feat(desktop, cli): switch to let your cloud workspaces reach a host - #9409
Stack: 3 of 3 — #9407 (DB) → #9408 (API + relay) → this PR. Merge after #9408, once the API is live.
Summary
Desktop: Settings → Hosts → [host] → Cloud workspaces switch, shown to the host's owner on every host they own. It sits behind a confirm dialog that spells out the risk. Nothing restarts.
CLI: from a cloud workspace, --host calls go to the relay with no bearer, so the firewall-added workspace credential is what gets checked. Before, it sent an empty Bearer , which the relay rejected and the CLI showed as "Session expired".
How It Works
The switch reads allowCloudWorkspaces from host.roster (defaults to false if the API is older) and writes it with host.setCloudWorkspaceAccess, then invalidates the roster.
It's owner-only, so the owner can open a machine they aren't sitting at. Non-owners don't see it.
The CLI only drops the Authorization header when the bearer is empty. That happens only in a cloud workspace.
Manual QA (dev desktop over CDP, real clicks)
Settings → Hosts → this host shows the "Cloud workspaces" section, switch off, for the owner
Toggle on → dialog → Allow → "Setting saved"; a box call now returns 200
Toggle off → dialog → Turn off → the next box call is refused (403)
Host-service processes kept running through both toggles (same pids, uptime kept counting)
Not verified: the desktop typecheck (killed by the sandbox memory guard; CI is the first run)
Testing
bun test in packages/cli (482, including a test that a cloud workspace's relay call carries no Authorization)
bun test for desktop settings routes (107)
bun run typecheck in packages/cli
bun run check:i18n (7 new strings, translated in all locales)
The CLI change is safe against any relay: an older relay still answers 401.
Boxes on CLI 2.0.3 already work against the new relay, because an empty bearer is treated like none.
Rollback
Revert this PR. The switch disappears; hosts already opened stay open until the column is set back.
Summary by cubic
Lets host owners allow their cloud workspaces to reach a host they own, and fixes the CLI so those calls succeed instead of failing with "Session expired". The switch needs the merged #9408 API and relay live; older relays still answer 401, so the CLI change is safe on its own.
New Features
Settings → Hosts → [host] shows a "Cloud workspaces" switch for the host's owner, guarded by a confirm dialog that spells out the risk. It's discoverable via Settings search, surfaces the server's localized errors, keeps a steady dialog text while closing, and drops a pending confirmation when switching hosts or organizations.
The switch reads allowCloudWorkspaces from the roster and writes it via host.setCloudWorkspaceAccess; no host services restart.
Bug Fixes
When the bearer is empty (cloud workspaces carry no user token), --host calls no longer send an empty Bearer header, so the relay checks the firewall-added workspace credential instead of rejecting the request.
Written for commit 8e240f4. Summary will update on new commits.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Host owners can manage whether cloud workspaces may access their host through the relay. Changes require confirmation, with loading, success, and error feedback.
Confirmation prompts explain that access can allow cloud workspaces to create workspaces, start agents, and run commands on the host.
Added searchable settings and localized interface text for this access control.
Bug Fixes
Remote host requests no longer send an empty authorization header.
Whether a host's owner lets their cloud workspaces reach it through the
relay. Defaults to false, so every existing host stays closed. A constant
default on Postgres 11+ is metadata-only: no table rewrite.
A cloud workspace holds no user token, so `superset hosts list` from a box
showed every host offline and `--host` calls failed as "Session expired".
- host.list asks the relay for presence with a short-lived server token
when the caller has no bearer (a box, or an API key).
- host.setCloudWorkspaceAccess: owner-only switch for
v2_hosts.allow_cloud_workspaces. Not on the sandbox allow-list, so a box
cannot open a host to itself.
- host.cloudWorkspaceAccess: the relay's per-call check for a box's
credential: the creator has access to the host and the host is open.
- The sandbox firewall adds the workspace credential on requests to the
relay host too, so nothing enters the box.
- host.list and host.roster report allowCloudWorkspaces (additive).
With no bearer and the firewall-added workspace credential, the relay asks
the API on every call whether the box may reach this host, and refuses
with a message that says so when the host is closed. A box gets HTTP only:
the firewall refuses WebSocket upgrades on hosts it rewrites, and a stream
would outlive the per-call check. The credential never reaches the host.
Settings → Hosts → [host] → Cloud workspaces, shown to the host's owner on
every host they own. It calls host.setCloudWorkspaceAccess behind a confirm
dialog that spells out the risk; nothing restarts, and turning it off stops
the next call from a box.
A box has no user token. Sending `Authorization: Bearer ` with nothing in it
made the relay answer 401, which the CLI showed as "Session expired". With no
bearer the firewall-added workspace credential is what the relay checks.
Desktop host settings add an owner-only control for cloud workspace access, with confirmation, mutation feedback, search support, and translations. CLI relay HTTP requests omit the Authorization header when the user JWT is empty.

Review: minor issues. The approach is correct. The CLI fix has a test, and that test fails without the fix. Two small UI defects remain, and the stack is blocked on a mobile typecheck failure from #9408.
MinorCloudWorkspaceAccessSwitch.tsx:34-35: err.message ?? … skips the server's i18nKey (onlyTheHostOwnerCanAllowCloudWorkspaces). Use errorMessage(err, t(…)).
MinorCloudWorkspaceAccessConfirmDialog.tsx:26-70: one targetEnabled value controls both open and content. On close, the "Allow" dialog flips to the "Turn off" text during the 200 ms fade-out. Keep open as a separate state, as RemoteAccessSwitch does.
NoteresolveHostTarget.ts:116: the WS token is still "" from a box. The relay refuses WS from a cloud workspace by design. Does the CLI show that reason to the user?
Verified: CLI tests (482 pass), CLI and desktop typecheck, desktop settings tests (107 pass), check:i18n. Not verified: the switch and dialog in the desktop app. This workspace's DB lacks the #9407 column, so host.roster fails there.
host.roster rows now carry allowCloudWorkspaces, and the row mobile builds
for a cloud workspace's own sandbox has to match. A sandbox is not a host
its owner opened, so false.
host.cloudWorkspaceAccess matched any v2_users_hosts row, so once an owner
opened a host, the boxes of every member they had added could drive it too.
The decision is now a pure function that requires the owner role, with tests
for owner, member, closed, cross-org and non-box callers.
Also use the catalog's existing German term for host owner.
…ges retryable
- A box's WebSocket upgrade and a credential that is not the shape the API
mints are refused without an API round trip.
- A failed access check (API unreachable) is INTERNAL_SERVER_ERROR on the
host tRPC routes, not UNAUTHORIZED, so callers retry instead of
treating it as an auth failure.
… copy
- The switch shows errorMessage(err), so the server's i18nKey for the
owner-only refusal is used instead of raw English.
- The confirm dialog keeps open/closed apart from its content, so closing
"Allow" no longer flips to the "Turn off" text during the fade-out.
- "use --host to run commands on this host" instead of calling a flag a
command, retranslated; a more idiomatic Dutch title.
- Settings search finds the switch under host, hosts, access and owner.

Cover the fallback relay with the workspace credential policy.
If the API uses relay2.superset.sh and the relay lookup fails, the CLI falls back to relay.superset.sh. The firewall does not inject the credential for that host, so the call returns 401. Ensure the fallback relay is covered by the credential policy.

If the remote client stops sending bearer tokens, the empty-token test will still pass. Add a remote request with a nonempty userJwt and assert that the relay receives Authorization: Bearer <jwt>. Without that header, ordinary remote calls can receive 401.

Filter the host search match by ownership.
When a user is a member but not an owner of any host, searching for cloud workspace access still shows a Hosts match. The host page then has no matching control. Exclude this match when the user owns no accessible host.

Not changing this. The settings search index is static and isn't filtered by role for any entry. The host page shows the switch only to owners, which is where the access rule is enforced.
The reason will be displayed to describe this comment to others. Learn more.
@harshithmullapudi Understood. The search index can show a match without an available control, consistent with its current role-independent design. I won’t pursue role-based filtering here.
The host settings route keeps its component when navigating between hosts,
so a confirmation opened for one host could apply to the next. Key the
section by host so switching hosts drops the pending dialog.
Also test that a signed-in CLI still sends its bearer to the relay.
Fallback relay not covered by the firewall: not changing. The CLI falls back to env.RELAY_URL only when the API's host.relayEndpoint lookup fails. The firewall rule is built from the same RELAY_URL the API returns, and a box that can't reach the API also fails the relay's per-call access check, so covering the fallback host wouldn't make the call succeed.

allowCloudWorkspacesfromhost.roster(defaults tofalseif the API is older) and writes it withhost.setCloudWorkspaceAccess, then invalidates the roster.Authorizationheader when the bearer is empty. That happens only in a cloud workspace.Manual QA (dev desktop over CDP, real clicks)

New Features
allowCloudWorkspacesfrom the roster and writes it viahost.setCloudWorkspaceAccess; no host services restart.Bug Fixes
--hostcalls no longer send an emptyBearerheader, so the relay checks the firewall-added workspace credential instead of rejecting the request.Written for commit 8e240f4. Summary will update on new commits.
