📝 WalkthroughWalkthroughThe change adds a lazy DFA for eligible programs and advances the serialized program format to version 15. The DFA uses caller-owned cache storage and returns match results or declines. Compiler validation, evaluator comparisons, seeded fuzzing, and CI checks cover the new implementation. ChangesLazy DFA

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to This release adds a lazy automaton that answers whether a pattern matches and where the match lies, with captures still computed by the existing evaluator. No production defect is established. One gap remains in the test harness: the fuzz check can silently drop a disagreement between the automaton and the evaluator on patterns where Node times out. The change is mergeable, but that check should be fixed so it reliably catches such disagreements. 🚥 Pre-merge checks | ✅ 4 | ❌ 1❌ Failed checks (1 warning)

Review comments at @tools/check-dfa-fuzz.mjs:
- Line 134: Move the `mismatches` collection in the check-DFA flow to before the
`timedOut` deletion loop, so `dfa-mismatch` outcomes are counted even when Node
times out. Keep deleting timed-out rows from `actual` and `expected` for the
Node comparison, and remove the later `mismatches` declaration.

…wned storage
A new module, dfa, answers whether a program matches (is_match) and the span
of group zero (find) with a deterministic automaton built while it searches:
states from the program's instructions on first visit, transitions over
character classes found lazily, all in u32 storage the host allocates, sizes,
may move between calls and keeps one of per program. Nothing is generated and
no program grows beyond one header bit.
Leftmost-first priority is kept by ordered thread lists (the evaluator's
exploration order, with repeat counters and empty-iteration bits in a 32-bit
key); the start comes from a reverse pass over the same instructions. A full
cache clears and continues; three thrashing clears disable it until reset.
Captures still come from the evaluator, started at the automaton's start.
From the start state with no context, the steady path skips with the
evaluator's own candidate scans: the leading claim's byte pairs, or the
first-character descriptor's bytes four words to a branch. Over WTF-8 it
passes over non-ASCII characters whose cached transition keeps the start
state, and over all of them when the cache's build found that no first
instruction accepts one; UTF-16 positions are counted only for a match end.
The reverse pass has a steady path over ASCII storage.
Program format 15: word 7 bit 25 marks programs the automaton decides exactly
(no backreferences, lookaround or properties of strings, repeat counters that
fit), derived by the compiler and re-derived on validation. Format 14 is
rejected. The evaluator's answers and costs are unchanged.
AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md: one semantics, two exact executors. The automaton
answers exactly what the evaluator answers, enforced by the differential and
fuzz CI with the automaton off, roomy and at its minimum cache, and declines
rather than approximates; captures always come from the evaluator.

Release 0.1.13: a lazy automaton answers match/no-match and match bounds from host-owned storage. Program format goes to 15. No existing API changes.

Three thrashing clears in a row disable it untildfa::reset.AGENTS.mdandCLAUDE.mdchange from "one matcher, no fallbacks" to "one semantics, two exact executors", with the owner's approval (2026-10-08). The automaton must answer exactly what the VM answers, and it declines rather than approximates.Per-search instructions (callgrind; the 129-instruction binding is included):
