Task A from the 1 November SEO spec: /best-ai-for-debate now gives the answer in the "it depends on the job" form that AI answers and the top results use. It also drops every "top pick" claim about DebateOwl.

What changed on the page

  • Answer box straight under the H1. It is the first paragraph on the page, 50 words long, and starts "Which AI is best for debate? It depends on the job." It names Perplexity and Gemini for research and DebateOwl for case prep, "If they say X, we answer Y" replies and timed rounds. The generator now fails if the box falls outside 40–60 words.
  • "Best AI per debate job" table with six rows: Research, Case drafting, Rebuttal prep, Argument mapping, Timed practice and Classroom use, two or three tools each. DebateOwl appears only in Case drafting, Rebuttal prep and Timed practice, plus its free timer under Classroom use, and each of those cells links to the DebateOwl page that backs it. DebateOwl is not listed for Research or Argument mapping.
  • Dates. The page shows "Updated 2 November 2026", and the Article JSON-LD has dateModified 2026-11-02. The sitemap reads lastmod from that value.
  • FAQPage. Adds "Is ChatGPT good for debate?", "What is the best free AI for debate practice?" and "Which AI do debate coaches use?". Removes two older questions that overlapped them, plus "What is the best AI debate app for students?", whose answer named DebateOwl as the best app.
  • No best/Add Vercel Web Analytics to project #1 claims about DebateOwl. Gone: the "Top pick" list, the "Why DebateOwl is the top pick" and "Where DebateOwl wins" headings, the old answer, and the llms.txt line. The "best free AI" answer says the DebateOwl app is paid after a 3-day trial and that only its timer and motion generator are free.
  • Unsourced competitor claims removed: the third-party debate benchmark line, "pushes back instead of just agreeing", "tends to agree with you over a long chat", and "doesn't keep a motion, side and speech times". The vendors' own pages now list memory features, so that last one no longer holds.
  • llms.txt gets a new line for the page. The meta description is updated (152 characters). The page is still static HTML from scripts/generate_seo_content.py, server-rendered with no client JS.

Sources (as of November 2026, each fetched from the vendor's own site on 2 November 2026)

Dropped: none of the requested tools. Every claim the page makes about another product traces to one of the pages above.

Checks

  • npm test (guards, including the comparison templating check): 94/94 passed.
  • npm run seo:jargon: passed.
  • npm run verify at the final head: all passed in 103.5 s (docs, jargon, typecheck, guards, lint, edge, build, smoke, sw-offline). dist/sitemap.xml has lastmod 2026-11-02 for the page.
  • Generated HTML: the answer box is the first <p> in <main> and comes right after </h1>; the table has 6 rows in the static HTML; the JSON-LD parses, with dateModified 2026-11-02 and the three new FAQ questions in FAQPage.
  • Preview: https://debatelab-staging-2zrokf1nj-adam-gaborjanis-projects.vercel.app/best-ai-for-debate (staging-pinned, behind Vercel SSO). Fetched through vercel curl, it returns 200 with HTML byte-identical to the local build. The served llms.txt and sitemap.xml have the new line and lastmod.

Merge rule

Copy and SEO only (scripts/ content generator, public/ output). It could qualify as low-risk under AGENTS.md, but this is a draft because Adam asked to approve this one. Do not merge without Adam.

Not done here: IndexNow, since that runs after a production deploy. Follow-up for a separate PR: none found. The homepage FAQ "Which AI is best for debate?" doesn't use "top pick" wording.

🤖 Generated with Claude Code

/best-ai-for-debate now opens with a 50-word answer box directly under
the H1 ("It depends on the job"), followed by a table of tools for six
debate jobs: research, case drafting, rebuttal prep, argument mapping,
timed practice and classroom use. DebateOwl is listed only for the jobs
it covers, each linked to the page that shows it.

Drops the "top pick" claims about DebateOwl and the competitor claims
that no vendor page supports. Adds three FAQ questions (ChatGPT, best
free AI, what coaches use) and dates the page 2 November 2026. Every
competitor fact was checked on the vendor's own site that day.
