@e-koch not sure, but also we don't want to merge this, since apparently protobuf needs to be pinned at this earlier version for compatability with Google Colab |

Do we need it as a dependency if that's the only place it's used? |

@e-koch uhh I'm not sure. It was a dependency pre-pip, so I ported it over, but maybe we can just remove it now |
