fix(chat): show Claude Code's interrupt marker as a stopped line, not a user message - #9383
[Request interrupted by user] and [Request interrupted by user for tool use] no longer show as user bubbles in reopened, resumed, or CLI-to-chat forked chats. They render as a quiet stopped line where the stop happened.
deriveTimeline turns a replayed marker into a user_stop timeline entry. Prompt recall (↑), the prompt rail, message edit, and the handoff transcript stop treating it as a prompt. This holds on desktop and mobile, for new replays and for chats already stored in a journal.
Why / Context
When you stop Claude Code, the CLI writes a user message whose whole text is the marker. On session/load and session/resume, claude-agent-acp replays that message as a user_message_chunk. It strips command and system-reminder tags, but not this marker. The ACP adapter then records it as a user message. Live chats never showed it: the adapter drops live user echoes, and a live stop arrives as turn status interrupted.
Which action writes which marker, as seen in the session JSONL:
Stop while the model replies or thinks: [Request interrupted by user].
Esc at the Claude Code CLI permission prompt, or Esc while an approved tool is running: the same refusal tool_result (toolUseResult: "User rejected tool use"), then [Request interrupted by user for tool use]. The marker does not say whether the tool ran. A probe that appended a line each second wrote 19 of 30 lines before the stop.
No on the chat's own approval card: no marker. The turn continues.
How It Works
packages/chat/src/core/userStop: userStopMarker(text) and userStopOf(item, harness) recognise both markers, allowing whitespace around them. Only Claude sessions count (claudeBookkeeping.harnesses: claude-acp, claude-code). A user message is never read as a stop if it has a clientId (typed in this chat), was forwarded by a parent agent (from: "parent"), or has more than one part.
collapseWorkLog / deriveTimeline: adds the TimelineEntry kind { kind: "user_stop", item, stop }, placed where the marker was. DeriveTimelineOptions.harness scopes it, and useTimeline passes SessionState.harness.
Desktop transcriptRows: a user_stop entry becomes an interrupted turn_status row that carries userStop. The interrupted state of TurnStatusRow now renders StoppedDivider: a small stop square, muted text-xs copy, and a hairline. The copy is "You stopped this response", "You stopped this response at a tool call", or "Stopped" when the cause is unknown.
Mobile chatRows: a user_stop entry becomes the existing "Stopped" status line.
chat-runtimetranscriptBefore (fork and rewind) keeps the marker item, so a forked chat keeps its stops.
Manual QA Checklist
Run on this worktree's dev app over CDP with real Claude sessions. Each "before" was captured on the base commit, and each "after" on this branch, on the same session.
Stop during thinking, then reopen the chat (a host restart replays it). Base: a [Request interrupted by user] bubble. Branch: "You stopped this response".
Fork into CLI, press Esc at the permission prompt, then Fork into chat. Base: a [… for tool use] bubble, and the prompt rail counts 6. Branch: the tool-use divider (captured with the earlier wording "…before a tool ran", since changed to "…at a tool call"), and the rail counts the 4 real prompts.
↑ in the empty composer recalls the last real prompt, not the marker.
A live stop renders the divider with "Stopped".
The divider has no edit or resend affordances.
Mobile was not run on a simulator. It is covered by unit tests only.
bun test in apps/desktop: 9300 pass, 49 fail. 38 are git, worktree, shell-env, and native-messaging tests that fail only when run from a worktree path. 11 are Lexical HISTORY_MERGE_TAG init errors that the base commit also shows. None are in touched code.
bun run typecheck: desktop, packages/chat, and packages/chat-runtime are clean. apps/mobile reports 187 errors, all in files this PR does not touch.
bun run check:i18n passes. Both new strings are translated in all 17 locales.
biome check on the changed files is clean.
New tests: the recogniser (including harness, parent and clientId cases), deriveTimeline, the stored-journal-to-rows path in transcriptRows, TurnStatusRow copy, and mobile chatRows.
Design Decisions
Why deriveTimeline, not the ACP adapter. An adapter fix leaves every chat already stored in a journal showing the bubble. Also, liveSession.fail() sets turn status interrupted when the harness dies, so "the user stopped it" has to come from the marker itself, or from a new protocol field. A single client data layer covers desktop, mobile, every consumer of user messages, and both old and new data.
Why a new entry kind, not a rewrite of turns. Replay folds the next prompt into the marker's turn ([marker, P2, reply]). A prompt stopped before any reply keeps the marker in its own turn ([P, marker]). An entry in place keeps both positions right without splitting turns.
Live stops use the same line. Every interrupted turn now renders StoppedDivider. A live stop keeps the word "Stopped", because the cause is not known.
Known Limitations
Mobile shows "Stopped", not the two new sentences.
Not exercised end to end: resume from the history picker, resume after an update, and superset sessions resume. They use the same replay path, per the code.
Summary by cubic
Fixes the chat transcript so Claude Code's interrupt markers render as a quiet stopped line instead of a user message bubble in reopened, resumed, and forked chats.
Previously, Claude Code records a stop as a user message whose text is [Request interrupted by user] (or ... for tool use]), and replaying session history surfaced it as a prompt in the transcript, prompt recall, the prompt rail, and message edit. The timeline now recognizes these markers as a user_stop entry at the position where the stop happened.
Desktop shows "You stopped this response" or "You stopped this response at a tool call"; the stop is also shown live, and mobile keeps the existing "Stopped" line.
Markers are read only in Claude sessions; the same text in a Codex or OpenCode session, or one a parent agent forwarded, stays a prompt.
Live interrupts without a marker still show "Stopped", since the cause isn't known from the protocol alone.
The fix lives in the shared client data layer, so it also corrects chats already stored in a journal.
Markers typed by the user in the chat (carrying a clientId) are never mistaken for stops, and forked chats keep their stops.
Written for commit cc7ae14. Summary will update on new commits.
Summary by CodeRabbit
New Features
Chat transcripts now show when you stopped a response, with a distinct notice when it stopped at a tool call.
Stop notices appear in their original position in conversation history on desktop and mobile.
Stop notices are available in supported languages.
When the user interrupts Claude Code, the CLI writes a user message whose
whole text is "[Request interrupted by user]" (or "... for tool use]").
claude-agent-acp replays it as a user_message_chunk on session/load and
session/resume, so every resumed, imported or CLI-to-chat chat stored it as
a prompt the user typed. Live turns never show it: the ACP adapter drops
live user echoes.
deriveTimeline now turns that message into a `user_stop` entry where it
sits, so the transcript, prompt history, the rail, message edit and the
handoff transcript stop treating it as a prompt. This covers chats already
journaled too. A message sent from the chat carries a clientId and is never
taken for a stop.
The fork path keeps the original item, so a forked chat keeps its stops.
Mobile shows its existing "Stopped" line in the stop's place.
A user_stop entry becomes an interrupted turn_status row in the marker's
place, carrying which stop it was. TurnStatusRow's interrupted state is now
StoppedDivider: a small stop square, muted xs text and a hairline, with no
edit or resend affordances.
- "You stopped this response" for a stop mid-response
- "You stopped this response before a tool ran" when the user declined a
tool, which is when Claude Code writes the tool-use marker
- "Stopped" when the cause is unknown: a live cancel and a harness failure
both leave a turn interrupted, so only the marker can say the user did it
Both new strings are translated in every locale.
The chat timeline now recognizes replayed interruption markers as user-stop entries. Desktop and mobile transcript adapters render them as interrupted status rows. The desktop status display shows a message for the recorded stop reason, with translations added across locales.

Summary
Detect and derive user stops packages/chat/src/core/userStop/*, packages/chat/src/core/timeline/*, packages/chat/src/react/useTimeline/*, packages/chat-runtime/src/commands/commands/*, packages/chat-runtime/src/harness/codex/codexAdapter/codexTimeline.test.ts
The chat core maps two interruption markers to stop types for supported harnesses and emits user_stop timeline entries for matching user messages. Runtime timeline handling now expands tool_run entries into their items and treats other entries as single-item entries.
The desktop and mobile transcript adapters convert user_stop entries into interrupted status rows. Desktop run finalization ends an active run before adding the row.
Render stop reasons and messages apps/desktop/.../TurnGroupSection/*, packages/i18n/locales/*/messages.po
The desktop status row passes the stop reason to StoppedDivider, which selects a message and sets data-turn-stopped. Locale files add translations for both stop messages.
Replayed stops can appear as prompts when a caller supplies a Claude harness but the snapshot has no session metadata. The currently inspected app callers do not use that option, so the remaining risk is bounded.

Assert the stop row's status in the new stop test.
The test checks only kind and key for the stop:s1 row. If status changed from "interrupted" to "failed", this test still passes. The row then renders as an error line reading "The turn failed" instead of "Stopped".

Update the stop-row test around chatRows to assert that the row with key
"stop:s1" has status "interrupted", preserving the existing kind and key
assertions. Use the row produced by chatRows(groups, []) and verify its status
so a change to "failed" causes the test to fail.
Add a test that places tool calls on both sides of a stop.
The new test has no tool calls, so endRun() in the user_stop branch does nothing there. Removing that call would still pass the test. Without it, a tool call after the stop joins the run placed before the stop row. A single tool call before the stop also stays in a tool_run instead of becoming an item row.
Add a case with tool calls before and after a user_stop in one turn. Assert the row order tool_run, turn_status, tool_run. Also assert that a single tool call before the stop becomes an item row. This case covers the run boundary that the existing tests do not check.

Cover the userStop forwarding from TurnGroupSection in a test.
TurnGroupSection.tsx passes userStop={row.userStop} to TurnStatusRow in the turn_status case. The new tests render TurnStatusRow directly. No test in the inspected suite checks the stop reason for a turn_status row through TurnGroupSection. If that prop is dropped, the stop line uses the undefined-reason fallback, which renders data-turn-stopped="unknown", and the suite still passes.
Add a TurnGroupSection test that renders a turn_status row with status="interrupted" and userStop: "tool_use". Use the existing TurnGroupSection.test.tsx render helper. Assert data-turn-stopped="tool_use" on the stop line. Asserting the attribute keeps this check independent of the divider copy.

Review verdict: minor issues. The approach is sound: fixing it in deriveTimeline also covers chats already stored in a journal. Every TimelineEntry consumer handles the new user_stop kind, and the tests and CI pass at 086a46a8.
Findings
Minor, structure: packages/chat/src/core/userStop/userStop.ts:5 / packages/chat/src/core/timeline/deriveTimeline.ts:49: Claude Code's stop markers are matched in every harness's sessions. The existing readBookkeeping readers are scoped per harness (packages/chat/src/core/bookkeeping/types.ts:1-9). A replayed Codex or OpenCode user message that is exactly [Request interrupted by user] would turn into a divider. Fix: limit the check to ["claude-acp", "claude-code"] and pass the harness into deriveTimeline, or move the markers next to claudeBookkeeping.
Checked and fine: there is no double divider, because replayed turns are always completed. Replayed chunks carry a messageId, so the marker never merges into the next prompt.
Evidence: a synthetic render in the desktop dev renderer, using the PR's real deriveTimeline → transcriptRows → TurnStatusRow, shows both dividers in the right place. Prompt history and the rail list only the real prompts. I could not reopen a real session end to end because Claude is not logged in on the review box. I did not run mobile.
The markers are Claude Code's own text, so a message with the same words in
a Codex or OpenCode session, or one a parent agent forwarded to a subagent,
stays a prompt. deriveTimeline takes the session's harness, and useTimeline
passes SessionState.harness, so desktop and mobile get it with no change.
The harness list is claudeBookkeeping's, the one the other Claude readers use.
"Before a tool ran" was wrong. Claude Code writes the same
"[Request interrupted by user for tool use]" marker, after the same refusal
tool_result, when the user presses Esc while an approved command is running.
A probe that appended a line each second wrote 19 of 30 lines before the stop.
The new copy names where the stop happened without saying whether the tool ran.
Translated in every locale.
Thanks for the review. The harness-scoping finding is fixed in 5a351eb. Stop markers now count only in Claude sessions, using claudeBookkeeping.harnesses so there is still one list. deriveTimeline takes the harness through DeriveTimelineOptions.harness, and useTimeline passes SessionState.harness, so desktop and mobile needed no change. The same commit also leaves a message from a parent agent (from: "parent") as a prompt.
One more change from review, in cc7ae14: the tool-use copy is now "You stopped this response at a tool call". Claude Code writes the same marker when you press Esc during an approved, running tool, so "before a tool ran" was wrong in that case. I reproduced that with a real TUI session.

Use the supplied harness when session metadata is absent.
If a caller passes useTimeline(snapshot, { harness: "claude-acp" }) while snapshot.session is null, this line ignores the supplied harness. Replayed stop markers then remain prompt entries. Use options?.harness as the fallback so the hook honors its DeriveTimelineOptions contract. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

deriveTimeline, not the ACP adapter. An adapter fix leaves every chat already stored in a journal showing the bubble. Also,liveSession.fail()sets turn statusinterruptedwhen the harness dies, so "the user stopped it" has to come from the marker itself, or from a new protocol field. A single client data layer covers desktop, mobile, every consumer of user messages, and both old and new data.[marker, P2, reply]). A prompt stopped before any reply keeps the marker in its own turn ([P, marker]). An entry in place keeps both positions right without splitting turns.StoppedDivider. A live stop keeps the word "Stopped", because the cause is not known.Known Limitations
superset sessionsresume. They use the same replay path, per the code.Summary by cubic
Fixes the chat transcript so Claude Code's interrupt markers render as a quiet stopped line instead of a user message bubble in reopened, resumed, and forked chats.
Previously, Claude Code records a stop as a user message whose text is
[Request interrupted by user](or... for tool use]), and replaying session history surfaced it as a prompt in the transcript, prompt recall, the prompt rail, and message edit. The timeline now recognizes these markers as auser_stopentry at the position where the stop happened.clientId) are never mistaken for stops, and forked chats keep their stops.Written for commit cc7ae14.
