In-page "On this page" links in synced documents break whenever upstream renames its anchor ids, because the converter copies #id hrefs verbatim while dropping the ids, so the links never match the Markdown headings.

Refs #781

Changes

  • HTMLContentExtractor records each heading's id/name (on the heading tag or any element inside it, such as <a name="employee">) and maps it to the GitHub-style slug of the heading text, with -1, -2 suffixes for repeated headings. #id links to a recorded heading are rewritten to that slug; links to unrecorded ids are left unchanged.
  • The fix sits in the shared extractor, so html_selector pages and BC Laws (bclaws) pages both get it.
  • EXTRACTOR_VERSION goes from 1 to 2, so the next --sync does a full fetch and rewrites every web-sourced document. Until that sync runs, --check reports "Extraction inputs changed" for those sources, as designed.
  • The two version-bump tests now bump relative to the current value instead of hard-coding "2".

What changes for the app

After the next sync, table-of-contents links jump to the right section. For example, the criminal notification page's #employee becomes #employee-responsibility, and BC Laws #section1 becomes #definitions. This PR changes no data files. A local --sync produced the same anchors that main already has for the criminal notification page, so #781's hand-synced anchors would become broken links.

Verification

  • New tests: test_in_page_anchor_links_point_at_heading_slugs and test_bclaws_in_page_anchor_links_point_at_heading_slugs.
  • pytest tests/test_sync_sources.py tests/test_index.py tests/test_generate_knowledge_base.py ../tests/deploy_integrity/: 137 passed.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • In-page links now resolve to generated heading anchors, including when headings are duplicated. Links to unmatched targets remain unchanged.

🔥 The Roast: You collapse whitespace before stripping punctuation, so Section 2 — Scope keeps the ghost of that em-dash as a double space and limps out as section-2--scope-and-limits — with a stutter. Your own test on line 2401 enshrines the stutter as expected behavior, which is like framing your typo. GitHub's slugger collapses runs, so the real rendered anchor is single-hyphen and your rewritten link misses it — the exact class of bug this PR exists to kill.

🩹 The Fix: Normalize after stripping punctuation, e.g. collapse \s+ after the [^\w\- ] removal (or collapse -{2,}), so — surrounded by spaces yields one hyphen. And yes, you'll need to fix the test expectation too.

🔥 The Roast: Three blank lines between top-level defs. PEP 8 asked for two and you tipped the waiter an extra one for no reason. Ruff/flake8 E303 is judging you silently.

app/tests/test_sync_sources.py 2377 Three blank lines between defs; PEP 8 wanted two

🏆 Best part: Oh wait, the setdefault on anchor_slugs and the forward-link rewriting via get_markdown post-pass is actually clean — first-id-wins, unknown ids left alone, version bump forcing a full re-sync. I need to sit down.

💀 Worst part: The slug function generates section-2--scope-and-limits with a double hyphen because it collapses whitespace before stripping punctuation — you're shipping the exact species of broken anchor this PR was born to exterminate, and the test blesses it.

📊 Overall: Like a locksmith who fixed the front door but left the back window painted shut — the mechanism is right, the finishing pass needs one more turn.

📝 Walkthrough

The HTML extractor now maps heading IDs and names to generated Markdown heading slugs. It rewrites local fragment links when their IDs match that map and leaves unmatched fragments unchanged. The extractor version changes from 1 to 2.

Changes: Heading anchor normalization

Layer / File(s) Summary
Build heading anchor mappings
app/scripts/sync_sources.py
The extractor captures heading IDs and names, derives slugs from heading text, and adds numeric suffixes for duplicate slugs.
Rewrite local fragment links
app/scripts/sync_sources.py, app/tests/test_sync_sources.py
The extractor rewrites matching local fragments and leaves unmatched fragments unchanged. Tests cover nested anchors, formatted headings, duplicate slugs, missing targets, and BC Laws-cleaned output. Version-drift tests now derive their simulated version from the current extractor version.

In-page anchor rewriting works for the common cases. Two rare cases can still leave a link pointing at the wrong heading or keeping its original fragment: headings that collide with their own numeric suffixes, and percent-encoded fragments. These are small, localized fixes that can be made before or after merge.

Keep generated heading slugs unique.

For headings foo, foo-1, and foo, this code assigns the last two headings the same slug, foo-1. Links to their different IDs then point to the same target. Check assigned slugs when choosing a duplicate suffix; advance the suffix until it is unused.

Decode fragments before looking up heading IDs.

If a heading has id="part:1" and a link uses href="#part%3A1", the lookup misses the recorded ID. The output retains a fragment that does not point to the generated heading slug. Decode the fragment for lookup, and retain the original fragment when no ID matches.
