triggering structural numbers requires configuration control or selected package content. The inspected script-output path supplies only the current slider value and does not establish remote control over min, max, step or endStop.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Selected package loading validates manifest identity, version, kind and contents before composition, and package reads enforce path boundaries. Actions execute in spawned child process groups with cancellation handling. These existing controls do not contain a numeric trap during in-process control rendering; a process group is not a privilege sandbox.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • inferred — Normal drag completion clears editing and commits the selected value. During editing, external value changes do not clear optimistic local state, matching the native wrapper’s existing ownership pattern. The custom gesture clears editing only through its completion callback; interruption recovery remains unverified. This is a coverage limitation, not an established security regression.

Explanation

Linked issue #399 is the only active direct target. Its coding requirements are covered at head d56745c.

  • Optional endStop on slider blocks: PopupContent.slider takes endStop: SliderEndStop?, and PopupBlock decoding reads the key (per the change summary). PopupView renders EndStopSlider when endStop is present. hoverLayout uses the same PopupBlock and PopupBlockView path, so it receives the same support.
  • Decoding and validation: SliderEndStop rejects unknown keys, non-finite values and blank labels. The change summary states that a value inside min…max is rejected.
  • Notch, end stop and label: EndStopSliderTrack places the steps, a notch of 8 pt with a hairline, and the end stop. The label sits under the end stop and hides while the knob is on it.
  • Drag and snap: stop(at:from:) holds the knob at max until the pointer passes about 75% of the notch. It then snaps to .end with an alignment haptic. Leaving the end stop uses the same hysteresis, so the knob does not flicker.
  • Release and source value: finish() sends endStop.value as VALUE. stored maps values[source] equal to endStop.value onto .end.
  • Keyboard and VoiceOver: stop(after:forward:) steps max to .end and back. onKeyPress and accessibilityAdjustableAction call it. The accessibility value is the label on the end stop.
  • Schema, docs, tests and scene: sliderEndStop and endStop are in the schema. docs/popups.md and docs/create-a-widget.md are updated. EndStopSliderTests covers the behavior, and ModuleConfigurationTests covers the schema comparison. scenes/slider-end-stop-popup.json is added.

Uncertainty: the read of PopupView.swift at head truncated before the slider branch, so I confirmed the hoverLayout path through the shared block path rather than by a direct read. I did not run the test suite. The Amphetamine package change is a separate follow-up and is not required here.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

Every changed area supports #399 and no unrelated change appears in the summary.

  • Sources/StableBar/EndStopSlider.swift: the new slider, end-stop model and track geometry. This is the core of the request.
  • PopupConfiguration.swift and PopupView.swift: decoding and routing of endStop. Slider blocks without endStop still render PopupSlider.
  • EndStopSliderTests.swift and ModuleConfigurationTests.swift: tests for the new behavior and the schema property check. These support the request's test requirement.
  • stablebar.schema.json: the sliderEndStop definition and the endStop property, which the request requires.
  • docs/popups.md and docs/create-a-widget.md: documentation updates, which the request requires.
  • scenes/slider-end-stop-popup.json: a render scene that demonstrates the feature. It supports the request's demonstration and verification needs.

The PR description says PopupSlider is unchanged. It also says native slider tick and fill differences were observed but not changed. Neither item is an out-of-scope change. The Amphetamine package update is excluded, and this PR does not make it.

Guard the interval count before converting it to Int.

The decoder accepts finite min, max, and step values without bounding their ratio. A configuration can therefore make ticks convert an infinite or out-of-range interval count before the spacing guard runs. The end-stop drawing path evaluates track.ticks.

The guard must also bound intervals below Double(Int.max). Otherwise, Int(intervals) + 1 can still trap.

🛡️ Suggested fix
- let count = Int(((maximum - minimum) / step + 1e-9).rounded(.down)) + 1
-        guard count > 1, (rangeEnd - knobWidth) / Double(count - 1) >= Self.minimumTickSpacing else { return [] }
+ let intervals = ((maximum - minimum) / step + 1e-9).rounded(.down)
+        guard intervals.isFinite, intervals >= 1, intervals < Double(Int.max),
+              (rangeEnd - knobWidth) / intervals >= Self.minimumTickSpacing else { return [] }
+ let count = Int(intervals) + 1

In the `ticks` calculation, validate the rounded interval count before
converting it to `Int`: require it to be finite, at least one, and below
`Double(Int.max)`. Apply the spacing check using the validated interval count,
then derive `count` with `Int(intervals) + 1` so conversion and increment cannot
