Write down when a PR may merge without Adam - #278
Adam approved on 2026-10-30 that low-risk PRs merge once their gate is green. This puts the rule in AGENTS.md, where every agent, including the coordinator threads, reads it.
What changes in AGENTS.md
New "When a PR may merge without Adam" section. Copy, translations, SEO, docs, plans, tests and frontend code under src/ merge on a green gate if they don't touch auth, billing or quotas. The gate is npm run verify, the required CI and a clean review of the current head. Still waiting for Adam: anything under supabase/ or services/, auth, billing or quota code, .github/, package.json and the lockfile, vercel.json, and secrets.
Every task report ends with a "Slowed down by:" line. An audit of October's threads had to dig blockers out of 1,261 scattered sentences; one line per thread makes them easy to collect.
The manual nvm use step is gone. zsh on the VPS now puts the .nvmrc Node first on PATH. Agents ran nvm use 920 times in 100 threads in October.
Verification
npm run verify passed at this head: docs, jargon, typecheck, lint, unit, collaboration, build, smoke, sw-offline and edge (193 s).
This is a docs-only change, so it is low-risk under the rule it adds.
Clarified that the VPS already uses Node 22, while other environments should select the version specified by the project using nvm use.
Added guidance for reporting task delays and criteria for merging certain low-risk changes. These updates affect setup and contribution workflows; they do not change app functionality.
Adam approved on 2026-10-30 that low-risk PRs merge once their gate is
green: copy, translations, SEO, docs, plans, tests and frontend code with no
effect on auth, billing or quotas. Anything under supabase/ or services/,
CI, dependencies, production config and secrets still waits for his OK.
AGENTS.md also asks every agent to end its report with a "Slowed down by:"
line, so environment problems surface instead of being worked around, and
drops the manual `nvm use` step: zsh on the VPS now picks Node from .nvmrc.

Walkthrough
AGENTS.md updates Node setup instructions and task report requirements. It also defines criteria for merging Adam-approved low-risk PRs and lists changes that still require Adam’s approval.

The VPS setup guidance now refers to Node 22. Other environments should run nvm use. Task reports must end with a Slowed down by: line describing the main time cost or blocker and what would remove it, or nothing.

Summary
Low-risk merge criteria AGENTS.md
Adam-approved low-risk PRs may merge after the defined gate is green if the changed files meet the listed criteria. The policy excludes frontend changes that affect auth, billing, or quotas and lists changes that still require Adam’s approval.
The policy could be changed without Adam’s approval, including changes to its protected-path list. Protect those changes before merging.

Explanation
The title "Write down when a PR may merge without Adam" matches the main change. The PR adds a merge policy to AGENTS.md that defines when Adam-approved low-risk PRs may merge once the gate is green, and it lists the changes that still need Adam's approval. The title is short and specific. It does not mention the secondary changes (the "Slowed down by:" report line and the removal of the manual nvm use step), which is acceptable because the title only needs to name the primary change.

Explanation
No eligible functions found in the changed files. Skipping docstring coverage check. Docstring coverage is scoped to functions touched by this diff with cyclomatic complexity of at least 2. Documentation-only edits and deletions within surviving functions are included; unchanged diff context and fully deleted functions are excluded. Analyzed 0 functions across 0 files. Adam approved this on 2026-10-30. A PR is low-risk, and merges once its gate is green, when every changed file is copy, translations, SEO metadata, docs, plans, tests, or frontend code under `src/` with no effect on auth, billing, or quotas. The gate is `npm run verify` at the final head, the required CI checks, and a review of the current head with every finding fixed or answered.

Require Adam's approval for policy-file changes.
AGENTS.md is a documentation file, so this condition also allows a future PR to change the merge policy or protected-path list without Adam. The current PR's approval does not protect later edits. Add AGENTS.md and other merge-policy files to the explicit approval list, or exclude policy files from the low-risk categories. (github.com)
