Summary

A failing NCCL launcher crash-looped for about 7 minutes before NVCRE reported WorkloadFailed, and every target node held its GPUs the whole time. The cause was restartPolicy: OnFailure with the default backoffLimit of 6. This PR follows the direction @kaynetu agreed in #498: no ADR, and the reasoning is below.

Launcher (nccl-all-reduce, nccl-all-gather, nccl-alltoall, and BuildMPIRuntime for MPI WorkloadRuns):

  • restartPolicy: Never, with a comment next to it saying why the launcher fails fast. Once the workers are up, a launcher that exits non-zero fails the same way on every retry. retryFailedGroups is still the tier that re-creates the whole Job when a retry is wanted.
  • backoffLimit: 1 outside KAI and 0 under KAI (see the next section).
  • A podFailurePolicy rule that Ignores DisruptionTarget, so an evicted or preempted launcher is replaced without counting as a failure. podFailurePolicy requires Never. The rule spells out status: "True" because Trainer's TrainingRuntime schema requires it. Without it, the runtime is rejected at admission (the integration lane caught this).

Single-pod entries (nccl-loopback, nccl-loopback-nvswitch): restartPolicy: Never, backoffLimit: 0 (the same as dcgm-level4), and the same podFailurePolicy. Their one pod is the test and has no peer to wait for.

Workers stay on OnFailure. They only run sshd -De, and the JobSet tears them down once the launcher Job fails.

backoffLimit: 1 outside KAI, 0 under KAI, not the wait script on every path

@kaynetu pointed out that outside KAI the launcher doesn't wait for the workers. dependsOn: node Ready runs each worker's own loopback SSH probe. That proves sshd serves sessions, but not that the launcher can reach the worker (DNS for the worker's hostname, or network policy on port 22). launcherWaitScript runs only under KAI.

I went with backoffLimit: 1 outside KAI:

  • It covers the case with the least change. With Never, a retry is a new pod created after the Job controller's pod-failure backoff (about 10s; about 9s on Mokka), instead of the kubelet's crash-loop backoff. That is enough for a launcher that started a moment before it could reach a worker. The JobSet already sets publishNotReadyAddresses: true, so the worker DNS records exist early and the window is small. A persistent problem, such as a network policy that blocks port 22, fails the second attempt too, which is the right result.
  • ADR-093's trade-off stays as written. ADR-093 rejected running the wait script on every path because it duplicates the worker-side probe and adds an init container to every MPI launcher. That reasoning didn't depend on the in-place retries, and one cheap pod-level retry replaces what they were incidentally covering, so this PR doesn't need to reopen that decision.
  • The cost: the retry runs after any launcher failure, not only the reachability race, so outside KAI a deterministic failure runs twice before it is reported: about 10s of Job backoff plus a second mpirun run, instead of about 7 minutes. When the failure comes late in the message-size sweep, that second run is a full one.
  • Under KAI: backoffLimit: 0. launcherWaitScript already waits for every worker's sshd before mpirun starts, so the race the retry covers can't happen there, and a retry would only add a second 20-minute wait while the gang holds its GPUs. BuildMPIRuntime sets 0 under KAI, and ApplyGangSchedulerToDependencies lowers the catalog's 1 to 0 when it moves the wait into the launcher (a value an override set is kept).

Longer term, running the reachability wait on every path with backoffLimit: 0 everywhere would close the gap directly; that's a follow-up issue.

The crash-loop handling in bandwidthmeasurement_controller.go (the CrashLoopBackOff skip near :285 and the "restarts > 0, don't advance the anchor" branch near :337) goes idle for the shipped NCCL launchers. With Never the container never restarts in place, so RestartCount stays 0 and the container never sits in Waiting. A failed attempt is a new pod, and GetReplicatedJobPod already ranks a Running or Succeeded pod ahead of a Failed one. While the replacement is Pending the controller sees the failed pod as not running and requeues, then reads the replacement from its own start time. I left the code in place, with a comment, because a user-supplied or patched runtime can still use OnFailure.

failureLog: launcher output, not a worker's sshd exit

@kaynetu noted that captureFailureLog takes the first non-zero exit in any pod, in list order, and skips init containers. Two changes, both in the new failedContainerOf:

  • It picks the earliest non-zero termination by FinishedAt, with OOMKilled still first. The launcher stops before the JobSet tears the workers down, so a worker's sshd exit on the way down can no longer win just because its pod is listed first. With backoffLimit: 1 and two failed launcher pods, the first attempt is reported, and its log is the same.
  • Init containers count too. Under KAI the wait script runs in the launcher's init container, and with Never its 20-minute timeout ends the pod there. Its message names the worker that never answered, so that's the log to keep.

TestFailedContainerOf covers both. TestNCCLAllReduceWorkloadFailed asserts that status.failureLog.podName is the launcher pod and that the tail contains the stub's [stub] simulated failure line.

The launcher also has to be found, and read before it is gone. Mokka showed that the two changes above were not enough: the assertion failed with NoTerminatedContainer. captureFailureLog listed pods by the nvcre.nvidia.com/job label, which only the worker pods carry, and it ran only when the TrainJob turned Failed, about 0.5s after the JobSet had already deleted the failed launcher Job and its pods. ff2d0e4 fixes both:

  • captureFailureLog also lists the workload's launcher pods by their JobSet labels (jobset-name is the workload, replicatedjob-name is launcher).
  • The Job controller watches pods and enqueues the owning Job (through the TrainJob's nvcre.nvidia.com/job label) when a launcher pod is first seen with a container that exited non-zero. While the workload still reports running, launcherFailureLog reads that pod's log into status.failureLog, in the same status write as the InProgress condition, and setJobFailed keeps it.
  • If the run then succeeds after the launcher retry, or restarts from a checkpoint, the record is dropped, so a Succeeded Job never carries a failure that didn't decide the run.
  • Only the current workload's launcher pods count (cf159bf). A checkpoint restart recreates the workload under the same name before the old pods are garbage-collected, so launcherPods drops pods created before the current workload.

I didn't add nvcre.nvidia.com/job to the launcher pod template. That label also drives node discovery, the pod-drain barrier and failed-node attribution, and the comment above CacheOptions relies on launchers not carrying it. captureTimeoutLog in the Workflow controller has the same blind spot on the timeout path. It is outside #498, so it gets a separate issue.

Golden churn

  • Integration (cmd/integration/testdata/reconcile, 40 files): every NCCL Certification and MPI WorkloadRun case that renders a TrainingRuntime. Each one changes only the launcher Job spec (backoffLimit, podFailurePolicy, restartPolicy: Never). certification-gangscheduler-nccl (KAI) has backoffLimit: 0. In the 5 loopback cases, the node Job gets backoffLimit: 0 and the same policy.
  • UAT (test/uat/testdata/*/expected_pods.yaml, 9 files): one line each. The launcher pod's restartPolicy (or the loopback node pod's, in aws/h100/cordoned-node) goes from OnFailure to Never.
  • Mokka: workloadFailureTimeout drops from 15 minutes to the 5-minute certTimeout, since a failing run is now no slower than a passing one.

Also changed

  • retryFailedGroups (api/v1alpha1/workflow_types.go) no longer says it acts after the workload controller "exhausts its own restarts". The CRDs are regenerated.
  • The "Worker start-up under KAI" section of docs/how-to-guides/run-workloadrun.md now says the launcher Job fails after one 20-minute wait under KAI (backoffLimit: 0) instead of up to six in-place restarts. Outside KAI, it notes that status.failureLog carries the first attempt's log.
  • The failureLog row in docs/api-reference/job.md says how the launcher's record is taken and when it is dropped.

…VIDIA#498)

The NCCL launcher and the single-pod NCCL loopback entries used
restartPolicy OnFailure with the default backoffLimit of 6, so a launcher
that failed deterministically crash-looped for about seven minutes before
NVCRE saw WorkloadFailed, with every target node holding its GPUs.

- Launcher (nccl-all-reduce, nccl-all-gather, nccl-alltoall and
BuildMPIRuntime): restartPolicy Never, backoffLimit 1, and a
podFailurePolicy that ignores DisruptionTarget so an evicted or
preempted launcher is replaced. Outside KAI the dependsOn gate proves
only each worker's own loopback sshd session, so one replacement pod
covers a launcher that starts before it can reach a worker.
- nccl-loopback and nccl-loopback-nvswitch: restartPolicy Never,
  backoffLimit 0, same podFailurePolicy.
- MPI workers keep OnFailure.
- captureFailureLog picks the earliest non-zero termination (OOMKilled
still first) and includes init containers, so the launcher's own
output is reported instead of a worker's sshd exit during teardown.
- Mokka UAT asserts failureLog names the launcher and carries its
output, and the failure budget drops to the passing-run budget.
- Reword retryFailedGroups, the WorkloadRun KAI start-up docs and the
bandwidth controller's crash-loop comment to match.

📝 Walkthrough

MPI and NCCL launcher jobs now use explicit restart policies and retry limits. Disruption-target pod failures do not consume those limits. The controller captures launcher failure logs while workloads run and clears them after success or checkpoint restart. Tests and documentation cover retry settings, failure-log capture, and failure status.

Explanation

Issue #498 requires prompt launcher failure, release of worker resources, and no more than one retry for a possible startup race. The PR sets launcher pods to restartPolicy: Never, uses backoffLimit: 1 outside KAI and 0 under KAI, and sets loopback limits to 0. It ignores DisruptionTarget=True failures without consuming the retry budget. The controller captures the launcher log before cleanup and clears it after a successful retry or checkpoint restart. The reported tests and Mokka result support the NCCL and MPI behavior.

Thanks, this is the right direction. Failing fast on the launcher and leaving reruns to retryFailedGroups is the layering I wanted. I checked the 40 NCCL/MPI runtimes rendered in the integration goldens. Every launcher and loopback pod gets the new settings, including the AWS, GCP TCPXO and on-prem patched variants, and every worker stays OnFailure. make test-integration passes locally.

Before merge:

  1. Drop the go.sum change (inline).
  2. Use backoffLimit: 0 under KAI (inline).
  3. Please run the Mokka check yourself. Mokka needs only Docker and Kind, no GPUs:
    make mokka-up PROFILE=h100
    make test-uat-mokka-run
Then paste the TestNCCLAllReduceWorkloadFailed result here, along with the failed Job's status.failureLog (podName, containerName, and the tail). I'd like to see that it names the launcher pod while the workers are being torn down. If something blocks you from running it locally, say what it is and we'll work it out.

Not blocking, but worth an issue: workers keep OnFailure with the default backoffLimit of 6. A worker whose sshd crash-loops before the launcher starts can still hold the nodes for about 7 minutes. #498 was about the launcher, so this doesn't belong in this PR.

Address kaynetu's review on NVIDIA#529.

- Under KAI, launcherWaitScript already waits for every worker's sshd
before mpirun starts, so the early-start race the outside-KAI
replacement pod covers cannot happen, and a retry only adds a second
20-minute wait while the gang holds its GPUs. BuildMPIRuntime now sets
the launcher Job's backoffLimit to 0 under KAI, and
ApplyGangSchedulerToDependencies lowers the catalog's backoffLimit of 1
to 0 when it moves the wait into the launcher. A backoffLimit an
override set to another value is kept.
- TestBuildMPIRuntime_LauncherFailsFast expects 1 outside KAI and 0
under KAI; a new apply-gang-scheduler-deps case pins the catalog patch
and the kept override. The certification-gangscheduler-nccl golden
  moves to backoffLimit 0.
- The WorkloadRun KAI start-up docs describe the launcher Job failing
  without a second wait.
- Drop the go.sum change: the added /go.mod h1: lines are removed by
go mod tidy and go.mod does not change.

The Mokka run of TestNCCLAllReduceWorkloadFailed showed status.failureLog
naming no pod (NoTerminatedContainer). captureFailureLog selected pods by
the nvcre.nvidia.com/job label, which only the worker replicatedJob
carries, and it ran when the TrainJob turned Failed. By then JobSet had
deleted the failed launcher Job and its pods, about half a second after
the launcher failed.

- captureFailureLog also lists the workload's launcher pods, found by
their JobSet labels (jobset-name is the workload, replicatedjob-name
  is "launcher").
- The Job controller watches pods and wakes the owning Job when a
launcher pod is first seen with a container that exited non-zero. The
pod is mapped to the Job through its TrainJob's nvcre.nvidia.com/job
label. While the workload still reports running, launcherFailureLog
reads that launcher's log and stores it in status.failureLog in the
same write as the InProgress condition. setJobFailed keeps it.
- A record taken this way is dropped if the run then succeeds after a
launcher retry, or restarts from a checkpoint, so it never describes a
failure that did not decide the run.
- Tests: new failure-log-capture and launcher-failure-log cases (log
served by an httptest Clientset), plus pins for the pod predicate, the
pod-to-Job mapping and the clear on success. The Job API reference and
the WorkloadRun guide describe the launcher record.

Thanks @kaynetu. There are two new commits on top of 717f6c2:

  • 84a201c drops the go.sum change and sets backoffLimit: 0 under KAI (details inline).
  • ff2d0e4 makes status.failureLog name the launcher. Running Mokka locally showed it didn't.

On 84a201c alone, TestNCCLAllReduceWorkloadFailed failed on the new failureLog assertion with NoTerminatedContainer and no pod name. There were two causes. captureFailureLog lists pods by the nvcre.nvidia.com/job label, which only the worker pod template carries, so the launcher was never a candidate. It also runs only when the TrainJob turns Failed, and by then the JobSet has deleted the failed launcher Job and its pods, about 0.5s after the launcher failed.

What ff2d0e4 does:

  • captureFailureLog also lists the workload's launcher pods by their JobSet labels (jobset-name is the workload, replicatedjob-name is launcher).
  • The Job controller watches pods. When a launcher pod is first seen with a container that exited non-zero, it enqueues the owning Job (through the TrainJob's nvcre.nvidia.com/job label). While the workload still reports running, launcherFailureLog reads that pod's log and stores it in status.failureLog, in the same status write as the InProgress condition. setJobFailed keeps it.
  • If the run then succeeds after the launcher retry, or restarts from a checkpoint, the record is dropped, so a Succeeded Job never carries a failure that didn't decide the run.

I didn't add nvcre.nvidia.com/job to the launcher pod template. That label also drives node discovery, the pod-drain barrier and failed-node attribution, and the comment above CacheOptions relies on launchers not carrying it.

Mokka (h100) on ff2d0e4 (make mokka-up PROFILE=h100, then make test-uat-mokka-run):

--- PASS: TestClusterInfo (0.07s)
--- SKIP: TestComputeDomainPass (0.00s)
--- SKIP: TestComputeDomainDeleteMidRun (0.00s)
--- PASS: TestNCCLAllReducePass (85.26s)
--- PASS: TestNCCLAllReduceWorkloadFailed (112.36s)
--- PASS: TestNCCLAllReduceThreshold (93.33s)
--- PASS: TestNCCLAllReduceNoData (79.28s)
PASS
ok github.com/NVIDIA/cluster-readiness-engine/test/uat/mokka	370.374s

The two ComputeDomain cases only apply to gb200 and gb300. I polled the pods every 0.5s during TestNCCLAllReduceWorkloadFailed:

  • The first launcher pod exited 1 about 8s after it started. NVCRE logged Captured failure log for it within about a second (exit code 1, 14,605 bytes).
  • The replacement launcher came up about 10s later and exited 1 too. Both launcher pods were gone about 0.5s after that, and the Job was Failed with WorkloadFailed at the same moment, about 28s after the first launcher started.
  • status.failureLog names the first launcher pod and carries the stub's [stub] simulated failure line, which is what the test asserts.

Unit and integration tests pass, and golangci-lint and make verify are clean. New tests: failure-log-capture/launcher-failed-without-job-label, five launcher-failure-log cases (the log is served by an httptest-backed Clientset), and pins for the pod predicate, the pod-to-Job mapping and the clear on success.

One thing I left out: captureTimeoutLog in the Workflow controller has the same blind spot on the timeout path. It lists pods by nvcre.nvidia.com/job and then looks for the launcher among them, so it can only find a worker. That isn't part of #498, so I'll open a separate issue for it.

launcherPods matched launcher pods by JobSet name and replicatedJob name
only. restartFromCheckpoint deletes the workload and creates its
replacement under the same name after the restart grace period, without
waiting for the old pods to be garbage-collected. A launcher that failed
before the restart could therefore still be listed and recorded as the
replacement's failureLog, and in setJobFailed it would win the
earliest-failure pick over the current launcher. Reported by CodeRabbit
on NVIDIA#529.

launcherPods now keeps only pods created no earlier than the current
workload, read from the cache. Every pod of the current workload is
created after it, and the old pods before the old workload was deleted,
at least the grace period earlier. The pods carry no reference to the
TrainJob, and the JobSet UID they carry cannot be checked without read
access to JobSets, which the controller does not have. If the workload
is already gone there is nothing to compare against, and the pods are
kept as before. Both the early read and the capture in setJobFailed go
through launcherPods.

Tests: previous-generation cases for both paths (each fails without
the filter) and a workload-gone case.

Thanks for working through all three. The go.sum change is gone, KAI gets backoffLimit: 0 in both places with tests, and the Mokka run found a real gap that the new capture closes. #545 and #546 cover the follow-ups. Three things need to change before merge.

1. The launcher Pod watch conflicts with my #539.

This PR adds Watches(&corev1.Pod{}) and lists launcher pods from the cache by JobSet labels in launcherPods. #539 caches only pods that carry nvcre.nvidia.com/job, which launchers don't, and its guard refuses Pod informers and any cached Pod List that doesn't require that label. So whichever PR merges second breaks:

  • If #539 lands second, the manager fails to start, because the Pod watch's informer is refused.
  • If this PR lands second, the watch and launcherPods are both refused, so the early capture never runs.

Either order works. If this one goes first, #539 takes on the adaptation: it moves launcherPods to pkg/podread and gives the launcher trigger its own source. If #539 goes first, this PR does the same on top of it. Either way, the trigger needs a source that doesn't depend on the main Pod cache. A separate informer selected on jobset.sigs.k8s.io/replicatedjob-name=launcher is one option. Just let me know which order suits you, and I'll help with whichever side ends up adapting.

2. Please rebase onto current main.

The branch is based on 818099ed, before #528 and #535. I merged current main into it locally, and two things fail:

  • make lint: nccl_restart_policy_test.go adds a third "nvidia.com/gpu.product" literal to pkg/catalog, after #535's image_pull_secrets_test.go, so goconst fails. On this branch alone there are only two, so CI here passes, but main would break. gpu.ProductLabel fixes it.
  • reconcile/certification-aws-gb200-nccl-pull-secrets: this golden came from #535. The only diff is the launcher's backoffLimit: 1, podFailurePolicy and restartPolicy: Never, so it just needs regenerating.

Everything else passes on the merged tree: build, codegen, go mod tidy, unit tests in pkg/controller, pkg/platform, pkg/catalog and test/helm, and every other integration case.

3. A same-second tie in failedContainerOf still picks a worker.

FinishedAt has one-second precision. The launcher fails, and JobSet kills the workers' sshd about half a second later, so the two usually record the same second. On a tie, the first pod in the slice wins, and captureFailureLog builds append(podList.Items, launchers...) with the workers first. I checked it with a two-pod case where both containers finish in the same second: workers first picks x-node-0-0, and launchers first picks x-launcher-0-0.

This only affects the fallback in setJobFailed, when the early capture missed. That's most likely under KAI, where backoffLimit: 0 leaves the shortest window. Listing the launchers first (append(launchers, podList.Items...)) fixes it, and a failure-log-capture case with equal FinishedAt would pin it.

Optional, not blocking:

  • Loopback failure logs. The early capture only covers the MPI launcher. The loopback node pod now uses Never with backoffLimit: 0, so by the half-second deletion you measured on Mokka, a failed loopback probably still records PodNotFound. That's no worse than main, but the catalog comment "Never keeps the failed pod and its log for status.failureLog" overstates it. Either soften the comment or extend the capture to the single-pod entries.
  • A first-attempt log can outlive the retry. It's cleared only on success or a checkpoint restart. If the retry fails for another reason, such as WorkloadStalled or the workload being deleted externally, failureLog still shows the first attempt's error.
  • docs/api-reference/job.md. The failureLog row still starts "from the most recent failure", then says the first failed attempt is recorded.
  • Workers. A reminder from my earlier review: an issue for workers keeping OnFailure with the default backoffLimit of 6 hasn't been filed yet.

Signed-off-by: Anpoo Sivanadi <sivanadi08@gmail.com>
FinishedAt has one-second precision, and the workers' sshd usually exits
in the same second as the launcher, so failedContainerOf, which keeps the
first container on a tie, named a worker when captureFailureLog listed the
workers first. List the launchers first. New case
failure-log-capture/launcher-same-second-as-worker fails without it.

After merging main, pkg/catalog has a third "nvidia.com/gpu.product"
literal and goconst fails; use gpu.ProductLabel. Regenerate the
certification-aws-gb200-nccl-pull-secrets golden from NVIDIA#535: the only diff
is the launcher's backoffLimit, podFailurePolicy and restartPolicy Never.

Thanks for the careful review, and for merging main locally to catch the lint and the golden before they reached main.

On the order: could #529 go first? I'd like to take you up on your offer to adapt in #539, moving launcherPods to pkg/podread and giving the launcher trigger its own source. Happy to help on that side, for example by reviewing or testing the separate informer on jobset.sigs.k8s.io/replicatedjob-name=launcher, including a rerun on Mokka.

The other two are fixed in 9209572:

  • The branch now has current main merged in (e4010fa). nccl_restart_policy_test.go uses gpu.ProductLabel, and make lint is clean on the merged tree. I regenerated reconcile/certification-aws-gb200-nccl-pull-secrets, and its only diff is the launcher's backoffLimit: 1, podFailurePolicy and restartPolicy: Never.
  • The tie: captureFailureLog now lists the launchers first (append(launchers, podList.Items...)). The new case failure-log-capture/launcher-same-second-as-worker gives the launcher and a worker the same FinishedAt, and it picks the worker without the fix and the launcher with it.

Build, codegen, go mod tidy, lint, the unit tests in pkg/controller, pkg/platform, pkg/catalog and test/helm, and the full integration suite pass.

Thanks also for the optional notes. If you'd like, I'll look at the loopback comment, the first-attempt log outliving a retry that fails for another reason, and the failureLog wording in docs/api-reference/job.md in a follow-up commit or issue.

The shape of this is right, and the reasoning in the description for backoffLimit: 1 outside KAI and 0 under it convinced me. failedContainerOf picking the earliest non-zero termination with init containers included is the correct fix for the worker-sshd-wins problem, and TestFailedContainerOf plus the launcher-failure-log cases pin it well. The golden churn is exactly what the catalog change implies.

My one concern is that the two behaviours this PR added on top of that are not pinned by anything that runs on a PR.

  1. The launcherFailureLog call in updateStatusFromWorkload is the piece that makes the whole thing work on a real cluster, and nothing holds it in place. I deleted the call at pkg/controller/job_controller.go:895 and the mutator closure that writes j.Status.FailureLog, and go build, go vet and go test ./pkg/controller/ ./pkg/platform/ ./pkg/catalog/ all come back the same as the unmutated tree. TestLauncherFailureLog calls the function directly, so it survives the call site going away, and the reconciler fixture in job_workload_lookup_test.go leaves Clientset nil, which is the first thing the guard at :1712 checks. cmd/integration never sets Clientset and no golden there mentions failureLog. The only end-to-end assertion is test/uat/mokka/nccl_test.go:60-63, and uat-mokka in .github/workflows/e2e-uat.yml runs on schedule and workflow_dispatch only. A later refactor that moves or guards that call puts status.failureLog back to the NoTerminatedContainer outcome you measured on Mokka, and everything on a PR stays green. A job-workload-lookup-style case driving updateStatusFromWorkload with the httptest-backed Clientset you already built and a failed launcher pod present would close it.

  2. Same story for clearFailureLog on the restart path, plus a comment that overstates what is covered. I removed the clearFailureLog argument at pkg/controller/job_controller.go:1470 and the test set is identical: TestJobRestartDoesNotReAnnounceInProgress is the only test that calls restartFromCheckpoint, and newJobVerdictFixture builds a Job with no Status, so Status.FailureLog is nil and clearFailureLog returns false either way. Meanwhile TestSucceededJobDropsLauncherFailureLog's doc comment says "restartFromCheckpoint drops it with the same clearFailureLog" while its body only calls setJobSucceeded. Setting job.Status.FailureLog in the verdict fixture before restartFromCheckpoint and asserting it is nil after would make both the behaviour and the comment true.

Neither of these changes what the PR does, so it is your call whether they ride along here or follow.

…clear

Two behaviours from NVIDIA#498 were held by nothing that runs on a PR:

- updateStatusFromWorkload writing launcherFailureLog into
status.failureLog while the workload still reports running. A new
  job-workload-lookup case, running-records-launcher-failure, drives
updateStatusFromWorkload with an httptest-backed Clientset and a failed
launcher pod, and the golden now records the persisted failureLog
(omitted when unset, so the other goldens are unchanged). The log
server is shared with newFailureLogReconciler as newPodLogClientset.
- restartFromCheckpoint dropping the record through clearFailureLog.
  TestJobRestartDoesNotReAnnounceInProgress now persists a failureLog
before the restart and asserts it is nil afterwards, in memory and on
the stored Job, so the TestSucceededJobDropsLauncherFailureLog comment
that points at it is true.

Also skip launcher pods carrying DisruptionTarget=True (CodeRabbit). The
launcher Job's podFailurePolicy ignores that failure and replaces the
pod, but launcherFailureLog recorded it, and since neither the running
branch nor setJobFailed overwrites a record, a later failure of the
replacement was reported as the evicted pod. launcherPods leaves such
pods out and launcherFailedPredicate does not wake the Job for them.
New cases: launcher-failure-log/disruption-target-ignored and
replacement-over-disruption-target, failure-log-capture/
disruption-target-launcher-ignored, and an evicted launcher in
TestLauncherFailedPredicate. The failureLog row in
docs/api-reference/job.md says so.

Thanks @ndipebot, both are fair, and I'd rather they ride along here than follow. Added in 9254c3b:

  1. job-workload-lookup/running-records-launcher-failure drives updateStatusFromWorkload with the httptest-backed Clientset and a failed launcher pod, and the golden now records the persisted status.failureLog (omitted when unset, so the other goldens don't move). Deleting the launcherFailureLog call at job_controller.go:895 and its mutator fails that case with no failureLog in the output.
  2. TestJobRestartDoesNotReAnnounceInProgress now persists a failureLog before restartFromCheckpoint and asserts it is nil afterwards, in memory and on the stored Job. Dropping clearFailureLog at :1470 fails it, and the TestSucceededJobDropsLauncherFailureLog comment now points at that test, so it's true.

The same commit also skips launcher pods with DisruptionTarget=True, from CodeRabbit's comment. make lint, make verify and the full test suite, integration included, pass locally.

Both are pinned now, and I checked each by mutation: deleting the call at job_controller.go:895 with its mutator fails job-workload-lookup/running-records-launcher-failure, and dropping clearFailureLog at :1470 fails TestJobRestartDoesNotReAnnounceInProgress. Omitting failureLog when unset keeps the other goldens still, which is the right way to add it.

The DisruptionTarget filter you picked up from the other review is a good catch and it reads correct to me. isDisruptionTarget tests c.Status == corev1.ConditionTrue rather than just the condition type, so a present-but-False condition does not filter a pod out, and replacement-over-disruption-target covers the case I would have worried about, where a real failure follows an eviction.

Two nits.

  1. Nothing pins the c.Status == corev1.ConditionTrue half. Weakening it to a type-presence check leaves the suite green, and that is the version that would start dropping real launcher failures.
  2. The filter is unconditional, so a launcher Job whose Ignore rule an override has stripped loses its log with no fallback. Narrow, since nothing in the catalog does that today.

@asivanadi0 #539 (ADR-102) merged and conflicts with this PR beyond the textual conflict. The Pod cache now holds only pods labelled nvcre.nvidia.com/job, and the cache guard refuses every Pod informer. On main + this PR, the Job controller's Pod watch is refused, and the integration suite hangs until its 10-minute timeout. test/readpolicy also fails on the r.List in launcherPods.

Two ways forward. Either is fine with me:

A. Trim to the #498 fix. Keep the restart policy, backoffLimit, podFailurePolicy, the KAI change and failedContainerOf. Drop the Pod watch, launcherFailureLog, launcherPods and the Mokka failureLog assertion. Without the watch, launcherPods finds nothing, since JobSet deletes the launcher pods before captureFailureLog runs. For the conflict, take main's podread.JobPods and call failedContainerOf(pods). Main never captures the launcher log on this path either, so nothing regresses. Launcher visibility then moves to #546, which has the same problem on the timeout path.

B. Keep the early read, with a scoped watch:

  • Label the launcher pod with a new key, nvcre.nvidia.com/launcher: <job name>, through the existing launcher runtimePatch entry, the same one SetNodeAffinity and SetTolerations use. Add it only when HasLauncherTarget is true, since Trainer's webhook rejects a patch for a replicated job the runtime lacks. nvcre.nvidia.com/job stays worker-only, so node discovery, drain and attribution don't change.
  • In cmd/manager, build a second cache that holds only pods with that label, used only for the watch. Add it to the manager and watch it with WatchesRawSource(source.Kind(...)). The map func takes the Job name from the label, so the TrainJob Get goes away.
  • In launcherPods, read live through newPodReader(r.Client, r.APIReader).WorkloadPods(ctx, ns, ref.Name, workload.LauncherJobName) instead of r.List. Keep the DisruptionTarget and generation filters.
  • Add a short amendment to ADR-102 for the watch-only launcher scope.

With B, #546 becomes a small follow-up on the same lookup.

Brings in ADR-102 (NVIDIA#539), the Akamai overlays (NVIDIA#537) and the README
platform list (NVIDIA#550). captureFailureLog keeps main's podread.JobPods for
the workers and puts the launchers ahead of them.

…ache

Follows ADR-102 (NVIDIA#539) with the approach agreed on NVIDIA#529 (option B):

- The launcher pod gets nvcre.nvidia.com/launcher: <job name> through the
controller-owned launcher runtimePatch entry, only when the runtime has a
  launcher target (workload.InjectLauncherPodLabel). nvcre.nvidia.com/job
  stays on workers only.
- NewLauncherPodCache builds a second cache scoped to that label, added to
the manager's cache group. The launcher watch runs on it through
WatchesRawSource(source.Kind(...)), and the map function takes the Job
name from the label, so it no longer Gets the TrainJob.
- launcherPods reads live through podread.WorkloadPods, keeping the
  DisruptionTarget and generation filters.
- ADR-102 amendment, deployment memory note and AGENTS.md/CLAUDE.md rule.

  • pkg/workload/trainjob.go: InjectLauncherPodLabel sets nvcre.nvidia.com/launcher: <job name> on the launcher through the controller-owned launcher runtimePatch entry, only when HasLauncherTarget is true. nvcre.nvidia.com/job stays on workers only. Called from createWorkloadFromSpec; the label key is podread.LauncherLabel.
  • pkg/controller/cache.go: NewLauncherPodCache builds a second cache whose only scope is Pods with that label, and adds it to the manager's cache group. cmd/manager/main.go passes it to the Job controller (SetupWithManager builds it if unset).
  • pkg/controller/job_controller.go: the Pod watch is now WatchesRawSource(source.Kind(r.LauncherPodCache, ...)). launcherPodToJob takes the Job name from the label, so the TrainJob Get is gone. launcherPods reads live through newPodReader(r.Client, r.APIReader).WorkloadPods(ctx, ns, ref.Name, workload.LauncherJobName) and keeps the DisruptionTarget and generation filters.
  • docs/designs/102-scoped-pod-cache.md: short amendment covering the label, the watch-only cache and the live read. Matching lines in docs/operations/deployment.md and AGENTS.md/CLAUDE.md.

Tests:

  • TestInjectLauncherPodLabel (goldens): label on the launcher patch only when the runtime has a launcher target, node keeps only the job label. Fails if the HasLauncherTarget guard is removed.
  • TestLauncherPodToJob: maps from the launcher label; the job label alone or a bare pod maps to nothing. Fails if the map func reads the job label instead.
  • Failure log tests: launcher fixtures exist only in the live reader, so reading them through the cache fails 8 cases.
  • TestLauncherPodCacheScopesPodsToLauncherLabel: the cache selects Pods by the launcher label only.
  • Earlier tests and the Mokka failureLog assertion are unchanged.
  • make lint, make verify, unit tests and test/readpolicy pass. The integration suite passes in about 280s with no refused cache reads. The only golden change is the launcher label in certification-aws-gb200-nccl-pull-secrets.

#546 follows on the same lookup: captureTimeoutLog in workflow_controller.go will prepend the launchers from launcherPods (moved to a helper both reconcilers share), so a timed-out MPI run records the launcher's log. I'll send that as a small follow-up once this merges.

@asivanadi0 thanks, B looks right. I checked it against the code, and 8b80632 (781c2b5 merged with main) passes make verify, make lint and make test, with no refused cache reads.

Two things before I approve:

  1. Please rerun Mokka on 8b80632. The last Mokka pass was on ff2d0e4, with the old watch. envtest doesn't run Trainer, so only Mokka shows the label landing on a real launcher pod and the new cache's watch firing:
    make mokka-up PROFILE=h100
    make test-uat-mokka-run
Paste the TestNCCLAllReduceWorkloadFailed result. While it runs, also paste kubectl get pods -A -l nvcre.nvidia.com/launcher --show-labels, so we can see the label on the launcher.
  2. Fix the wording in AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md. The new launcher-watch sentence sits right before "The cache guard refuses those", so "those" now reads as the launcher cache. Move the new sentence after that one, and keep the two files identical.

In AGENTS.md and CLAUDE.md the launcher-watch sentence sat right before
"The cache guard refuses those", so "those" read as the launcher cache.
Move it after that sentence, so "those" refers to reads through
r.Client, mgr.GetCache() and Watches/Owns on Pods. The two files stay
identical.

@kaynetu thanks. Both are done.

1. Mokka on 8b80632. I ran make mokka-up PROFILE=h100 on 8b80632, which rebuilt the manager image from that tree and upgraded NVCRE on the Kind cluster, then make test-uat-mokka-run:

=== RUN   TestNCCLAllReducePass
--- PASS: TestNCCLAllReducePass (86.41s)
=== RUN   TestNCCLAllReduceWorkloadFailed
    nccl_test.go:47: created Certification mokka-testncclallreduceworkloadfailed/nccl-workload-failed from nccl-workload-failed.yaml
--- PASS: TestNCCLAllReduceWorkloadFailed (114.63s)
=== RUN   TestNCCLAllReduceThreshold
--- PASS: TestNCCLAllReduceThreshold (93.45s)
=== RUN   TestNCCLAllReduceNoData
--- PASS: TestNCCLAllReduceNoData (79.35s)
PASS
ok github.com/NVIDIA/cluster-readiness-engine/test/uat/mokka	374.008s

TestClusterInfo passed too, and the two ComputeDomain cases skipped, as they are gb200/gb300 only.

kubectl get pods -A -l nvcre.nvidia.com/launcher --show-labels while TestNCCLAllReduceWorkloadFailed ran, just after the launcher failed:

NAMESPACE NAME READY STATUS RESTARTS AGE LABELS

The launcher carries nvcre.nvidia.com/launcher=<job> and no nvcre.nvidia.com/job label, so it is in the launcher cache only. Every launcher in the run had the label, including the JobSet's second launcher attempt in the failed case. The manager logged Captured failure log for that pod (exitCode: 1) at 13:48:46Z, as it went to Error, and the Job went to Failed with reason WorkloadFailed at 13:49:06Z. The manager log has no refused cache reads.

2. Wording. 3e2bbf6 moves the launcher-watch sentence after "The cache guard refuses those, and test/readpolicy fails on a corev1.PodList outside pkg/podread." in both files, which stay identical. It is docs only, so the Mokka run above was on 8b80632, before that commit. On 3e2bbf6, make check-agents-sync, make verify, make lint and make test pass.

LGTM. Thanks for working through the ADR-102 changes.

  • The launcher fails fast as #498 asked: restartPolicy: Never, one retry outside KAI, none under KAI, and evictions and preemptions don't count as failures.
  • The launcher watch runs on its own label-scoped cache, and reads stay live, so ADR-102's guarantees hold. 8b80632 passes make verify, make lint and make test with no refused cache reads.
  • Your Mokka run shows the launcher carrying nvcre.nvidia.com/launcher and failureLog capturing its output before JobSet deletes it.

Looking forward to the #546 follow-up on the same lookup.

The launcher label is landing on the pod but the UAT goldens were not regenerated for it, which is what the red UAT run is. The diff in TestAWSGB200NCCL/aws/gb200/nccl-all-reduce/Pods_match_expected_spec is a one-line insertion at line 32: actual has nvcre.nvidia.com/launcher: aws-gb200-nccl-communicat-e1b00-job, expected goes straight to ownerReferences:, and everything after that is the same content shifted by one line. git grep -c 'nvcre.nvidia.com/launcher' -- test/uat/ returns 0 on this branch, and 781c2b55 touches no file under test/uat/.

So it is the goldens, not the label. make test-uat and copying the .actual files over the nine expected_pods.yaml should clear it, and the only change in them ought to be that one label line on the launcher pods.

Separately this now conflicts with main in docs/operations/deployment.md, since #525 and #539 both touched the memory-sizing paragraph.

The scoped second cache reads like the right answer to the ADR-102 collision. Keeping nvcre.nvidia.com/job on workers only and giving launchers their own key means the guard still refuses everything it refused before, and WatchesRawSource on a cache whose only scope is that label keeps the memory story intact.

…-fast

Conflict in docs/operations/deployment.md, the memory-sizing paragraph:
keep this branch's sentence about the launcher pods labelled
nvcre.nvidia.com/launcher, and take main's GitHub URL for the ADR-102
link (NVIDIA#526), which published pages now require.

The launcher pod now carries nvcre.nvidia.com/launcher: <job name>, so
the eight NCCL UAT goldens that capture a launcher pod gain that one
label line. Regenerated with make test-uat-run, copying each .actual
over its expected_pods.yaml. The cordoned-node golden has no launcher
pod and is unchanged.

@ndipebot thanks, you were right that it was the goldens.

I merged main into the branch (no force-push). The docs/operations/deployment.md conflict keeps this branch's sentence about the launcher pods labelled nvcre.nvidia.com/launcher, and takes main's GitHub URL for the ADR-102 link from #526.

The regenerated goldens are a separate commit. I ran make test-uat-run and copied each .actual over its expected_pods.yaml. Eight files changed, not nine: aws/h100/cordoned-node has no launcher pod, so it stays the same. Each of the eight gains exactly one line, nvcre.nvidia.com/launcher: <job name> on the launcher pod, the same line your diff showed for TestAWSGB200NCCL. With the new goldens all 13 UAT tests pass locally.

Also on the merged head: make lint, make verify and the unit tests pass. I reran the Mokka H100 UAT (make mokka-up PROFILE=h100, then make test-uat-mokka-run), and all 5 tests passed, including TestNCCLAllReduceWorkloadFailed. In one full integration run, job-bandwidth-threshold-fail, job-scheduling-blocked and taint-selectors-mpi-fallback failed on timing. Each passed 3 of 3 when run on its own, and main flaked once for me too, in workflow-delete-with-deps.

Both of my points are fixed.

The launcher label is in all eight NCCL goldens. 6ac73a84 is 8 files and 8 insertions, nothing else, and in each file nvcre.nvidia.com/launcher sits at line 32 under the replicatedjob-name: launcher pod, with a value byte-identical to the nvcre.nvidia.com/job on that same file's worker pods, which is what job_controller.go:446 passes. The node pods are untouched. test/uat/testdata/aws/h100/cordoned-node/expected_pods.yaml correctly stays without it: it has no launcher replicatedJob, so HasLauncherTarget is false and InjectLauncherPodLabel returns early. StripPodVolatile in test/uat/util/helpers.go strips no nvcre.nvidia.com/* key, so the goldens assert a label a real run produces rather than one the harness would have removed.

git merge-tree --write-tree origin/main pr/529 exits 0 with no conflict after ad7f6da2.

I could not run UAT here, so the golden fix has no test behind it that I can execute. go test ./pkg/workload/ ./pkg/platform/ ./pkg/podread/ ./pkg/catalog/ passes at the head.

One question rather than a blocker: nothing in pkg/controller/testdata/ pins the c.Status == corev1.ConditionTrue half of isDisruptionTarget (job_controller.go:1722), since both DisruptionTarget cases use status True. Is a False case worth adding, or is that more pinning than the branch deserves?

The certification-onprem-b300-multirail case came in with NVIDIA#510 and its golden
was written before the launcher fail-fast change on this branch. Regenerate it so
the launcher Job carries backoffLimit 1, the DisruptionTarget podFailurePolicy and
restartPolicy Never, matching the other launcher goldens.

The Test failure after the merge of main was in certification-onprem-b300-multirail, the new case from #510. Its golden was written before this branch's fail-fast launcher change, so it still expected restartPolicy: OnFailure with no backoffLimit or podFailurePolicy. e5bdd0a regenerates that one golden. Only the launcher Job fields differ (backoffLimit: 1, the Ignore on DisruptionTarget pod failure rule, and restartPolicy: Never), the same change the other launcher goldens on this PR already carry. The integration and unit tests pass locally.
