fix(replay): restore handler step variables on re-run; reject steps inserted before the target - #6016
Follow-up to #6011 for two review threads on src/praisonai/praisonai/replay/rerun.py.
1. Earlier step variables were lost on re-run (rerun.py:240). seed_flow already restores step_end.data.variables, but core never wrote that field, so a real recording had nothing to restore. A later step that read a variable set by a reused earlier step saw the fresh run's value, not the recorded one.
Core: ContextTraceEmitter.step_end(..., variables=None) records the variables the step set, redacted with the existing _redact_dict. AgentFlow collects StepResult.variables per step and passes them on (including on the step-cache path). The key is omitted when a step sets none.
2. A step inserted before the target was silently skipped (rerun.py:297).
For example, the recording ran research → draft and the current flow is research → extra → draft. Re-running from draft reused research and never ran extra, so draft got the wrong input.
Wrapper: plan_rerun stores which steps started before the target, including skipped ones. _check_flow_order raises RerunError before anything runs if the flow has an earlier step the recording never started.
Tests
Core: TestStepVariables. A handler's variables are recorded, the secret is redacted, and no key is written when none are set.
Wrapper:
an inserted step is rejected and nothing runs;
a step that was recorded but skipped is still accepted;
end to end: record() a real flow, re-run from step 2, and confirm the variable is restored and step 1 is not re-executed.
Weight: +17 lines of core runtime code, no new dependencies, and when recording is off the span is None, so nothing is redacted or emitted; the only cost is one small dict update per handler step.
Workflow run history now records variables changed by each step, with sensitive values redacted.
Replays can restore recorded step variables, including updates from cached steps, instead of relying on fresh execution.
Bug Fixes
Reruns now reject flows with unrecorded steps before the rerun point, including nested targets.
Reruns are blocked when required recorded variables contain redacted values. Previously recorded skipped steps remain skipped during reruns.
Origin: outsider. This PR follows up issue #6011, which was flagged as coming from an outsider. So the change is kept to a minimal fix in source and tests only. It does not touch .github/, dependency manifests, lockfiles, build or install files, or conftest.py. It adds no network endpoints, telemetry, credential handling, eval/exec/subprocess, or dynamic imports.
Core workflows.py: steps run through _execute_single_step_internal (patterns and hierarchical mode) now record their handler variables on step_end, the same way the sequential path does.
Wrapper rerun.py: plan_rerun raises RerunError when a variable it would restore was redacted in the recording, so the [REDACTED] marker can no longer replace the real value.
Wrapper rerun.py: the check for steps inserted before the target now matches top-level steps by graph node id, so unnamed patterns such as If are caught as well.
…nserted before the target
- core: step_end records the variables a step set (redacted), so a re-run can
restore them; before this, step_end carried none and the wrapper's restore
path had nothing to read from a real recording.
- wrapper: plan_rerun records which steps started before the target; seed_flow
refuses a flow that has an earlier step the recording never ran, instead of
silently feeding the target the wrong prefix.
Addresses review threads on #6011 (rerun.py:240, rerun.py:297).

Walkthrough
Workflow replay now records handler variable updates in redacted step-end events. Rerun planning restores recorded variables and checks that earlier steps were recorded, including for nested targets.

Record step variables src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/trace/context_events.py, src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/workflows/workflows.py, src/praisonai-agents/tests/unit/trace/test_run_events.py
Step completion paths pass handler, cached, and changed nested-step variables to step-end events. The emitter redacts copied variables. Tests cover redaction, omitted empty variables, nested steps, cache hits, in-place changes, and uncopyable values.
Validate and restore reruns src/praisonai/praisonai/replay/rerun.py, src/praisonai/tests/unit/replay/test_replay_rerun.py
Rerun plans track nodes started before the target. Flow validation rejects unrecorded earlier steps, including for nested targets, and planning rejects recorded redacted variables. Tests cover restoring recorded values and preserving recorded skips.

Files modified
src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/workflows/workflows.py: _execute_single_step_internal now passes the variables a step set (excluding its output variable) to _replay_step_end. Before this, hierarchical and pattern-nested steps recorded none. (Greptile P1)
src/praisonai/praisonai/replay/rerun.py:
plan_rerun raises RerunError if a variable it would restore contains [REDACTED]. Previously the marker was merged into all_variables as if it were the real value. (CodeRabbit and Greptile, context_events.py:1316)
_check_flow_order identifies top-level steps by their graph node id (_flow_graph(flow).ids), not by name. An unnamed If or other pattern inserted before the target is now rejected. (CodeRabbit and Greptile, rerun.py:307)
Tests:
test_run_events.py::test_nested_step_end_records_handler_variables fails without the core fix and passes with it.
A step that was skipped in the recording can run fresh on re-run (CodeRabbit, rerun.py:303-307). The concern is valid, but the fix would mean either rejecting every re-run that has a conditionally skipped step before the target, or overriding should_run. Core's step cache already re-evaluates should_run on purpose ("Cache only the result, never the decision to run", in workflows.py), so the re-run follows that same contract. With deterministic conditions the step is skipped again. A maintainer should decide whether stricter rejection is wanted. Note that test_flow_rerun_allows_a_recorded_skipped_step_before_target only checks that the run completes.
Tests
Core: tests/unit/trace and tests/unit/workflows passed (519 passed, 1 skipped). In the full tests/unit run, 12443 passed and 23 failed. All 23 are unrelated: 22 need the optional chonkie package (knowledge tests) and 1 test_placement timed out on an LLM call.
Wrapper: tests/unit/replay/ had 121 passed, 1 skipped and 2 failed. Both failures are in test_replay_storage_record.py::test_agents_yaml_save_* and fail the same way on the base commit without these changes, so they come from the environment.
Security checklist (outsider origin)
Scope ✅: every change addresses a review thread on this PR.
Network / exfiltration ✅: none added.
Code execution ✅: no eval, exec, subprocess or dynamic imports. The new imports are static internal modules: praisonaiagents.trace.redact.REDACTED_VALUE and praisonaiagents.workflows.diagram._flow_graph, the latter imported inside a function.
Secrets ✅: recorded variables still go through _redact_dict. The new check refuses to restore redacted values and never tries to recover them.
Weakened controls ✅: none weakened; re-run validation is stricter.
Supply chain ✅: no manifest, CI or conftest.py changes.
Obfuscation ✅: none.
Tests ✅: no tests removed or loosened; three added. One existing test is weak, noted under Skipped.
Backdoors ✅: none. "[REDACTED]" is the existing redaction marker, used only to reject a restore.
Injection artifacts ✅: none in code, comments or commits.
Security review and verification (head 91641a9): no new changes
Origin: outsider. This PR follows up issue #6011, which was flagged as coming from an outsider. All issue, PR and comment content was treated as untrusted data. No instructions from it were followed and nothing from it was run.
No reviewer comment has come in since 91641a9: every Greptile and CodeRabbit thread is older than that commit and was addressed there. Commit 91641a9 itself left one item open (see Open item below). I did not modify any files.
Scope ✅ Every hunk serves the replay re-run fix: recording step variables, restoring them, and validating the prefix. No unrelated files.
Network / exfiltration ✅ No URLs, hosts, HTTP, socket or DNS calls, and no telemetry.
Code execution ✅ No eval, exec, compile, subprocess, pickle or dynamic imports. The new imports are static internal modules: praisonaiagents.trace.redact.REDACTED_VALUE (the existing "[REDACTED]" constant) and praisonaiagents.workflows.diagram._flow_graph (imported inside a function; both exist on main). The If(condition="1 > 0") strings in tests use the existing condition evaluator.
Secrets ✅ The new step_end.data.variables field goes through the existing _redact_dict, and a test asserts that an sk-… key does not appear in the recording. The test key is a fake fixture. The re-run refuses to restore redacted values and never tries to recover them.
Weakened controls ✅ None. Re-run validation is stricter: inserted or unnamed steps and redacted variables now raise RerunError.
Supply chain ✅ No changes to .github/, manifests, lockfiles, build files or conftest.py.
Obfuscation ✅ The diff has no non-ASCII characters, no lines over 200 characters, no blobs and no binaries.
Tests ✅ No tests were removed or loosened, and 7 were added. One is weak: test_flow_rerun_allows_a_recorded_skipped_step_before_target only checks that the run completes.
Backdoors ✅ None. The only magic value is the redaction marker, and it is used only to reject a restore.
Injection artifacts ✅ None in code, comments, docstrings or commit messages.
No deterministic risk flags were provided.
Correctness note
In _execute_single_step_internal, the before = dict(all_variables) copy only runs after the span is None early return. That means it only happens while a replay recording is active, so there is no cost on the normal path.
Tests (fresh venv)
Core: tests/unit/trace and tests/unit/workflows had 519 passed, 1 skipped.
Wrapper: tests/unit/replay had 121 passed, 1 skipped, 2 failed. The 2 failures are test_replay_storage_record.py::test_agents_yaml_save_*, and they fail the same way on main, so this PR did not cause them.
Open item for a maintainer (unchanged)
CodeRabbit raised this: a step that was skipped in the recording runs its condition again on re-run. That matches core's step-cache contract ("cache only the result, never the decision to run"). Rejecting these re-runs instead is a product decision for a maintainer.
Verdict: PASS on all 10 checklist items. No security concerns found.

Keep generated output out of cached step variables.
On a cache hit, _cached["variables"] includes the generated output variable, even when the handler set no variables. Passing the mapping here adds data.variables to that step’s event. It also passes the full cached output to ContextTraceEmitter.step_end instead of only its output preview. Keep the generated variable for workflow execution, but trace only handler-provided updates. The PR objective says the variables key is omitted when a step sets no variables.

src/praisonai/praisonai/replay/rerun.py:230-235 🗄️ Data Integrity & Integration | 🟠 Major | ⚡ Quick win
Mark nested leaf steps as running before the replay-cache lookup.
Nested Parallel and Loop callers invoke _execute_single_step_internal() without the top-level running-status assignment. TraceStepCache._current_step() therefore returns None, so recorded predecessors run again instead of restoring their output and variables.
This cache-eligibility gap predates this PR. The PR adds nested-leaf variable recording but does not fix cache reuse, so variable restoration also remains ineffective for these predecessors.

step_end now writes a handler's StepResult.variables into trace events, passed through the existing _redact_dict. That redaction is key/pattern based, so a secret stored under an innocuous key name could still end up in a local trace file. Recording is opt-in, nothing leaves the process, and the same redaction already covers other recorded fields. No new exposure path.

src/praisonai/praisonai/replay/rerun.py:313-322
weakened controls
None (hardening)
_check_flow_order now also raises RerunError when a top-level step comes before the target but never started in the recording. The check only adds a rejection path and loosens nothing.
Checklist:
Scope: every change serves the two stated fixes (record and restore step variables; reject steps inserted before the re-run target), plus the review-thread follow-up for the nested/pattern path and redacted values. No unrelated files or refactors.
Exfiltration/network: no new URLs, hosts, HTTP/socket/DNS calls, webhooks or telemetry. Data only goes to the existing in-process trace emitter.
Code execution: no eval/exec/compile, subprocess, shell, pickle/marshal/yaml or ctypes. The new imports (praisonaiagents.trace.redact.REDACTED_VALUE, praisonaiagents.workflows.diagram._flow_graph) are static imports of in-repo modules. The If(condition="1 > 0") in the tests uses the existing condition feature and adds no new evaluation surface.
Secrets: no env var, credential file or keychain reads. The test secret sk-abcdefghijklmnop1234 is a dummy value, and the test asserts it gets redacted.
Weakened controls: none. Both control changes add rejections.
Supply chain: no manifests, lockfiles, CI/workflows, build hooks, entry points, conftest.py or .pth files touched.
Obfuscation: no encoded blobs, minified or long single lines, or bidi/zero-width/homoglyph characters seen. No binary files.
Tests: tests are only added, none removed or loosened. The new tests check real behaviour: ran == [] / calls == [] for no execution, seen == [42] for variable restore, and pytest.raises with specific messages.
Persistence/backdoors: no hard-coded credentials, magic values, hidden endpoints, or behaviour keyed on users, dates or hosts.
Injection artifacts: none in the code, comments, docstrings or test data. The PR body contains bot-generated release notes (CodeRabbit HTML comment markers) and a provenance note, but no instructions aimed at reviewers or AI tools.
Scope matches the request: yes
Risk flags: none were supplied by the deterministic scan, so there are none to explain.
…alue does not disable change detection
Before, one variable that could not be deep-copied (a lock or a client, for
example) switched the whole snapshot to identity comparison, so a list another
variable's step changed in place was no longer recorded on step_end. Use the
existing _isolate_scope, which shares only the uncopyable values.

Origin: outsider. This PR follows up issue #6011, which was flagged as coming from an outsider, so I kept this to a minimal fix in source and tests. It does not touch .github/, dependency manifests, lockfiles, build or install files, or conftest.py. It adds no network endpoints, telemetry, credential handling, eval/exec/subprocess, or dynamic imports.
src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/workflows/workflows.py: CodeRabbit finding at line 3142, which still applied. In _execute_single_step_internal, the snapshot taken before a nested step now uses the existing _isolate_scope, which copies each value separately, instead of one copy.deepcopy(all_variables) that falls back to identity. Before this, a single variable that could not be deep-copied (a lock or a client, for example) made every variable compare by identity. A list changed in place was then dropped from step_end. Now only the value that cannot be copied is shared. Net −2 lines, no new helper.
src/praisonai-agents/tests/unit/trace/test_run_events.py: added test_uncopyable_variable_does_not_hide_an_in_place_change. It fails without the fix (None != {'items': ['a', 'b']}) and passes with it.
Skipped
CodeRabbit's comment outside the diff on rerun.py:230-235 (changing how ReplayManager._current_step picks the active nested leaf during cache lookup). That is a change to cache-lookup behaviour outside what this PR set out to fix. On an outsider-origin PR it belongs in a separate follow-up.
Tests
tests/unit/trace/: 151 passed. The only failures are TestLiteLLMPath, because litellm is not installed on this runner.
tests/unit/workflows/: 355 passed. The 9 failures are the same 9 you get on 06c97d3 without this change (litellm is missing, which also breaks the hierarchical manager tests).
praisonai tests/unit/replay/test_replay_rerun.py: 23 passed. The 4 failures are CLI tests that need typer, which is not installed. Other replay failures need dotenv or litellm.
Security checklist (full diff against main)
Scope: all 5 files are replay and step-variable source and tests. Nothing unrelated. ✅
Network and exfiltration: no new URLs, HTTP, sockets or telemetry. ✅
Code execution: no eval/exec/compile, subprocess, pickle or unsafe yaml. The only new import is a static one, praisonaiagents.workflows.diagram._flow_graph inside seed_flow, which is in-repo. ✅
Secrets: no reads of env vars or credentials. The recorded step_end.variables go through the existing _redact_dict. plan_rerun refuses to restore redacted values, so the [REDACTED] marker cannot leak into a re-run. ✅
Weakened controls: none. The changes add new RerunError rejections; nothing is relaxed. ✅
Supply chain: no manifests, CI, conftest.py or entry points. ✅
Obfuscation: no bidi or zero-width characters (scanned), no blobs, no binaries. ✅
Tests: tests are only added. The weak skip test was replaced with one that checks behaviour, and the new test is shown to fail without the fix. ✅
Backdoors: no magic values, and no behaviour keyed on a user, date or host. ✅
Injection artifacts: none in code, comments or tests. The CodeRabbit "prompt to fix" block was treated as data only. ✅

Do not record an ambiguous comparison as a variable write.
If an untouched variable has an ambiguous != result, _differs returns True. Line 3159 then puts that variable in step_end as an update from the nested step. For example, an array-valued initial variable can be recorded even when the handler changes only another key. A rerun can then restore the old initial value as though this step set it. Track actual writes or distinguish unsupported comparisons from confirmed changes.

Add the required real-agentic replay test.
The changed tests use direct AgentFlow handlers and do not call Agent.start() or an LLM. Add a gated integration test for recording and restoring handler variables in the existing real-agentic test suite. Keep the current deterministic unit test unchanged.

@claude You are the FINAL architecture reviewer. If the branch is under MervinPraison/PraisonAI (not a fork), you are able to make modifications to this branch and push directly. SCOPE: Review changes in this PR. Python SDK: praisonaiagents, praisonai. TypeScript SDK: src/praisonai-ts/. Do NOT modify src/praisonai-rust. Read ALL comments above from Gemini, Qodo, CodeRabbit, and Copilot carefully before responding.
MANDATORY READ (before reviewing):
Always read src/praisonai-agents/AGENTS.md
If this PR touches src/praisonai-ts/, also read src/praisonai-ts/AGENTS.md §2.1.2 (TS triage + PR review checklist)
Phase 1: Review per AGENTS.md
Protocol-driven: check heavy implementations vs core SDK
Backward compatible: ensure zero feature regressions
Performance: no hot-path regressions
SDK value: review in depth whether the change genuinely adds value to the SDK — never add features for the sake of adding them. It must strengthen the SDK (simpler, more user-friendly, robust, world-class, secure). If it does not clearly add value, request changes or recommend rejecting/closing rather than merging scope creep
Do not bloat the Agent class with additional params — only if absolutely required; we already support many params.
Repo routing: agent-callable tools → PraisonAI-Tools; lifecycle plugins → PraisonAI-Plugins; optional sandbox backends → PraisonAI-Plugins (praisonai.sandbox entry point) — request changes if wrongly added to praisonaiagents/
6b. External tool examples (examples/tools/external/**): If the diff is confined to that path, mark SDK value ❌ for monorepo merge — redirect the contributor to PraisonAI-Tools; do not Approve for merge unless the PR has the maintainer-accept-example label.
6c. New vendor *_tools.py in core (src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/tools/): If the PR adds a new *_tools.py for a third-party API/SaaS/dataset (e.g. FXMacroData), mark Repo routing ❌ and SDK value ❌ — redirect to MervinPraison/PraisonAI-Tools. Do not Approve because legacy bundled tools (Tavily/Exa/You.com/etc.) already in core are not precedent for new vendor modules. Request changes or recommend closing unless the PR has maintainer-accept-core-tools.

Origin: outsider. This PR follows up issue #6011, which was flagged as coming from an outsider, so I kept this to a minimal fix in source and tests. It does not touch .github/, dependency manifests, lockfiles, build or install files, or conftest.py. It adds no network endpoints, telemetry, credential handling, eval/exec/subprocess, or dynamic imports.
src/praisonai-agents/praisonaiagents/workflows/workflows.py: fixes CodeRabbit's Major finding at line 3140 (hot path). Before this, the per-value deep copy of the variable scope was taken for every recorded nested step, before should_run and the cache lookup. A loop over a large list therefore copied that list on every iteration, even when the step was skipped or served from cache.
A new 6-line helper, _snapshot_scope, takes the copy inside _execute_leaf_step. It runs only right before the step really executes: when there is no cache, or on a cache miss.
On a cache hit, all_variables is not modified, so the live scope is the baseline for the comparison and no copy is needed.
A skipped step returns variables: {}, so it needs no baseline.
When recording is off, nothing changes (the span is None).
On the first run, only the step that runs takes a snapshot (1 copy, not 2). On a cache-hit run there are 0 copies, and the cached step_end still records {"customer_id": 42}.
It fails without the fix (assert 2 == 1) and passes with it.
Skipped (with reasons)
Outside the diff, workflows.py:767, "ambiguous comparison recorded as a write":
When != raises (for example on a numpy array), the variable is recorded with the value it had at that point in the recording.
Restoring that value on re-run reproduces the recorded state. That is the purpose of replay.
The alternative, dropping the variable, would silently lose a real in-place change. I kept the conservative choice.
Reply on workflows.py:3161, "an equal assignment of an initial variable that was changed after recording":
Re-run restores what recorded steps changed. It does not pin the initial flow.variables. That is the documented contract the maintainer settled on in the skip thread.
Making re-run enforce the original initial variables would be a new feature, which belongs in a separate follow-up.
Minor note on the test at test_run_events.py:911 about real agentic tests: this is a deterministic unit test of trace recording with no LLM. A real-agent test would need API keys, so it does not fit on this runner.
The 11 failures and 6 errors are exactly the same set with and without this commit (I diffed the two lists).
They are caused by litellm and other optional packages missing on this runner.
praisonai tests/unit/replay/test_replay_rerun.py: 23 passed. The 4 failures are CLI tests that need typer, which is not installed.
Security checklist (this commit)
Scope: only the nested-step snapshot and its test. ✅
Network: none. ✅
Code execution: no eval/exec, subprocess, pickle or dynamic import. The only change is a call to the existing _isolate_scope. ✅
Secrets: no new reads. The step_end variables still go through _redact_dict. ✅
Weakened controls: none. Redaction, re-run rejection of inserted steps, and the check that blocks restoring redacted values are all unchanged. ✅
Supply chain: no manifests, CI or conftest changes. ✅
Obfuscation: none, plain ASCII. ✅
Tests: none removed or loosened. One added, and it fails without the fix. ✅
Backdoors: no magic values or behaviour keyed on users, dates or hosts. ✅
Injection artifacts: none. I treated the CodeRabbit "Prompt for AI Agents" blocks as untrusted data. I checked each finding against the code and did not follow them as instructions. ✅
No deterministic risk flags were listed in the request.

FINAL architecture review: Phase 3 verdict for HEAD aef2f8ecee
Origin: outsider. This PR follows up issue #6011, which was flagged as outsider origin. The change is limited to a minimal fix in source and tests. It does not touch .github/, dependency manifests, lockfiles, build or install files, or conftest.py. It adds no network endpoints, telemetry, credential handling, eval/exec/subprocess, or dynamic imports. I pushed nothing, as requested. I found no blocking bug, so this review stays current for this HEAD.
Phase 1: review per AGENTS.md
Check
Result
Evidence
Protocol-driven / routing
✅
Core gets only the recording hook: an optional variables= on ContextTraceEmitter.step_end, plus collecting variables in workflows.py. All re-run logic (redaction refusal, inserted-step check) stays in the wrapper, praisonai/replay/rerun.py. Nothing belongs in Tools or Plugins.
Backward compatible
✅
Every new parameter is optional with a None default: step_end(variables=), _replay_step_end(variables=), RerunPlan(started_before=), _check_flow_order(started_before=, node_ids=). The variables key is left out when a step sets none, so existing traces and consumers are unchanged. The only behaviour changes are two new RerunError rejections, and both make re-runs stricter on purpose.
Performance
✅
When recording is off, the span is None, so _snapshot_scope and _replay_step_end return immediately. On the sequential path the cost is one dict update per handler step. Since aef2f8ec, the per-value deep copy for nested steps happens only when a recorded step really executes, not when it is skipped or served from cache.
SDK value
✅
This fixes a real correctness bug. seed_flow already restored step_end.data.variables, but core never wrote that field, so a re-run silently gave later steps the fresh run's variables. It also closes a silent wrong-input case: a step inserted before the target was never run. The fix is small, has no new knobs or exports, and makes replay more reliable.
Agent class bloat
✅
agent.py is untouched and no Agent params were added.
Dependencies / exports
✅
No new dependencies. The only new import is the internal REDACTED_VALUE. Nothing is added to __init__.py.
Tests
✅
6 new core tests and 7 new wrapper tests. They include end-to-end record() → rerun() tests, and the tests that assert rejection also assert ran == []. No test was removed or loosened. The weak "file exists" test was replaced with a behavioural one in 06c97d3d.
Security checklist (outsider origin)
Scope: PASS. All 5 files serve the two stated fixes and the follow-ups from the review threads.
Network / exfiltration: PASS. No URLs, HTTP, socket or DNS calls. Variables go only to the existing local trace sink, and only when recording is on.
Code execution: PASS. No eval, exec, compile, subprocess, pickle or dynamic import. If(condition="1 > 0") in the tests uses the existing condition evaluator and is not new.
Secrets: Low, accepted. Handler variables now reach trace files through the existing _redact_dict, which uses key and pattern rules. That is the same limit that already applies to recorded outputs. The cache-hit path no longer leaks the output variable (workflows.py:2056-2064), which resolves the earlier Major privacy finding.
Weakened controls: PASS. Two new rejections were added and nothing was loosened.
Supply chain: PASS. No manifests, CI, entry points or conftest.py changed.
Obfuscation: PASS. I scanned the diff for bidi and zero-width characters and found none. No blobs or minified lines.
Tests: PASS (see above).
Backdoors: PASS. No magic values and no behaviour keyed on a user, host or date.
Injection artifacts: PASS. Nothing addressed to an AI in code, comments or test data.
Deterministic risk flags: none were listed for this diff. My own grep for eval(, exec(, subprocess, os.system, pickle, importlib, __import__, requests, urllib, socket, environ and http(s):// also found nothing in the added lines.
Non-blocking notes (no change requested)
rerun.py:178: REDACTED_VALUE in repr(v) would also reject a value that happens to contain the literal text [REDACTED]. This fails safe: the user gets a clear RerunError and nothing is restored wrongly.
workflows.py:3161: on a nested cache hit, the live scope is the baseline, so a handler variable whose value equals the live value is left out of step_end. Restoring an identical value would change nothing, so this is acceptable.
Verification
Reviewed the full diff main...aef2f8ec (+401/−7, 5 files).
I did not run the tests locally. This runner has no pytest, and I did not install packages for an outsider-origin PR. I am relying on the green CI on this HEAD.
step_end now writes handler StepResult.variables to the trace as self._redact_dict(dict(variables)). More workflow data now goes into trace files. It uses the existing redactor, which matches key and value patterns, so a secret stored under an innocuous key and in an unrecognised format could still be written. This only happens when recording is on (record(); the span is None otherwise), and the data goes to a local trace file, not over the network.
src/praisonai/praisonai/replay/rerun.py:178
weakened controls (reviewed)
Info
This is a new check that makes things stricter. It raises RerunError when a recorded variable contains REDACTED_VALUE, so the redaction marker is never restored as a real value.
src/praisonai/praisonai/replay/rerun.py:315-328
weakened controls (reviewed)
Info
This is also a new, stricter check. It rejects a re-run when the flow has a top-level step before the target that the recording never started. Nothing is loosened.
Checklist:
Exfiltration / network: No new URLs, hosts, HTTP, socket or DNS calls, webhooks or telemetry.
Code execution: No eval, exec, compile, subprocess, os.system, pickle, marshal, yaml or ctypes. The new imports are fixed in-repo modules: praisonaiagents.trace.redact.REDACTED_VALUE and praisonaiagents.workflows.diagram._flow_graph, which is imported lazily inside seed_flow. The If(condition="1 > 0") strings in the tests use the existing workflow condition feature; the PR adds no new evaluation path.
Secrets: No reads of env vars, credential files or ~/.ssh. The "sk-abcdefghijklmnop1234" string in a test is a dummy value, and the test asserts that it gets redacted.
Supply chain: No changes to manifests, lockfiles, CI, workflows, conftest.py, entry points or .pth files.
Obfuscation: No encoded blobs, minified code, bidi or zero-width characters, or binary files.
Tests: Tests are only added; none are removed, skipped or loosened. The new tests check real behaviour: that variables are recorded and redacted, that inserted steps are rejected with ran == [], that redacted variables are refused, and that variables survive a re-run end to end.
Backdoors: No hard-coded credentials, magic bypass values, or behaviour tied to specific users, dates or hosts.
Injection artifacts: None in the code, comments or tests. The PR body has a self-description paragraph ("Origin: outsider… It adds no network endpoints…"). It is a claim about the change, not an instruction to a reviewer, and I verified each claim against the diff myself rather than trusting it.
Scope matches the request: yes. The PR records step variables on step_end (core trace and workflows), restores and validates them on re-run (wrapper rerun.py), rejects steps inserted before the target, and adds tests for these. All changes serve the two stated review threads and their follow-up.
Risk flags: none were extracted, so there are none to explain.

Checks that passed:
SECURITY_REVIEW: PASS for this HEAD, and my own reading of the diff found no security concern: no network calls, no eval/exec/subprocess, no manifests or CI changed, and new variable tracing goes through the existing _redact_dict.
The FINAL architecture review is present. Its Phase 1 table includes an explicit SDK value row, and its verdict is APPROVE.
The author is MervinPraison (OWNER). The PR is +401/-7 across 5 files. agent.py is not touched and no Agent params are added.

workflows.py: steps run through_execute_single_step_internal(patterns and hierarchical mode) now record their handler variables onstep_end, the same way the sequential path does.rerun.py:plan_rerunraisesRerunErrorwhen a variable it would restore was redacted in the recording, so the[REDACTED]marker can no longer replace the real value.rerun.py: the check for steps inserted before the target now matches top-level steps by graph node id, so unnamed patterns such asIfare caught as well.
