fix(mcp-store): re-list tools when a gateway call names an unregistered one - #105115
Conversation
…ed one The gateway resolves every tools/call against the installation's cached tool rows, and refuses a call whose tool has no row. Those rows are only written at install time, on reconnect, and by the UI's refresh button, so an installation whose connect-time listing failed refuses every call until a person notices and presses refresh. Re-list once on a miss, throttled per installation, and retry the connect-time listing instead of dropping it. The refusal now also logs, which it never did.

472-472: 🩺 Stability & Availability | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick winUse a shorter failure backoff for cache-miss resyncs.
resync_installation_toolssets the Redis key for 60 minutes before callingsync_installation_tools. If that call raisesToolsFetchError, the function only logs the error and returnsFalse; it does not shorten or delete the key. Later cache-miss requests therefore cannot retry automatic discovery until the remaining TTL expires, even after upstream recovers.Keep the 60-minute throttle after successful syncs, but use a bounded shorter failure backoff or schedule a retry after
ToolsFetchError. The existingsync_installation_tools_taskuses bounded retries with a 30-second backoff and a 600-second maximum. “Refresh tools” remains a manual bypass.🤖 Prompt for AI Agents

A row marked removed satisfied the presence check on both repair paths, so a tool the upstream server brought back under the same name stayed refused until someone pressed "Refresh tools". Treat such a row as a miss. A handshake that fails with a malformed reply or a redirect loop raised an httpx error rather than ToolsFetchError, which turned a refused tool call into a 500 now that the listing runs inside the request. Normalize it. A listing that failed held the throttle key for the full hour even though it refreshed nothing, so one transient fault shut both repair paths long after the server recovered. Shorten the key to a failure-specific window. Generated-By: PostHog Desktop Task-Id: b346e30e-aa23-48df-82ea-a11d06fa0cb0

stamping to unblock, though the posthog review comments seem legit (however, i still have p low context)
…writes A listing name that is not a string passed the truthiness filter and then hit an unhashable-key TypeError inside the sync, which is a 500 once the sync runs on the request path. Drop the entry instead. The install task, "Refresh tools" and the request-path repair can overlap, and the loser of the (installation, tool_name) unique constraint raised an IntegrityError nothing catches. Create rows with get_or_create. Bound the unregistered-tool log: a batch carries as many names as the body allows, and the proxy size limit is checked after policy enforcement. Problem
Tool 'x' is not registered for this installation.tools/callagainst the installation's cached tool rows, whiletools/listpasses through to the upstream server untouched. The agent sees live tools the gateway holds no rows for.Origin: Slack thread.
Changes
call_member_server_toolgets the same repair, so the PostHog MCP and canvases do not keep their own dead end.Note
A freshly listed tool arrives as
needs_approval, so the first call after a repair can return the approval error rather than succeeding. That is the normal gate, not a second failure. The proxy could fill the rows from the
tools/listresponses it already forwards. Those are often SSE streams it never buffers, so that needs a tee, and the re-listing costs one handshake on a miss instead.Related: #103110 surfaces a failed listing in the Desktop UI, and does not change what the gateway does with the empty rows.

The session started from a report that MCP servers connected in Desktop were unusable from cloud task runs. Install telemetry put the affected connections inside the window when #102376 blocked external MCP egress, which framed the bug as a registry that can stay empty with no repair path rather than as a stale cache. The throttle started at one minute and moved to an hour on review.
