Summary

  • add a first-class debate sparring mode with School 4-6-6-3 as the default format
  • model the Introductor, R1, R2, and Conclusor roles across coaching, AI prompts, judging, history, scorecards, and exports
  • preserve Lincoln-Douglas and Public Forum rules and migrate legacy in-progress sparring rounds
  • harden timer enforcement, persistence validation, erase fencing, integrity-key separation, and atomic score claims
  • fix the deployed DebateLab logo and reset mobile scroll to Turn 1 when a round starts

Verification

  • lint
  • typecheck
  • 870 Vitest tests with coverage
  • 90.13% statement and 93.98% line coverage
  • 103 Deno backend tests
  • Deno typecheck for the AI Edge Function
  • Node production build
  • ten desktop/mobile sparring and Crossfire Playwright flows after merging current main
  • deployed Vercel preview checked at desktop and Pixel 5 sizes
  • deployed logo decoded at 1024 by 1024 with no horizontal overflow
  • live schema-conformant AI Conclusor response from the original implementation verification

CI exception

GitHub Actions did not start a runner for this head. GitHub reported that recent account payments failed or the spending limit must be increased. No workflow step ran. The full local verification above is the substitute allowed by the repository's babysit-PR policy.

Deployment note

The sparring migrations and Edge Function changes are included in this PR but have not been applied or deployed to production.

Merge Risk: 🟡 Moderate · up to 603f4

This PR adds debate sparring and related crossfire functionality, but the current head is not yet merge-ready because authentication transitions can expose stale local sparring data, the Crossfire page route is unreachable, and request cancellation can hang during authentication; it also ties transcript integrity tokens to a high-privilege database credential. These issues should be fixed or explicitly accepted before merging.

In `@e2e/sparring.spec.ts`:
- Line 80: Update the opponent-response assertion in the test loop to derive the
expected response number from the loop index rather than the concurrently
mutated responseNumber counter. Keep the displayed numbering one-based so each
iteration matches the corresponding page text deterministically.

In `@plans/sparring-and-streaming.md`:
- Line 97: Add a blank line immediately after the “Original Estimated Effort”
heading before the following list to satisfy Markdown heading-spacing
requirements.

In `@src/components/features/sparring/SparringRound.tsx`:
- Line 85: Update useSparringStore’s submitUserSpeech action to reject
submissions whenever timerDeadline has passed, before recording the speech or
advancing the session. Keep both SparringRound submission paths using this
centralized validation, and add a secondary UI guard to prevent submitting after
expiration.

In `@src/lib/stores/sparring-store.ts`:
- Around line 241-243: Update setDraft so typing does not synchronously persist
the full store on every keystroke, using a debounce for draft persistence; also
ensure savedSessions is excluded from the persisted slice or capped in
mergeSessions to prevent unbounded sessionStorage growth.
- Around line 382-383: Update the persistence configuration alongside
migratePersistedSparringState so rehydration always parses and rebuilds
persisted data through PersistedSparringStateSchema, while retaining migrate for
legacy versions. Add a merge handler that applies the validated rebuilt state
and preserves the current runtime state shape, including refreshed turns from
TURN_TEMPLATES.

In `@src/pages/SparringPage.tsx`:

opponent-turn AI effect to rely on aiRequestRef for stale-result protection:
remove active from the catch/finally guards and remove the cleanup that sets
active false. Apply the same change to the judging request effect at lines
180-189 so failures update judgingError and loading state. Memoize the config
value near line 71 with useMemo to prevent unnecessary effect reruns.
- Line 246: Update the speech submission handler in SparringPage so it handles a
null result from submitUserSpeech, displaying clear feedback when the input is
rejected while preserving normal successful submission behavior; alternatively,
enforce the store’s 6,000-character limit in the speech input.

In `@src/test/pages/SparringPage.test.tsx`:
- Around line 235-240: Restore the window.matchMedia global after the test by
replacing the direct assignment with vi.stubGlobal and adding an afterEach hook
alongside beforeEach that calls vi.unstubAllGlobals(). Keep the existing
reduced-motion matching behavior while ensuring later tests receive the original
global implementation.

In `@src/test/sparring-ai.test.ts`:
- Line 52: Update the SparringInputSchema boundary test to generate 12 distinct,
sequential speeches and assert that parsing succeeds, then generate 13 distinct,
sequential speeches and assert that parsing fails. Ensure the failure is
attributable to the speech-count limit rather than duplicate identifiers or
invalid turn ordering.

In `@supabase/functions/ai/index.ts`:
- Around line 853-857: Replace supabaseServiceKey as the signing secret in
verifySparringTranscriptIntegrity and createSparringSpeechIntegrityToken with a
dedicated SPARRING_INTEGRITY_SECRET. Require this secret during startup and fail
closed when absent; optionally support previous secrets for verification while
signing only with the current secret.

In `@supabase/functions/ai/prompt-builder.test.ts`:
- Around line 117-118: Add test coverage in the prompt-builder tests for
boundedSparringTranscript using an oversized transcript and assert that
truncation occurs, then add a separate score-action case without currentTurn and
assert the prompt contains “Current Turn: none for scoring”.

In `@supabase/functions/ai/sparring-persistence.test.ts`:
- Line 78: Update the top-level field assertion in the normalization test to use
an OR condition, so the test throws when either “winner” or “verdict” exists in
normalized; preserve the existing error behavior and normalizeSparringOutput
coverage.

In `@supabase/functions/ai/sparring-persistence.ts`:
- Around line 408-429: Remove the unused production exports
buildCompletedSparringSessionRow and findCompletedSparringScorecard, along with
their tests, after confirming neither is an external API. Preserve all other
persistence behavior and unrelated exports.
- Around line 437-448: Generate a Supabase Database schema type and instantiate
createClient with Database in index.ts, removing the production
unknown-to-SparringDatabase cast. Update the persistence functions to accept the
typed Supabase client, while retaining SparringDatabase only for test doubles.

In `@supabase/migrations/20260830000000_complete_sparring_sessions.sql`:
- Around line 34-35: Change the idx_sparring_sessions_user_updated creation to
use CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY so sparring_sessions remains available during the
build; if migrations are transactional, move this statement into its own
non-transactional migration file, and retain IF NOT EXISTS.
- Line 83: Update the erase-fence check in the session-claim function so it no
longer compares p_request_started_at with v_cleared_at from different clocks.
Use a database-derived request timestamp or, preferably, a per-user
clear-generation value captured when the round starts and rejected when the
stored generation has advanced; update the corresponding edge-function request
flow to pass and use that value.

Addressed the 16 inline findings in 3ff9eb7 and the follow-up preview issue in 9c7892f.

Implemented:

  • deterministic browser assertions and Markdown spacing
  • deadline enforcement in the store and UI, plus rejection feedback
  • debounced draft persistence, a 50-session history cap, and validation on every rehydrate
  • request-key-based AI error handling with memoized provider configuration
  • isolated matchMedia tests and precise 12/13-speech boundary coverage
  • a dedicated SPARRING_INTEGRITY_SECRET path with a domain-separated fallback and legacy-token verification
  • real oversized-transcript and score-prompt tests
  • stricter normalization assertions and removal of unused persistence exports
  • a focused typed Supabase schema client without the previous unknown cast
  • an isolated CREATE INDEX CONCURRENTLY IF NOT EXISTS migration, supported by the current Supabase CLI's standalone handling for pipeline-incompatible statements
  • a database-clock RPC for the erase fence, eliminating edge-host clock comparisons

Verification on 3ff9eb7: 821 Vitest tests, 92 Deno tests, lint, TypeScript, Deno typecheck, production build, and six desktop/mobile Playwright tests passed. The deployed preview also exposed a retained-scroll mobile issue; 9c7892f resets new rounds to Turn 1 and the focused unit and six browser tests passed again.

The docstring-coverage item is a CodeRabbit advisory, not a repository check. Adding comments to roughly 97 functions would be unrelated churn and would conflict with the repository's focused-change policy, so I did not manufacture docstrings to satisfy that metric.

Fence local sparring data on the first authenticated transition.

The reset at Line 179 is inside if (prevUserId && prevUserId !== nextUserId). When prevUserId is undefined, sign-in skips resetSparringStore(). Sparring state is persisted locally, and hydrateSavedSessions merges fetched rows into existing savedSessions; stale state from an earlier user or an unowned session can therefore appear under the new user.

Store an owner ID with persisted sparring state. Clear state when the owner differs or is unowned before hydrateStores(nextUserId). Do not use prevUserId truthiness as the ownership check.

Register /app/crossfire before preloading or testing it.

The supplied src/App.tsx route list has no /app/crossfire entry. The wildcard route therefore renders NotFound for this URL. This matrix entry can test the fallback page instead of Crossfire, and the preloader downloads an unreachable page chunk.

  • e2e/authed-pages.spec.ts#L9-L9: retain this route entry after adding the protected CrossfirePage route in src/App.tsx.
  • src/offline-route-preload.ts#L8-L8: retain this preloader after the same route registration makes the page reachable.

Validate each prompt-source record before bounding it.

boundPromptSources assumes that source.content is a string. Normal feature requests cast rawSources to PromptSource[] without runtime validation in supabase/functions/ai/index.ts. A request with sources: [{}] or sources: [null] reaches this line and throws, which converts invalid client input into a 500 response.

Validate the record and all fields before this function uses them. Cap title, origin, and type too, because those fields are appended to the system prompt outside the content budget.

Start timeout and caller cancellation before the session lookup.

callSupabaseAI awaits supabase.auth.getSession() at Line 302 before Line 331 creates the controller and starts the deadline. If that lookup remains pending, options.signal cannot cancel it and REQUEST_TIMEOUT_MS does not apply. Addressed the merged-head findings in b79466b: accessible navigation names, owner-fenced sparring persistence on first sign-in and user switches, cancellable session lookup under the existing request timeout, runtime validation and metadata bounds for prompt sources, and the Hungarian Crossfire label. The /app/crossfire route finding was not applicable: the route is already registered in src/App.tsx, and both desktop/mobile Crossfire browser flows pass.
