Stop the /ai-debate demo reply being cut off - #299
The live /ai-debate demo failed with "The AI opponent is unavailable right now". The function log said [DEMO] model call failed: Unterminated string in JSON at position 267.
OpenRouter counts Claude's reasoning against max_tokens, and 450 left the JSON reply cut off mid-string. This change:
pins reasoning to low effort and excludes it from the reply;
sets max_tokens with outputTokenLimit(600, "low"), as the app's own Claude calls do (unused room costs nothing);
checks finish_reason === "length" so a cut-off is logged as such instead of as a JSON parse error.

Bug Fixes
Demo rebuttals now have more room for a complete response. If a response is cut short, the demo reports the issue rather than trying to use incomplete content.
Improvements
Updated the demo’s response handling to better distinguish the final reply from the model’s internal reasoning.
This PR changes supabase/. Its debatelab-staging preview talks to staging, which runs main's migrations and Edge Functions, so this PR's backend changes are not there yet. The VPS staging sync applies them within about 5 minutes of the merge. To try them before merging, use the verify-debatelab skill against a local stack. See docs/staging.md.

Walkthrough
The demo sets low reasoning effort and calculates a token limit for model requests. It throws an error when a response ends with the length finish reason. The README description reflects these settings.

Summary
Token limits and response handling supabase/functions/demo-rebuttal/index.ts, supabase/README.md
The demo sets low reasoning effort, allows 600 tokens for the reply, and calculates the maximum token limit using a 128,000-token context limit. It excludes reasoning from returned content and throws an error if the response ends with length. The README describes the updated settings.
The demo is broadly usable, but usage accounting, provider-value logging, and token-limit documentation should be corrected before relying on the change.

Record usage before rejecting a truncated reply.
A length-limited call can be billable, but this branch logs only completion_tokens; it does not record the observed usage or a null cost. Record usage for demo calls, including this incomplete response.
As per path instructions: “Record usage for every billable provider call” and record incomplete calls with null cost. See the usage rule.

Validate the token count before logging it.
If the provider returns a string instead of a number in completion_tokens, this code writes that string to the log. That can expose provider-supplied content despite the counts-only logging contract. Log the value only after validating it as a number.
As per path instructions: “Validate complete shapes at the boundary before parsing, saving, or otherwise trusting the data.” See the boundary validation rule.

- `demo-rebuttal`: the no-login mini round on `/ai-debate`. Off unless `DEMO_ENABLED=true` and `TURNSTILE_SECRET_KEY` is set. It accepts only allowed origins, checks a Cloudflare Turnstile token before a session starts, and reserves every model call through the service-role-only `claim_demo_round_turn` RPC: 3 sessions per IP per UTC day, 2 turns per session, and `DEMO_DAILY_LIMIT` model calls per UTC day across all visitors (500 when unset). Rows keep a salted, per-day hash of the IP and counts only; nothing the visitor typed is stored or logged. One Claude Haiku call per turn with `max_tokens` 450 and no reasoning.

Describe the token allowance as headroom, not a guarantee.
The 2,048-token headroom does not prevent reasoning from consuming the reply budget. The shared helper notes that Claude can exceed its estimated reasoning share. (raw.githubusercontent.com)
As per path instructions, update the owning document to match the behavior it describes. See the documentation rule.
