What & why

Fixes #9173. Settings → Usage got three things wrong about Codex homes:

  • Any 401 or 403 from the usage endpoint became token_expired. The card then read Sign-in expired and offered codex login. A 403 is a refusal that a new sign-in does not clear. An access token that has only passed its exp is renewed from the refresh token the next time Codex runs. Current Codex releases log out and revoke the stored login before codex login signs in again, so following the card's advice ended a login that still worked.
  • Codex had no token_stale state, which Claude and OpenCode cards already have.
  • A Codex home whose auth.json was gone dropped off the panel. A signed-out Claude profile shows a Signed out card instead.

What changes:

  • 403 (fetchCodexSubscriptionQuota): now unavailable with "Usage endpoint returned 403.". A 401 stays token_expired. The OpenCode reader uses the same function, so its OpenAI login handles a 403 the same way.

  • Lapsed tokens (classifyCodexToken): before any request, the reader decodes the exp claim of the access token (it does not verify it). If exp has passed and a refresh token is stored, the card is token_stale ("Refreshes when Codex next runs."). With no refresh token, it is token_expired. In both cases the endpoint is not called. A token with no readable exp still goes to the endpoint. Sign-in expired now appears only for a lapsed token with no refresh token, or when the endpoint answers 401 for a token that has not lapsed. CODEX_EXPIRED_TOKEN_DETAIL now says to sign in again, because a token that will refresh no longer gets it.

  • Signed-out homes (discoverCodexHomes): a signed-out card offers Remove, which deletes the whole dir, and Switch sign-in, which runs codex login. So a ~/.codex* home is listed with signedOut: true only when Paradev made it and nothing in it can still sign in:

    • It carries Paradev's creation marker, .superset-created naming codex. fix(usage): only sign in to and remove profile dirs Paradev created #9182 adds this marker to the add-account command, which writes it into each dir it creates. This PR carries the same constant and reader (PROFILE_CREATED_MARKER, hasProfileCreatedMarker) so it builds on its own. Until fix(usage): only sign in to and remove profile dirs Paradev created #9182 lands, nothing writes the marker and no Codex home is listed as signed out.
    • It holds the profile ledger (.superset-profile.json), which provisioning writes once a sign-in there has completed. A home whose first sign-in is still running, or was cancelled, stays hidden. The ledger alone does not count: Make default, prepareAccount and host boot write it into any home they provision, including homes the user or another tool made.
    • auth.json is missing (lstat gives ENOENT), or it is a regular file that parses to no credential. The credential fields are tokens (access and refresh token), OPENAI_API_KEY, personal_access_token, agent_identity, bedrock_api_key and bedrock_access_keys, and all must be null or empty. Any other field that is set, except auth_mode and last_refresh, counts as a login.
    • The home's config.toml does not set cli_auth_credentials_store to anything but file. With keyring, or auto where a keyring exists, Codex keeps the login in the OS keyring and deletes auth.json. Provisioning copies config.toml from the default home, so that setting can reach every profile.

    An auth.json that is a symlink, is not a file or does not parse (it can be mid-write) leaves the home hidden. The card has the same detail text as a signed-out Claude profile; the two share one constant. The system-default home is never signed out.

  • Remove (removeAccount): it used to check the selection against the cached quota list, which can be five minutes old. A Codex home is now discovered again before it is deleted. It must still be a secondary home, and if its card said signed out, it must still hold no login. Otherwise nothing is deleted and the error says why.

  • Chat account menu (UsageLimitNotice): "Continue this chat on another login" lists every login of the agent. A signed-out row is now disabled and reads Signed out. Picking one used to make it the default for new agents and restart the chat on a home with no login. This covers signed-out Claude profiles too.

  • Desktop: the stale-card text comes from a small staleTokenDetail helper, which adds the Codex wording. I regenerated the catalogs with bun run check:i18n and translated the new string in all 17 locales, Ukrainian included.

Effects to review:

  • Every caller of discoverCodexHomes now sees a signed-out home. usage.logins gives it a null fingerprint, so a new sign-in there counts as a change. prepareAccount accepts it. Session capture finds no identity in it, with one rare exception: an auth.json whose access and refresh tokens are empty but which still keeps tokens.id_token and account_id gives session capture the account those name. Session capture only records which account a session used and writes nothing, so this PR leaves that path unchanged (see the CodeRabbit note below). Usage history still scans its sessions/.
  • A signed-out Codex card offers Switch sign-in, Remove and Make default, as a signed-out Claude card already does. Make default points new agents at a home with no login until it is signed in again, and the restart prompt can follow.
  • Homes added before fix(usage): only sign in to and remove profile dirs Paradev created #9182 carry no marker, so once signed out they stay hidden, as they do on main.
  • A keyring chosen outside the home's own config.toml, such as a managed config or -c on the command line, is not visible here.
  • This PR and fix(usage): only sign in to and remove profile dirs Paradev created #9182 both add the marker reader to profiles.ts and both touch profile-remove.ts, its test and the removeAccount doc comment. Whichever lands second has to merge imports and comments in those four files.
  • No procedure input or output changes shape. token_stale and signed_out are existing statuses. An older desktop that gets a Codex token_stale card from a newer host shows the Claude Code wording, because that text lives in the renderer.

How I tested it

All runs used Docker with oven/bun:1.4.3 (the .bun-version pin) and bun install --frozen --ignore-scripts, as CI does. I added git, curl, procps and jq to the image. Every test, typecheck and lint run had --network none.

Tests first. On main at 206b6ce, I added every test this PR adds, plus stubs that keep main's behaviour and only add what the tests call: the homeDir parameters, a signedOut: false field, a token classifier that always answers "live", the marker's name, a Remove re-check that does nothing, and the stale-text helper without its Codex branch.

  • 10 of the 29 new host-service tests fail:
    • the stale and expired classifier tests;
    • the 403 test;
    • the two fetchCodexAccounts tests for a stale token and for a signed-out card;
    • the three discoverCodexHomes tests that expect a signed-out home, one of them being the file control in the keyring test;
    • two of the four Remove re-check tests.
  • Both new desktop tests fail: the Codex stale text, and the signed-out row in the chat menu.
  • The other 19 host-service tests pass on main, as they should. They pin behaviour that must not change: a live token, a 401 and a 200, a token with no readable exp, a Remove that may go ahead, and these homes staying hidden:
    • homes that another tool made;
    • homes whose login is stored outside the access token;
    • homes whose auth.json cannot be read as a file;
    • a home whose first sign-in is still running.

On this PR's previous head (9023914), with only the tests for this round:

  • All three host-service test files fail to load (Export named 'PROFILE_CREATED_MARKER' not found, and the same for assertCodexHomeStillRemovable).
  • With stubs for the two new names, 13 host-service tests fail:
    • seven logins stored outside the access token (every kind but an API key);
    • the keyring home;
    • the dangling auth.json symlink;
    • a provisioned home that another tool made, both in discovery and as a card;
    • the two Remove re-check tests.
  • The chat-menu test fails as well.

After the change, on the pushed head:

  • bun run check:i18n passes with 0 missing messages in each of the 17 locales and leaves all 18 committed catalogs, English included, unchanged. After merging main at 0dcd64a, which adds the Ukrainian catalog (feat(i18n): ship Ukrainian #9190), I re-ran it with the five test files this PR touches, in a fresh container whose network was cut once the install finished: 54 host-service and 9 desktop tests pass. The other results below are from the previous head, 7e819a3.
  • Usage tests: 181 pass in host-service src/trpc/router/usage (165 before this round). 23 pass in the agent-setup profile tests. 55 pass in the desktop settings/usage route plus UsageLimitNotice.
  • I ran the full host-service, agent-setup, i18n and desktop suites on the previous head and on this one, in the same container. The same tests fail on both, and none of them are in usage code:
    • 5 in host-service: three terminal router integration tests, a workspace-cleanup permission test, and the session-store test that creates 5,000 directories;
    • 4 in agent-setup;
    • 1 in desktop.
  • bun run typecheck: 42 of 42 tasks pass.
  • Lint: biome check . is clean on the whole repo. It uses biome 2.4.2 from the lockfile and fails on any diagnostic, as scripts/lint.sh does. Biome re-wrapped two statements in profiles.ts and one in profiles.test.ts; those changes are in the commits. Every check above ran on that formatted tree, and the pushed head is byte-for-byte the same tree.

No screenshot: I did not run the desktop app. The visible changes are a Codex card's status and text, and a disabled row in the chat's account menu. The tests above render that menu.

Checklist

  • PR title follows conventional commits (type(scope): subject)
  • bun run lint and bun run typecheck pass (CI fails on lint warnings too)
  • "Allow edits from maintainers" is checked on fork PRs

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Signed-out Codex profiles now appear in usage settings with clearer account status details.
    • Stale Codex access shows that usage refreshes the next time Codex runs, with localized guidance. Expired access prompts you to run codex login.
  • Bug Fixes
    • Signed-out accounts can’t be selected from the account menu.
    • Codex profile removal checks the profile’s current status before proceeding, helping prevent removal if its state has changed.
    • Codex access errors now show an unavailable status when usage can’t be retrieved.

…eir own states

Every 401 and 403 from the usage endpoint became token_expired, so the
card said "Sign-in expired" and offered `codex login`. A 403 is a refusal
that a new sign-in does not clear, and an access token that has only
passed its exp is renewed from the refresh token the next time Codex
runs. Current Codex releases log out and revoke the stored login before
`codex login` signs in again, so following that advice ended a login
that still worked.

- A 403 is now unavailable and names its status code. A 401 stays
  token_expired. The OpenCode reader shares this path.
- Before any request, the exp claim of the access token is read (not
  verified). A lapsed token with a refresh token is token_stale
  ("Refreshes when Codex next runs."); without one it is token_expired.
  Neither calls the endpoint. A token with no readable exp is left to
  the endpoint, as before.
- A ~/.codex* home that holds the profile ledger, which Superset writes
  when it adds a home or makes it the default, stays listed after its
  auth.json is gone or holds no login. It gets a signed_out card with
  the detail text of a signed-out Claude profile, so it can be signed in
  again or removed. Dirs without the ledger stay hidden. An unmarked API
  key, or an auth.json that does not parse (it can be mid-write), does
  not count as signed out, and the system-default home never does.

Walkthrough

Codex usage reporting now retains eligible signed-out homes and distinguishes refreshable expired tokens, expired tokens without refresh credentials, and unavailable quota responses. The desktop usage view displays agent-specific stale-token details, and locale catalogs include the Codex refresh message.

Changes: Codex usage account states

Layer / File(s) Summary
Discover signed-out Codex homes
packages/agent-setup/src/index.ts, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/usage/profiles.ts, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/usage/profiles.test.ts, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/usage/types.ts
Discovery validates profile markers and credential storage. It retains eligible homes without readable login credentials as signed out. Tests cover discovery cases, including credentials stored outside auth.json and filesystem errors.
Classify Codex usage status
packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/usage/codex.ts, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/usage/codex.test.ts, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/usage/claude.ts
Codex usage retrieval distinguishes stale and expired tokens, maps 403 responses to unavailable, and returns signed-out accounts for eligible homes. Tests cover token classification, quota responses, and account retrieval. Claude signed-out account details use the shared profile message.
Recheck Codex homes before removal
packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/usage/profile-remove.ts, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/usage/profile-remove.test.ts, packages/host-service/src/trpc/router/usage/usage.ts
Before removal, the router rediscovers the selected Codex home and checks that it remains a secondary home. It rejects a signed-out account if the home now has credentials. Tests cover these checks.
Display signed-out and stale account details
apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/settings/usage/components/UsageView/UsageView.tsx, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/settings/usage/components/UsageView/utils/staleTokenDetail/*, apps/desktop/src/renderer/routes/_authenticated/_dashboard/v2-workspace/$workspaceId/hooks/usePaneRegistry/components/ChatSession/components/SessionView/components/UsageLimitNotice/*, packages/i18n/locales/*/messages.po
The usage view selects stale-token detail by agent. The account menu disables signed-out accounts and displays their status. Locale catalogs add the Codex refresh message.

Explanation

The changes relate to [#9173]. The 403 and lapsed-token classification, the Codex stale text, and the signed-out discovery rules serve the usage-card behavior the issue requests. The UsageLimitNotice guard disables signed-out rows. This prevents a switch to a home with no login, and it covers the signed-out cards this PR adds. The removeAccount re-check (assertCodexHomeStillRemovable) protects the Remove action for signed-out cards from stale quota data. The shared SIGNED_OUT_PROFILE_DETAIL constant and the Ukrainian and other catalog strings support the new card text. The PROFILE_CREATED_MARKER reader supports the signed-out eligibility rule. It is connected even though its writer is absent. No unrelated product change is shown.

Explanation

The pull request description follows the required template. It explains the changes and motivation, references issue #9173, documents extensive testing and known unrelated failures, addresses the lack of a screenshot, and completes the checklist.

Full details: Linked Issues check

Explanation

[#9173] Parts 1 and 2 are implemented at head 106be50. fetchCodexSubscriptionQuota returns unavailable for 403 and keeps 401 as token_expired. classifyCodexToken decodes exp without verifying it. A lapsed token with a refresh token becomes token_stale, and a lapsed token without one becomes token_expired. Both skip the request. The Codex stale text is added in staleTokenDetail. Part 3 is not implemented. discoverCodexHomes (profiles.ts, isSignedOutCodexHome) lists a home as signed out only when it has the .superset-created marker and the profile ledger. This PR adds only the marker constant and reader. It adds no writer. The PR description says nothing writes the marker until #9182 lands, and that homes added before then stay hidden. The issue asks that a Codex home Paradev added or set up, with a lost login, show a Signed out card. Under this PR, homes Paradev added on main stay hidden. A related pull request does not establish code in this pull request.

Resolution

Make Paradev's Codex provisioning or add-account path write the creation marker in this pull request, or make the eligibility gate use the profile ledger as the issue proposes, with safeguards against homes the user or another tool made. Then add a test that provisions a Codex home, removes its login, and expects discoverCodexHomes and fetchCodexAccounts to return a signed_out card.

[Medium impact] The PR appears safe to merge; no actionable issues were found.

Summary

This PR separates Codex usage failures into clearer states:

  • A Codex 403 appears as unavailable instead of an expired sign-in.
  • Codex cards distinguish renewable tokens from expired sign-ins.
  • Codex homes Paradev set up stay listed after sign-out.

No actionable issues found.

Acknowledgments from tsavo-at-pieces: listing signed-out homes in the account switcher is intentional; restricting Remove to homes Paradev created is deferred to #9170; older desktops showing Claude Code wording for Codex token_stale cards is a known compatibility limit.

The signed-out listing keyed on the profile ledger, but provisioning
writes that ledger into any home it touches: Make default,
prepareAccount and host boot reach homes that the user or another tool
created. Such a home whose login was logged out, or only moved aside for
a moment, got a "Signed out" card. That card offers Remove, which
deletes the whole dir, and Switch sign-in, which runs `codex login`, and
`codex login` revokes the login it finds before it signs in. The test for
"no login" also missed most of what Codex stores in auth.json, and logins
kept in the OS keyring, for which Codex deletes auth.json.

A ~/.codex* home is now listed as signed out only when all of these hold:

- It carries Paradev's creation marker, .superset-created naming codex.
  The marker reader is shared with the API-billing marker, as in ParadevAI#9182,
  which adds the marker to the add-account command.
- It holds the profile ledger, which provisioning writes once a sign-in
  there has completed. A home whose first sign-in is still running, or
  was cancelled, stays hidden.
- auth.json is missing (lstat gives ENOENT), or it is a regular file that
  parses to no credential. The credential fields are tokens (access and
  refresh token), OPENAI_API_KEY, personal_access_token,
  agent_identity, bedrock_api_key and bedrock_access_keys, and all must
  be null or empty. Any other field that is set, except auth_mode and
  last_refresh, counts as a login.
- The home's config.toml does not set cli_auth_credentials_store to
  anything but "file".

An auth.json that is a symlink, is not a file or does not parse still
leaves the home hidden.

removeAccount checked the selection against the cached quota list, which
can be five minutes old, and then deleted the dir. A login that came back
after the list was read was deleted with it. A Codex home is now
discovered again first. It must still be a secondary home, and if its
card said signed out, it must still hold no login. Otherwise nothing is
deleted and the error says why.

"Continue this chat on another login" listed every login of the agent
and did not say which ones were signed out. Picking a signed-out one made
it the default for new agents and restarted the chat on a home with no
login, so the chat could not continue. Signed-out rows are now disabled
and read "Signed out". This covers signed-out Claude profiles too.

Brings in main up to 0dcd64a (ParadevAI#9190), which adds the Ukrainian
catalog. The next commit adds this branch's new string to it.

ParadevAI#9190 added the Ukrainian catalog after this branch added "Refreshes
when Codex next runs." to the other catalogs, so `lingui compile
--strict` failed for uk. The wording matches the catalog's entries for
Claude Code and OpenCode.

Merged main (0dcd64a) into this branch. #9190 added a Ukrainian catalog after this PR added "Refreshes when Codex next runs." to the other catalogs, so lingui compile --strict failed for uk. 106be50 adds the Ukrainian text, "Оновиться під час наступного запуску Codex.", worded like that catalog's Claude Code and OpenCode entries.

On the new head, bun run check:i18n passes with 0 missing messages in each of the 17 locales and leaves all 18 committed catalogs unchanged. The five test files this PR touches pass: 54 host-service and 9 desktop tests. I corrected the locale counts in the description.

Minor · Data Integrity & Integration · Quick win

Skip signed-out Codex homes during session capture.

When a created Codex home has identity metadata but no access or refresh token, discovery marks it signedOut: true. captureSessionAccount still records it as a subscription account. The terminal store and sessionAccount endpoint then expose a profile account that quota discovery reports as signed out.

Skip candidates whose signedOut flag is true before calling readAccountIdentity.

On CodeRabbit's note about captureSessionAccount (outside this diff): it is right in one narrow shape. A signed-out auth.json whose access and refresh tokens are empty but which still keeps tokens.id_token and account_id still gives session capture the account those name, and this PR makes such homes visible to every caller of discoverCodexHomes.

  • What it affects: session capture only records which account a session used; it writes nothing and reads no usable credential. With both tokens empty, the leftover id token names the account that last signed in to that home.
  • Why not changed here: the code is in session-account/session-account.ts (around lines 80-130), which this PR does not touch, and the suggested patch would not compile as written (the candidates built there do not carry signedOut; a fix has to pass that field through and add a test).
  • I corrected the description's "Session capture finds no identity in it" line to say this. If you would rather have the skip in this PR, I can add it with a test.
