installing a package with an already-present runtime version preserves the
existing package’s ownership; when one package is uninstalled, keep or restore
the version-named junction if another package still provides that runtime.

DOTNET_ROOT was set to the package's own $dir, so installing it next to dotnet8/9/10-runtime (Versions bucket) left only the last one visible, and updating or uninstalling one removed DOTNET_ROOT for all of them. Expose the runtime in a common root, <scoop root>\shared\dotnet, built from junctions to the package's own files. The root is derived from basedir, so it works with portable and global Scoop installs. - post_install: link host\fxr\<ver> and shared\<framework>\<ver>, copy dotnet.exe - env_set: DOTNET_ROOT points to the common root - pre_uninstall: remove only this package's junctions, delete the root when empty - post_uninstall: restore DOTNET_ROOT while another runtime remains Same scripts as dotnet8-runtime, dotnet9-runtime and dotnet10-runtime in the Versions bucket.
The ASP.NET Core zip also bundles host\fxr and Microsoft.NETCore.App, so both packages can provide the same junction in the shared root. - post_install: keep an existing valid junction (first owner wins). - pre_uninstall: re-link each junction owned by this package to another installed package providing the same runtime before removing the root.
…install and uninstall edge cases - Compare the full dotnet.exe file version instead of the major only - Find replacement runtimes in installed version dirs when NO_JUNCTION is set - Stop recursively deleting the shared dotnet root; remove only empty dirs

official .NET runtime host muxer dotnet.exe hostfxr shared root version compatibility
💡 Result:
If you mean **how `dotnet.exe` (the muxer), `hostfxr`, and the shared runtime relate**:
- **`dotnet.exe` selects `hostfxr` from its own installation root**—on Windows, typically the highest version under `host\fxr\<version>`. `hostfxr` then resolves the app’s requested framework from `shared\...`. ([github.com](https://github.com/dotnet/runtime/blob/main/docs/design/features/host-components.md?utm_source=openai))
- **Runtime compatibility is a separate decision:** the app’s `.runtimeconfig.json` requests a framework version, and `hostfxr` applies roll-forward rules to choose an installed runtime. The default permits patch roll-forward and, in specified circumstances, minor-version roll-forward; major-version roll-forward requires policy/configuration. ([learn.microsoft.com](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-my/dotnet/core/versions/selection?utm_source=openai))
- **Practical rule:** run a private installation with its matching `dotnet.exe`, keeping `hostfxr` and shared frameworks under that same root. Microsoft specifically recommends the matching host for private installs; mixing roots can cause the host to discover the wrong frameworks. ([learn.microsoft.com](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/core/runtime-discovery/troubleshoot-app-launch?utm_source=openai))
So, the muxer’s version does **not** itself determine the app’s runtime version. It loads a `hostfxr` from its root; that `hostfxr` resolves the runtime according to the app’s configuration and installed frameworks. The cited docs describe the current general layout and policies, not a guarantee that every arbitrary cross-version `dotnet.exe`/`hostfxr` pairing is supported. ([learn.microsoft.com](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/dotnet/core/distribution-packaging?utm_source=openai))

🌐 Web query:
site:github.com/dotnet/runtime dotnet.exe muxer hostfxr root host components compatibility version
💡 Result:
The .NET runtime repo distinguishes **host location** from **host-version compatibility**:
- **`dotnet.exe` (the muxer)** finds `hostfxr` under `host/fxr/<version>` beside the `dotnet` executable, generally choosing the highest available version. ([github.com](https://github.com/dotnet/runtime/blob/main/docs/design/features/host-components.md?utm_source=openai))
- The repo’s install-location design says `hostfxr` should be the same version as or newer than the muxer. That’s a design constraint, not a promise that arbitrary versions are compatible. ([github.com](https://github.com/dotnet/designs/blob/main/accepted/2020/install-locations.md?utm_source=openai))
- **Compatibility APIs:** The native-hosting design says the muxer and `apphost` continue using the older hostfxr APIs; `hostfxr` must remain backward-compatible with those APIs. It also notes muxer and `hostfxr` versions should almost always match. ([github.com](https://github.com/dotnet/runtime/blob/main/docs/design/features/native-hosting.md?utm_source=openai))
- **Components:** `hostfxr` resolves frameworks and loads `hostpolicy`; `hostpolicy` is versioned with the runtime it serves. ([github.com](https://github.com/dotnet/runtime/blob/main/docs/design/features/host-components.md?utm_source=openai))
**Bottom line:** The muxer selects `hostfxr` from its own installation’s `host/fxr` directory; compatibility is maintained through hostfxr’s backward-compatible APIs, not by assuming every combination of host component versions works. These sources are the repository’s current `main` docs, not a version-pinned release.

Refresh the shared muxer after removing its provider.
post_install copies dotnet.exe into the shared root. When the removed package supplied the newer muxer, pre_uninstall can leave it paired with an older surviving hostfxr. This is not a dangling link, but it is not a version-agnostic pairing and may make the shared host unsupported.
Copy the highest-version dotnet.exe from a surviving package while runtime links remain.
