feat(github): connect multiple GitHub organizations to one Paradev organization - #9396
A Paradev organization can now connect several GitHub organizations or accounts. Migration 0191 drops the github_installations_org_unique constraint, and every server read now covers all of the organization's installations.
UI: the web GitHub integration page lists every connected account, each with its own Disconnect, plus an Add GitHub organization button. Desktop Integrations settings show every connected account. The CLI integrations github status / connect / disconnect --account handles several accounts.
tRPC changes are additive: new integration.github.listInstallations, an optional installationId on disconnect and triggerSync, and getInstallation kept as @deprecated.
Why / Context
A Team-plan customer cancelled about 1h45m after subscribing: "only 1 github org, too limiting".
The limit was structural, not billing. There is no plan or Autumn limit on the number of orgs; packages/shared/src/billing.ts only gates GitHub at pro. What limited us:
github_installations had unique("github_installations_org_unique").on(organizationId).
/api/github/callback upserted with target: organizationId, so connecting a second GitHub account overwrote the first.
About ten read paths did githubInstallations.findFirst({ where: organizationId }).
How It Works
Schema (0191_github_installations_multiple_per_org.sql):DROP CONSTRAINT github_installations_org_unique, then CREATE INDEX github_installations_org_id_idx. installation_id stays globally unique, so one GitHub installation still belongs to exactly one Paradev org.
Callback (saveInstallation):INSERT … ON CONFLICT (installation_id) DO UPDATE … WHERE organization_id = $org.
A new GitHub account adds a row.
Reinstalling or reconfiguring the same installation updates its row.
An installation owned by another org returns no row, so the callback exits with save_failed. The existing already_connected pre-check still runs first.
Reads:
Repos and PRs filter on github_repositories.organization_id, which already existed (denormalized for Electric).
findInstalledRepository loads the repo's own installation, so a PR on an org-B repo uses org B's token.
The people picker, triggerSync, and the plan-upgrade backfill run per installation.
connectionStatus reports connected if any installation is active.
organizationInstallations(orgId) orders active installations first, then oldest first. Released clients that still call getInstallation therefore get a stable account, and an active one when one exists.
Unchanged: webhooks, suspension, the suspend job, and initial-sync already key on the installation.

Migration applied to this workspace's own Neon branch (br-winter-art-afjsvz0n, a non-default child branch), using the production PGOPTIONS (lock_timeout=5s, statement_timeout=60s).
saveInstallation against real Postgres on that branch:
A third account was added.
A reinstall updated the same row.
Another org claiming the installation was refused, and the row was unchanged.
A per-account delete left the other accounts in place.
Running dev server (web :3000 + API :3001): signed in as the dev user and verified:
/integrations/github shows two accounts and repos from both.
The per-account disconnect dialog appears.
"Add GitHub organization" returns a 302 to github.com/apps/superset-app-dev/installations/new?state=…&redirect_url=…/api/github/callback.
Not run: a real GitHub install round-trip. This workspace's GH_APP_PRIVATE_KEY holds only its first line, so the API cannot mint GitHub tokens here, and the headless browser could not reach github.com. Demo installations were seeded on the dev branch instead.
Independent review: findings and fixes
A separate review agent read the diff and searched the rest of the repo. It found no cross-org security hole and no drizzle semantics mistake. It confirmed the callback upsert: a race between two orgs ends in save_failed, and the installation is not taken over.
Fixed in de42b587:
Released CLI disconnect deleted every account. Old CLIs confirm the account getInstallation shows, then send disconnect({ organizationId }) with no id. That call now removes only that account.
Verified against the dev API: with 3 accounts connected, the old-shape call removed only the one getInstallation returned.
Verified: another org's installation id with your own org returns No installation found, and that row is untouched.
Initial sync left a repo on its old installation. When a repo moved between accounts, the sync updated its organization_id but kept its installation_id. Initial sync and the dev sync now update both.
Open, and not fixed here:
CLI connect: if the user picks an account that is already installed, GitHub sends back the same installation id. The CLI waits for a new one and times out after 10 minutes. The web flow is unaffected.
Desktop "Configure" link: in the new-workspace repo picker it opens only the first account's GitHub App settings.
Stale rows: a reinstall used to overwrite the org's single row. Now, if GitHub's uninstall webhook is missed, a dead row stays until someone disconnects it in the UI.
Pre-existing: the callback trusts installation_id from the URL, so an org member can claim an installation that no Paradev org owns yet.
Migration safety (db-migrations checklist)
Size:github_installations is 1.8 MB with 3,277 rows on the production-copy branch, one per org.
Locks: no column type change and no FK change. DROP CONSTRAINT takes a brief ACCESS EXCLUSIVE lock on this small table only, and no parent tables are locked. The table is not in the hot list. No load rehearsal was run, per the skill: it touches only a small table that no job holds open.
Ordering:deploy-api and deploy-web both needs: deploy-database, so the code that inserts a second row never runs before the constraint is gone.
Deviation from repo rules, at the requester's ask: the migration ships in the same PR as the tRPC additions, against packages/trpc/AGENTS.md rule 10. The tRPC changes are additive only, so a revert of the code alone stays safe (see Rollback).
tRPC compatibility
Inputs: only new optional fields. Released clients send none and get the old whole-org behavior.
Outputs: shapes, columns, and error codes are unchanged.
getInstallation is kept, and still used by released desktop and CLI builds. They keep working, and see one account.
New listInstallations: called by web (deploys with the API), desktop settings, and CLI. Desktop and CLI pick it up in their next release, after this API is live.
Known Limitations / Follow-ups
Cloud workspaces spanning two GitHub accounts (installationTokenFor in packages/trpc/src/lib/sandbox/repositories.ts): when the creator has not connected their own GitHub, the box gets one installation token. That token comes from the first repo's account, and private repos from a second account in the same workspace will not clone. The creator's own token (the default) is unaffected. The fix needs per-owner credentials at the egress firewall.
Sidebar PR chips across orgs:getByBranches across orgs is covered by the organization-wide repo filter, but not exercised against real GitHub data.
Docs:apps/docs CLI reference is not updated for disconnect --account. The docs site documents only released CLI behavior, so update it with the next CLI release.
Dev only:POST /api/github/sync (development only) still syncs one installation.
Risks / Rollout / Rollback
Risk: low to medium.
With one installation per org, which is every org today, every changed query returns the same rows.
New exposure: orgs can now hold several installations, so the multi-installation paths above are live.
Rollback:
Revert the code first. The old code still works with the constraint gone, but its callback upsert targets organization_id, which has no unique constraint after 0191. That makes the old callback fail, though nothing else breaks.
If a code revert is needed, re-add the constraint only after removing extra rows per org. Do not re-add it while any org has two rows.
Prefer a forward fix.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Connect multiple GitHub organizations or personal accounts to one workspace, and view each installation’s status.
Add or disconnect accounts individually. The CLI can target a specific account when disconnecting.
Browse repositories and people across connected accounts, and sync one or all installations.
Improvements
Suspended installations no longer count as active connections.
Disconnecting an account stops syncing its repositories without affecting other connected accounts.
Translations
Updated GitHub integration guidance and account-specific messaging across supported languages.
…nstallations
Reads that picked the organization's one installation now read across all
of them: repositories and pull requests by organization, the people picker
per installation, connection status from any active installation, and the
billing backfill and triggerSync per installation. Adds listInstallations and
an optional installationId on disconnect and triggerSync. The install
callback upserts on installation_id; until the migration that drops
github_installations_org_unique ships, a second account still replaces the
first.
This change enables multiple GitHub installations per organization. It updates installation storage, API and sync behavior, repository lookups, web and desktop settings, CLI commands, and localized account-specific messages.
Changes: Multiple GitHub installations
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Installation storage and callback packages/db/src/schema/github.ts, packages/db/drizzle/0191_github_installations_multiple_per_org.sql, packages/db/drizzle/meta/_journal.json, apps/api/src/app/api/github/callback/...
The schema and migration replace the organization-level unique constraint with a non-unique index. The callback uses saveInstallation to write installation data and handle installation-ID conflicts.
Installation APIs and repository sync packages/trpc/src/router/integration/github/*, packages/trpc/src/router/integration/connection-status.ts, apps/api/src/app/api/github/{jobs/initial-sync,sync}/route.ts, packages/auth/src/lib/billing/subscription-events.ts
The integration API lists installations, supports installation-specific disconnects and syncs, and queries repositories by organization. Repository conflict updates set the current installation ID. Repository lookup, trigger options, connection status, and billing sync resumption now account for multiple installations. Tests cover repository lookup results and error cases.
Web and desktop installation interfaces apps/web/src/app/(app)/(page)/integrations/github/..., apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/settings/integrations/..., packages/i18n/locales/*/messages.po
The web interface displays installation rows, supports adding accounts and disconnecting an individual installation, and shows suspended status. Desktop settings display active account logins and derive connection state from active installations. Locale catalogs add account-specific labels and disconnection messages.
The connect and status commands report multiple accounts. The disconnect command selects an account by login or selects the only connected installation when there is one.

Review verdict: minor issues. The approach and the 3-part split are sound. I ran the callback's 23505 fallback against real Postgres (PGlite) with the exact Drizzle chain, and every case behaves as the description says.
Minor (tRPC compat):packages/trpc/src/router/integration/github/github.ts:52-70: disconnect with no installationId deletes every installation. Released clients (the CLI at packages/cli/src/commands/integrations/github/disconnect/command.ts:34, the web ConnectionControls) show one account from getInstallation, so after part 2 they would remove all accounts, and their repos through the cascade. Suggest deleting only the getInstallation pick when no id is given, or recording that this is deliberate.
Nit:packages/trpc/src/router/integration/github/trigger-options.ts:62 (and the triggerSync loop): suspended installations are still iterated. Each one costs a token mint that fails with 403 and a warning. They are caught and skipped, so this is not a bug. Filter !suspended.
Nit:apps/api/src/app/api/github/callback/route.ts:104: the fallback has no automated test. The PGlite run covers it; still do the dev-Neon manual QA, because the Neon HTTP driver is what runs in production.
Tests: trpc 868 pass, auth 91 pass; typecheck is clean in trpc, auth and api at 66f73c08. CI is green (the CLI build was still pending).
…anization
Drops github_installations_org_unique (migration 0190) so an organization
can hold one installation per GitHub account. The install callback no longer
needs the replace fallback. The web GitHub integration page lists every
connected account with its own disconnect and an Add GitHub organization
button; desktop settings show every connected account; the CLI lists them,
waits for the new one on connect, and disconnects one by --account.

feat(github): connect multiple GitHub organizations to one Paradev organization

… repo on its installation
Released CLIs confirm the account getInstallation shows, then call
disconnect without an id; that deleted every connected account. It now
removes only that one. The initial and dev syncs now move a repo's
installation_id along with its organization_id, so a repo never points at
another organization's installation.

The conflict update unconditionally makes the running job's installation the repository owner. An older overlapping job can therefore overwrite a newer job's correct installation association.
Repository lookups use the old installation's token and can fail with 404; deleting the old installation may also remove a repository now accessible through the new one.
This can occur when: Two installation syncs overlap while a repository moves between connected accounts; the old installation fetched the repository before the move but performs its upsert after the new installation's upsert.

Track completion of the browser flow.
If GitHub redirects after an existing installation is updated, the callback keeps the same database ID. If no new row appears, the CLI waits ten minutes and reports failure. If another member adds an installation while the CLI waits, the CLI can report that unrelated installation as success.
Carry a flow identifier in the browser-bound state, persist a separate completion record for each flow, and poll for that identifier instead of new installation IDs.

The new --account selector chooses the first matching login rather than distinguishing installation IDs. A stale row and a replacement installation for the same GitHub login can therefore cause it to select the stale row.
The command reports that the account was disconnected while its current installation remains connected.
This can occur when: An uninstall webhook was missed, then the same GitHub account was reinstalled with a new installation ID; both rows remain under the Paradev organization.

Repository reassignment leaves older PRs in the former organization
If a transferred repository’s row survives until the new installation syncs, older PRs retain the former organization ID. listOrganizationPullRequests can expose those PRs to the former organization and omit them from the new one. The new installation association also lets those rows survive deletion of the former installation.

Change this migration so the non-unique organization index is built without
holding a table lock for the duration of the build: move its creation to a
migration step that runs outside the transaction and use concurrent index
creation if the migration system supports it. Keep dropping
github_installations_org_unique, and verify the migration runner’s transaction
behavior before choosing the implementation.

Prevent ambiguous legacy disconnects from deleting another account.
If installation A becomes suspended after a legacy client confirms it, this lookup can select and delete active installation B instead. Deleting B also cascades to its repositories and workspace associations. Fail safely when the confirmed installation cannot be identified.

triggerSync also schedules account-owner-suspended installations.
If the suspension remains when the job runs, the job cannot backfill that account, although the mutation can return success. App-placed suspensions still need scheduling so the job can lift them.

Continue after a repository-level collaborator error.
If one user-installation repository returns 403 or 404, catch that error inside the repository loop. The current catch skips all later repositories, so their collaborators are missing from GitHub actor options.

Reset the preview database after renumbering the migration.
The preview database had applied migration 0190. The regenerated migration tries to drop the same constraint again, and the preview database deployment failed because the constraint no longer exists.
If the preview Neon branch has not been reset since that failure, delete it and rerun the preview deployment. The migration checklist requires this reset after changing a pushed migration.

A Team-plan customer cancelled about 1h45m after subscribing: "only 1 github org, too limiting".
The limit was structural, not billing. There is no plan or Autumn limit on the number of orgs;
packages/shared/src/billing.tsonly gates GitHub atpro. What limited us:github_installationshadunique("github_installations_org_unique").on(organizationId)./api/github/callbackupserted withtarget: organizationId, so connecting a second GitHub account overwrote the first.githubInstallations.findFirst({ where: organizationId }).How It Works
0191_github_installations_multiple_per_org.sql):DROP CONSTRAINT github_installations_org_unique, thenCREATE INDEX github_installations_org_id_idx.installation_idstays globally unique, so one GitHub installation still belongs to exactly one Paradev org.saveInstallation):INSERT … ON CONFLICT (installation_id) DO UPDATE … WHERE organization_id = $org.save_failed. The existingalready_connectedpre-check still runs first.github_repositories.organization_id, which already existed (denormalized for Electric).findInstalledRepositoryloads the repo's own installation, so a PR on an org-B repo uses org B's token.triggerSync, and the plan-upgrade backfill run per installation.connectionStatusreports connected if any installation is active.organizationInstallations(orgId)orders active installations first, then oldest first. Not run: a real GitHub install round-trip. This workspace's
GH_APP_PRIVATE_KEYholds only its first line, so the API cannot mint GitHub tokens here, and the headless browser could not reach github.com. Demo installations were seeded on the dev branch instead.Independent review: findings and fixes
A separate review agent read the diff and searched the rest of the repo. It found no cross-org security hole and no drizzle semantics mistake. It confirmed the callback upsert: a race between two orgs ends in
save_failed, and the installation is not taken over.Fixed in
de42b587:disconnectdeleted every account. Old CLIs confirm the accountgetInstallationshows, then senddisconnect({ organizationId })with no id. That call now removes only that account.getInstallationreturned.No installation found, and that row is untouched.organization_idbut kept itsinstallation_id. Initial sync and the dev sync now update both.Open, and not fixed here:
connect: if the user picks an account that is already installed, GitHub sends back the same installation id. The CLI waits for a new one and times out after 10 minutes. The web flow is unaffected.installation_idfrom the URL, so an org member can claim an installation that no Paradev org owns yet.Migration safety (db-migrations checklist)
github_installationsis 1.8 MB with 3,277 rows on the production-copy branch, one per org.DROP CONSTRAINTtakes a brief ACCESS EXCLUSIVE lock on this small table only, and no parent tables are locked. The table is not in the hot list. No load rehearsal was run, per the skill: it touches only a small table that no job holds open.deploy-apianddeploy-webbothneeds: deploy-database, so the code that inserts a second row never runs before the constraint is gone.packages/trpc/AGENTS.mdrule 10. The tRPC changes are additive only, so a revert of the code alone stays safe (see Rollback).tRPC compatibility
getInstallationis kept, and still used by released desktop and CLI builds. They keep working, and see one account.listInstallations: called by web (deploys with the API), desktop settings, and CLI. Desktop and CLI pick it up in their next release, after this API is live.Known Limitations / Follow-ups
installationTokenForinpackages/trpc/src/lib/sandbox/repositories.ts): when the creator has not connected their own GitHub, the box gets one installation token. That token comes from the first repo's account, and private repos from a second account in the same workspace will not clone. The creator's own token (the default) is unaffected. The fix needs per-owner credentials at the egress firewall.getByBranchesacross orgs is covered by the organization-wide repo filter, but not exercised against real GitHub data.apps/docsCLI reference is not updated fordisconnect --account. The docs site documents only released CLI behavior, so update it with the next CLI release.POST /api/github/sync(development only) still syncs one installation.Risks / Rollout / Rollback
organization_id, which has no unique constraint after 0191. That makes the old callback fail, though nothing else breaks.Summary by CodeRabbit
