Summary

Implements issue #5: parse Google Takeout sidecar JSON (*.json and *.supplemental-metadata.json, including 51-char truncation and duplicate-marker variants) to preserve creation date and GPS in JPEG EXIF when tags are missing.

  • Sidecar discovery — legacy and post-2024 naming, bracket-swap duplicates, truncated supplemental suffixes
  • EXIF merge — fills missing DateTimeOriginal (prefers photoTakenTime, falls back to creationTime) and GPS (prefers non-zero geoDataExif / geoData); never overwrites existing tags
  • Sidecar lifecycle — moves sidecars with rejected images to --filter-dir; removes sidecars for kept images after a successful merge pass

Closes #5

Test plan

  • python3 image_cull.py --self-check (includes new _check_takeout_metadata)
  • ruff check image_cull.py
  • CI (./check.sh)

Notes

  • EXIF write is JPEG-only (piexif); HEIC/HEIF sidecars still move/clean on reject/keep but metadata is not embedded in-place
  • Metadata merge runs before culling when not in --dry-run
Open in Web Open in Cursor

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • Improved Google Takeout sidecar processing, including independent merging of available timestamp and GPS metadata.
    • Sidecars remain correctly paired with rejected images, including date-only and duplicate filename variations.
    • Collision-safe naming prevents rejected images and sidecars from overwriting existing files.
    • Datetime conversion now consistently uses local system time.
    • Duplicate filenames, malformed metadata, invalid altitude values, and EXIF loading failures are handled more reliably without interrupting processing.
    • Sidecars are removed only after successful metadata merging, with clearer reporting for unexpected failures.

Parse legacy and supplemental-metadata sidecar JSON files to fill
missing DateTimeOriginal and GPS on JPEGs before culling. Move or remove
sidecar files when images are rejected or kept, respectively.

Closes #5

Code Review Roast 🔥

Verdict: No Issues Found | Recommendation: Merge

Oh wait, the fix actually landed — and this time I trace-checked it instead of just trusting the commit message. _reject_collision_name now slots the collision suffix before the duplicate marker (image(11).jpg → image_2(11).jpg), so _paired_sidecar_name and find_takeout_sidecar can still rediscover the moved sidecar as image_2.jpg(11).json. The bracket-swap-after-collision hole is genuinely plugged, and the tightened self-check actually asserts the round-trip instead of eyeballing it.

📊 Overall: Like a locksmith who finally cut the key on the right groove — the door opens, nobody's locked out, and the batch stops sleeping on the sidewalk.

Oh wait, the fix actually landed. The while True treadmill that was going to spin until the heat death of the universe is now a bounded while n <= 10_000 loop, and _paired_sidecar_name finally learned to advance its own suffix instead of pointing at the same name forever. I need to sit down.

📊 Overall: Like a GPS that finally accepted the road it was already on — the destination is reachable, the exit is taken, and the batch won't hang.

File Line Roast
image_cull.py 666 The while True collision loop can spin forever when _paired_sidecar_name falls back to returning the sidecar's original name — sidecar_dest stops changing while the image name keeps collecting suffixes

🏆 Best part: Pairing the image and sidecar into a single collision-avoiding unique_reject_dest_pair is genuinely the right structure — both names are derived together, the bare-stem case finally gets a matching suffix, and the new self-check actually asserts the orphaned-collision_2.jpg.json collision instead of waving at it. Oh wait, this is actually well designed. I need to sit down.

💀 Worst part: The fallback inside that otherwise-clean function is a one-way name that never advances, so the collision loop it feeds is a treadmill: img_dest keeps running while sidecar_dest.exists() stays exactly where it was. Infinite loop in a batch file tool is a hang, not an error.

📊 Overall: Like a GPS that recalculates forever because it can't accept the road it's already on — the destination is reachable, but it'll never take the exit.

Previous review (commit 465e6fd)

Verdict: No Issues Found | Recommendation: Merge

The for_move guard got ceremoniously retired, and for once that is the right call: the actual sidecar-burglary path (the duplicate-marker-stripping regex) was already deleted back in 66850d6, so for_move was a bouncer guarding an empty room while stem-only sidecars like 20030616.json were left behind in the input dir with the rejects. Now a rejected 20030616.jpg drags its 20030616.json along to the filter dir, the read and move paths finally share one variant list, and the new self-check actually exercises the stem-only case.

Oh wait, this incremental commit is actually clean too. I need to sit down. Twice in one PR.

📊 Overall: Like a sequel that does not ruin the original — smaller, tighter, and it actually fixes the plot hole.

Previous review (commit 35c49e4)

Verdict: No Issues Found | Recommendation: Merge

The DST bug is actually dead this time. datetime.fromtimestamp(meta["timestamp"]) resolves the offset for that timestamp instead of sampling "right now" and freezing it onto history — July photos processed in January no longer show up wearing an hour of wrongness. And the self-check now computes its expected string with the same conversion, so it passes on a PST dev laptop instead of only on a UTC CI box.

Oh wait, this PR is actually clean. I need to sit down. I had my flamethrower warmed up and everything.

📊 Overall: Like a GPS that finally recalculates for every turn — same destination, but now it's actually on the right road the whole way.

image_cull.py 997 Local-time conversion samples the current DST offset and stamps it on every historical timestamp — off by an hour for half the year

Fix these issues in Kilo Cloud

🏆 Best part: The reachability fixes are genuinely solid — for_move=True stops the sidecar burglary, _PROTECTED_JSON_STEMS stops the tool from eating its own report, the parse/float guards turn crashes into skips, per-tag EXIF writes stop the overwrite, and gating sidecar deletion on takeout_merged finally retires the HEIC/PNG data shredder. Oh wait, this part is actually clean. I need to sit down.

💀 Worst part: After all that good work, the timestamp fix just relocated the bug onto the calendar — a fixed current offset wearing a "local time" name tag.

📊 Overall: Like a GPS that only recalculates when you start the car — right destination, wrong road half the year.

image_cull.py 901 Malformed sidecar JSON crashes the entire run — no try/except around parse/merge
image_cull.py 1225 Kept HEIC/PNG/WebP files get their sidecars deleted with metadata never merged — permanent data loss
image_cull.py 666 Variant-guessing can move another image's sidecar; in --apply mode the keeper loses its metadata
image_cull.py 937 DMS seconds can round to 60.0000 → invalid GPS tag, position off by a minute
image_cull.py 979 UTC written into EXIF DateTime, which every viewer treats as local time

Fix these issues in Kilo Cloud

🏆 Best part: The sidecar lifecycle is genuinely thoughtful — rejected images drag their sidecars along to the filter dir, keepers get cleaned only after a successful merge, and the self-check actually exercises the truncation, dupe-marker, and move/remove paths. Oh wait, this part is well thought out. I need to sit down.

💀 Worst part: The unguarded JSON parse. Every other per-image path in this file catches its exceptions and logs-and-continues; this one lets a single corrupt sidecar abort 10,000 photos of culling before the first image is even scored.

📊 Overall: Like a Google Maps detour — the destination is right, but you'll lose some data if you take the wrong exit.

  • In the normal analysis path this cleanup call is outside the surrounding per-image exception handler. If unlink() fails because the input directory is read-only or the sidecar disappears during processing, the exception escapes process_image and executor.map aborts the whole batch after the image has already been classified. Make sidecar cleanup best-effort by catching and logging OSError, as is done for rejected-image moves.

  • This fallback lets find_takeout_sidecar('photo(3).jpg') select photo.jpg.json when the duplicate-specific sidecar is absent. That is the unmarked image's sidecar, so processing the duplicate can merge, delete, or move metadata belonging to photo.jpg; do not fall back to the unmarked variant for duplicate-marked media.

find_takeout_sidecar considers the extensionless-stem sidecar during metadata merging, but move_reject disables that candidate with for_move=True. Thus a sidecar found for an image during normal processing can be left in the source directory when that image is filtered. Use the same candidate set for the move lookup so every supported sidecar follows its rejected image.

674-674: 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win

Allocate the image and sidecar destination as one pair.

If collision.jpg and collision_2.jpg.json already exist, this code moves the image to collision_2.jpg but renames its sidecar to collision_2.jpg_2.json. find_takeout_sidecar(collision_2.jpg) does not consider that name. The rejected image and sidecar then lose their association.

Select the next image destination only when both that image path and its derived sidecar path are available.
